Ubud Monkey Forest

The Ubud Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Its official name is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, and its name as written on its welcome sign is the Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The Ubud Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month. The Monkey Forest lies within the village of Padangtegal, which owns it. The villages residents view the Monkey Forest as an important spiritual, economic, educational, and conservation center for the village.

Mount Agung

Mount Agung or Gunung Agung is a mountain in Bali, Indonesia. This stratovolcano is the highest point on the island. It dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate. The clouds come from the west and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green while the east dry and barren. The Balinese believe that Mount Agung is a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe. One legend holds that the mountain is a fragment of Meru brought to Bali by the first Hindus. The most important temple on Bali, Pura Besakih, is located high on the slopes of Gunung Agung. Gunung Agung last erupted in 1963-1964 and is still active, with a large and very deep crater which occasionally belches smoke and ash. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical, despite the existence of the large crater. From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the peak of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok, although both mountains are frequently covered in clouds.

Mount Batur

Mount Batur is an active volcano located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung, Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago The southeast wall of the inner caldera lies beneath Lake Batur; Batur cone has been constructed within the inner caldera to a height above the outer caldera rim. The Batur stratovolcano has produced vents over much of the inner caldera, but a NE-SW fissure system has localized the Batur I, II, and III craters along the summit ridge. Historical eruptions have been characterized by mild-to-moderate explosive activity sometimes accompanied by lava emission. Basaltic lava flows from both summit and flank vents have reached the caldera floor and the shores of Lake Batur in historical time. The caldera contains an active, 700-metre-tall stratovolcano rising above the surface of Lake Batur. The first historically documented eruption of Batur was in 1804, and it has been frequently active since then. The substantial lava field from the 1968 eruption is visible today when viewed from Kintamani, a town that stradles the southwest ridge of the greater caldera. The caldera is populated and includes the four main villages of Kedisan, Songan, Trunyan and Toya Bungkah. The locals largely rely on agriculture for income but tourism has become increasingly popular due to the relatively straightforward trek to the summit of the central crater. The lake, Danau Batur, is the largest crater lake on the island of Bali and is a good source of fish. On September 20, 2012 UNESCO has made Mount Batur Caldera a part of the Global Geopark Network.

Gianyar

Gianyar is a regency in the Indonesian province and island of Bali, Indonesia. It has an area of 368 km2 and population of 470,380, making it the second most densely populated district in Bali . Its regency seat is Gianyar. The civil registry survey of April 2011 listed 480,447 people, of which 469,929 were classified as Hindu. The town of Ubud, a centre of art and tourism, is located in Gianyar.

Kuta Selatan

South Kuta (Indonesian:Kecamatan Kuta Selatan) is a district within Badung Regency of Bali. It covers 101.13 km2 and home to 116,143 people as of 2010 Census, like other places in the regency, it has seen tremendous population growth, and basically covers Jimbaran and everything to the south (Bukit Peninsula). To the north is Kuta District, and the south is Indian Ocean. It contains six villages, namely Pecatu with Uluwatu in it, Ungasan, Kutuh, Benoa, Tanjung Benoa and upmarket Nusa Dua, and Jimbaran.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

Mandala Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or Garuda Wisnu Kencana, is a 240 hectares private cultural park on the Bukit Peninsula at the southern end of the island of Bali in Indonesia, 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Bukit is a limestone plateau with Uluwatu to the west and Nusa Dua to the east. It is devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu, and his mount, Garuda, the mythical bird who is his companion.

The falls are a popular tourist destination in Bali for the bridge walkway and cool water. The falls are located in Gitgit Village, Sukasada District, and about 10 kilometres from Singaraja Town, or about 70 kilometres from Denpasar.

Dreamland Beach

It is also renowned for its dangerous shorebreak. Dreamland Beach is the site of the failed Pecatu Graha development, planned by Tommy Suharto, the youngest son of the former president Suharto. As of 2008 this is an active building site with all the previous Warongs having been levelled for a hotel complex.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, or Pura Bratan, is a major Shivaite and water temple on Bali, Indonesia. The temple complex is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. Water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area; downstream there are many smaller water temples that are specific to each irrigation association . Built in 1663, this temple is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danu, due to the importance of Lake Bratan as a main source of irrigation in central Bali. The 11 stories of pelinggih meru dedicated for Shiva and his consort Parvathi. Buddha statue also present inside this temple. Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of this area. Located 1200 m above sea level, it has a cold tropical climate.

Puri Lukisan Museum

The Puri Lukisan Museum is the oldest art museum in Bali which specialize in modern traditional Balinese paintings and wood carvings. The museum is located in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. It is home to the finest collection of modern traditional Balinese painting and wood carving on the island, spanning from the pre-Independence war to the post-Independence war era. The collection includes important examples of all of the artistic styles in Bali including the Sanur, Batuan, Ubud, Young Artist and Keliki schools.

Bali–Java Powerline

The Bali–Java Powerline is a planned electric power transmission line in Indonesia. It will be used for the crossing of the Bali Strait between Java and Bali. If built, the towers will be the world's tallest electricity pylons with a height of 376 metres . The line on the Java side will begin in at the Paiton power plant, then through Watu Dodol in Banyuwangi Regency, and on to Bali. On the Bali side, it would be in parts of western Buleleng, Jembrana, Tabanan and Badung regencies. The two towers that will carry the line over the Bali Strait have planned positions as follows: 8°5′21.73″S 114°24′53.12″E for the 363-metre tower on Java and 8°5′58.55″S 114°26′12.52″E for the 376-metre tower on the Bali side.

West Bali National Park

West Bali National Park is located on the north western side of Bali, Indonesia. The park covers around 190 square kilometres, of which are 158 square kilometres land and the remainder is sea. This is approximately 5% of Balis total land area. To the north, it includes a 1,000-metre long beach, reef and islets. A seaport at Gilimanuk is west of the park, and the village of Goris is to the east. The National Park can be reached by roads from Gilimanuk and Singaraja, or by using ferries from Ketapang, East Java. There are several habitats in the national park, a savanna, mangroves, montane and mixed-monsoon forests, and coral islands. The center of the park is dominated by remnants of four volcanic mountains from Pleistocene era, with Gunung Patas at 1,412 metres its highest elevation.

Ubud

Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, it has developed a large tourism industry. Ubud has a population of about 30,000 people. Recently, it has become difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it. The area surrounding the town is made up of small farms, rice paddies, and dense forest.

Bali Botanic Garden

The Bali Botanic Garden is the largest botanic garden in Indonesia and is located in the mountainous region of Bedugul, central Bali, around 90 minutes drive north of Denpasar. The Garden was established on 15 July 1959 and is situated around 1300 metres above sea level overlooking Bratan Lake and the Ulun Danu Temple on the slopes of Tapak Hill. The Garden is a centre for botanical research, conservation, education and recreation. It is operated by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences . The Garden has an area of 157.5 hectares and daytime temperatures range from 17 - 25 °C and 10 - 15 °C at night. The humidity averages around 70-90%. The Garden contains more than 18,000 taxa of plants belonging to 2300 species, representing various species from mountainous areas of eastern Indonesia: Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua. In addition its herbarium contains 10,000 preserved plant specimens ranging from algae to flowering plants. Apart from plant collections, there is also a traditional Balinese style guesthouse that functions as a guest house for visitors.

Bali Bird Park, is a tourist attraction in Bali, Indonesia. It is located at the Gianyar Regency and has an area of 20,000 square metres . The Bird Park houses more than 5000 birds representing more than 200 species in an enclosed aviary.

Lovina Beach

Lovina Beach is a coastal area on the northwestern side of the island of Bali, Indonesia. The coastal strip stretches from 5 km west of the city of Singaraja to 15 km west. Singaraja is the seat of Buleleng Regency. The Lovina area contains the small villages of Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Anturan, Banyualit, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus. It is becoming more popular with tourists but remains far quieter than the tourist hotspots of the islands south side. The area takes its name from a home owned by Pandji Tisna, a Regent of Buleleng and pioneer of tourism to Bali in the early 1950s. Popular activities for visitors include early-morning boat trips off the coast to see dolphins.

Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi is an 11th-century temple and funerary complex in Tampaksiring north east of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia., that is spread across either side of the Pakerisan river. It comprises 10 rock-cut candi that are carved into some 7-metre-high sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face. These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. On the east side there are five temples that are dedicated, according to one theory, to King Udayana, his queen Mahendradatta, and their sons Airlanga, Anak Wungsu, and Marakata. The temples on the west side are dedicated, according to the same theory, to the kings minor queens or concubines. Inscription: on the north shrine a legible inscription reads: "Haji Lumahing Jalu," meaning "the king made a temple here."

Pura Besakih is a temple complex in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali, Indonesia. It is the most important, the largest and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali, and one of a series of Balinese temples. Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate but related temples with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope. The entrance is an formed by a Candi Bentar, and beyond it the Kori Agung is the gateway to the second courtyard.

Pura Penataran Sasih

Pura Penataran Sasih is a Hindu temple in Pejeng village, Bali. It was founded, according to a modern chronogram displayed at the entrance, in 1266 AD, and served as the state temple of the Pejeng Kingdom, 1293 1343 AD. Significant features of the temple include: A split-gate entrance. A modern chronogram in front of the entrance. A collection of 10th-12th century Hindu sculptures that were brought here from other parts of the island. A very tall, stone Seat of Ganesh in the middle of the main courtyard. The celebrated Moon of Pejeng, a very early and revered colossal bronze drum.

Pura Taman Ayun

The temple compound consists of a petirtaan or bathing structure, famous for its holy spring water, where Balinese Hindus go to for ritual purification. The temple pond has a spring which gives out fresh water regularly, which Balinese Hindus consider to be holy or amritha. Tirta Empul means Holy Spring in Balinese.

Battle of Surabaya

The Battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militia against British and British Indian troops as a part of the Indonesian National Revolution. The peak of the battle was in November 1945. The battle was the heaviest single battle of the revolution and became a national symbol of Indonesian resistance. Considered a heroic effort by Indonesians, the battle helped galvanise Indonesian and international support for Indonesian independence. 10 November is celebrated annually as Heroes' Day . By the time the Allied forces arrived at the end of October 1945, the pemuda foothold in Surabaya City was described as "a strong unified fortress". Ferocious fighting erupted on 30 October when 600 Indian troops perished alongside the British commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby. The British retaliated with a punitive sweep that began on 10 November, under the cover of air attacks. Although the European forces largely captured the city in three days, the poorly armed Republicans fought for three weeks, and thousands died as the population fled to the countryside. Despite the military defeat suffered by the Republicans and a loss of manpower and weaponry that would severely hamper Republican forces for the rest of the revolution, the battle and defence mounted by the Indonesians galvanised the nation in support of independence and helped garner international attention. For the Dutch, it removed any doubt that the Republic was not simply a gang of collaborators without popular support. It also had the effect of convincing Britain that wisdom lay on the side of neutrality in the revolution; within a few years, in fact, Britain would support the Republican cause in the United Nations.

Sanur

Sanur (Indonesian:Pantai Sanur, pronounced sah-noor) is a coastal stretch of beach of Denpasar city of southeast Bali, about 30 minutes drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, which has grown into a little town in its own right. A 5.1 kilometer area of Sanur's coastline, from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari Beach, was reclaimed in 2008. In 1906 the northern part of Sanur beach was used as the landing site for the Dutch invasion troops during the intervention in Bali. During World War II, Sanur was again the entry point through which the Japanese forces landed to occupy the island of Bali. Traditional fishing boats can be seen on the beach of Sanur offering a scenic view of the island Nusa Penida. Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpes (1880-1958), a Belgian painter, lived in Sanur from 1932 - 1958. His house was transformed into a museum, Museum Le Mayeur, where about 80 of his most important paintings are exhibited. Bali Orchid Garden, a park about 3 km north of Sanur is worth a visit as well. Another interesting sight can be visited in the south of Sanur in Jalan Danau Poso Street beside Pura Blanjong, a small Hindu temple. A stone column measuring 1.77 metres can be seen under a roof at the end of a small and short blind alley. This is the oldest object produced by men on Bali. The column bears inscriptions dating from the 9th century written in Sanskrit and in a very old form of Balinese. Various objects made of stone possibly dating from the same period are exhibited as well.

Klungkung

Klungkung is the smallest regency of Bali, Indonesia. It has an area of 315 km2 and population of approximately 180,000 . Its regency seat is Semarapura. Klungkung town is easily reached from Gianyar via the highway. The regency is famous for its classic Balinese paintings which mostly depict the story of the epics like Mahabharata or Ramayana. These classical style paintings come from the frescoes of the Balinese Palaces, and can also be found at Klungkung Palace in the downtown area. Semarajaya Museum is also located in the area. Some 60% of the land area of Klungkung is made of the three offshore islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan, which together form Nusa Penida District.
