Jeddah Tower

Jeddah Tower, previously known as Kingdom Tower and Mile-High Tower, is a skyscraper under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at a preliminary cost of SR4.6 billion . It will be the centrepiece and first phase of a SR75 billion proposed development known as Jeddah Economic City that will be located along the Red Sea on the north side of Jeddah. If completed as planned, the Jeddah Tower will reach unprecedented heights, becoming the tallest building in the world, as well as the first structure to reach the one-kilometre-high mark. high, the geology of the area proved unsuitable for a tower of that height.) Reception of the proposal has been highly polarized; it has received high praise from some as a culturally significant icon that will symbolize the nation's wealth and power, while others question its socioeconomic motives, and forecast that it will have negative financial consequences.

Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium

Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium (Arabic: استاد الأمير عبدالله الفيصل‎‎) is a stadium in the port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The stadium is located in the south east of Jeddah, between King Abdulaziz University and the industrial city (Al Waziriah District). It is bound in the east by the Jeddah-Makkah expressway and in the south, Stadium street. The stadium was constructed in 1970, and has a capacity of around 23,000 spectators, and is part of a municipal sports complex that includes an indoor arena and an aquatics center. The stadium consists of two main stands. The covered west stand, is fully seated and has an enclosed VIP box and media suites in a central tribune. The arch shaped east stand is terraced, and curves along the running track. A single large scoreboard is located on the northern edge of the east stand. It is only now that the whole stadium will be seated. The exercise will reduce the capacity to 20,000 spectators and it is projected that it would be done by the end of year 2009.

Al-Balad

Al-Balad is the historical area of Jeddah, the second largest city of Saudi Arabia. Balad can literally be translated as "The City." Balad is the historic center of the City of Jeddah. Al-Balad was founded in the 7th century and historically served as the centre of Jeddah. Al-Balad's defensive walls were torn down in the 1940s. In the 1970s and 1980s, when Jeddah began to become wealthier due to the oil boom, many Jeddawis moved north, away from Al-Balad, as it reminded them of less prosperous times. Al-Balad had insufficient parking space for large cars. Its stores did not sell expensive designer clothing. Poor immigrants moved in place of the Saudi population. The municipality of Jeddah began historical preservation efforts in the 1970s. In 1991 the Municipality of Jeddah founded the Jeddah Historical Preservation Society to preserve the historical architecture and culture of Al-Balad. In 2002 $4 million United States dollars were earmarked for the preservation society.In 2009 Al-Balad was nominated by Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities to be listed in UNESCO's World Heritage site and it was accepted on 2014. In order to preserve the old structures within the Balad, the Historical Area Preservation Department was established in 1990, hoping also to help promoting cultural tourism in the country. Many Jeddawis have moved away from Al-Balad by 2007; the streets of Balad were still packed with people during the month of Ramadan. Around that year the Jeddah Urban Development Company was formed to restore Al-Balad.

King Abdullah Sports City

King Abdullah Sports City , also nicknamed The Shining Jewel, in Arabic or simply The Jewel, in Arabic , is a new multi-use stadium and sports city located 60 kilometers north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The City was named after Abdullah, King of Saudi Arabia when the stadium opened. The main stadium (King Abdullah International Stadium) is used for football, reaching a full capacity of 62,241 spectators. It is the biggest stadium in Jeddah, and the second biggest in Saudi Arabia, coming after Riyadh's King Fahd Stadium. Additionally, it is the 10th biggest stadium in the Arab world. Accompanying the innovative stadium are smaller sports venues surrounding the main stadium. It also hosts athletics and indoor sporting events in indoor arenas. The bid for the construction was won by Saudi Aramco and the contractor for this project was a joint between Al Muhaidib Contracting Company & BESIX Construct. The contract for providing the stadium safety, security, traffic management and contingency plans was awarded to a UK Company, Crowd Management UK Limited who are also the lead security and traffic management consultants for The R&A who host The Open Championship annually. In addition to the written plans Crowd Management UK delivered a training course for key stadium operators at the Saudi Aramco training facility in Jeddah KSA. The company also provided an independent evaluation of the performance of local staff and the event safety officer (provided by Sword Security) during the inaugural event at the KASC stadium. This led to a significant number of safety and security recommendations and the appointment of a dedicated Stadium Manager.

2009 Jeddah floods

The 2009 Saudi Arabian floods affected Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, and other areas of Makkah Province. They have been described by civil defence officials as the worst in 27 years. As of 3 January 2010, some 122 people are reported to have been killed, and more than 350 were missing. Some roads were under a metre of water on 26 November, and many of the victims were believed to have drowned in their cars. At least 3,000 vehicles were swept away or damaged. The death toll was expected to rise as flood waters receded, allowing rescuers to reach stranded vehicles. More than 90 millimetres of rain fell in Jeddah in just four hours on Wednesday 25 November. This is nearly twice the average for an entire year and the heaviest rainfall in Saudi Arabia in a decade. The flooding came just two days before the expected date of the Eid al-Adha festival and during the annual Hajj pilgrimage to nearby Mecca. Business losses were estimated at a billion riyals . The poorer neighbourhoods in the south of Jeddah were particularly hard hit, as was the area around King Abdulaziz University. The university was closed for vacation at the time of the floods, preventing even higher casualties.

King Road Tower

King Road Tower is a 34-storey office tower that is located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The tower contains the world largest advertisement LED screen making it a valued landmark for the city. King’s Road Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The screen measures almost 10,000 sq m and was designed, built and installed by French company Citiled, a world leader in tailor-made “Media Façade” projects for integration into architecture. This achievement places Jeddah firmly in the forefront of large-scale architectural innovation and gives a dynamic image to this city resolutely rooted in the future. Citiled was the company chosen by the project initiators to take up the technological challenge of this unprecedented project, in view of their expertise and their prestigious past achievements (e.g. the Agbar Tower designed by architect Jean Nouvel in Barcelona, the Hermes Building in Singapore, the Cocor luxury shopping centre in Bucarest, etc.). 21 floors on the north and south façades and 16 floors on the west façade have been equipped with LED screens developed by Citiled, i.e. a total of 9,850 sq m and more than 5 million LEDs, making this structure the largest Media Façade in the world installed on an inhabited building. It took more than 6 months to produce the 10,000 sq metres of this media façade, occupying a team of around twenty engineers and craftsmen for 3 months during the project design phase and then 6 months for installation and testing. Citiled uses patented technological innovations and was able to develop and implement systems that are almost transparent when mounted on the façades, guaranteeing daylight for the building’s occupants and preserving visibility. This achievement demonstrates how the city will look in the future, a future where buildings will be interactive with controlled energy consumption. Buildings will become theatrical stages bringing together an interactive community around them and the content they display. .

Lamar Tower 2

Lamar Towers are a pair of skyscrapers currently under construction in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Located on Jeddah Corniche, Tower 1 will be 321.6 m tall with 72 floors above ground, and Tower 2 will be 292.66 m tall with 62 floors above ground. The proposal for the project was submitted by Cayan in 2008 and was approved in the same year. Construction began in 2008 and, when completed in 2016, Tower 1 will be the tallest building in Jeddah, till date, surpassing the recently completed National Commercial Bank. The development is expected to cost about $600 million. The tower was designed by Saudi Diyar Consultants. The Construction Management Service is by MIDRAR. The Lamar company is the main developer of the project and Drake & Scull Construction are the main contractors for this landmark development. Lamar means liquid gold in Arabic, which describes the reflection of the golden glass in the waters of the Red Sea.

Durat Al Arus

Durrat Al-Arus is an integrated tourist village built in 1996 around 40 kilometers north of Jeddah center in the very old village "Dahaban", which is now a part of the Jeddah city. It includes schools, commercial centers, coffee shops, shisha cafés, hotels, resorts, a golf club, an equestrian club, an aqua park, theme parks, recreation parks and a yacht marina. The tourist village overlooks to the sea, with American construction styles for villas, apartments and the resorts, plus the high privacy of each residential unit. It is equipped with independent electric power and water plants, telephone and mobile networks, satellite TV channels, private security guard, and a small hospital. Durrat Al-Arus is considered a very liberal and open-minded village that is far away from Saudi Arabian traditions. Although Durrat Al-Arus is still operated by the same company as during the start in 1996, a lot of the facilities are closed down, abandoned or sold to private investors. The Equestrian is closed, the golf course is abandoned including surrounding houses which are devastated nowadays. The Aqua Park has closes down as well, there is only one hotel left, no schools anymore available and most of the houses and villas are sold to private investors who rent them ouy during holidays and weekends to Saudi families or Saudi groups. The Marina is open and in the weekends very busy with night parties, music and restaurants. Commercial centres are limited to one supermarket and all sport clubs are closed down. Durrat Al-Arus is in 2014 awaiting revilatlisation on a large scale, awaiting huge investments and a renewed future plan.
