Yamagata is the capital city of Yamagata Prefecture located in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. As of October 2015, the city had an estimated population of 252,632 and a population density of 663 persons per km². The total area was 381.3 square kilometres . Yamagata is located in mountainous southeast Yamagata Prefecture. The Mogami River passes through the city, which includes Mount Zaō within its borders.

Yonezawa

Yonezawa is a city in Yamagata Prefecture, in the Tohoku region of northern Japan. Yonezawa is most famous for its local delicacies and for being a castle town that was once home to the Uesugi clan, including the daimyō Uesugi Yozan. As of October 2015, the city has an estimated population of 85,475 and a population density of 156 persons per km². The total area was 548.51 square kilometres .

Yama-dera

Yama-dera is about a twenty minute train ride northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan at the foot of the steep hill Hōshū-yama. The temple is a nationally-designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site. The area is named after the common name of the temple of Risshaku-ji, founded in 860 AD by the priest Enninwho is better known in Japan by his posthumous name, Jikaku Daishi . In 847 he returned to Japan from China and in 854, he became the chief priest of the Tendai sect at Enryaku-ji. Risshaku-ji was founded as a branch temple of Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto. Even today the ritual fires brought from Enryaku-ji are still burning in the main temple. It developed into the major Heian period temple for rural Dewa province . This main temple, the Konpon-chūdō, an important cultural asset, is said to have been built in 1356 by Shiba Kaneyori, lord of Yamagata Castle. Most of Risshaku-ji was destroyed during the local wars of the early 16th century and it was rebuilt in 1543 under the monk Enkai. By the Edo period Risshaku-ji was a powerful institution possessing a fief of 1,420 koku. The present Konpon-chūdō is a Muromachi period construction of beech, which is rare as a building material. The temples clinging to the steep rocky hillsides are picturesque and unusual. The thousand step climb through the dense cedar trees is worth making to the temples at the top and for the view from them. An important cultural asset, the Heian period seated wooden image of Yakushi Nyorai is the principal image of the main temple. Yamadera holds many other important cultural assets in its treasure house, the Hihokan, including standing wooden images of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai and Amida Nyorai, a seated wooden image of Dengyo Daishi, a hanging wooden mandala of Buddha, and a stone monument of the Nyohō-kyō Sutra from 1144. Yama-dera is where the well-known haiku poet Matsuo Bashō wrote his famous haiku "ah this silence / sinking into the rocks / voice of cicada" in 1689. A museum of Bashos writings and paintings and other related art, the Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum, is a short walk up the hill on the opposite side of the steep valley. In 1996 the Ministry of the Environment selected the cicadas of Yama-dera as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

Mount Zaō

Mount Zaō is a complex volcano on the border between Yamagata Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. It consists of a cluster of stratovolcanoes and is the most active volcano in northern Honshu. The central volcano of the group includes several lava domes and a tuff cone, Goshiki-dake, which contains a crater lake named Okama. Also known as the "Five Color Pond" because it changes color depending on the weather, it lies in a crater formed by a volcanic eruption in the 1720s. The lake is 360 metres in diameter and 60 m deep, and is one of the main tourist attractions in the area. One striking feature of Zaōs famous ski resorts is the snow monsters that appear in mid-winter. Strong wind over the nearby lake fling water droplets which freeze against the trees and their branches, until near-horizontal icicles begin to form. Falling snow settles on the ice formations, and the end result is a grotesque figure of a tree. The effect of a full forest of such trees gives visitors a ghostly impression. Zaō is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. Rotaria rotatoria and Pinnularia spp. are found in the acidic Okama Lake.

Zaō Onsen

Zaō Onsen is a famous hot spring area on Mount Zaō in the northern part of Honshū, the main island of Japan. Records date back as far as 110 AD. A wounded warrior is said to have drawn an arrow out of his body and cleaned the wound at a spring only to find that the injury healed miraculously quickly and well. The sulfur springs of Zaō Onsen smell of rotten eggs, which only connoisseurs know to appreciate, and which saves Zaō from being overrun by tourists. Although Mount Zaō stretches between Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures, the town where Zaō Onsen is located was recently merged into Yamagata City. The hot spring is accessible via the Tōhoku Expressway.

Zaō Ropeway

The Zaō Ropeway is the name of Japanese aerial lift system, as well as its operator. The route, consisting of two lines, climbs Mount Zaō at Zaō Onsen, Yamagata, Yamagata. The lines transport skiers of Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort and rime spectators in winter, tourists and mountain climbers in summer. Sanroku Line is an aerial tramway between Zaō-Sanroku and Juhyō-Kōgen , the cable length 1,734 metres . Sanchō Line is a funitel gondola lift between Juhyō-Kōgen and Zaō-Jizō-Sanchō (蔵王地蔵山頂, "Mount Zaō Jizō Summit"), the length 1,872 m (6,142 ft). Refurbished in 2003, Sanchō Line is the third funitel line to be introduced in Japan, or the first for Japanese ski resorts. The two lines are fairy crowded in winter, but skiers tend to use other chairlifts to reach Juhyō-Kōgen. From Juhyō-Kōgen, only Sanchō Line can reach the summit.

Namekawa Great Falls is a waterfall located in the city of Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, on a branch of the Abukuma River. It is one of "Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990. The falls form several streams over a large 100 metres outcropping of Rhyolite.

Nanatsu Falls

Nanatsu Falls is a waterfall located in the city of Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, on a branch of the Bonji River. It is one of "Japans Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990. As the name of the falls implies, it splits into seven streams over a large 100-metre outcrop of dacite. The falls were formerly on the pilgrimage route to the sacred Three Mountains of Dewa.

Shiraito Falls

Shiraito Falls is a waterfall in the Furukuchi district of Tozawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, on a branch of the Mogami River. It is one of "Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990. The Mogami River passes through the Mogami Gorge, dropping from 500 meters to 300 meters in altitude with a series of 48 waterfalls, of which the Shiraito Falls is the largest. At the base of the falls is a small chapel dedicated to Fudo Myoo and the Kusanagi Hot Springs are located nearby.

Mount Gassan

Mount Gassan is the highest of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa . The Gassan Shrine stands at the mountains summit, 1984 meters above sea level. Due to heavy winter snowfall, the mountain and shrine are inaccessible for long periods of the year; however, skiing is possible on the mountain from April to mid-summer.

Yamagata Museum of Art

Yamagata Museum of Art opened in Yamagata, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, in 1964. The Museum's annex opened in 1968. In 1985 the new three-storey main building opened; the annex was renovated the following year. The collection incluces works by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, and Takahashi Yuichi, as well as Yosa Buson's six-panel byōbu of 1779, Oku no Hosomichi (Important Cultural Property). Many of these Impressionist works are from the collection of Yoshino Gypsum Co., Ltd (吉野石膏), deposited at the Museum.

Ken Domon Museum of Photography

The Ken Domon Museum of Photography (土門拳記念館, Domon Ken kinenkan) was opened in 1983 in Sakata, Yamagata (Japan), the birthplace of the photographer Ken Domon. On the occasion of becoming the first honorary citizen of Sakata in 1974, Domon donated his entire collection of works to the town. This prompted the decision to build a museum in his honour, and it was the first museum dedicated to photography in Japan. The museum has about 70,000 prints of works by Domon. It also has works by winners of the Domon Ken Award and another prize, the Domon Ken Cultural Award (土門拳文化賞, Domon Ken Bunka-shō)) which is presented by the city in Domon's honour. The museum building was designed by noted architect Yoshio Taniguchi, and won the 9th Isoya Yoshida Award in 1984.

Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum

Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum (米沢市上杉博物館, Yonezawa-shi Uesugi hakubutsukan) opened in the former grounds of Yonezawa Castle in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, in 2001. The collection of some 18,800 objects includes the National Treasures Scenes In and Around the Capital (紙本金地著色洛中洛外図), by Kanō Eitoku, and Uesugi Family Documents (上杉家文書).

Kumano Shrine

Kumano Shrine is a historic shinto shrine in Miyauchi in the city of Nanyō, Yamagata, Japan. It dates from the 9th century, and is one of only three large Kumano shrines in Japan. The shrine is located on a small mountain in the district of Miyauchi in Nanyo. Two main features of the shrine are a giant tree which locals believe to be several hundred years old, and a traditional tsurigane bell. The bell is unique because during World War II, most large iron bells in Japan were melted down for their material. The bell at the shrine was saved by order of the Emperor, and is thus one of the few original preserved bells in Japan. The Kumano-Taisha festival is held at the shrine each year on July 25.

Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum

The Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum is a museum in the city of Yamagata in northern Japan just outside the reconstructed Great Eastern Gate of Yamagata Castle. It focuses on the place in history of Mogami Yoshiaki and his role in building the foundations of present-day Yamagata. The museum opened on 1 December 1989 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of modern Yamagata City. Its purpose is to preserve and study, display and make accessible to the public historical items from Yoshiakis time when the Yamagata Domain was the fifth largest feudal domain in Japan. Armory, swords and firearms from the historic battles of the 16th century and later are exhibited, along with art works, old maps of the castle town and official documents connected with the Mogami clan and its history. Among the museums most prized items exhibited are the large standing screen of the Battle of Hasedo, and Mogami Yoshiakis helmet and battle command baton. There are also special exhibitions of old and modern swords. The museum has English information on the exhibits available. Admission is free. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed Mondays.

Three Mountains of Dewa

The Three Mountains of Dewa refer to the three sacred mountains of Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono, which are clustered together in the ancient province of Dewa . Holy to the Japanese Shinto religion and especially the mountain ascetic cult of Shugendo, Dewa Sanzan are a popular pilgrimage site visited by many, including famed haiku poet Matsuo Bashō. The Haguro Five-story Pagoda is a recognised national treasure of Japan.

Mount Haguro

Mount Haguro is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa, Japan. As the lowest of the three mountains, standing at 414 m, it is the only one that is accessible throughout the year. A path of 2,466 stone steps leads to its summit amidst 600-year-old sugi trees, past the famous Gojū-tō five story pagoda and numerous shrines. The steps and the pagoda are listed as National Treasures. The Sanzan-Gosai-den temple at the summit venerates the spirits of all three mountains. The summit can also be reached by a limited bus service. In addition to religious pilgrims, travellers often stay at the Saikan temple lodgings.

Mount Yudono

Mount Yudono is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa . The Yudono-san Shrine, the most holy of the Dewa Sanzan shrines, is sited on the mountain. Pilgrims have to enter the shrine itself barefoot, and photography is not allowed. Due to heavy winter snowfall, the mountain and shrine are inaccessible for long periods of the year.

Saikan

Saikan is a sprawling temple lodging atop Mt. Haguro, part of the Three Mountains of Dewa . It connects directly to the main temple of the complex through a long passageway that climbs further up the mountain. Elaborate Gohonbo Bassho-zen meals are served to visitors. Traditionally, it is reached by climbing up 2,466 stone steps up the side of the mountain, but it can also be reached by car or bus.

Mount Asahi

Mount Asahi is a mountain located on the border of Yamagata Prefecture with Niigata Prefecture, in northern Japan. It is part of the Asahi Mountain Range, which is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park. The mountain has a peak Ō-Asahidake with a height of 1,870 metres which is wholly within Yamagata Prefecture, and a secondary peak Ko-Asahidake with a height of 1,648 metres to the northeast. Another peak in the same range, Nishi-Asahidake to the northwest has a height of 1,814 metres . It is one of the mountains described in Kyūya Fukada's book 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum

The Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum was established in 1989 as part of the cultural building boom in Yamagata celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the city. Located about 20 minutes by train from Yamagata Station, it sits on the south side of the steep river valley facing Yamadera to the north, the historic temple founded in 860 which is one of the areas most beloved sacred sites and top sightseeing destinations. The Museum focuses on the life of Matsuo Bashō who perfected the art of haiku, the concise 5-7-5 syllable verse form now appreciated and written around the world. Many treasures from Bashos own hand and writing brush are regularly displayed, along with works of literati and artists from his time, and of those who followed later. Special exhibitions on related themes are also regularly mounted in the gallery. The spacious grounds and gardens are beautiful all year round, and the facility includes many traditional Japanese style meeting rooms and tea rooms which are regularly used for citizens tea ceremonies and other cultural programs, including seminars on literature and haiku taikai poetry writing contests　, in both Japanese and English. The beautiful buildings in traditional sukiya-zukuri (数寄屋造り）tea ceremony room style were designed by the well-known architect Masao Nakamura. Information is also available in English on the exhibitions and on Bashos life and his major work Oku no Hosomichi "The Narrow Road to the Deep North," his travel journal of haiku and paintings based on his trip to the area.
