Top Attractions in Jeju

Geomunoreum Lava Tube System

The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System is located between Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup and Weoljeong-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, Jeju-do. This lava tube system refers to a series of lava tube caves formed while basaltic lava flow which had erupted several times from the Geomunoreum volcano flowed in a north-northeast direction, down to the coastline for about 13㎞. It is estimated that it was formed between about 100 and 300 thousand years ago. Lava tubes so far included in the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System are the Seonheul Vertical Cave,Bengdwigul Lava Tube, Bukoreumdonggul Lava Tube, Daerimdonggul Lava Tube, Mangjanggul Lava Tube, Gimnyeonggul Lava Tube, Yongcheondonggul Lava Tube, and Dangcheomuldonggul Lava Tube towards the sea. However, it is estimated that more tubes will be found. Bukoreumdonggul Lava Tube, Mangjanggul Lava Tube and Dangcheomuldonggul Lava are designated as natural monuments. Although these lava tubes are extremely large and ancient, the internal morphological features are well-preserved and the inner scenery is considered to be outstanding. As a result, "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes" are UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites. As study results about the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System are published in academic journals, this system is credited officially.

Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls

Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, not to be confused with the Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, is a three-tier waterfall located on Jeju Island. Cold water flows out of the ceiling of a cave to make the waterfall. Between the precipice of the waterfall and the lower clay layer, water springs out. In first cascade, the cliff is 22 m high and the water falls into Cheonjeyeon pond which is 21 m deep. From there, the water goes to the second waterfall and falls 30 m and continues to the third waterfall. Eventually, the water reaches the ocean. Cheonjeyeon means Pond of the Emperor of Heaven. According to Korean legend, seven nymphs would descend from the heavens at night and bathe in the waterfalls pond. The falls are a popular tourist attraction on Jeju-do. The warm temperate forest around Cheonjeyeon Waterfall was designated Natural Monument No. 378 in 1993 because of the rare plants it contains and its value for scientific research. Rare plants such as the solipnan plants or skeleton fork fern can be found around the falls in the crevices of rocks. Since ancient times, it is thought that standing under the waterfall on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month can cure diseases by the eighth lunar month, though swimming is now prohibited. On the May of even-numbered years, the Chilseonyeo Festival is held at this location. The waterfall is one of the three famous waterfalls of Jeju, the other two being Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and Jeongbang Waterfall. Above the falls is Seonimgyo Bridge, which symbolizes the legend of Cheonjeyeon.

Jeongbang Waterfall

Jeongbang Waterfall is a famous waterfall on Jeju Island. The waterfall is 23 m high and is very close to the ocean. Depending on the level of recent rainfall, it can be up 8 m wide. The source of the waterfall is the stream Donghong-chun. According to some sources, Jeongbang Waterfall is the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly in the ocean. However, this may be disputed, since its water falls into a sheltered cove rather than straight into the ocean. Located near Seogwipo, Jeongbang Waterfall is a popular tourist attraction. It is considered Yeongjusipgeong, one of the ten greatest scenic wonders of Jeju. Legend states that a holy dragon lived underneath it. It was said that the dragons spirit is contained in the water which can cure diseases and bring rain during drought. Furthermore, a nearby small waterfall is said to resemble a servant waiting on a lord. A legend states that Emperor Jin of China sent a servant, Seobul, to fetch the magical herbs of eternal youth from Mount Halla. Though he failed to find the herb, he encountered Jeongbang Falls on the way and he left his autograph, Seobul Gwaji, on the cliff wall, where it no longer remains. An inscription on the wall of the waterfall saying "Seobulgwacha", refers to Seobuls journey. The waterfall is one of the three famous waterfalls of Jeju, along with Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and Cheonjeyeon Waterfall. A smaller waterfall, Sojeongbang Waterfall is 300 m to the east.

Manjanggul

The Manjanggul Lava Tube is located in Gimnyeong-ri, Gujwaeup, Jeju City and is 23 m in breadth and 30 m in height. As the lava tube stretches for as far as an approximate 8,928 m, its length ranks amongst the top 10 in the world. It is also the second longest lava tube in Jeju island. It is regarded as having significant scientific and heritage value, owing to its excellent condition of preservation despite its age of formation (about 300,000 to 200,000 years ago). Lava stalactites and lava stalagmites, lava columns, lava flowstone, lava helictites, lava blisters, cave coral, benches, lava rafts, lava bridges, lava shelves, grooved lava striations, and ropy lava are well-preserved. Among them, a lava column of 7.6 m is the largest known in the world. There are three entrances and No. 2 heading southward is open to the public. Entrance No. 3 contains the most favorable habitats for cave life and between Entrances 1 and 2, there is a lower level main tube where most of the living creatures can be found. In the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, the Manjanggul Lava Tube has the greatest number of living creatures, including the Jeju cave-spider. In the upper part of Entrance 2, there are at least 30,000 common bent-wing bats forming the largest colony of bats confirmed to be living in Korea so far.

Nexon Computer Museum

The Nexon Computer Museum is a museum on Jeju Island, South Korea. It opened on July 27, 2013. It is known as one of the first permanent museum in Korea that is dedicated for the history of computer and video game. In 2016, the museum houses 6,600 items including personal computers, video game consoles, arcades, and software. The museums supporters include institutions such as Computerspielemuseum Berlin and International Center for the History of Electronic Games, and IT companies such as Nexon, Softmax, Gamevil, Oculus VR, Thalmic Labs, Take-Two Interactive, Sony Computer Entertainment, and etc. The principle of Nexon Co. Ltd.s museum is to interact and communicate with a range of visitors from across boundaries, by collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting and educating historic digital artifacts.

International Convention Center Jeju

International Convention Center Jeju opened in 2003 on Jeju Island, South Korea, in the Jungmun Resort near the city of Seogwipo. It began under private-public consortium ownership and is becoming fully publicly owned. It consists of a larger oval-shaped glass structure and a smaller round glass annex, and surrounding facilities. The largest hall accommodates 4,300 people, with various smaller halls and meeting rooms. The building consists of a large elliptical fully glass-wall structure four floors above ground connected to a smaller circular glass building housing restaurant and coffee shop, and is set on a cliff over the Pacific Ocean. The building houses the Jeju Convention Bureau. In 2007 construction began on the adjoining 50,000 sq. meter lot to build a 600-room hotel-condominium to serve as ICC Jeju's "anchor hotel," scheduled to be completed in 2009.

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is a waterfall on Jeju Island, South Korea. Literally, the name Cheonjiyeon means sky connected with land . It is one of the main tourist attractions on Jeju-do. It is 22 m high and 12 m wide. Though water always falls in one particular area, depending on the amount of recent rain, the water may spread out. At the bottom of the waterfall is an artificial pond that is 20 m deep. Two small dams help keep the water at a specific level. Large volcanic rocks form landbridges that allow tourists to pose for photographs in front of the falls. These falls are characterized by its trachyte andesite rocks. The source of Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is a spring that comes out of the floor of the Somban Stream. The stream Yeonhee-chun is the source of the waterfall. The waterfall is one of the three famous waterfalls of Jeju, the other two being Cheonjeyeon Waterfall and Jeongbang Waterfall. In order to reach the waterfall, visitors must walk on a landscaped trail. Near the beginning of the path is a traditional Korean raft called te-u, symbolizing Korean culture. It is the most popular at night, because the falls are illuminated. At night, the "Hidden Face," a formation of rocks, may be visible with the night lights, and the falls are popular for lovers. The Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is also known for its diverse plant and animal life, as the path to the waterfall goes through a garden of subtropical plants. Migratory ducks, Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus, Psilotum nudum, and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Xylosma congestum, and Camellia are some examples of the flora and fauna around the falls. Just before reaching the falls on the path, one must cross a bridge from which a wide variety of koi fish can be seen below. Along the way are three piles of stacked or balanced rocks that are a common sight throughout the whole of South Korea. In olden days, a person would place a small stone under a larger stone and pray for the health and prosperity of their family. Its pond is known for being a habitat of the marbled eel, which is mainly active at night. Known as the Mutae eel, it is classified in Korea as Natural Monument no. 27.

Seonim Bridge

Seonimgyo Bridge is an arch bridge on Jeju Island over Cheonjeyeon Waterfall that has seven nymphs carved on both sides. It crosses from east to west over the stream between the second and third tiers of Cheonjeyeon waterfall. The bridge is also called Chilseonyeogyo or Seven Nymphs Bridge. The nymphs symbolize the Korean legend of the descent of seven beautiful nymphs from heaven at night. Seonimgyo Bridge is the first bridge with Ojakgyo design in the region. It was completed in 1984, and cost the Korea Tourism Organization about 400 million won to construct. There is a fee for tourists who use the bridge. There are 100 guard rails and 34 stone lanterns which light up at night. On the bridges steel columns, there are 14 nymphs, 7 on each side with each nymph about 20 m in length. All the nymphs are playing their own musical instruments. Seonimgyo Bridge is 128 m in length, 78 m in height, 4 m in width, and 230 tons in weight. It is a tourist attraction on Jeju-do. The bridge connects Cheonjeyeon with the Jungmun Tourist Complex, and is intended for pedestrian use.

Songaksan

Mt. Songak is a simple volcano on Jeju Island which has double craters and a parasitic volcano. Crater 1 is about 500 m in diameter, 1.7 km in circumference. Crater 2, the mouth of the volcano in Crater 1, is about 400 m in diameter, 69 m in depth and leans vertically. From Sanyisu-dong to the summit and ridge of Mt. Songak there are various trails along the coast and on the volcano. Mt. Songak is one part of olle road route 10. Mt. Songak makes a shore cliff to the south, and the south part of crater forms a low and flat grassland in front of which lie slopes. Black and red volcanic ash still remain inside the crater. There is little forest except some areas of planted pines. The volcanos soil is arid, and its ecosystem is very simple. Few plants grow in Mt. Songak because due to grazing on its fields. Typical plants are perennial Artemisia and broomrape. Because the Japanese army occupied Mt. Songak to use as a steppingstone toward its invasion of China in World War II, there are remains of their presence including an airstrip and airship sheds. Under the shore cliff, there are still 15 trenches remaining from that era. From the observation platform, the southernmost Marado and Gapa islet look very close. Diverse fish such as sawedged perch and black porgy are caught here.
