Shenyang

Shenyang , formerly known by its Manchu name Mukden or as Fengtian , is the provincial capital and largest city of Liaoning Province, as well as the largest city in Northeast China by urban population. According to the 2010 census, the city's urban area has 6.3 million inhabitants, while the total population of the Shenyang municipality is up to 8.1 million. In the 17th century, Shenyang was conquered by the Manchu people and briefly used as the capital of the Qing dynasty. Along with its nearby cities, Shenyang is an important industrial centre in China, and serves as the transportation and commercial hub of China's northeast—particularly with Japan, Russia, and Korea. A center of heavy industry in China since the 1930s, and the spearhead of the Chinese central government's Northeast Area Revitalization Plan, the city has been diversifying its industry and now has a solid industrial foundation, a good land and air transport network, abundant natural resources, and a skilled workforce. The sub-provincial city region includes the nine metropolitan districts of Shenyang proper, the county-level city of Xinmin, and three counties of Liaozhong, Kangping and Faku.

Dalian

Dalian is a major city and seaport in the south of Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. It is the southernmost city of Northeast China and China's northernmost warm water port, at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. Dalian is the province's second largest city and has sub-provincial administrative status; only the provincial capital is larger. The Shandong Peninsula lies southwest across the Bohai Sea; Korea lies across the Yellow Sea to the east. Today, a financial, shipping and logistics center for Northeast Asia, Dalian has a significant history of being used by foreign powers for its ports: Dalian proper was previously known as both Dalniy and Dairen . However it was better known as both Port Arthur and Ryojun from its Lüshunkou district. In 2015, Dalian ranks 41st in the Global Financial Centres Index published by the Z/Yen Group and Qatar Financial Centre Authority, the other Chinese cities on the list being Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing. In 2012, Dalian ranked 82nd in the Global City Competitiveness Index, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit . In 2006, Dalian was named China's most livable city by China Daily.

Lüshun

Lüshunkou District or Lyushunkou District is one of six districts of Dalian, Liaoning province, People's Republic of China. Also called Lüshun City or Lüshun Port , it was formerly known as both Port Arthur and Ryojun . Its area is 512.15 square kilometres and its permanent population as of 2010 is 324,773. Lüshunkou is located at the extreme southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. It has an excellent natural harbour, the possession and control of which became a casus belli of the Russo-Japanese War . Japanese and then Soviet administration continued until 1953. During the first decade of that period, it was world famous and was more significant than the other port on the peninsula, Dalian proper. In Western diplomatic, news, and historical writings, it was known as Port Arthur, and during the period when the Japanese controlled and administered the Liaodong Peninsula it was called Ryojun , the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters in the city's name.

Jade Buddha Palace

Jade Buddha Palace is a temple complex housing one of the largest jade Buddha statues in the world. Located in Anshan City in Liaoning province, China, the complex covers 22,104 square metres . It is situated beside Dongshan Scenic Reserve within 219 park of. The statue was sculpted from a piece of jade 7.95 metres high, 6.88 metres wide, 4.10 metres thick, weighing 260.76 tonnes . The front of the stone has been carved with an image of Sakyamuni Buddha. On the back of the stone Guanyin Buddha has been carved. The jade stone was found on 22 July 1960 in Xiuyan County of Anshan which is known as the "hometown of jade" . It was declared a treasure of the State and listed as a protected property by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. Anshan city government commissioned the carving which took a team of 120 sculptors 18 months to complete. The temple complex was opened on the 3rd of September 1996. The building that houses the jade Buddha statue is 33 metres tall, representing the 33 layers of heaven in Buddhism. It claims to be one the tallest buildings of ancient Chinese architectural style in China.

Benxi Shuidong National Park

Benxi Shuidong was made a national park on January 10, 1994. The Benxi Water Caves are located 30 km east of Benxi, Liaoning province, China. The Benxi Water Caves are a forest of stalactites and stalagmites within a cavern system lit by colored lighting. A river 3,000 meters long, 2 meters deep and wide enough for 20-30 boats, flows through a giant 5-million-year-old cavern system. Temperature inside the cave is constant throughout the year, is 12C. It is warm in winter and cold in summer, also it is open around the year. The national park includes the water caves, a trek to a top of a mountain, woodstone kingdom, Taizi river rafting in a dinghy boat, and the geological museum which hosts many geological relics as well as rare specimens collected from the Benxi national park area.

Zhao Mausoleum

Zhaoling, also known as Beiling is the mausoleum of the second Qing emperor, Huang Taji, and his empress Xiaoduanwen Borjite. The tomb is located within Beiling Park, in the northern part of Shenyang, in Liaoning province, and is a popular area attraction. The tomb complex took eight years to build and has a row of animal statues leading to it. The tomb and surrounding park cover an area of 3,300,000 square metres making it the largest of the three imperial tombs north of the great wall. The area around the tomb was originally set aside for imperial use and ordinary people were forbidden entry. This forbidden area was opened to the public in 1928 and now forms Shenyangs Beiling Park. The site is aligned on a north-south axis set west of Shenyang citys old north axis. This access forms the sacred way of about 1.2 km that leads from the park gate to the tomb buildings. The way itself is made in three paths. The centre path was for the deities only or bearers of offerings. The path of the lefthand of the sacred way was for the ruling emperor and the righthand path was for officials and imperial staff. Halfway along the royal way stands a statue of Huang Taiji in a bold stance and wearing military dress. To either side lie extensive park lands of forest and lakes. At the northern end of the royal way, the route crosses a bridge over a lake beyond which stand a series of gates that mark the entrance to the inner tomb area. The first gate is made of marble with ornate carvings. Heavy steel supports have been added to the front and back of this gate to prevent it falling over. The second gate takes you through the walls that surround the tomb. The royal way continues through forested land. A pair of stone pillars mark the beginning of the inner tomb structures. To either side of the route stand four pairs of stone animals. These are two xiezhi, two qilin, two white horses, and lastly two camels. Beyond these guardians, the way is blocked by a small building inside which is a large steele. This steele tells of the deeds done by the dead emperor. It is mounted on top of a large statue of a turtle. After this, to either side of the way stand four buildings. These were used by the emperor and his staff to prepare themselves and their offerings before their ceremony to honor the past emperor. After these stands the main temple complex. This is a walled area within which the ceremonies for worshiping the emperor were carried out. The tomb mound and underground palace stand in a semi-circular walled area north of the temple area. The temple walls are high, with a walkway set on top of them. Each corner is marked with a small tower and two larger towers stand over the north and south gates of the temple area. Within the temple complexs walls stand five buildings. The first four, set on either side of the central axis, were used for preparing the ceremony. At the northern end of the temple area, on top of the central axis, stands the altar building. It was here that the rites of worship were carried out. The building houses representations of the dead emperor. In front of the altar building, the emperor and his household would make offerings to their ancestors. To the south west of the altar stands a small stone structure in which offerings, after being presented on the altar, would be burnt. Beyond the altar building, a final gate leads out of the temple area to the wall of the tomb mound itself. The underground tomb remains sealed, its contents hidden from view. Within lies Emperor Huang Taji, and his consorts along with a multitude of priceless offerings.

Xinghai Square

Xinghai Square, is a city square in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. It is located to the north of Dalian Bay. It covers a total area of 1.1 million m², making it the largest city square in the world. Its name literally means "the Sea of Stars". Xinghai Square was built at the centennial of the City of Dalian in 1998. The sculptures of 1000 footprints and an opened book facing the sea commemorates the vicissitudes of the citys history. Looking into the sea, the Xinghai Bay Cross-Sea Bridge can be seen, whose construction is slated to be finished in 2015. A huabiao is located in the center of the square. Around the square are high-end apartments, restaurants, banks, luxury sports car dealers and an amusement park. The Xinghai Bay beach, the Castle Hotel, Dalian Morden History Museum and Dalian Shell Museum are also nearby. Located on the opposite side of the sculpture complex is the Xinghai CBD, which houses among other things Dalian Xinghai Convention Exhibitions Center, Dalian World Expo Center and the headquarters of Dalian Commodity Exchange. For 10 days in late-July early-August, Xinghai Square holds the annual International Beer Festival.

Long Live the Victory of Mao Zedong Thought

Long Live the Victory of Mao Zedong Thought is an epoxy resin statue in Shenyang, Liaoning province, Peoples Republic of China. The monument is located on Zhongshan Square in the centre of the city. The statue is one of the largest of Chairman Mao Zedong in the country. It is one of the main provincial Cultural Revolution-era monuments not removed in later years. The monument was erected by students from the Art Academy, who worked for two years on the project. They were supervised by a committee of peasants and workers. It was inaugurated on October 1, 1970, during the 21st anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China. The statue of Chairman Mao is 30 feet tall, and the base another 30 feet tall. The phrase "Long Live the Victory of Mao Zedong Thought" was carved on the front of the base. The base is surrounded by statues of 58 worker-peasant-soldier heroes. They are divided into eight groups, representing different struggles of the Chinese people under the leadership of Chairman Mao. Most of the surrounding characters originally carried Little Red Books, but most of these have been removed. The first group represents soldiers and civilians, propagating the appeal of the 9th National Congress of the Communist Party of China . The group of statues at back of the base is titled "Party Building", and seeks to display the early phase of the Communist Party. The three groups on the left illustrate struggles during the Chinese Civil War. The remaining three groups on the right side of the base illustrate the phase of socialist revolution.

Hunnan District

Hunnan District , formerly Dongling District until July 2014, is one of nine districts of Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, People's Republic of China, and forms part of the eastern and southeastern suburbs. The district contains 12 subdistricts of Shenyang proper, 6 towns, 1 rural township, and 1 ethnic rural township. It borders Shenbei New Area to the north, Sujiatun to the south, Heping to the west, and Shenhe and Dadong to the northwest; it also borders the prefecture-level city of Fushun to the east. The former name Dongling refers to the Eastern Tomb, or Fuling Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is in fact two Qing dynasty tombs: of Nurhachi, the first emperor of Qing. The district is rapidly becoming a developed, high-end residential area. There are two corridors along two major highways, one leading to the Eastern Tomb and Fushun, the other leading to the Shenyang Taoxian International Airport, along which one can see luxury apartments and sleek commercial development.

Shenyang Pharmaceutical University

Shenyang Pharmaceutical University is a university in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. It is the first research institutes in pharmaceutical sciences in China. Shenyang Pharmaceutical University has historical traditions that have brought it to prominence as one of two comprehensive pharmaceutical universities in all of China. The university started at Ruijin in the Jiangxi in 1931 and moved to its present location on the banks of the Hun River in Shenyang, Liaoning in 1949. SPU has developed into a multidisciplinary, multilevel and multiform institute of higher learning, covering wide and diverse majors within the domain of pharmaceutical study. It consists of the schools of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical engineering, Traditional Chinese Medicines, Business Administration, Basic Courses, and Adult Education. SPU has been authorized to confer master's and doctor's degrees and to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, as well as other countries. SPU has resources that facilitate learning: The Institute of Material Medicine; The Institute of Pharmaceutical Education of Higher Learning; The Computer Center; The Audio-visual Education Program Center; The Center of Instrumental Analysis; The Botanical Garden of Medicinal Herbs, and a subsidiary pharmaceutical factory. SPU has a staff of 1,111, among them there are 394 full-time teachers. The student population has grown to more than 7,000. There is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 182 professors and associate professors (nearly one-quarter of them have work experience abroad, nearly one-third have doctorates). More than 3,000 academic papers have been published by SPU academics on research toward recommended dosages of pharmaceutical preparations, polyphase liposomes and solid preparations, on chemical and active components of traditional Chinese medicines and natural drugs, on the distinction and properties of chemical models of traditional Chinese medicines and the study of their quality control. All of this scientific exploration is at the forefront of research in China. In recent years, numerous mutually beneficial collaborative efforts have come to fruition between the University's academics and all levels of government: city, province, and state.
