New Walk Museum

The New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is a museum on New Walk in Leicester, England, not far from the city centre. The original building was designed by Joseph Hansom, designer of the hansom cab. Two dinosaur skeletons are permanently installed in the museum — a cetiosaur found in Rutland, and a plesiosaur from Barrow upon Soar. Other permanent exhibits include an Egyptian area, minerals of Leicestershire, the first Charnia fossil identified nearby, and a wildspace area featuring stuffed animals from around the world. The museum opened in 1849 as one of the first public museums established within the United Kingdom In September 2011, the New Walk Museum expanded its Dinosaur Gallery, reorganizing fossils, adding a new room, and modifying the gallery itself. The opening of the new Dinosaur Gallery was launched by David Attenborough. The "star attractions" of the new gallery include the aforementioned Rutland cetiosaur, Charnia and plesiosaur fossils, as well as a Leedsichthys fossil and a piece of the Barwell Meteorite. The new gallery predominantly features on extinct marine reptiles.

Leicester Market

Leicester Market is a market in The City of Leicester, England, on Market Place just south of the clock tower. It is open Monday to Saturday and has over 270 stalls. It is around 800 years old but was moved to the current site around 700 years ago. It is the largest outdoor covered market in Europe. The outdoor market sells a wide variety of goods, particularly fruit and vegetables, but also flowers, clothes, second-hand-books, bric-a-brac and jewellery. It also has a number of permanent units, containing clothes, cosmetics, fabrics, greetings cards, a cafe and pet products. The indoor market is a multi-level building containing the fish market and delicatessen, as well as stalls selling clothes, haberdashery, footwear, jewellery, gemstones, and confectionery. In the centre of the market stands the Leicester Corn Exchange, originally built as a trading centre, but now serving as a bar/restaurant. A statue of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland stands close to the Corn Exchange. There is also a monthly Farmers Market held on the last Wednesday of every month, specializing in locally produced organic meat, fruit and vegetables. In 2011 a new area called "Market Corner" was opened with various food and drink on offer on Fridays and Saturdays.

Rothley Temple

Rothley Temple, or more correctly Rothley Preceptory, was a preceptory located in the village of Rothley, Leicestershire, associated with both the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller. The preceptory's chapel, constructed by the Knights Templar, is currently part of the Rothley Court Hotel.

Leicester Guildhall

The Guildhall in Leicester, England, is a Grade I listed timber framed building, with the earliest part dating from c. 1390. The Guildhall once acted as the town hall for the city until the current one was commissioned in 1876. Although some parts are earlier, the majority of the building dates from the 15th century. It is located in the old walled city, on a street now known as Guildhall Lane. It was used first as the meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi and then later for the more formal Corporation of Leicester. The hall was used for many purposes, including council meetings, feasts, as a courtroom, and for theatrical performances; the ultimatum given to the city during English Civil War was discussed here.

Jewry Wall Museum

The Jewry Wall Museum is a museum in Leicester. It faces the Jewry Wall ruins, and houses artefacts from Iron Age, Roman, and medieval Leicester. The building is Grade II listed and located below Vaughan College, home to Leicester Universitys Institute for Lifelong-Learning. Construction began in 1960 and finished two years later; the building was designed by Trevor Dannatt. The museum is run by Leicester City Council and is free to enter. In 2004, as part of a scheme of cost-cutting on the part of Leicester City Council, it was proposed that the opening hours at the Jewry Wall Museum would be reduced. An interest group was created in response, and the Friends of Jewry Wall Museum have been actively promoting the museum since. Regardless of this, Leicester City Council reduced the museums opening times to save money, and the museum is closed for several months over the winter. Councillor John Mugglestone rationalised the decision at the time, saying: "At Jewry Wall, we have more curators than visitors". The museum was threatened again in 2011, when Leicester City Council announced plans to close the museum to save money. This decision was overturned following a motion by the City Councils backbench Labour Councillors, led by former Labour Council leader Ross Willmott.

Magazine Gateway

The Magazine Gateway is a Grade I listed building in Leicester, built circa 1410 as a gate into the Newark and Leicester Castle. It acquired its present name during the English Civil War when it was used for the storage of munitions. De Montfort University has built a new Business and Law School next to the building. In 2001 pedestrianisation of the area was completed, connecting the Magazine to the Newark.

Phoenix Square

Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre is a cinema, art gallery and café bar in the city centre of Leicester, England. The two modern cinema screens show everything from micro-budget independent films to the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and there are often festivals and events. The regularly changing art programme presents work by local and international artists, and the education programme provides courses for people of all ages to learn about, and create their own, film and art. The venue was formerly known as Phoenix Square, and has been previously referred to as Leicester Digital Media Centre. Work began on constructing the £21.5 million scheme in November 2007 and was completed in Autumn 2009: Phoenix Square officially opened on 19 November 2009. The cinema replaces the Phoenix Arts Centre, and maintains strong links with De Montfort University. The building houses a digital exhibition space and digital production facilities, two cinema screens, a screen room and screen lounge. Space is provided for 37 new creative businesses, as well as a cafe/bar open to the public.

Leicester Town Hall

Leicester Town Hall stands in the city centre of Leicester, England, in a square which contains a fountain. The building is the town hall of the city of Leicester and also contains Leicester Bike Park. The town hall was built on the former cattle market between 1874 and 1876 in the Queen Anne Style by Francis Hames and is a Grade II* listed building. Before it was built the Guildhall acted as the town hall. Leicester Town Hall covers an area of nearly 7,000 m2 and claims to be the most energy efficient in the UK following a £80,000 investment in 1994. The installation of a number of energy-saving measures has reduced heating costs by more than £13,000 in less than ten years. On the first Wednesday of each month, a free tour is given by a Blue Badge tourist guide, which starts at 2 pm and lasts up to 2 hours and concludes with tea and biscuits in the Lord Mayor's Tea Room. Contrary to the notice board outside, visitors do not need tickets for the tour. Some history is given of the building, including details of previous Lord Mayors etc. and one can visit the former courtroom and the current main council chamber.

Silver Arcade

Silver Arcade is a Grade II listed building in the centre of Leicester, England. A former shopping arcade, Silver Arcade was built by Amos Hall in 1889. The top floor was closed off in 2000, leaving the units on the ground floor occupied by a number of independent retailers. In 2008, the centre was the focus of a campaign by the Leicester Civic Society to reopen it. In 2010, plans were announced to reopen the top floors.

In 2010, after a new Phoenix Square opened on the other side of the city centre, it was reborn as an important music training and performance venue under the new name, Upper Brown Street Theatre, it has since been re-branded as Sue Townsend Theatre, in honour of the late author and playwright, Sue Townsend.

Nelson Mandela Park

The Nelson Mandela Park is a public park in Leicester, England. It is situated just inside the city centre near Leicester Prison and the Leicester Tigers Stadium. The park was named to celebrate Nelson Mandela. The parks facilities include a small childrens play area, flood-lighting, and public toilets. Various sports clubs use this green for practice meetings. Leicester Tigers Rugby Club were a user of this area before the club went fully professional. On Friday 1 August 2007, the local council held "Nelson Mandela Sports Festival", as a celebration of 21 years of the park having held the name. Important people of the community were present including Councillor Gary Hunt, the Mayor of Leicester. At the event, 21 trees were planted to mark the 21 years of the park and the 21 wards of Leicester. The event was filmed so it could be given to Nelson Mandela himself to watch.

Haymarket Shopping Centre

The Haymarket Shopping Centre is a shopping centre in the city centre of Leicester, England. It opened on the 4th of June 1973 as the Haymarket Centre and is the oldest shopping mall in Great Britain. It is located east of and adjacent to the Clock Tower. The shopping centre is owned by ING Real Estate Investment Management. The retail space is on two levels, three in the case of the two pre-existing buildings . The Haymarket Shopping Centre boasts around 65 outlets, a bus station, a two-stage theatre, and Haymarket House, and had previously boasted two nightclubs, Dinos restaurant and two enclosed foot bridges . Four wide pedestrian access points are located on the streets Haymarket, Belgrave Gate, Charles Street and Humberstone Gate. Noticeably, there are no doors so no bottlenecks occur during busy periods. Some of the outlets can only be accessed from the street and some can only be accessed from the mall. The larger stores can be accessed either way.

The Charlotte

The Charlotte is a real ale pub in Leicester, England, on the edge of the City Centre, on Oxford Street, opposite De Montfort University. The venue re-opened on the 19th October 2015. The Charlotte was originally named The Princess Charlotte, later to become simply 'The Charlotte'. The Charlotte was a nationally recognised 'circuit venue' on the live music scene, hosting many famous bands such as Carter USM, Radiohead, Elastica, The Cranberries, Pulp, The Stone Roses, The La's, Spiritualized, The Killers, Bloc Party, The Arctic Monkeys, Brian and the Teenagers, Kingmaker, Oasis, The Libertines, The Offspring, Razorlight, The Buzzcocks, Primal Scream, Muse and Kasabian. On January 15, 2009, it was announced the Charlotte was facing closure, after the operating company behind the venue went into administration. On March 10, 2009 it was announced that the Charlotte would remain closed for the foreseeable future, however it reopened on October 8, 2009. It was subsequently announced that the last ever night would be on March 13, 2010 and that the site would be developed into student flats. The Venue finally closed for good on March 13, 2010. On 11 April 2014 The Charlotte re-opened briefly as a pub hosting occasional live music sessions. It closed again just a few months later. In August 2015 it was announced that The Charlotte was being taken on by two real ale pub landlords from Leicester. The Charlotte opened as an independent real ale pub on 19th October 2015, serving microbrewery real ales from around the country seven days a week.

Welford Road Stadium

Welford Road is a rugby union stadium in Leicester, England, and is the home ground for Leicester Tigers. It is located between Aylestone Road and Welford Road on the edge of the city centre. The stadium has a capacity of 26,000, making it the largest purpose-built club rugby union ground in England; the capacity is planned to eventually reach 30,000. It hosted five full England national team matches between 1902 and 1923, and staged a single match at each of the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cups.

Charnwood Forest

Charnwood Forest is an upland tract in north-western Leicestershire, England, bounded by Leicester, Loughborough and Coalville. The area is undulating, rocky and picturesque, with barren areas. It also has some extensive tracts of woodland; its elevation is generally 600 ft and upwards, the area exceeding this height being about 6,100 acres . The highest point, Bardon Hill, is 912 ft . On its western flank lies an abandoned coalfield, with Coalville and other former mining villages, now being regenerated and replanted as part of the National Forest. The M1 motorway, between junctions 22 and 23, cuts through Charnwood Forest. The hard stone of Charnwood Forest has been quarried for centuries, and was a source of whetstones and quern-stones. The granite quarries at Bardon Hill, Buddon Hill and Whitwick are of national importance and supply crushed aggregate, much by train, to a wide area of southern Britain. The forest is an important recreational area with woodland walks, noted for their displays of bluebells in the early spring, rock climbing and hillwalking. Popular places with public access include Bardon Hill, Beacon Hill, Bradgate Park, Swithland Wood and the Outwoods.

All Saints Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Beeby, Leicestershire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

The City Rooms

The City Rooms is located in the heart of the City of Leicester in England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building. Outside in Hotel Street there is the statue of the Seamstress, although not intended to represent any particular person, it serves as a reminder of the importance the hosiery industry once played in Leicester. Cavendish House

Abbey Park is a public park in Leicester, England, through which the River Soar flows. It is owned and managed by Leicester City Council, Planning for the park was underway by 1879, as part of designs by the borough surveyors for the relief of flooding in the area. Opened on 29 May 1882 by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the park was created in an area that had previously been described as "marshy ground in a poor district" at a cost of over £40,000. The works included the widening and deepening of the river over a length of around a mile, with the excavated earth used to create mounds within the park, as well as the construction of stone weirs and locks. Three new bridges were constructed crossing the river. An artificial lake was created and over 33,000 trees planted. Excavations as part of the work discovered remains of animals including elephants and rhinoceros. The park was extended in 1932. The park has an area of 57 acres, and contains the site of the 12th century Leicester Abbey, which is marked out with low stone walls, and the ruins of Cavendish House (built in the 17th century by William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire using stone from the abbey). The house was used by Charles I after the siege of Leicester during the English civil war in 1645; after he left, his soldiers set fire to it leaving the house gutted. The charred stone window frame is still visible today. The abbey ruins contain a memorial to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who was buried in the grounds. He died while en route from York to London on 29 November 1530; a statue of him stands next to the Park's cafe. Two lodges designed by architect Mr. J. Tait were built at the Abbey Road entrance to the park. The park has regularly won the Green Flag Award, a national award made annually to parks which reach a high standard. It has formal gardens, a sensory garden, a boating lake and model boat lake, a miniature railway, visitor centre, cafe, children's play area with paddling pool, pets corner, tennis courts, a bowling green, and a bandstand. The park was the site of an annual flower show dating back to the 19th century, which included a swimming gala and evolved into the Abbey Park Show in the 1940s, with the addition a range of entertainment and displays. It continued until 1995, when it was abolished due to falling attendances and rising costs. It was also the site of the Pageant of Leicester, held in 1932. The Abbey Park Festival was an annual music festival which was held for over twenty years from 1981. The Abbey has been the site of training excavations by Archaeology students at Leicester University. Abbey Park now also houses the offices and studios of Takeover Radio within one of its Gatehouse Lodges.

De Montfort University Rowing Club

De Montfort University Rowing Club is the rowing club of De Montfort University, Leicester, and is situated on the city canalised section of the River Soar, boating from the Leicester Rowing Club boathouse. The club was founded in 1992 when Leicester Polytechnic changed to De Montfort University during the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.

ISKCON Leicester

ISKCON Leicester is a Hindu temple in Leicester run by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It occupies a Grade II* listed building in Granby Street in the centre of Leicester. The building was originally constructed in 1872-74 as a bank branch for Leicestershire Bank, now part of HSBC. The temple replaces an earlier temple in Thoresby Street in North Evington which was damaged in 2010 by a gas explosion.

The other woodland is larger and is an area of high ecological value, which holds Site of Special Scientific Interest status.
