Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel

The Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel run by the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts overlooking the Persian Gulf in the West Bay area of Doha, Qatar. Located approximately 2 miles northwest of the port area, it reportedly covers an area of around 10,000 square metres. The hotel reportedly cost around $100 million to build, and although built by an American company, it was subsidized by the Qatari government. Established in 1979, is noted for its distinct pyramid shape and is part of the conference facility for the Organization of Arab States. The Sheraton Doha has been described as having "a world of Arabian luxury and magical ambience". The hotel itself has a very important function as a conference centre in Doha and regularly hosts events including international scientific seminars and meetings. The First Conference for Expatriate Arab Scientists, QFIRST took place at the hotel in 2007 and it has hosted meetings of the World Trade Organization . The hotel reportedly has one auditorium which holds over 1000 people. The hotel has 371 rooms and 26 conference rooms. The hotel has nine restaurants.

Qatar National Library

Qatar National Library is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. The plans for the new national library were announced by Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation, on November 19, 2012, during a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dar Al Kutub library, in Doha, Qatar, the first public library in the Persian Gulf region (founded on December 29, 1962), which had until then been regarded as the Qatari national library. Claudia Lux, a German scholar and library professional, was appointed by the Qatar Foundation to be director of the library project in April 2012, and initially oversaw the launch of QNL as a digital library, while construction began on a new building in Education City, a district in Doha that was developed by the foundation as a center of higher education, and now includes branch campuses of six American universities, as well as other educational and research institutions. The parent institution, Qatar Foundation – a private, chartered, non-profit organization, founded in 1995 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, then emir of Qatar (now father emir) – aspires through its activities to "promot[e] a culture of excellence," to encourage "an innovative and open society in Qatar," and to support a transition "from a carbon-based economy to a knowledge-based economy." The new library is envisioned as playing an integral role in such a transition by providing the requisite educational resources to students, educators, researchers and the community at large; its mission is to "spread knowledge, nurture imagination, cultivate creativity, and preserve the nation’s heritage for future generations," or, in another formulation, to help in "bridging with knowledge Qatar’s and the Arab and Islamic world’s heritage and future." QNL aims to serve a three-fold function as a national library, a research-level university library, and a central metropolitan public library equipped for the digital age. In its capacity as a national library it collects and provides access to global knowledge, including heritage content and materials relevant to Qatar and the region; as a university and research library it supports education and research at all levels; and as a modern central public library it provides library services and resources to meet the reading interests and foster the information literacy of the general public, and, with the opening of the new building, will also serve as a community meeting place.

Dubai Towers Doha

Dubai Towers Doha is a super-tall skyscraper with a roof height of 400 m under construction in Doha, Qatar. The estimated cost of Dubai Towers Doha is 2.3 billion Qatari Riyal . When completed, the structure will be the tallest building in Qatar. Located in the West Bay district of Doha, next to the Doha Corniche, the 84-story multi-use tower is being developed by Sama Dubai, formerly known as Dubai International Properties, the international real estate investment and development arm of Dubai Holding. The project has been contracted to a joint venture between Al-Habtoor and Al Jaber, while Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall are the architects and engineering consultants. The cost consultants are Hanscomb Consultants Inc. The Project Management consultant is Sama ECH. When completed the mixed use tower will include a 7,000 m2 retail area, 13 floors comprising a 225-room five-star hotel, 29 floors of office space and 31 floors containing 226 luxury apartments and three super luxury penthouses. The project is now severely delayed as a result of the financial crash in Dubai. Investors in the property have been advised that the building is 9 months behind schedule. However, in May 2010 only 29 of the proposed 84 stories had been built. At normal building rates this would suggest at least a 3 year delay until final completion.

Doha Corniche

The Doha Corniche is a waterfront promenade extending for several kilometers along Doha Bay in the capital city of Doha, the state of Qatar. Running parallel to the Corniche is Corniche Street, a main thoroughfare which connects Doha's emerging West Bay business district with the south of the city and Doha International Airport. It was formed following extensive dredging work carried out during the late 1970s and early 1980s which reshaped Doha's coastline. The Corniche used to be an empty stretch of walkway in which the only visible edifice was a Sheraton Hotel, but development has increased in the 21st century with dozens of skyscrapers being built towards the north of the Corniche. The areas development is part of the economic boom the country has been experiencing and part of an effort promote tourism, which was facilitated by the 2006 Asian Games. Many of Doha's landmarks are found along the Corniche which begins near the Museum of Islamic Art, and ends at the Sheraton Park near the distinctive pyramid-shaped Sheraton Hotel. Al Rumaila Park is also nearby.

Doha Tower

Doha Tower, also known as Burj Doha and previously named as Burj Qatar and Doha High Rise Office Building, is an iconic high rise tower located in West Bay , Doha, Qatar. On October 18, 2012, the building received the CTBUH Skyscraper Award for the Best Tall Building Worldwide from the CTBUH. Doha Tower was designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel. In 2004 the project was first named as High Rise Office Building and after completion of construction in 2012 was branded as Burj Doha by the owner, H. E. Sheikh Saud bin Muhammed Al Thani. The public has noted the buildings "phallic form", suggestive of what Nouvel calls a “fully assumed virility.” Doha Tower comprises 46 floors above ground, 3 floors below ground and a total gross floor area of approximately 110,000 m². It has no central core, leaving more internal space available to its occupants. The design is unique, the first skyscraper with internal reinforced concrete dia-grid columns, which form a cross shape that connects with the eye-catching cylindrical facade. The design expresses the local culture, connecting the very modern with ancient Islamic designs . Islamic screens were designed to shade the building from high temperatures as well as the unpleasant sand residue found on glass throughout the region. The building is designed to hold offices for businesses wishing to operate in the diverse business district of West Bay . Doha Tower is owned by Sheikh Saud bin Muhammed Al Thani and managed by Hamad Bin Saoud Group (HBS)].

Commercialbank Plaza

Commercialbank Plaza is a 22-storey office building on the North Shore of Doha, Qatar, built as a new head office by the Commercial Bank of Qatar. The building was opened on May 13, 2009 by Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar. The building is 148m high and provides 120,000sqm of floor space. It is the ninth tallest building in Qatar. Commercialbank Plaza was designed by LOM architecture and design, an architectural practice based in London. The building is the first in the Middle East with a fully transparent glass facade, achieved with the use of a triple skin of glass and blinds which track the sun. Qatar University

Qatar University is a public university in Qatar, located on the northern outskirts of the capital Doha. As of 2014, there are over 16,000 students. Courses are taught in Arabic (in education, arts and social sciences courses) or English (in natural sciences, engineering and business courses). The university is the only government university in the country. The university hosts seven colleges – Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Sharia and Islamic Studies, and a College of Pharmacy – with a total of almost 8000 students at a 13:1 student-teacher ratio. Students entering the university are placed in a “Foundation Program”, which ensures the acquirement of skills such as math, English, and computer technology. Many of its academic departments have received or are currently under evaluation for accreditation from a number of organizations. In addition to undergraduate academics, QU has a research infrastructure including research labs, an ocean vessel, technical equipment and a library housing thousands of books, including a collection of rare manuscripts. The university serves on behalf of the government and private industry to conduct regional research, particularly in areas of the environment and energy technologies. Qatar University has a student body of fifty-two nationalities, 65% of which are Qatari nationals. About 35% are children of expats. Women make up approximately 70% of the student population, and are provided their own set of facilities and classrooms. QU has an alumni body of over 30,000 graduates.
