Toyama

Toyama is the capital city of Toyama Prefecture, Japan, located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in the Chūbu region on central Honshū, about 200 km north of the city of Nagoya and 300 km northwest of Tokyo. Historically, Toyama was the capital of Etchu Province. The modern city was incorporated on April 1, 1889, withdrawing from Kaminiikawa District. As of May 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 417,324, with 162,663 households and a population density of 336.05 persons per km². The total area is 1,241.85 km². Toyama is served by Toyama Airport and Toyama Station of West Japan Railway Company, with Toyama Light Rail, Toyama Chiho Railway. The Toyama Plain is good farmland and historically it was a point of strategic and traffic importance. During the Feudal Age, it was frequently turned into a battlefield. Toward the end of the period of confusion, Sassa Narimasa became the governor of Etchū Province (the ancient name for present Toyama), and he accomplished the feat of taming the rampaging rivers, bringing about an even more flourishing agricultural industry in Toyama. In the early Edo Period, a positive industrial promotion policy was implemented on the production of medicine and washi (Japanese paper). Also, thanks to the improvement of both land and sea transportation routes, these industries thrived and Toyama became known nationwide as the province of medicine. After the Meiji Restoration, heavy and chemical industries developed in Toyama, based on abundant electricity which was generated in some hydro power stations in the mountains near-by. During World War II, Allied POWs were sent to Toyama as forced labor. Although the streets of Toyama were devastated by an air raid in August 1945, Toyama has become one of the most influential cities on the Japan Sea side with its good water supply, drainage system and thriving agricultural, forestry, fishery, commercial and manufacturing industries. The city was completely destroyed on the night of August 1–2, 1945, when 173 B-29 bombers of the American 73rd Bomber Wing dropped incendiary bombs on the city. 1.87 square miles (4.8 km2), or about 99.5 percent, of the urban center was destroyed. At the time of the bombing, the city was a center for aluminum, ball-bearing and special steel production. The city during the time had a population of around 150,000 residents. Toyama has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with hot, humid summers and cool winters. Precipitation is abundant throughout the year, particularly in July, September and from November through January. Despite winter in Toyama being relatively mild, its position near the Sea of Japan places it within the heavy snow belt of Japan and on average 3.8 m (12 ft) of snow falls each season, almost all of it from December through March, as well as occasionally experiencing some tremendous amounts of snowfall.

Mount Okukane

Mount Okukane is a mountain located between the towns of Tateyama and Kurobe in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The mountain has an elevation of 1,543 m . Mount Okukane rises dramatically between the Kurobe Gorge and the Haba Valley to form, at 600 metres , one of the foremost sheer rock faces in Japan. The mountain is primarily composed of granite and is part of the Hida Mountains, also known as the Northern Japan Alps. Mount Okukane, together with the Kurobe and Sarutobi gorges, were designated a Special Natural Monument and Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1964.A

Tateyama Ropeway

The Tateyama Ropeway is Japanese aerial lift line in Tateyama, Toyama, operated by Tateyama Kurobe Kankō. The line, opened in 1970, makes a part of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. It is famous for being the single span line without any aerial lift pylon.

Kurobe Dam

The Kurobe Dam or Kuroyon Dam , is a variable-radius arch dam on the Kurobe River in Toyama Prefecture on the island of Honshū, Japan. It supports the 335 MW Kurobe No. 4 Hydropower Plant and is owned by Kansai Electric Power Company. At 186 metres in height, it is the tallest dam in Japan. It was constructed between 1956 and 1963 at a cost of ¥51.3 billion yen. The project was a difficult engineering feat for the rapidly growing post–World War II Japan, and claimed the lives of 171 people.

Komaki Dam

The Komaki Dam is an arch-gravity dam on the Shō River about 2.5 km southeast of Shogawa in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It was constructed between 1925 and 1930. The dam has an associated 90.2 MW hydroelectric power station which was commissioned in 1930. Of the nine dams on the Shō River it is the second furthest downstream.

Hannoki Falls

Hannoki Falls, in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, is the tallest waterfall in Japan at a height of 497 m . However, it only has water from April to July when the snow covering the Midagahara plateau melts, so its neighbor, Shōmyō Falls, is usually considered the tallest. Hannoki and Shōmyō falls are therefore twin waterfalls.

Shōmyō Falls

Shōmyō Falls are located in the town of Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Shōmyō-daki is the highest waterfall in Japan at 350 m . The falls have four stages: the first 70 m, the second 58 m, the third 96 m and the last 126 m high. The greatest amount of water flows over the falls in the early summer, when the snow in the Tateyama Mountains melts. Its neighbor, Hannoki Falls, is usually considered the seasonably tallest, as it only has water from April to July when the snow on Midagahara plateau melts. As seen in the photo, Hannoki and Shōmyō falls are twin waterfalls.

Mount Tate

Mount Tate is located in the southeastern area of Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the tallest peaks in the Hida Mountains at 3,015 m and, along with Mount Fuji and Mount Haku, it is one of Japans "Three Holy Mountains" . The climbing season for Mount Tate is from April until November. It was first climbed by Saeki no Ariyori during Japans Asuka period. The area was designated the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park on December 4, 1934.

Mount Tsurugi

Mount Tsurugi is located in the eastern area of Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the tallest peak in the Hida Mountains at 2,999 m . It is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, and is called "the most dangerous mountain" climbable. Tsurugi has a number of routes which approach world class long routes. It is recognised in Japan as "the" premiere mountaineering peak in winter. Although dangerous, its death toll is a small fraction of those who have died on Japan's much smaller, but more lethal Tanigawa-dake.

Toyama Castle

Toyama Castle, also called Azumi Castle, is a castle in Toyama city, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Built in 1543, the castle and its surrounding land is maintained by the government of Japan as a public park. In 1581, Sassa Narimasa, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga became lord of the castle. After the Honnoji Incident of 1585, there was a falling out between Sassa Narimasa and Hideyoshi, and Hideyoshi attacked the castle with 100,000 soldiers, destroying it. Maeda Toshinaga later rebuilt the castle and temporarily used it as his retirement home until much of it burned down in 1609. In 1661 Maeda Toshitsugu rebuilt the castle again and made it his home. His descendents ruled over Toyama from here until the Meiji Restoration, when it was dismantled in 1870. Post-WWII, it was rebuilt as a modern concrete structure in 1954. Nowadays, the castle remains were renovated as the Toyama Castle Park, a place to relax and it is utilized as 富山市郷土博物館ーToyama Local History Museum, and 富山市佐藤記念美術館ーSato Memorial Museum, noted for its collection of utensils for Tea ceremony and antiques.

Kurobe Cable Car

The Kurobe Cable Car (黒部ケーブルカー, Kurobe Kēburukā), officially the Cable Line (鋼索線, Kōsaku-sen), is a Japanese funicular line in Tateyama, Toyama, operated by Tateyama Kurobe Kankō. The company also operates another funicular with the same official name. The line is a part of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The line goes entirely under a tunnel to protect it from snow. It opened in 1969.

Tateyama Cable Car

The Tateyama Cable Car is a Japanese funicular line of Tateyama Kurobe Kankō in Tateyama, Toyama, with its official name Cable Line . The company also operates another funicular, Kurobe Cable Car with the same official name. The line is a part of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. It opened in 1954.

Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama is a museum in Toyama, Toyama. It is one of Japan's many museums which are supported by a prefecture. The museum, which opened in 1981, stands within Jōnan Park in central Toyama. It displays a permanent collection and also temporary exhibitions.

Kokutai-ji

Kokutai-ji, originally Tosho-ji, is one of fourteen autonomous branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen, founded in 1300 by the monk Jiun Myoi in Toyama, Japan. In 1327 Emperor Go-Daigo gave the temple the name Kokutai-ji, and Jiun Myoi became Seisen Zenji. Kokutai-ji was once also a temple of the Fuke sect, and housed komusō. Rinzai monks and priests still dress and practice suizen as komusō during memorial ceremonies in remembrance of Jiun Myoi.

Botanic Gardens of Toyama

The Botanic Gardens of Toyama are botanical gardens located at 42 Kamikutsuwada, Fuchu-machi, Nei-gun, Toyama, Toyama, Japan. They are open daily except Thursdays; an admission fee is charged. Garden construction began in 1989. The gardens first opened to the public in 1993, with greenhouses following in 1996 and 2000. The gardens promote research as well as education, aiming to cultivate, preserve, investigate, and research plants. To this end the gardens publish a scholarly journal, the Bulletin of the Botanic Gardens of Toyama. Today the gardens contain about 5,000 Japanese and foreign plant species. Notable collections include plants of the Japan Sea coast and of Yunnan, China, and tropical and subtropical plants. Outdoor gardens contain a Japanese tree peony collection, plants of Yunnan, fragrant plants, flower displays, clematis, coastal plants and plants of low-altitude plains and marshes, and a forest of chestnuts and Japanese oaks, etc. Greenhouses include a tropical plant house, orchid house, tropical fruit house, Alpine plant house, and Yunnan greenhouse.

Himi Seaside Botanical Garden

The Himi Seaside Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located at 3583 Banchi, Tanagida, Himi, Toyama, Japan. It is open daily except Tuesdays; an admission fee is charged. The garden opened in 1996 beside Matsudae-no-Nagahama, a seaside promenade along a beach of white sands and green pines mentioned in the Manyōshū. It is set within a striking building designed by architect Itsuko Hasegawa. The garden specializes in seaside plants, and features a greenhouse with water tank of mangroves, tropical and subtropical plants, climbing plants, seaside plants from various places in Japan, and an insect exhibit.

Mount Yakushi

Mount Yakushi is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, reaching the height of 2,926 m . It is situated in Japan's Hida Mountains in Toyama Prefecture. It was specified for Chūbu-Sangaku National Park on December 4, 1934.

Tateyama

Tateyama is a town located in Nakaniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. As of 2015, the town has an estimated population of 26,850. The total area is 307.29 km².

Ohara Dam

The Ohara Dam is a gravity dam on the Shō River in Ohara village about 17 km south of Nanto in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It was constructed between 1939 and 1942. The dam has an associated 97.6 MW hydroelectric power station which was built in two parts. The first part of the power station was commissioned in 1942 and the second part of the power station was commissioned in 1980. Of the nine dams on the Shō River it is the fourth furthest downstream.

Sakaigawa Dam

Sakaigawa Dam is a dam in Nanto, Toyama Prefecture and Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is named for the Sakaigawa River (a tributary of the Shō River), upon which it is built. The dam has an associated 27 MW hydroelectric power station about 2.9 km (1.8 mi) downstream. It was commissioned in June 1993.

Senzoku Dam

The Senzoku Dam is a gravity dam on the Togagawa River (a tributary of the Shō River) about 20 km (12 mi) south of Shogawa in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It was completed in 1974. The dam sends water to the 32.7 MW Togagawa II hydroelectric power station 5.7 km (3.5 mi) to the west on the Shō River. It was commissioned in 1973.

Futagami Manyo Botanical Gardens

The Futagami Manyo Botanical Gardens are botanical gardens located in Takaoka, Toyama, Japan. The garden site occupies about 10,000 m², and contains both wildflowers and many plant varieties mentioned in the Manyōshū anthology.
