Khajuraho

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madhya Pradesh, India. About 175 kilometres southeast of Jhansi, they are one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. The temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Most Khajuraho temples were built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty. Historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometers. Of these, only about 20 temples have survived, spread over 6 square kilometers. Of the various surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art. The Khajuraho group of temples were built together but were dedicated to two religions namely Hinduism and Jainism suggesting a tradition of acceptance and respect for diverse religious views among Hindus and Jains.

Bhopal

Bhopal is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Bhopal district and Bhopal division. The city was the capital of the former Bhopal State. Bhopal is known as the City of Lakes for its various natural as well as artificial lakes and is also one of the greenest cities in India. Bhopal is the 14th largest city in India and 131st largest city in the world, the city is located 190 km east of the financial capital and the largest city of the state, Indore. A Y-class city, Bhopal houses various institutions and installations of national importance, including ISRO's Master Control Facility and BHEL. Bhopal is home to several Institutes of National Importance in India, namely IISER, MANIT, SPA and AIIMS; as well as NLIU. The city attracted international attention in December 1984 after the Bhopal disaster, when a Union Carbide India Limited pesticide manufacturing plant leaked a mixture of deadly gases composed mainly of methyl isocyanate, leading to one of the worst industrial disasters in the world's history. The Bhopal disaster continues to be a part of the socio-political debate and a logistical challenge for the people of Bhopal.

Gwalior

Gwalior is a historic and major city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . It is 319 kilometres south of Delhi the capital city of India, Gwalior occupies a strategic location in the Gird region of India, and the city and its fortress has been ruled under several historic northern Indian kingdoms. From the Tomars in the 13th century, it was passed on to the Mughals, then to the Marathas followed by the Scindias in 18th century. Besides being the administrative headquarters of Gwalior district and Gwalior division, Gwalior has many administrative offices of Chambal Division of northern Madhya Pradesh. Several administrative and judicial organizations, commissions and boards have their state, as well as national, headquarters situated in the city. Gwalior was the winter capital of the state of Madhya Bharat which later became a part of the larger state of Madhya Pradesh. Before Indian Independence on 15 August 1947, Gwalior remained a princely state of the British Raj with Scindias as the local ruler. High rocky hills surround the city from all sides, on the north it just forms the border of the Ganga- Yamuna Drainage Basin. The city however is situated in the valley between the hills. Gwalior's metropolitan area includes Lashkar Gwalior , Morar Gwalior , Thatipur and the city center. Gwalior has made a rich contribution to the history of India. From the vedic ages to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the British Raj, it has emerged as a prominent place making it an important archaeological as well as a historic site. The rich heritage of art and culture, and especially the contribution of Gwalior to classical music is worth mentioning. Post independence, Gwalior has emerged as an important tourist attraction in central India as well as many industries and administrative offices came up within the city. Before the end of the 20th century it became a million plus agglomeration and now it is a metropolitan city in central India. Gwalior is surrounded by industrial and commercial zones of neighbouring districts on all three main directions. Gwalior is one of the largest cities of Central India and is often referred to as the tourist capital of Madhya Pradesh; the state being called as The Heart of Incredible India. A 2014 report of the World Health Organization found Gwalior to be the third-most air polluted city in the world. .

Indore

Indore is a tier 2 city, the largest city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh by population. It serves as the headquarters of both Indore District and Indore Division. A central power city, Indore exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment and has been described as the commercial capital of the state. Indore is the only city in India to house both the Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Management. Located on the southern edge of Malwa Plateau, the city is located 190 km west of the state capital of Bhopal. With a Census-estimated 2011 population of 3,276,697 distributed over a land area of just 3,898 square kilometer, Indore is the most densely populated major city in the central province. The Indore Metropolitan Area's population is the state's largest, with 3.2 million people living there. Indore traces its roots to its 16th century founding as a trading hub between the Deccan and Delhi. The city and its surroundings came under Maratha Empire on 18 May 1724 after Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I assumed the full control of Malwa. During the days of the British Raj, Indore State was a 19 Gun Salute princely state ruled by the Maratha Holkar dynasty, until they acceded to the Union of India. Indore served as the capital of the Madhya Bharat from 1950 until 1956. Indore's financial district, anchored by central Indore, functions as the financial capital of the Madhya Pradesh and is home to the Madhya Pradesh Stock Exchange, India's third oldest stock exchange. Indore's real estate market is among the most expensive in the Central India.

Ujjain

Ujjain listen (also known as Ujain, Ujjayini, Avanti, Avantika, Avantikapuri), is an ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River in the Malwa region of central India. The city is today part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, and it is the administrative centre of Ujjain District and Ujjain Division. The city is a place of pilgrimage for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and followers of Shakta. It was a capital of Avanti and, according to Hermann Kulke and Dietmar Rothermund, "was one of the earliest outposts in central India ... it showed traces of incipient urbanisation as early as about 700 BC."During the reign of Emperor Bindusara Maurya Ujjain was known as Ujjayini. Ujjayini and Bindusara's Empire were bitter enemies. In 303 BCE the ruler of Ujjayini Raja Shaktiraj attacked Bindusara's Empire but Bindusara managed to kill Shaktiraj. Bindusara crowned Shaktiraj's younger full-brother Jiraj as King. Jiraj ruled for fourteen years and was executed on the orders of Bindusara because Raja Jiraj had tried to assassinate Bindusara.

Bhedaghat

Bhedaghat is a town and a nagar panchayat in Jabalpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is situated by the side of river Narmada and is approximately 20 km from Jabalpur city. Its most famous sights are the Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks, and the Chaunsath Yogini temple The temple is one of the four major extant temples containing carvings of sixty four yogini, female yoga mystics. It was built in the 10th century under the Kalachuri empire. It commands a view of the whole area around and of the river flowing through the marble rocks. Its major attraction is a waterfall known as Dhuandhar, which looks like smoke coming out of the river and therefore it got its name as "Dhuan(smoke)-dhar(flow of water)". Another major attraction which needs mention is 'Bandar Kodini', when one travels in between the marble rocks in a boat, the mountains at both the sides at one point come so close that the monkeys are able to jump across them, hence the name "Bandar Kodini". In a moonlit night, the travel between the marble rock mountains in a boat on the river Narmada is a heavenly site which should not be missed for anything.

Bawangaja

Bawangaja is a famous Jain pilgrim center in the Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh in India. Its main attraction is the worlds tallest statue, of Adinatha, the first Jain Tirthankara. The statue is 84 feet high, and was created early in the 12th century. The statue is supported from the back unlike one at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka, India. The center is located in the Satpura ranges and is 8 km from a Barwani town. The mountains of Satpura had been the favorite place of great ascetics and preceptors for practicing penance. The land of Bawangaja had been the land of penance for several great religious dignities. In the middle of the Satpura, at the height of 4,000.6 ft . is the idol of the founder of Jainism the first Tirthankar Rishabh Dev, carved on single stone, with height of 25.6 metres. . This place is known as Bawangaja. The idol here is the highest in the world and rich in art. For hundreds of years this captivating idol, standing in the posture of meditation, exhibits the heights of detachment, quietness, art and expressions. The huge magnificent tallest idol of India at Chulgiri Siddha Kshetra is made by carving live rock. This 84 feet high Khadgasan idol of Bhagwan Adinath is made in brown stone. As no written evidence is available regarding its construction it is very difficult to say anything about its construction period. The idol of Bhagwan Adinath stands on base of mountain just like the idol of ‘Gomteshwar Bahubali’ of Shravanbelgola. The hands of idol are not joined with legs but are made separate. The structural art style of this idol is unique and it is in perfect proportion. The various parts of idol are quite symmetrical. There is balanced image of all emotions like joy, mercy separation on the face of this idol. On the left side huge idol of Bawangaja Bhagwan Adinath the 4 armed ‘Gomukh Yaksha’ on the right side the very artistic idol of 16 armed ‘Yakshi Chakreshvary’ is established. Because of the large size of idol one can not got complete view of idol by standing on feet of this idol. Therefore in order to get complete view one has to stand a little distance away from the idol. The idol of Bhagwan aadinathji carved artistically on a stone slab present here is also quite worth seeing. The Chulgiri temple is also situated on the Hilltop this temple is also called as Siddha Bhoomi. The Indrajeet, Kumbhakaran various other scholars attained emancipation through the self-meditation. This is ancient spired temple whose construction restoration according to inscription was done in Samvat 1116, 1223 1508. The 3 ancient foot images of Indrajeet, Kumbhakaran the other are present in this temple. Except foot images the 2 idols of Bhagwan Mallinath Chandraprabhu are installed in the main altar. Moreover the several idols are installed on both sides in the main assembly hall .

Udayagiri Caves

The Udayagiri Caves are an early Hindu ritual site located near Vidisha in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Northern India. They were extensively carved and reworked under the command of Chandragupta II, Emperor of the Gupta Empire, in the late 4th and 5th century CE. One of Indias most important archaeological sites from the Gupta period, it is currently a tourist site under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India. Udayagiri consists of a substantial U-shaped plateau immediately next to the River Bes. Located a short distance from the earthen ramparts of ancient Besnagar, Udayagiri is about 4 km from the modern town of Vidisha and about 13 km from the Buddhist site of Sanchi. Udayagiri is best known for a series of rock-cut sanctuaries and images excavated into hillside in the early years of the fifth century CE. The most artistic sculpture is the monumental figure of Viṣṇu in his incarnation as the boar-headed Varaha. The site has important inscriptions of the Gupta dynasty belonging to the reigns of Chandragupta II and Kumaragupta I . In addition to these remains, Udayagiri has a series of rock-shelters and petroglyphs, ruined buildings, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications and habitation mounds, all of which have been only partially investigated. There are a number of places in India with the same name, the most notable being the mountain called Udayagiri at Rajgir in Bihar and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves in Odisha.

Bagh Caves

The Bagh Caves are a group of nine rock-cut monuments, situated among the southern slopes of the Vindhyas in Bagh town of Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh state in central India. These monuments are located at a distance of 97 km from Dhar town. These are renowned for mural paintings by master painters of ancient India. The use of the word "cave" is a bit of a misnomer, since these are not natural, but instead examples of Indian rock-cut architecture. The Bagh caves, like those at Ajanta, were excavated by master craftmen on perpendicular sandstone rock face of a hill on the far bank of a seasonal stream, the Baghani. Buddhist in inspiration, of the nine caves, only five have survived. All of them are viharas or monasteries having quadrangular plan. A small chamber, usually at the back, forms the chaitya, the prayer hall. Most significant of these five extant caves is the Cave 4, commonly known as the Rang Mahal . These caves were dug out by Savannah.

Jai Vilas Mahal

The Jai Vilas Mahal , also known as the Jai Vilas Palace), is a nineteenth-century palace in Gwalior, India. It was established in 1874 by Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior and is still the residence of his descendants the former royal Maratha Scindia dynasty. Raja Jiwaji was fond of various furnitures and so he bought many various kinds of furniture and accessories for decorating the palace, from different places like Italy, England, New York, Egypt, Japan, China and much more. His great grandson was Madhav 1. He had two spouses and has been a member of the Lok Sabha of the Indian parliament 9 times. He was also a great golf and cricket player. He has studied from some college in Oxford, UK. He died in 2001 due to an accident. He has two children: one daughter and one son. They are now the living people of the dynasty. The European architecture of the palace was designed and built by Sir Michael Filose under the guidance of Jayajirao to welcome Edward VII. The palace has 400 rooms from which exclusively 40 rooms constitute the Jiwaji Rao Scindia Museum. Two Belgian chandeliers at the Durbar Hall weighing 7 tonnes each are believed to be some of the largest in the world. Priyadarshini Raje Scindia is the patron and trustee of the museum.

Datia Palace

Datia Palace, also known as Bir Singh Palace or Bir Singh Dev Palace is situated nearly 75 km from Gwalior City in Madhya pradesh. The specialty of this palace is that it is of 7 floor. However neither member from the royal family did ever lived here. The founder of the Datia State in Bundelkhand - Maharaj Birsingh Deo Build many such 52 monuments all around the Country India. Datia's Palace or the Satkhanda Palace is also called Datia Mahal, as well as the Purana Mahal or the "Old palace", Historian Abdul Hamid Lahori came to this city with Shahan Jahan on 19 November 1635. He said that the palace was nearly 80 meters long and was also this much broad. He said this as a very beautiful and strong palace. This Palace was made by spending 35 Lakh Rupees (78 thousand us dollars) and it took nine years to build it. It is situated on an isolated rock on the western side of the city Datia. It represents Mughal architecture along with Rajput architecture. It is the biggest and most famous of all the 52 palaces build by Raja birsingh Deo and it can be seen easily from a long distance.
