Ostersund

Östersund is an urban area in Jämtland in the middle of Sweden. It is the seat of Östersund Municipality and the capital of Jämtland County. Östersund is located at the shores of Sweden's fifth largest lake, Storsjön, opposite the island Frösön, and is the only city in Jämtland. Östersund is the region's cultural and economical centre and by tradition a city of trade and commerce. Östersund had one of the most extensive garrisons in Sweden prior to its closure in the early 21st century. The city is the Mid Sweden University's largest campus site with approximately 7 000 students. With a total population of 44,327 Östersund is the 24th most populous city in Sweden, the 46th most populous city in Scandinavia, and by far the largest inland city in Northern Sweden. The city was the only Swedish city founded and chartered in the 18th century. Östersund was founded in order to create a trade monopoly over Jämtland whose inhabitants' lucrative trade annoyed the Swedish crown. The intention was to persuade the local farmers to deliver merchandise to middlemen in Östersund, but the population opposed this economic philosophy, and Östersund long remained small. It took until the end of the 19th century for Östersund to truly become a city, after the arrival of the railroad and the economic liberalization of that time. Östersund is situated in inland Scandinavia and connected to Sundsvall in the east on the Swedish coast, and Trondheim in the west at the shores of the Norwegian sea. Östersund is located in the middle of Scandinavia, in the middle of Sweden, in the middle of Jämtland County and in the middle of Östersund Municipality. As the most centrally located city in Sweden, the city credits itself as the centre of Sweden. Östersund is marketed as Vinterstaden — Winter City. Winter City as a project is run by the Municipality together with city enterprises. Östersund has had a long history as a centre of outdoor activities with a modern cross-country ski stadium and an actual piste in the city itself. Östersund has also hosted several World Championships in various sports such as biathlon, speed skating and ski orienteering along with Swedish National Championships in cross country skiing and snocross. The city has been the applicant city of Sweden for several Winter Olympic Games, but has yet to host one. The precursor to the Winter Olympic Games, the Nordic Games, were however held at several occasions in the city, due to lack of snow in Stockholm.

Oviken

Jämtland or Jamtland is a historical province in the center of Sweden in northern Europe. It borders to Härjedalen and Medelpad in the south, Ångermanland in the east, Lapland in the north and Trøndelag and Norway in the west. Jämtland covers an area of 34,009 square kilometres, 8.3% of Sweden's total area and is the second largest province in Sweden. It has a population of 112,717, the majority of whom live in Storsjöbygden, the area surrounding lake Storsjön. Östersund is Jämtland's only city and is the 24th most populous city in Sweden. Jämtland was originally an autonomous peasant republic, its own nation with its own law, currency and parliament. However, Jämtland lacked a public administration and was thus best regarded as an anarchy, in its true meaning. Jämtland was conquered by Norway in 1178 and stayed Norwegian for over 450 years until it was ceded to Sweden in 1645. The province has since been Swedish for roughly 370 years, though the population did not gain Swedish citizenship until 1699. The province's identity is manifested with the concept of a republic within the kingdom of Sweden, although this is only done semi-seriously. Carl XVI Gustaf became the Duke of Jämtland after his christening, a nominal title he still retains. Historically, socially and politically Jämtland has been a special territory between Norway and Sweden. This in itself is symbolized in the province's coat of arms where Jämtland, the silver moose, is threatened from the east and from the west. During the unrest period in Jämtland's history it shifted alignment between the two states no less than 13 times.

Frösö Runestone

Frösöstenen is the northern-most raised runestone in the World and Jämtlands only runestone. It originally stood at the tip of ferry terminal on the sound between the island of Frösön and Östersund. On it is inscribed: Austmaðr, Guðfastrs son, had this stone raised and this bridge built and Christianized Jämtland. Ásbjörn built the bridge. Trjónn and Steinn carved these runes. The following Old Norse person and place names appear in the inscription: Austmaðr An Old West Norse speaking man from Mainland Scandinavia. Similarly, Vestmaðr was an Old West Norse-speaking Briton. Guðfastr Jamtaland Trjónn Steinn The stone is also unique in that it was done in memory of Austmaðrs Christianization of Jämtland and bridge building, rather than as a cenotaph. The stone dates to between 1030 and 1050. It has now been relocated to the lawn in front of the local county seat due to the construction of a new bridge, between 1969 and 1971, on the original site.

Storsjön

Storsjön is the fifth largest lake in Sweden, with an area of 464 km² and a greatest depth of 74 m. It is located in the province of Jämtland in modern Jämtland County. From Storsjön runs the river Indalsälven and the lake contains the major island Frösön. The city of Östersund is located on the east shore of the lake, opposite Frösön. Storsjön is said to be the home of the sea creature Storsjöodjuret, not unlike Nessie, and every now and then there are new reports of people having spotted it. Descriptions of the creature have varied over the years. Some have described it as being serpentine in appearance, with multiple humps, a feline or canine-like head and grayish skin. Others have claimed that the creature is short in stature and morbidly obese, with a roundish skull. The ferry company Vägverket Färjerederiet provides two ferry lines crossing the lake, one from Norderön to Håkansta and one from Isön to Norderön. They are replaced by ice roads during the winter, usually January–April .

Jämtlands Bryggeri

Jämtlands Bryggeri is a microbrewery located in the small village of Pilgrimstad located in the Municipality of Bräcke in Jämtland, in north western part Sweden. The brewery started brewing beer in January 1996 and is one of Sweden’s smallest breweries. The outspoken policy of the brewery is to brew beer in small quantities in order to guarantee a high quality in the production. The yearly production amounts to 750.000 liters of beer. Today, the brewery has a standing assortment of eleven different brands of beers reflecting a number of various brewing techniques. The brewery is regularly awarded at the annual Stockholm Beer Festival (where approximately 600 brands of beers are competing). The company has competed in the festival the last eight years and has totally been awarded 58 gold medals, 28 silver medals and 14 bronze medals.

Berge Virgin Forest Nature Reserve

Berge Virgin Forest Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Jämtland County in Sweden. It is part of the EU-wide Natura 2000-network. The nature reserve protects an area of virgin forest in a hilly landscape, and also contains the Lake Gråssjön. Some parts of the forest is almost completely unaltered by human activity; for example, one tree in the nature reserve has been found to be 580 years old. The forest is mixed coniferous, and contains a lot of coarse woody debris. The unspoilt area is an important habitat for several unusual species, including lesser twayblade, heath spotted orchid and northern coralroot. It is also a preferred habitat for several birds, like osprey, red-throated loon and Eurasian three-toed woodpecker; the latter two are on the national Swedish red list.

Hoverberget

Hoverberget is a mountain on a peninsula in the southern part of the Storsjön lake. The mountain, a significant landmark and a Natura 2000 designated nature reserve, lies within Berg Municipality in the southern parts of Jämtland in northern Sweden. The village of Berg lies on the south slope of the Hoverberget, which is 255 m above the Storsjön and the surrounding area, and culminates at 548 m above sea level. Hoverberget is made of porphyry, and originates from the same period as the Scandinavian Mountains. For millions of years it has been moving eastwards, and it now lies isolated and apart from other mountains. The mountain is rich in flora, with several orchid species, and many of the plants grow at their northernmost growth boundary. There are several rare species of moss and lichen. The mountain also has a rich bird life, with many birds of prey such as the common kestrel, the Eurasian sparrowhawk and the long-eared owl. Besides more common mammals, Hoverberget is also home to Eurasian lynx. The tourist attraction called the Hoverberg Cave is170 m deep, and is the largest rock cave in Scandinavia. It was discovered 1897 by Jöns Väst, a Swedish-American. 81 m of the cave is accessible to visitors. Less known is the Fissure, a large ravine in the mountain with a length of about 400 m and a depth of about 25 m, that is visible from the west and even from the county highway 321. According to a folk tale, a giant called the Old Man of Hoverberg Lad resided in the cave, but he moved out when people began to tidy the cave. At the top of Hoverberget is a small café, which is open in the summer season. Adjacent to it is an observation tower, for those who want to look for the lake monster Storsjöodjuret, a folkloric phenomenon in the lake, or to enjoy the view.

Rogen Nature Reserve

Rogen Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Jämtland County in Sweden. It is part of the EU-wide Natura 2000-network. The nature reserve is centred around Lake Rogen and is part of a wider network of nature protection areas that extend also on the other side of the border with Norway. The landscape is distinctly characterised by Rogen moraine, a type of moraine named after the area. It consists of long, sinuous low hills interspersed with long lakes. In addition, large erratic boulders are spread over the land. In all directions, mountain tops — parts of the Scandinavian Mountains — rise to about 1,000 m . The highest peak in the area is Brattriet with an altitude of 1,200 m . The landscape was formed during the last Ice age, and has been described as "labyrinthine".

Skäckerfjällen Nature Reserve

Skäckerfjällen Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Jämtland County in Sweden. Skäckerfjällen literally means "The Skäcker mountains" and the large nature reserve covers this whole range, which is part of the Scandinavian Mountains. The highest peak is Sandfjället with an altitude of 1,230 m . It is an mountain landscape of a kind typical for the Scandinavian mountain range. Within the area, three old-growth forests exist which are rather different from each other. In the Strådalen area close to the border with Norway, the old-growth forest is dominated by large spruce trees, while in the area around Lake Lågsjön the forest is dominated by Scots pine, often in the form of krummholz. In Rutsdalen area, old-growth forest dominated by spruce is separated from mixed coniferous old-growth forest which grow on thin moraine. Two traditional mountain farms exist in the area. Their continuous existence has generated a cultural landscape with high biodiversity. The area is used by the Sami population for reindeer grazing all year around.
