Bergen

Bergen , English: pronunciation Burgen), historically Bjørgvin, is a city and municipality in Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. At the end of the first quarter of 2016, the municipality's population was 278,121, and the urban population was 250,420 as of 1 January 2015, making Bergen the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers an area of 465 square kilometres and is located on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The city centre and northern neighbourhoods are located on Byfjorden, "the city fjord", and the city is surrounded by mountains; Bergen is known as the city of seven mountains. Many of the extra-municipal suburbs are located on islands. Bergen is the administrative centre of Hordaland and consists of eight boroughs—Arna, Bergenhus, Fana, Fyllingsdalen, Laksevåg, Ytrebygda, Årstad and Åsane. Trading in Bergen may have started as early as the 1020s. According to tradition, the city was founded in 1070 by king Olav Kyrre; its name was Bjørgvin, "the green meadow among the mountains". It served as Norway's capital in the 13th century, and from the end of the 13th century became a bureau city of the Hanseatic League. Until 1789, Bergen enjoyed exclusive rights to mediate trade between Northern Norway and abroad and it was the largest city in Norway until the 1830s when it was surpassed by the capital, Oslo. What remains of the quays, Bryggen, is a World Heritage Site. The city was hit by numerous fires over the years. The "Bergen School of Meteorology" was developed at the Geophysical Institute beginning in 1917, the Norwegian School of Economics was founded in 1936, and the University of Bergen in 1946. From 1831 to 1972, Bergen was its own county. In 1972 the municipality absorbed four surrounding municipalities, and at the same time became a part of Hordaland county. The city is an international centre for aquaculture, shipping, offshore petroleum industry and subsea technology, and a national centre for higher education, media, tourism and finance. Bergen Port is Norway's busiest in both freight and passengers with over 300 cruise ship calls a year bringing nearly a half a million passengers to Bergen, a number that has doubled in ten years. Almost half of the passengers are German or British. The city's main football team is SK Brann and the city's unique tradition is the buekorps. Natives speak the distinct Bergensk dialect. The city features Bergen Airport, Flesland, Bergen Light Rail, and is the terminus of the Bergen Line. Four large bridges connect Bergen to its suburban municipalities. Bergen is well known for having the mildest winter climate, though with a lot of precipitation, of all cities in the Nordic countries. In December - March, the temperature difference between Bergen and Oslo can be up to 30 degrees Celsius, despite the fact that both cities are located at approximately 60 degrees North. The Gulf Stream keeps the sea relatively warm, considering the latitude, and the mountains protect the city from cold winds from the north, north-east and east.

Ullensvang

Ullensvang is a municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Hardanger. The administrative centre is the village of Kinsarvik. Other villages in the municipality include Lofthus, Utne, Vikebygd, and Alsåker. There are 3,369 inhabitants as of 1 January 2014. The number of inhabitants has shown a decrease of almost 700 people since 1980. This development can be seen in light of the general depopulation of rural Norway. The main inhabited part of Ullensvang municipality lies just to the west of Hardangervidda National Park, which covers most of the Hardangervidda plateau, Europe's largest mountain plateau. Most inhabitants live in the narrow coastal mountainsides and valleys along the Hardangerfjorden and Sørfjorden. The largest urban areas in Ullensvang are Kinsarvik and Lofthus. The Norwegian National Road 13 is one of the main roads through the municipality, and it crosses the Hardangerfjorden via the Hardanger Bridge in the far northern part of the municipality.

Eidfjord

Eidfjord is a municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality is located in the traditional district of Hardanger. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Eidfjord, where the majority of the municipal population lives. The other major population centre in the municipality is the village of Øvre Eidfjord. Eidfjord is situated at the end of the Eidfjorden, an inner branch of the large Hardangerfjorden. The village of Eidfjord is a major cruise ship port of call. Eidfjord has several tourist sites, like the Sima Power Plant which is built into the mountain itself, the Måbødalen valley, and the Vøringsfossen waterfall which has a free fall of 182 metres . Large parts of the Hardangervidda are located in Eidfjord. The Hardangervidda Natursenter, a visitors centre and museum for Hardangervidda National Park, is located in Øvre Eidfjord.

Norheimsund

Norheimsund is the administrative centre of the municipality of Kvam in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern side of the Hardangerfjord, about 80 kilometres from the city of Bergen. The village of Øystese lies about 4 kilometres to the northeast and the village of Vikøy lies about 3 kilometres southeast of Norheimsund. The village of Steine is a suburb, immediately to the west of Norheimsund. The 2.5-square-kilometre village has a population of 2,224; giving the village a population density of 890 inhabitants per square kilometre , the largest settlement in the whole municipality. Norheimsund has a lot of tourist traffic, especially in the summers. The waterfall Steinsdalsfossen, as of 2006 the 6th most visited natural tourist attraction in Norway, is located in Steine, just west of Norheimsund. Norheimsund is the seat of municipal government and largest commercial center in the municipality with about 50 stores. There is also some industry in the village with factories, wood processing plants, and food processing plants. Norheimsund Church is located in the village. The Norheimsund Upper Secondary School is also located here. The waterfront area in Norheimsund has been redeveloped and beautified, and has won awards for development and for attractiveness .

Sveio

Sveio is a municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. Sveio is a border district that is sometimes considered to be located in the traditional district of Haugalandet since it is located on the Haugalandet peninsula, but it is also considered to be in the traditional district of Sunnhordland since it is located in southern Hordaland county. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sveio. Other villages in the municipality include Auklandshamn, Førde, Våga, and Valevåg. Sveio is the site of the Ryvarden Lighthouse which marks the western entrance to the Hardangerfjorden. The lighthouse is automated and the old keepers house and building have now been converted into art galleries, the Flókemuseum, and a cafe. The composer Fartein Valen lived much of his life in Valevåg in northern Sveio. Valenheimen, the house he lived in is open to the public and the Fartein Valen Festival is held annually in Sveio. The Triangle Link bridge-tunnel network is based in northern Sveio, connecting the islands to the north to the mainland. The southern entrance to the Bømlafjord Tunnel is located along the European route E39 highway, just south of the village of Valevåg.

Mosterhamn

Mosterhamn or simply Moster is a village in Bømlo municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located on the small island of Moster in the southeastern part of the municipality of Bømlo. The village lies along the Bømlafjorden. The 1.75-square-kilometre village has a population of 1,354; giving the village a population density of 774 inhabitants per square kilometre and making it the second largest urban area in the municipality. The village is notable since the Old Moster Church is here and that is the site of the Mostratinget, a thing in the year 998 when Olav Tryggvason is said to have brought Christianity to Norway and made it the national Church of Norway. Prior to the opening of the Triangle Link bridge-tunnel network in 2001, Mosterhamn was one port of the Mosterhamn-Valevåg Ferry which crossed the Bømlafjorden.

Tyssedal

Tyssedal is a village in Odda municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located on the shore of the Sørfjorden about 6 kilometres north of the town of Odda. Tyssedal is located in a charming environment in a valley between the fjord to the west and the mountains leading up to the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau to the east. Tyssedal is a typical monotown, depending upon the energy received from the hydropower station. The ilmenite smelter "Tinfos Titan and Iron" is located here and it is the largest employer in the village. The smelter was converted from making aluminium in the late 1980s. The first hydropower station in Tyssedal, Tysso I, is today part of the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry. The 0.62-square-kilometre village has a population of 692, giving the village a population density of 1,116 inhabitants per square kilometre . Tyssedal Church is located in this village. The lake Ringedalsvatnet and the Trolltunga cliff are located just to the east, higher up in the valley.

Alversund

Alversund is a village in Lindås municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located on the mainland of the Lindås peninsula, along the shore of the Alverstraumen strait. The village sits between the villages of Alverstraumen and Alver , forming a large village area that is often referred to as Alversund. The Alversund Bridge spans the Alverstraumen strait between Alversund and the village area of Alverstraumen located on the southern tip of the island of Radøy, creating a vital connection between Radøy and the mainland. In Alversund there is a primary school counting 400 pupils. Alversund Church dates from 1879 and it is located in the village, along the main road. It was built of wood and has 200 seats. The village was historically the administrative centre of the old municipality of Alversund which existed from 1885 until 1964. Among other things one will find Den Gamle Bokstova, a book café where a small group of people meets 6-8 times a year to discuss literature. The building dates from the 16th century and is a former bank, library, and community house.

Osøyro

Osøyro is the administrative centre of Os municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village lies on the southwestern part of the Bergen Peninsula, along the western shore of the Fusafjorden, about 25 kilometres south of the city centre of Bergen. The European route E39 highway runs through the village on its way to Bergen. There is a car ferry from the east side of Osøyro to the village of Fusa, across the Fusafjorden. Os Church is located in the village. Osøyro has several smaller suburban villages surrounding it: Søfteland to the north, Søvik to the northwest, Hagavik to the west, Søre Øyane to the southwest, and Halhjem to the south. The 8.77-square-kilometre urban area has a population of 12,195 which gives the area a population density of 1,391 inhabitants per square kilometre .

Rådal

Rådal is a neighborhood in the city of Bergen in Hordaland county, Norway. It is located at the border between the boroughs of Fana and Ytrebygda. The center of the area is the shopping center Lagunen Storsenter. While the area has no official borders, it is regarded as the common name for the basic statistical units of Krohnåsen in Fana and Skeie, Siljustøl, and Holten in Ytrebygda. These had 5,967 residents in 2009 and covered 5.5 square kilometres . The post address for Rådal also includes the areas Grimstad, Steinsvik, Nordås, Skjold, and Smørås. The area features the commercial area Laguneparken, Nordahl Grieg Upper Secondary School, Rå School, Fana Stadion, Fana Golf Club, Siljustøl Museum, and the former Rådal Station on the Nesttun-Os Railway. BIR has a garbage dump at Rådal. The second stage of the Bergen Light Rail will extend the system to Rådal, probably in 2012.

Øvre Eidfjord

Øvre Eidfjord is a village in Eidfjord municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located at the southern end of the lake Eidfjordvatnet, about 7 kilometres south of the municipal centre of Eidfjord. Øvre Eidfjord sits along the river Bjoreio, at the entrance to the Måbødalen valley. There are about 200 residents of Øvre Eidfjord. The Norwegian National Road 7 runs through Øvre Eidfjord, through the Måbødalen valley, past the famous Vøringfossen waterfall, and then continues on, over the Hardangervidda plateau to Eastern Norway. The Hardangervidda Natursenter, the visitor centre for the nearby Hardangervidda National Park, is located here in Øvre Eidfjord. There was a primary school in Øvre Eidfjord until 2005 when it was closed. Since then, local students have had to travel 7 kilometres to Eidfjord for their schooling.

Ask

Ask is a small village in the eastern part of Askøy municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village lies along the Byfjorden on the eastern shore of the island of Askøy. The village of Ask is well known for the farming of strawberries which are sold in the marketplace in the nearby city of Bergen during the summer season. Due to its pleasant climate and its location on an island near Bergen, Ask was the location of a kongsgård (i.e., royal farm – the Norwegian equivalent of a palace estate). Ask gård (literally Ask farm), with the farm number 1, was the basis for the name of Askøy. This was also the site of the extremely old church and churchyard which was in use from around the year 1200 until 1741. Today the old church site is marked by a stone cross. A newer Ask Church was built in the centre of Ask in 1741. Ask village is the saga location for a famous dispute over inheritance between Egill Skallagrímsson and Berg-Önundr. When Berg-Önundr refused to allow Egill to claim his wife Ásgerðr's share of her father's inheritance, Egill challenged Önundr to a holmgang. The local dialect of the village also reflects the continuing close tie to Bergen, with the dialect being more similar to that of Bergen than that of the rest of Askøy; the connection was reinforced into modern times as the wealthy merchants and other residents of Bergen summered there. Ask has had famous residents up to recent times. Fridtjof Nansen lived in a house near Kongshaugen in a short period. Amalie Skram lived at Lien at Ask, near Ask Dambruk, from 1876 to 1878, in the same house where the headmaster, Nils Peder Åland, lived for 40 years.

Fjell

Fjell is a municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Midhordland. The municipality consists of several islands west of the city of Bergen, the major ones being Litlesotra, the northern part of Store Sotra, Bildøy, Bjorøy, Misje, and Turøy. The administrative centre of Fjell is the village of Straume. Some of the villages in Fjell include Ågotnes, Fjell, Foldnes, Knappskog, Knarrevik, Kolltveit, Landro, and Sekkingstad. Due to the opening the Sotra Bridge to the mainland in 1971 and its proximity to the city of Bergen, the population has grown from less than 7,000 to over 23,000, and as of 2008 it has one of the highest population growth rates in Norway. The result is major traffic jams over the bridge every day. A highway that leads to Bergen has reduced the traveling time to only fifteen minutes from the community centre at Straume on Litlesotra to the center of Bergen.
