Winnipeg

Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba, Canada. It is located near the longitudinal centre of North America, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The name Winnipeg comes from the Western Cree words for Lake Winnipeg nearby, referring to muddy or brackish water. The region was a trading centre for aboriginal peoples long before the arrival of Europeans. French traders built the first fort on the site in 1738. A settlement was later founded by the Selkirk settlers of the Red River Colony in 1812, the nucleus of which was incorporated as the City of Winnipeg in 1873. As of 2011, Winnipeg is the seventh most populated municipality in Canada. Known as the "Gateway to the West", Winnipeg is a railway and transportation hub with a diversified economy. This multicultural city hosts numerous annual festivals, including the Festival du Voyageur, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, and Folklorama. Brandon

Brandon is the second-largest city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It is located in the southwestern corner of the province on the banks of the Assiniboine River, approximately 214 km west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and 120 km east of the Saskatchewan border. Brandon covers an area of 465.16 km2 and has a population of 46,061, while its census metropolitan area has a population of 53,229. It is an important hub of trade and commerce for the Westman region as well as parts of southeastern Saskatchewan and northern North Dakota, an area with a combined population of around 180,000 people. Brandon was incorporated in 1882, having a history rooted in the Assiniboine River fur trade as well as its role as a major junction on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Known as The Wheat City, Brandons economy is predominantly associated with agriculture, however it also has strengths in food processing, manufacturing, education, health care, and transportation. The city is home to Brandon University, Assiniboine Community College, and the Manitoba Emergency Services College. Canadian Forces Base Shilo is located 35 km east of Brandon, and maintains close socioeconomic ties with the city. The Keystone Centre, one of the largest consolidated entertainment, convention, agriculture and recreation complexes in Canada, is the home of the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. In 2012, Brandon was ranked as the 6th best place to live in Canada by MoneySense magazine.

Riding Mountain National Park

Riding Mountain National Park is a national park in Manitoba, Canada. The park sits atop the Manitoba Escarpment. Consisting of a protected area 2,969 km2, the forested parkland stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding prairie farmland. It was designated a National Park because it protects three different ecosystems that converge in the area; grasslands, upland boreal and eastern deciduous forests. The park is home to wolves, moose, elk, black bears, hundreds of bird species, countless insects and a captive bison herd. It is most easily reached by Highway 10 which passes through the park. The south entrance is at the townsite of Wasagaming, which is the only commercial centre within the park boundaries. The park was first protected in 1929 and had much of its public infrastructure created during the 1930s by labourers participating in Canadas great depression relief programs. Much of this early construction survives to this day. During World War II it was home to a prisoner of war camp which has since been dismantled. In 1986, Riding Mountain was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

Just one block north of Portage and Main, the Exchange District comprises twenty city blocks and approximately 150 heritage buildings, and it is known for its intact early 20th century collection of warehouses, financial institutions, and early terra cotta clad skyscrapers.

Churchill

Portage la Prairie

Portage la Prairie /ˈpɔrtɨdʒ lə ˈprɛərɪ/ is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2011, the population was 12,996 and the land area of the city was 24.67 square kilometres . Portage la Prairie is located approximately 75 kilometres west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway, and sits on the Assiniboine River, which flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba was built to divert the flood waters. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie. According to Environment Canada, Portage la Prairie has the most sunny days during the warm months in Canada. It is the administrative headquarters of the Dakota Tipi First Nations reserve.

Portage & Main

Downtown Winnipeg is centred on Portage Avenue and Main Street, and is bounded by the Assiniboine River on the south, Colony and Balmoral Streets on the west, Notre Dame Avenue, Princess Street, and Logan Avenue on the north, and the Red River on the east. It includes the Exchange District, Central Park, The Forks, and Winnipeg's Chinatown. The downtown area is roughly three square kilometres. Portage Avenue is the city's busiest thoroughfare. Winnipeg Square, the MTS Centre, Portage Place, and the flagship store of the Bay are all located on the downtown section of this street. Most of the downtown is operated by the downtown Winnipeg biz, The ED and CEO of the Biz is Stefano Grande. The biz offers a green team and a security team called the Watch. On Main Street are Winnipeg's City Hall, Union Station, and the Manitoba Centennial Centre, which includes the Manitoba Museum, the Planetarium, the Centennial Concert Hall and the Winnipeg Railway Museum. Although over 60,000 people work downtown, only 13,470 people actually live in the Downtown area. There are several residential projects under construction on Waterfront Drive and in the Exchange District, and the residential population of the area is projected to increase substantially in the next few years.

Gillam

Gillam is a town on the Nelson River in northern Manitoba, Canada. It is situated between Thompson and Churchill on the Hudson Bay Railway line. Gillam receives limited VIA rail passenger service at the Gillam railway station. Manitoba Provincial Road 280 links Gillam to the rest of Manitoba, making it one of the northernmost communities in the province accessible by year-round road. To go beyond towards Churchill only a rail route is available year-round. Many residents of Gillam are employed by Manitoba Hydro at three of Manitobas largest hydro dams—Kettle Generating Station, Long Spruce Generating Station, and Limestone Generating Station— located within Gillams boundaries.

Selkirk

Selkirk is a city in the western Canadian province of Manitoba, located about 22 kilometres northeast of the provincial capital Winnipeg on the Red River, near . A vertical lift bridge over the Red River connects Selkirk with the smaller town of East Selkirk. The city is connected to Winnipeg via Highway 9 and is served by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The city was named in honour of Scotsman Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk, who obtained the grant to first establish a colony in the Red River area in 1813.

Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie

The Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The museum is housed in the atrium area of the Wallace Building at the University of Manitoba. It is educational, interactive and publicly accessible. The menagerie features complete skeletal replicas of four creatures. Three of the specimens are marine: a gigantic, vicious fish, the worlds largest sea turtle and an enormous, formidable mosasaur . The city is bordered by the Rural Municipality of Hanover, and the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie . The name of "Steinbach" is translated from German as "Stony Brook" and was first settled by Mennonites in 1874. They were ethnic Germans from Ukraine. The city continues to have a strong Mennonite and German influence today; more than 50 percent of the residents claim German heritage. Steinbach is found on the eastern edge of the Canadian Prairies, while Sandilands Provincial Forest is a short distance east of the city. Steinbach is primarily an agricultural community; however, as the regional economic hub of southeastern Manitoba, Steinbach has a trading area population of about 50,000 people. The city also has many service and commercial businesses to serve the population. Steinbach is the third fastest-growing census agglomeration in Canada. Out of the eight fastest-growing agglomerations, Steinbach is the only one located outside Alberta. The city had a population growth of 22.2% between the 2006 and the 2011 census periods. The museum was designed by Herbert Henry Gatenby Moody of Moody and Moore in 1965. The museum is the largest heritage centre in Manitoba and the world and focuses on human and natural heritage. It has planetarium shows and a Science Gallery hall. The Institute for stained glass in Canada has documented the stained glass at the Manitoba Museum.

Neepawa

Neepawa is a town in Manitoba, Canada located on the Yellowhead Highway at the intersection with Highway 5. As of 2011 its population was 3,629. Neepawa was incorporated as a town in 1883. It is located in the Rural Municipality of Langford and bordered to the north by the Rural Municipality of Rosedale. Neepawa is the self-proclaimed Lily capital of the world in part because of its Lily Festival. The town has also been named "Manitobas Most Beautiful Town", more than any other community in the province.

Robert B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy

The Robert B. Ferguson Museum of Mineralogy is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is located at the University of Manitoba in the Wallace Building. The museum got its start in 1918 by way of a donation from geologist Joseph Winthrop Spencer. His 1,100 mineral and rock specimen formed the basis of the early museum. The museum has grown over the years through various donations. Part of the collection is on display for the benefit of students. One sixth of the collection is displayed in the Wallace Building, and is arranged from the most chemically and structurally simple to progressively more complex. Many of the most attractive mineral specimens are on public display at the Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie.

Living Prairie Museum

The Living Prairie Museum is a 12 hectare tall grass prairie preserve located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was discovered in 1968 when a local sub-committee of the International Biological Program surveyed Manitoba for native prairie plant communities. Of more than 60 sites that were researched, only four were found uncultivated. Ironically, one of the largest undisturbed sites was discovered in a residential area of Winnipeg. Today a vestige of this original prairie community has been set aside as a City of Winnipeg Nature Park- Living Prairie Museum. LPM is home to over 160 species of prairie grasses and wildflowers, as well as a great array of prairie wildlife. In Manitoba only 1/20th of 1% of original tall grass prairie remains. The Living Prairie Museum is one of the few preserves of this once vast ecosystem. This museum is defined by the historical interpretation of the Tall Grass Prairie of the Winnipeg Region. The museum has an interpretative centre with displays on prairie history and ecology as well as an interactive art installation titled lost_landscape by Winnipeg artist Collin Zipp.

Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park

Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park is a provincial park located in Manitoba, Canada. Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park comprises Hecla Island, Grindstone, Black Island and a number of other small islands. Hecla Island is approximately 1084 square km and is surrounded by Lake Winnipeg, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. The park lies adjacent to the northeast side of the Rural Municipality of Bifrost. The island was settled by the second wave of Icelandic immigrants in 1876. The population thrived for a number of years until faced with the hardships of winters, disease and poor economic outlook for commercial fishing and farming. The only school on the island closed in 1970. The Provincial government established the island as a provincial park in 1969 and encompased Grindstone to create Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park in 1997. Landscapes are varied, and include areas of coniferous and mixed forests, limestone cliffs and silica sand beaches, as well as marshes, bogs, fens and wet meadows. Classified as a Natural Park, its purpose is to preserve areas that are representative of the Mid Boreal Lowland portion of the Manitoba Lowlands Natural Region; and accommodate a diversity of recreational opportunities and resource uses. Currently, Hecla Island boasts a number of tourist attractions from a campground, resort hotel . In 2013 the resort was purchased by new owners and operates as Lakeview Resorts The resort features sandy beaches, summer homes, a full-service marina and world class 18-hole golf course. The golf course and marina are operated privately and are independent of the provincial park.

Fort Dauphin

Fort Dauphin, was built in 1741 near Winnipegosis, Manitoba with Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye, the western military commander, directing construction. The area provided a post located between the Assiniboine River and the Saskatchewan River. It was named for the Dauphin prince of France. A second Fort Dauphin was built in 1767 on the north shore of Lake Dauphin, so both the fort and the lake had the same name. This fort was built by French fur traders after the era of the western military commanders. As with many of the forts of the times, they kept the same names while changing locations to facilitate trade with the First Nations and to secure better physical locations. The site at Winnipegosis was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1943.

St. Matthew's Anglican Cathedral

St. Matthews Cathedral, is the Anglican cathedral in Brandon, Manitoba. The cathedral is located in a residential neighbourhood on 13th Street near Victoria Avenue. Built in between 1912 and 1913 to designs by Brandon architect W.A. Elliott, whose name is on other designated heritage buildings in Brandon Manitoba such as Johnson House, Christie House, and the Central Firehall. The St. Matthews Cathedral was designed in English Gothic Revival style, and constructed by the firm of William Bell and Son, the cathedral is a red brick and limestone building, with a complex floor plan, variety of roof lines, crenelations and tall lancet windows. The central tower is located at the crossing and is the focal point of the building. Inside, the cathedral is elegant, with Gothic inspired windows and furnishings, all beautifully maintained. The Institute for stained glass in Canada has documented the stained glass at St Matthews Anglican Cathedral. The cathedral church hosts numerous concerts and events, both secular and religious, which are held throughout the year.

Saint Boniface Cathedral

Saint Boniface Cathedral is a Roman Catholic basilica and the cathedral of Saint Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is an important building in Winnipeg, and is the principal church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Boniface, serving the eastern part of Manitoba province as well as the local Franco-Manitoban community. The basilica sits in the centre of the city at 190 avenue de la Cathédrale, Saint Boniface.

Asessippi Provincial Park

Asessippi Provincial Park is a provincial park located in the Rural Municipality of Riding Mountain West, near Inglis, Manitoba, Canada about 100 km west of Dauphin. The Park is 23.2 km2 . The focal point is the Lake of the Prairies also known as Shellmouth Reservoir. The lake has one of the largest walleye fisheries in Manitoba. The Park includes a large campground with over 100 mostly serviced sites. Asessippi Ski Resort is a place where families can enjoy a fun time while skiing/snowboarding, tubing, among others. Many schools book annual ski trips at the resort during the winter months.

Birds Hill Provincial Park

Birds Hill Provincial Park is a provincial park in Manitoba, Canada. It is located 24 kilometres north of Winnipeg on Highway 59, and covers approximately 8300 acres . The area is named after Dr. Curtis Bird, first speaker of the Manitoba provincial legislature in 1873, whose father had been a factor in the Hudsons Bay Company and received a large land grant at this location. Since the area is higher than the surrounding terrain, what is now Birds Hill Park served early settlers as a refuge from flooding in the years 1826 and 1852. It is part of the RM of Springfield, with a relatively small portion lying within the Rural Municipality of St. Clements. The provincial park features a mixture of aspen and oak forest with open prairie/savannah, spruce, bog areas and mixed boreal forest communities, not commonly found so close together.

Grand Beach Provincial Park

Grand Beach Provincial Park is a provincial park in Manitoba, Canada. It is located on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg, and has large white sand dunes and ancient beaches from the end of the last ice age. Lake Winnipeg is one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world, and the largest within the borders of southern Canada. The park is approximately an hour and twenty minutes drive from Winnipeg and is located in the westernmost part of the Rural Municipality of Alexander and the northernmost part of the Rural Municipality of St. Clements. There are numerous tourist attractions, which include food and merchandise vendors, recreation facilities, bike, hiking, and ski trails, a fishing dock, a boardwalk, and camping facilities. The park attracts thousands of visitors a year, and is a very popular tourist destination. The park is a sanctuary for the piping plover, an endangered species of bird that nests on the beach. Bald eagles, bears, sea gulls, terns, and pelicans are among a wide variety of species that inhabit the area.

Nopiming Provincial Park is a provincial park in Manitoba, Canada. It is located on the southeast side of the province, along the boundary with Ontario. The parks name comes from the Anishinaabe word noopiming, meaning "in the woods/brush" used in reference to coming off a lake and heading inland. Another translation of "Nopiming" from the Anishinaabe language is "Entrance to the Wilderness".

Pembina Valley Provincial Park

Pembina Valley Provincial Park is a provincial park in southern Manitoba, Canada. It is located 47 kilometres south-west of Morden, Manitoba, Canada on Highway 3, Highway 31, and Highway 201, and covers approximately 440 acres . The park was officially opened on October 5, 2001 by Premier Gary Doer and James Richardson, representing the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Pembina Valley Provincial Park is Manitobas 75th provincial park. The park contains approximately 12.7 km of hiking trails. In 2009, a 24 m single-span steel bridge and 9 m observation tower were added to the park. A Rocha Canada operates a Field Study Centre on 100 acres immediately adjacent to the park, and assists parks staff in conducting interpretive walks. A Rocha offers environmental, place-based learning programs for children, youth, and educators. They also operated a BB, which earned the Pembina Valley Tourisms 2010 Award of Distinction, for travellers visiting the park that may wish to stay nearby. The park is located at the extreme southwest corner of the Rural Municipality of Stanley, and the extreme southeast corner of the Rural Municipality of Pembina.

Island Lake

Island Lake is a lake in northeastern Manitoba in Canada, near the Ontario border. The lake covers a total area of 1,223 square kilometres, making it the 6th largest lake in the province. The lake is in the Hayes River drainage basin. The Island Lake River flows north from the northwest section of the lake into Gods Lake via Goose Lake and Beaver Lake. Gods Lake drains north through Gods River into the Hayes River.

Kiskitto Lake

Kiskitto Lake is a lake in the province of Manitoba in Canada north of Lake Winnipeg. The lake is a part of the Nelson River watershed and is located northwest of Kiskittogisu Lake on the west channel of the Nelson River. The west channel flows through the north ends of Playgreen Lake, Kiskittogisu Lake and Kiskitto Lake into Cross Lake at the Manitoba Hydros Jenpeg Generating Station and Dam. The lake is about 57 km long.

Collections can be:
- Public (Anyone can add attractions to your collection)
- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Uses

Showcase local attractions that you endorse
Clubs
Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead
