Top Attractions in Jharkhand

Ranchi

Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand, and its third most populous city. Ranchi was the centre of the Jharkhand movement, which called for a separate state for the tribal regions of South Bihar, northern Orissa, western West Bengal & the eastern area of what is present-day Chhattisgarh. The Jharkhand state was formed on 15 November 2000 by carving out the Bihar divisions of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas. The name Ranchi is derived from the previous name of the Oraon village at the same site, Archi. "Archi" derives from the Oraon word for bamboo grove or stave. According to legend, after an altercation with a spirit, a farmer beat the spirit with his bamboo stave. The spirit shouted archi, archi, archi and vanished. Archi became Rachi, which became Ranchi. One of the historically significant neighborhoods of Rachi is Doranda (duran "दुरङ" means song and daah "दअः" means water in the Mundari language). Doranda lies between the Hinoo & Harmoo Rivers, where the civil station, treasury and church established by the British Raj were destroyed by rebel forces during the Sepoy Mutiny.

Baidyanath Temple

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple, also known as Baba dham and Baidyanath dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva. It is located in Deoghar in the Santhal Parganas division of the state of Jharkhand, India. It is a temple complex consisting of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath, where the Jyotirlinga is installed, and 21 other temples. According to Hindu beliefs, the demon king Ravana worshipped Shiva at the current site of the temple to get the boons that he later used to wreak havoc in the world. Ravana offered his ten heads one after the another to Shiva as a sacrifice. Pleased with this, Shiva descended to cure Ravana who was injured. As he acted as a doctor, he is referred to as Vaidhya . From this aspect of Shiva, the temple derives its name.

Saranda forest

Saranda forest is a dense forest in the hilly region of West Singhbhum district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. This area used to be the private hunting reserve of the Singh Deo family . The forest covers an area of 820 km². Saranda literally means seven hundred hills. Thalkobad is a scenic village at a height of 550 m in the heart of the forest. Thalkobad is about 46 km from Manoharpur, and about 160 km from Jamshedpur. Ho people inhabit the area, which is dotted with iron ore mining towns including Gua, Chiria, Kiriburu and Noamundi. Sal is the most important tree in the area and it seems to have a preference for the rocky soil of the area. Although sal is a deciduous tree and sheds its leaves in early summer, the forest undergrowth is generally evergreen, which has such trees as mangoes, jamun, jackfruit, and piar. Other important trees are mahua, kusum, tilai, harin hara, gular, asan. The reserved forests are the haunt of many animals. Wild elephants are common in Saranada and Porahat forests. Herds of sambar and chital roam about the forests. Bison is still found. Tigers were never numerous but they are there. Leopards are more common. 1100 hectares of virgin forests of 40 per cent canopy cover is under iron ore mining leases. Several new aspirants for mining lease are in the waiting. The forest of Saranda is the home range for several elephants and also a very important overlapping habitat of the elephants from adjacent Keonjhar district of Orissa. The perennial rivers, Karo and Koina, pass through these forested areas supporting a diverse floral and faunal resource. Since 2000 the area is under influence of Communist Party of India group and hence is an unsafe place for tourist.

Hazaribagh National Park

Hazaribagh National Park, located 19 km from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, India and about 135 km from Ranchi is also a sanctuary adorned with scenic beauties. The park has also the same features as that of Betla National Park to some extent. The park has tigers, panthers, sambhars, spotted deer, bisons and a number of mammalian faunas. There are some towers which the tourists use to behold the beasts. A canteen is also there to cater. The park is approachable by all weather metalled road. The Cheetal, Kakar, Nilgai, Sambar and Wild Boar are among the most easily and often spotted animals particularly near the waterholes at the time of the dusk. The population of the tigers is very less. According to 1991 Census, there were 14 tigers in the park. The tigers are often considered extremely difficult to sight. A 111-kilometre long stretch of the road in the sanctuary takes the tourists to the remotest corners and masonry towers of the park. The road, strategically laid down, offers excellent opportunities for the view of the wild animals. The tribal population also lives around the sanctuary. The ark has many watchtowers that act as the perfect hideouts to see the wildlife in its natural surroundings. Hazaribagh town is connected by road to Ranchi 91 km, 128 km, Gaya 130 km, Patna 235 km, Daltongunj 198 km, and Calcutta 434 km . Regular bus services connect the town with Koderma, Hazaribagh Road railway station, Patna, Gaya, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Daltongunj and other nearby places. Unmetered Taxis, Auto Rickshaws, Cycle Rickshaws and Taxis are available for the park from the Hazaribagh town. The approximate charge for a taxi is Rs. 160 for a two-way journey. Sighting of wild boar, sambar, nilgai, cheetal, and kakar is assured especially near the waterholes at dusk. Tigers being less in number-14 according to the 1991 census-are difficult to sight. The sanctuary stretches over 186 square km of undulating country and steep hills with dense tropical forests and grass meadows.

Jagannath Temple

Jagannath Temple in Ranchi was built by king of Barkagarh Jagannathpur Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, during 1691. Completed on Christmas 1691, it is located about 10 km from the main town. The temple is on top of a small hillock.. Similar to the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, this temple is built in the same architectural style, although smaller. And similar to the Rath Yatra in Puri, an annual fair cum rath yatra is held at this temple in the month ofAashaadha, attracting thousands of tribal and non-tribal devotees not only from Ranchi but also from neighbouring villages and towns and is celebrated with much pomp and vigor. The temple has been built on a hill top. To reach the top visitors can climb the stairs or take the vehicle route. There are many steps and the climber needs to rest intermittently before resuming. People also take the vehicle route leading directly to the top . To facilitate the arduous climb to the top the management of the temple have made provisions for fresh water and the shade of a huge tree that many tourists generally make use of once they reach the top. The view of the city from the top is breathtaking. The temple collapsed on 6 August 1990. With the active participation of the then State Government of Bihar, and some devoted patrons the reconstruction of the temple started on 8 February 1992 and has now been fully restored. The temple has regained back its former glory. And devotees and ardent worshippers make a beeline to the temple every year.

Keenan Stadium

Keenan Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Jamshedpur, India. It is currently used mostly for cricket and football matches. It is also known as a venue for archery. The stadium is named after John Lawrence Keenan a former general manager of the Tata Steel. The stadium is situated in Northern Town area of Bistupur & is owned by Tata Steel. It has a capacity of 19,000 people. Since being built in 1939 the ground has hosted Ranji Trophy matches for the Bihar now Jharkhand cricket team. The venue staged its first international match in December 1983 when West Indies beat India in a One Day International. The ground has staged a further 9 One Day Internationals out of which India has won only 1, the most recent in April 2006 when England beat India by five wickets.This stadium became infamous, for crowd turning violent and throwing crackers on field during India against West Indies match in 2002/03. Sourav Ganguly scored a 100 to help India win its only match here.

Ranchi University

Ranchi University is a university in Jharkhand state of India. It was established on 12 July 1960 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university, and its first vice chancellor was Vishnudeo Narayan Singh. It is headquartered in Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. The university has a total student intake of around 90,000 students from its affiliated colleges. It has a central library with approximately 150,000 books for the academic needs of the students. There are a total of two male hostels and four female hostels in the university campus situated at Kutchery Road, Ranchi. The university is financially dependent on UGC funds in addition to the fees paid by the students. At present, the University spans five districts of Jharkhand, namely, Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega and Lohardaga. Right since its inception Ranchi University has been alive to the ever increasing demands of higher education.although there remains a lot of scope for improving the standards of education at the university. Keeping apace with changing times, the University today offers vocational courses. For the less privileged students coming from the scheduled tribes or scheduled castes, special coaching classes are engaged to prepare them for competitive examinations. The syllabi for mainstream courses in science, humanities and commerce too have been upgraded to meet the requirements of University Grants Commission . The current acting Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University is R. K. Pandey.

Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur is the most populous Urban Agglomeration in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Jamshedpur is the headquarters of the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. According to the 2011 census of India, Jamshedpur district has current population of 1,337,131; the Jamshedpur urban agglomeration , which includes the adjoining areas, Jamshedpur Urban Area is the third Largest city in Eastern India after Kolkata and Patna. It ranks 35th among the 53 million-plus cities in India. It is located on the Chota Nagpur plateau and is surrounded by the picturesque Dalma Hills. The city is bordered by the rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai on the north and west parts of the city. Jamshedpur was declared the seventh cleanest city of India for the year 2010 according to survey by the Government of India. It has been predicted as the 84th fastest growing city in the world for the timeframe 2006-2020 with average annual growth of 2.59%.

Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium

Astroturf Hockey Stadium or Ranchi Hockey Stadium is a field hockey stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. It serves as the home ground for Hockey India League franchise, Ranchi Rhinos. It is a well build stadium located in Morabadi,Ranchi,Jharkhand.It has a capacity of approx. 5000.This is also the home ground of HIL team Ranchi Rhinos.Initially built in 1990 then subsequently renovated .It is believed to be the newest and best stadium in India.It was inaugurated by then governor of Jharkhand K Sankaranarayanan as a prelude to the 34th National Games scheduled to be organized in Jharkhand from November 21, 2009. The stadium was constructed at a cost of around Rs 7 crore. It has a floodlight facility for day and night matches, a huge screen for live telecast of events and an electronic score board. The astro turf has been imported from Germany.

Basilica of the Divine Motherhood of Our Lady

The Basilica of the Divine Motherhood of Our Lady is a minor basilica in Ulhatu, near Ranchi in India. The decree designating it as a basilica was issued on 30 November 2004. In the Roman Catholic Church, the Virgin Mary is regarded not only as the Mother of God but also as the Mother of the Church. The origins of this church can be traced back to 1903, to a remote village called Kawali, where a village primary school was opened and placed under the care of a catechist. A village chapel was built at Kawali in 1907 and later shifted to Bhuthataur in 1948. A primary school functioned from here also and a priest attended the mass in this church. This was a time when Ulhatu still formed a part of the Ranchi Cathedral parish. In 1952 when Fr Defrijn laid the foundation of the church and school building, living in a hut. The church was formally established in the year 1953. Soon pilgrims started to arrive at Ulhatu. In this shrine the statue of Our Lady of Halle feeding the child Jesus is placed. There are several stories that are attached to the Mary in this parish. According to legend, when enemies attacked the city of Ranchi the locals sought her help. The statue of Our Lady received all the cannon balls of the enemies, becoming blackened but saving the city. This parish happens to be within the Horal Jungle Field Firing Range. Another story which talks of a student, Constant Lievens, who went on a pilgrimage to Mary in Halle and got a confirmation of his vocation to the Ranchi Missionary. When Lievens visited Kawali village in the year 1989, he saved the lives of people there, resulting in a movement towards the church. The story goes that Lievens was sick in Belgium and he yearned to return to the church in honor of Our Lady. Lievens died but his remains were sent to Ranchi in 1993, and his plan was implemented at Ulhatu where the shrine was blessed in 1995. The Ulhatu church has village chapels attached to it in Banpur, Barhibera, Jaratoli, Kawali, Kudagarha, Plandu, Serengtoli, and Sogod. Several convents are run by this church, including St Anne's Convent, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and educational institutions including St Joseph's High School, RC Middle School and Primary Schools, Convent School and St Anne's KG School and St Anne's Grihini School. There is also a St Anne's Dispensary that functions at Raja Ulhatu, Ranchi serving the less-privileged members of society.

Carmel Junior College

Carmel Junior College is a Catholic school in Jamshedpur, India, managed under the guidance of the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation The school was founded in the year of 1997. The Carmelite institution starts from Nursery and goes through till 12th. Carmel is a sister-school to Sacred Heart Convent School. Sister Flavian A.C. who laid the foundation stone and served as the first principal served as the head of Sacred Heart Convent School on and before 1998. The current principal is Sister M. Lini A.C. and is managed by Sister Eulaliya A.C. Sister Lini took charge as the principal on 15 June 2015 before which she served as the head of Carmel, Hazaribagh. She succeeded Sister M. Sylvie A.C. who took office on June 2010 from the former principal and founder Sr. Flavian A.C. and served for approximately five years. The school has approximately 2500 students.

Birla Institute of Technology

Birla Institute of Technology Mesra is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. It was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand, India by the philanthropist and industrialist Late Shri. B. M. Birla. The institute was later headed by Late Shri G.P Birla and the present chairman of the board of governors is Shri C.K Birla. The main campus at Mesra is a wholly residential campus. Following the establishment of the main campus in Mesra, extension centers have been established in several regions of India including Jaipur, Noida, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, and Deoghar as well as offshore centres in Ras al-Khaimah, UAE and Muscat, Oman. Every year students are admitted strictly on Merit Based assessed by all India rank(AIR) in JEE-Main-CSAB and AIPMT for its UG courses.
