Tardeo

Tardeo or Tardeo Road is a residential and commercial locality of South Mumbai, from Nana Chowk to Haji Ali Junction. Tardeo Road is an important arterial road of the city of Mumbai. The road is now renamed as Javji Dadaji Road from Nana Chowk to Tardeo Circle with post code 400007 and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Road from Tardeo Circle to Haji Ali with post code 400034. Post codes 400007 are served by Grant Road post office and 400034 are served by Tulsiwadi post office. It lies 23 km from the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport. It is connected by railway through the Mumbai Central railway station as well as by buses operated by BEST, MSRTC, and NMMT. Tardeo houses the Regional Transport Office of Mumbai city. It also has important commercial offices located in the AC Market Building and the Film Centre Building both on the Tardeo Road. In 1999, Tardeo and the city of Mumbai witnessed the opening of its first full-fledged shopping mall Crossroads, converted from an old pharmaceutical plant belonging to 'Roche'. The mall was an instant success and it attracted loads of people from all corners of the city, adding further strain on traffic and pollution and a worsening parking crisis. More and more land is acquired in this part of the city to turn old mills and dilapidated structures into swanky new residential towers. The Imperial Towers are a pair of residential towers in Tardeo that are the tallest complete buildings in India.

Marine Lines

Marine Lines is a locality in South Mumbai. The name Marine Lines is derived from the Marine Battalion Lines, a military establishment built by the British in the 19th century. The battalion was later converted to an air force residential quarters, and now lies just south of Metro Adlabs. It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Railway railway line. Marine Lines was also the name of the road on which Bombay Hospital and Liberty Cinema stand. It is now known as V Thackersey Marg. Marine Drive is the famous promenade near the station. Marine Drive has one of the finest Art Deco Residential Buildings facing the sea. Near the station there is a Muslim cemetery and a municipal crematorium; Chandanwadi. Adjoining the station is the famous Marine Drive flyover; the only link to Marine Drive over the tracks from Princess Street beginning to end. New Marine Lines is the area just south of the station near Churchgate. It is home to a number of offices including the UTI, R.O.C. , Customs (Marine and Preventive Wing), Income Tax office and various other Governmental agencies.

Hutatma Chowk

Hutatma Chowk is the official name of a square in South Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The square hosts Flora Fountain and was known by that name until 1960. It was officially renamed in 1960 in memory of the members of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, who lost their lives when police fired upon their peaceful demonstration. A statue of a "Martyr with a Flame" stands next to Flora Fountain.

Prabhadevi

Prabhadevi is a small up-scale southern neighbourhood of Mumbai, situated between the Shivaji Park Residential Zone to the north and Worli to the south and the Arabian Sea to the west. It is a thriving residential district with high-rise buildings built in recent years such as Beaumonde, Sumer Trinity Towers, and Inder Tower, Silver Dunes, Anand Chaya and Star Apartments. One of the major landmark is the Siddhivinayak Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, which attracts hundreds of devotees everyday, Tuesday being the main day of prayer. Prabhadevi BMC School is also located here, and the Kandewadi children's Crematorium is near the seafront. Prabhanagar is a cosy warm group of residences one of the early settlements in Prabhadevi. Patel Mansion is also one of the oldest chawl in Prabhadevi located at Khedgally.

Worli is a locality in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Historic spellings include Warli, Worlee, Varli.

Sion

Sion is the last locality within the City limits of Mumbai. The Marathi name for Sion is Sheev which means boundary or limit. In the 17th century the village formed the boundary between Mumbai and Salsette Island. Its surrounded by Kurla, GTB nagar and Dharavi. One of the local historical places in Sion is a hilltop garden commonly known as Sion Fort or Sion Killa in native language Marathi.

The Imperial 3

The Imperial 3 is an approved 400 metres 116 floors Supertall residential skyscraper in Mumbai, India. The towers are located in Tardeo, South Mumbai. Construction will start from 2014 and the towers will inaugurated in 2017. Imperial Tower 3, designed by the Chicago-based architect firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is their most recognizable project to date.It would be constructed by Shapoorji Pallonji and J+W Consultants and CBM Engineers will act as its structural engineer. It will stand near to its existing Sister tower The Imperial Towers which were designed by Hafeez Contractor. The Imperial 3 would be one of Indias first supertall skyscrapers to achieve a LEED Platinum rating for environmental sustainability from Green Building Council.

India Tower

India Tower is a 126-storey, 718-metre supertall skyscraper that began construction in the city of Mumbai, India, in 2010. The tower was originally planned for completion in 2016, but construction work was put on hold in 2011 due to a dispute between the towers developers and Mumbais civic authorities.

Mumbai Television Tower

The Mumbai Television Tower is the television tower owned by Doordarshan, the state-broadcaster located in the city of Mumbai in India. It stands at 300 m and is the fourth tallest man-made structure in the Indian subcontinent. The red and white tower is an open latticework structure. The tower, located at Worli can be seen from most parts of South Mumbai.

Agripada

Agripada is an area in South Mumbai. It is located between Byculla and Mumbai Central . This area is connected with the Central Railway as well as the Western Railway. Agripada is also notable for its YMCA which has a swimming pool and various indoor and outdoor sports facilities. A large number of schools, including municipal schools, convents, Marathi, Urdu and English medium schools are located in this area. Maratha Mandir is the nearest cinema hall. The other surrounding areas are Mumbai Central, Byculla, Nagpada, Madanpura and Mahalaxmi. Agripada also has a large number of mosques, of which Arab Masjid and Al-Madina Masjid are the most famous.

Mazagaon

Mazagaon, also spelled Mazgaon and Mazagon (Portuguese rule Mazagão), and pronounced by the Catholics as 'Mazgon' or 'Maz-a-gon' and the Marathi-speakers as Mazhgav. It is one of the seven islands of Mumbai. It is part of South Mumbai and can be reached by Byculla Station on the Central railway line and Dockyard Road Station on the Harbour Railway line. Located in Mazagaon are maritime companies like the Bombay Port Trust and Mazagaon Dock Ltd., the Mazagaon Court and Anglo-Indian schools including Rosary High School, St. Peters School, Antonio D'Souza High School and St. Mary's School.

World One

World One is a supertall residential skyscraper under construction in Mumbai, India. It is located in Upper Worli within Mumbai on the 7.1-hectare defunct Shrinivas Mill site. The project will cost ₹20 billion and is expected to be completed in 2016, becoming the world’s tallest residential tower. World Ones architect is Pei Cobb Freed Partners and the structural engineer is Leslie E. Robertson Associates. Apartment prices in World One start from ₹75 million with the most expensive being as much as ₹500 million, while Lodha Group anticipates total revenue of ₹50 billion from the sale of these apartments. Palais Royale

Palais Royale is a skyscraper located on the land previously owned by Shree Ram Mills Ltd. in Lower Parel, Mumbai. It is the first supertall in India to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum rating for environmental sustainability. The name, obviously French, is mispelled as Palais, French for palace, is masculine and therefore Royal should be spelled without the final E.

DB Crown

DB Crown is a skyscraper under construction and located in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. It is a 3-tower development covering 2.8 hectares of land and 1.4 hectares of elevated podium gardens. It is slated to be one of the taller towers in the city with height clearance from the Airport Authority of India. The construction of the property began in 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

Byculla

Byculla is a neighbourhood in South Mumbai. It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central Railway line.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link

The Bandra–Worli Sea Link, officially called Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. The bridge is a part of the proposed Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to Nariman Point in Mumbai's main business district. The ₹16 billion bridge was commissioned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation , and built by the Hindustan Construction Company. The first four of the eight lanes of the bridge were opened to the public on 30 June 2009. All eight lanes were opened on 24 March 2010. The sea-link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from 60–90 minutes to 20–30 minutes. As of October 2009, BWSL had an average daily traffic of around 37,500 vehicles. The sunrise & sunset views attract many photo enthusiasts. Stopping on the Worli sea link for photography is banned by Govt of Maharashtra.

Taraporewala Aquarium

Taraporewala Aquarium, situated in the city of Mumbai, India. It is the countrys oldest and one of the citys main attractions. it hosts marine and freshwater fishes. The aquarium is located on the famous Marine Drive. It was re-opened after renovation on March 3, 2015. The renovated aquarium has a 12-feet long and 360 degree acrylic glass tunnel. Another attraction is the special pools, where children can touch fish which are harmless. The fish will be kept in large glass tanks, which will be lit with LED lights. 2,000 fish of over 400 species and has been renovated at a cost of Rs 22 crore. The exotic fish from overseas has been introduced at the new aquarium the number of new varieties of marine fish at 70. Helicopter,Arowana,Gruppen,yellow-striped tang, blue-spotted stingray, star, clown, hark, trigger, Grouper, Moorish idol, Azure Damsel, Blueline Demoiselle, Purple Firefish, Cloudy Damsel, Copperband Butterflyfish, Schooling Bannerfish, Raccoon Butterflyfish, White Tail Trigger, Clown Triggerfish and Blue Ribbon Eel. The 40 new varieties of freshwater fish would include Red Devil,Jaguar,Electric Blue Jack Dempsey,Frontosa and Catfish. These fishes will be housed in larger tanks than before with imported flexi glass for better visibility. It also has sharks, turtles, rays, moray eels, sea turtles, small starfish and stingrays. In the aquariums 16 sea water tanks and nine sweet water tanks, there are 31 types of fish, while 32 tropical tanks contains 54 kind of fishes. The tropical section of the aquarium already feature different ecosystems such as the “moss aquarium” for pregnant fishes, “plantation aquarium” that features imported varieties of water lilies and other aquatic plants and “island aquarium”.

Lodha Altamount

Lodha Altamount is a project of the Lodha Group and is situated at Altamount Road. This development is under Lodha Group’s Luxury Collection. Altamount road is ranked as the 10th most expensive street in the world. Lodha Group acquired the area from the US consulate for Rs 375 crore surpassing the bids made by Mahindra Lifespaces and TATA Housing. The previously existing Washington House, home to US Consul General was a three-storeyed building, covering an area of 2702 square meters. It falls under the Coastal Regulation Zone 2 and is listed as Grade 3 Property.

St. Thomas Cathedral

St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai, completed in 1718, is the first Anglican church in Mumbai, to improve the "moral standards" of the growing British settlement. It is located on Veer Nariman Road, close to Horniman Circle Gardens and the Flora Fountain. The name of nearby Churchgate station has reference to this church. One of the gates in the Fort which the East India Company had built to protect their settlement was the entrance to the St. Thomas Church. It was called Churchgate. That is why the whole area towards the West of the Church is called “Churchgate” even today. The street leading to the Church was originally called Churchgate Street and has been more recently renamed and is now known as Veer Nariman Road. The island of Bombay which was a Portuguese possession became a part of the dowry of the Portuguese princess Infanta Catherine of Braganza on her marriage to Charles II of England under the Anglo Portuguese treaty of June 1661. In 1668 King Charles transferred it to the East India Company for a loan of pounds Sterling 50,000 at 6% interest and with a rental of pounds Sterling 10 per annum! Gerald Aungier was placed in charge of the British East India Companys newly acquired factories at Surat and Bombay, which had until then belonged to Portugal. As Governor of Bombay from 1672—1677, Angier built a church, a hospital, a court of justice and other civic amenities on the English model, and fortified the Companys commercial establishment. The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1676, on Bombay Green, at the present site of the St. Thomas Cathedral, but over 40 years elapsed before construction could be completed. Richard Cobbe, the Chaplain, completed the construction of the building between 1715 and 1718. It was opened for divine service on Christmas Day 1718, and since then has served continuously as a church. The church was consecrated a cathedral in July 1837. The tower and the clock at the western end were added in 1838. About 25 years later a major renovation scheme was launched to enlarge the chancel. This was completed by 1865. Here, many a Briton were laid to rest under elaborate marble tablets engraved with touching elegies — generals and clerks and young maids all lying together in the silent, sundappled interior. Most of the tombstones bear eloquent messages. The cathedral was selected for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage conservation award 2004. Recently the congregation in St. Thomas Cathedral is being led by Rev. Avinash Rangayya.

Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Mumbai is a Hindu temple and a part of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. This Swaminarayan Temple is located in the Bhuleshwar area of Mumbai and is the oldest Swaminarayan Mandir in Mumbai, being over a hundred years old. The present Mandir has a tri spire structure and the Murtis installed are that of Laxminarayan Dev, Ghanshyam Maharaj, Hari Krishna Maharaj, Gaulokvihari and Radha. It is a Shikharband Mandir and comes under the Laxminarayan Dev Gadi . This temple is one of many in the Bhuleshwar area that led to the birth of Phool Galli in Bhuleshwar due to the high demand of flowers in these temples.

Gate of Mercy Synagogue

The Gate of Mercy Synagogue , Hebrew: שער הרחמים) (also known as Shaar Harahamim and Juni Masjid is the oldest synagogue in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. The synagogue was built in 1796 by Samaji Hasaji Divekar (also known as Samuel Ezekiel), a Bene Israeli, near Esplanade in South Mumbai. The synagogue was later rebuilt and moved to the present location at Mandvi in 1860. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the area was inhabited by a small but thriving Jewish community. The local appellation of the synagogue, Juni Masjid lends itself to the nearby Central railway station, Masjid Bunder. Despite a fall in numbers, the synagogue still maintains active services such as a 6AM service. It serves a congregation of about a hundred members daily. The synagogue is also featured on heritage and religious tours of the city.

Jijamata Udyaan

Jijamata Udyaan formerly called Ranichi Bagh after the original British name Victoria Gardens, and now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhonsle Udyan, is a zoo and garden located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. It was laid out in 1861 and is one of the oldest zoos in India. Also, situated in the Gardens is the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, mainly of industrial and agricultural interest. On the grounds to the east of the museum is the giant statue of an elephant, taken from the Elephanta Caves on Gharapuri to Britain in 1864, and later returned to these gardens.

INS Vikrant

INS Vikrant was a Majestic-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. She played a key role in enforcing the naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The ship was built under the name Hercules for the British Royal Navy during World War II, but construction was put on hold after the wars end, and she never entered British service. India purchased the incomplete carrier from the United Kingdom in 1957, and construction was completed in 1961. The Indian Navy sent Raghunath Mishra and a small crew to bring the ship to India. INS Vikrant was commissioned as the first aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. After years of distinguished service, she was decommissioned in January 1997. From 1997 to 2012, she was preserved as a museum ship in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, until it was closed in 2012 due to safety concerns. At the end of January 2014, Vikrant was sold through an online auction to a Darukhana ship-breaker, where she underwent preparations to be broken up. Although a public-interest litigation was filed and heard by the Supreme Court of India challenging Vikrant s sale and scrapping, on 14 August 2014, the Supreme Court rejected the PIL and cleared the way for the warship to be scrapped. Vikrant remained beached off Darukhana in Mumbai Port while awaiting the final clearances of the Mumbai Port Trust. On 12 November 2014, the Supreme Court gave its final approval for the carrier to be scrapped. The scrapping of Vikrant began on 22 November, and is intended to be completed by mid-2015.

Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is a monument built during the British Rule in Mumbai City of Maharashtra state in Western India . It is located on the waterfront in the Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai and overlooks the Arabian Sea. The structure is a basalt arch, 26 metres high. It lies at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg at the waters edge in Mumbai Harbour. It was a crude jetty used by the fishing community which was later renovated and used as a landing place for British governors and other prominent people. In earlier times, it would have been the first structure that visitors arriving by boat in Mumbai would have seen. The Gateway has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai, and is the citys top tourist attraction. The India Gate in New Delhi is similar to the Gateway of India in Mumbai. The structure was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, the foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The final design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The Gateway was later the ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. It served to allow entry and access to India. The monument has witnessed three terror attacks from the beginning of the 21st century; twice in 2003 and it was also the disembarkation point in 2008 when four gunmen attacked the Taj Mahal Palace Tower.

Mani Bhavan

Mani Bhavan, located at # 19, Laburnum Road in the Gamdevi precinct of downtown Mumbai, acted as the focal point of Gandhis political activities in Mumbai between 1917 and 1934. The mansion belonged to Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, Gandhis friend and host in Mumbai during this period.

Experimental Theatre

The Experimental Theatre is a 300-seat theatre at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, India. It was inaugurated in April 1986 as a black box theatre venue with modular seating and staging units. It stages innovative production designs and presentations, and is normally used to promote the exploration of new directions in performance art. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art stagecraft and engineering systems.

Mahalaxmi Racecourse

The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi neighbourhood, of Mumbai. The track is oval shaped with 2,400 metres straight chute, spread over approximately 225 acres of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats. Built in 1883 and modelled on the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, it is spread over land facing the sea. It was originally donated by Sir Cusrow N Wadia and today it is on lease from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to Royal Western India Turf Club which runs the racecourse. The Grandstand, off the course, is a designated heritage structure. The racecourse is the only helipad open for civilian use in South Mumbai.

Kamathipura

Kamathipura (also spelled Kamthipura) is Mumbai's oldest and Asia's second largest red-light district. It was first settled after 1795 with the construction of causeways that connected the erstwhile seven islands of Bombay. Initially known as Lal Bazaar, it got its name from the Kamathis (workers) of other areas of the country, who were labourers on construction sites. Due to tough police crackdown, in the late 1990s with the rise of AIDS and government's redevelopment policy that helped sex workers to move out of the profession and subsequently out of Kamathipura, the number of sex workers in the area has dwindled. In 1992, Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded there were 50,000 sex workers here which was reduced to 1,600 in 2009, with many sex worker migrating to other areas in Maharashtra and real estate developer taking over the high-priced real estate.
