Top Attractions in St. Helens

North West Museum of Road Transport

The North West Museum of Road Transport is located at the old St. Helens Corporation Transport bus depot in Hall Street, St Helens, Merseyside, England. The collection of vehicles at the museum includes many examples of buses from local municipal bus companies, including St Helens, Liverpool, Southport, Widnes, Warrington and Chester, as well as vehicles from the former Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive. Whilst the majority of vehicles on display are buses, there are also classic cars, trucks and fire engines. A substantial new attraction, The Museum of Fare Collection commenced during 2009 and shows a worldwide collection of over 1050 ticket machines dating from as early as 1886. Visitors are invited to try these out under supervision. A new Lecture Theatre and Events Venue opened in 2010 with specialist subject lecturers. A Visiting Speaker service is available. Free rides on vintage buses usually operate on 1st Sunday in month. Reopened in September 2006 after a £1 million restoration of the old tram, trolleybus, and bus depot, which dates back to 1881, at which time it included stables for horse-drawn trams. The museum is open every weekend, and has attracted over 30,000 visitors since its reopening.

Crank Caverns

Crank Caverns is the common name of the remains of the Rainford Delph Quarry near Crank in St. Helens, Merseyside. It is a network of underground tunnels and caverns, as well as an extensive woodland. Information in the St. Helens local history archives states that sandstone quarrying began here as early as 1730. As the quarry expanded, the cost of purchasing land to open cast mine it increased, so it was decided to opt for a different method. Instead of quarrying out the stone, they would mine it out, following a seam of stone until it ran out. This resulted in the network of caves, tunnels and shafts we see today. Rainford Delph is listed as a Colliery by 1854, under the ownership of Charles Howarth or Yorkshire Charlie as he was known locally by 1880. Mining finally ceased and the woods and caverns were used as a game reserve by the Earl of Derby until 1939, when they became a storage facility for ammunition for the anti-aircraft position at Crank. After the war, the caverns ceased use as a game reserve. Today, Crank Caverns are not officially open to the publicand due to their increasing instability, attempts have been made to close access to the caverns and tunnels themselves. Despite this, the site is still physically accessible from a nearby public footpath and is still a draw for generations of curious locals who wish to explore, many having heard the numerous local myths and legends from an early age.

Billinge Hill

Billinge Hill, also known as Billinge Lump, is the highest point in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in North West England. It is also the highest point of Merseyside . It lies in Billinge, within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire. It is one of the 176 hills graded as a Marilyn in England. A beacon tower is at the summit. Built as a summerhouse to Winstanley Hall in the 18th century, it was used for the Year 2000 celebrations. Most fireworks displays for miles around can be seen from the summit and people often gather there in small numbers to watch displays over the towns of Wigan and St Helens and the local village of Rainford. Over the years it has been covered in graffiti which was recently cleaned off and the metal panels restricting access to the inside of the beacon have been painted black. Nearby to the north-west are several large transmitter masts which take advantage of the height and relative isolation of the land. The views are fairly extensive, notably to the south-west where, when clear, the mountains of Snowdonia, in Wales, can be seen and to the north-east Winter Hill can be seen. Looking east one sees Manchester and the Derbyshire Peak District. On a clear day, it is possible to see Blackpool Tower over thirty miles away, the town of St. Helens and the Widnes Runcorn bridge. Depending on the conditions and direction it is facing, the telescope at Jodrell Bank can be seen to the south-east too. Billinge Hill was also used by the Royal Observer Corps, and there was a bunker at the site, 60 yards West of and below Beacon. The Beacon itself was used for aircraft observation during and after the war. The bunker would have been used to monitor the location of nuclear blasts and the resulting fallout over Lancashire in the event of nuclear war. The post opened in January 1960 and closed in October 1968.

Statue of Queen Victoria

The Statue of Queen Victoria stands on the western side of Victoria Square, St Helens, Merseyside, England. It was created after the death of Queen Victoria and given to the town by Colonel William Windle Pilkington, mayor of St Helens in 1902, and a member of the Pilkington glass manufacturers in the town. Pilkington commissioned George Frampton to design it. Frampton used the same model for the figure of the queen for two other statues, but placed it on thrones and pedestals of different designs. The St Helens statue was unveiled by the Earl of Derby in 1905. Originally placed in the centre of Victoria Square, it was moved to a position on the west side of the square in 2000. The statue is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.

Sutton Mill Dam

The Sutton Mill Dam is a wildlife nature park and area of open water located in Sutton in the south of St Helens in Merseyside, England. Sandwiched between Clock Face Road, Leach Lane and Mill Lane, it measures 360 metres in length with a waterfall at its eastern end. The lake is formed from the Sutton Brook which flows through Sutton from Chester Lane to Jackson Street and ultimately into the St Helens Canal. In 1976 local residents formed the Sutton Mill Dam Action Group to campaign against plans to allow the site to become a dumping ground for industrial waste. As a result of the local communitys efforts, the site was officially opened as a wildlife park in 1987 with natural recovery encouraged as opposed to artificial landscaping. The success of the project was recognised on May 24, 1988 when Bob Monkhouse visited Sutton Mill Dam to the delight of a crowd of 200 onlookers. The Sutton Mill Dam is one of the most popular angling locations in St Helens containing roach, bream, gudgeon and carp and the East Sutton Angling Club hosts popular summer contests for young anglers. A new private housing development on the site of the old Sutton Monastery cited major development to the, and surrounding, Sutton Mill Dam, however such promises failed to materialise when the housing development was finalised by building company Barratt in 2005. Sutton Mill Dam is owned by St Helens Council and a copy of the register of title can be obtained from HM Land Registry under title number MS184549.

Langtree Park

Langtree Park is a rugby league stadium in the Peasley Cross area of St Helens, Merseyside. It has a capacity of over 18,000. It is the home ground of St Helens RFC. The stadium was granted full planning permission on 20 May 2008. On 11 July 2008 the go-ahead was given without the need for a public enquiry and construction started in 2010. It was announced on 15 November 2011 that primary developers, the Langtree Group, had gained the naming rights and that the stadium would be named Langtree Park. The first rugby league match to be played at the stadium was between St. Helens and Widnes on Friday 20 January 2012. St. Helens won the opening game by 42-24 and they moved in ready for the 2012 Super League season. Liverpool F.C. Reserves also play their home games at the stadium.

Hope Academy

Hope Academy is a coeducational secondary school with academy status located in Newton-le-Willows in the English county of Merseyside. Previously a community school administered by St Helens Metropolitan Borough Council, Newton-le-Willows Community High School, and a Roman Catholic High School, St Aelreds, specialising in Technology, the two converted to academy status in September 2011 and was named Hope Academy. It is now a joint-faith school sponsored by Liverpool Hope University, the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool. The Academy is build on the site of the playing fields on Newton-Le-Willows Community High School, with the existing school later demolished once the Academy opened, with the new Academys' playing field constructed on the site of the old school. The site of St Aelreds CTC has since been bought by a housebuilding developer and a site of around 200 dwellings has erected on half of the land, with the other portion being used as a football field. Hope Academy offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. Students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs.
