Top Attractions in Milne Bay Province

Louisiade Archipelago

The Louisiade Archipelago is a string of ten larger volcanic islands frequently fringed by coral reefs, and 90 smaller coral islands located 200 km southeast of New Guinea, stretching over more than 160 kilometres and spread over an ocean area of 26,000 square kilometres between the Solomon Sea to the north and the Coral Sea to the south. The aggregate land area of the islands is about 1,871 square kilometres, with Vanatinai being the largest. Sideia Island and Basilaki Island lie closest to New Guinea, while Misima, Vanatinai, and Rossel islands lie further east. The archipelago is divided into the Local Level Government areas Louisiade Rural, and Yaleyamba . The LLG areas are part of Samarai-Murua District of Milne Bay. The seat of the Louisiade Rural LLG is Bwagaoia on Misima Island, the population center of the archipelago. The seat of the Yaleyamba is changed every couple of years between Rambuso and Jingo .

Iwa Island

Iwa Island is an island located in the Solomon Sea approximately 130 miles from mainland New Guinea and 310 miles from Port Moresby. It is part of the Marshall Bennett Islands group and considered part of Papua New Guinea. The island is featured briefly in the 1963 documentary " La Donna Nel Mondo ." As of that time, it was home to a retired Scottish colonel, Roger Hopkins, his 84 wives, and their 52 children. It is stated that his wives are 13–18 years of age. Hopkins, much older than his wives, was said to be unintelligible as he was both deaf and mute — although he is wearing a hearing aid in his right ear during filming. He is seen smoking tobacco from a pipe and wearing worn-out Western clothing, but otherwise there appear to be no objects of Western origin on the island. At the census of population of 2000, Iwa Island had a population of 766, making it the second most populous island of the Marshall Bennett Islands, after Gawa Island. Obomatu Village is located on Iwa Island.

Normanby Island

Normanby Island is a volcanic, 400 square mile , L-shaped island, the southern most island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands group. It is part of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. Normanby Island is 10 miles north-east of East Cape, on the island of New Guinea, separated by Goschen Strait, and is separated by the Dawson Strait from Fergusson Island. The island rises to 3,800 feet in the Prevost Range in the southeast. The terrain includes low coastal plains and swamplands, high mountains and steep coastal slopes. Sewa Bay provides shelter on the west coast and Awaiara Bay on the east coast. The largest settlement, and district headquarters, is Esa’ala at the island’s northern end. In 1873, the island was visited by British Captain John Moresby, commanding HMS Basilisk, who named it after the Marquess of Normanby, George Augustus Constantine Phipps, a governor of Queensland, Australia. Once known to produce gold, Normanby now exports copra and some timber. Recent discoveries of gold deposits are beginning to be exploited.

Vanatinai

Vanatinai (also called Tagula and Sudest, for the names of the extreme capes of the island) is a volcanic island in the south-east of the Louisiade Archipelago within Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. The reef fringed island is approximately 360 kilometres (224 miles) south-east of New Guinea and 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Misima. With an area of 830 square kilometres (320.5 square miles), it is the largest island of the archipelago. Tagula town, the main settlement, is located on the north-west coast. The population was 3628 as of 2014. The principal export is copra. The island is 63 kilometres (39 miles) long, stretching from Cape Tagula to Cape Sudest, and up to 13 kilometres (8 mi) wide. A wooded mountain range runs through the length of the island, with the summit, Mount Riu (806 metres or 2,644 feet) near the center. The most important peaks of the range are, from west to east: Mount Madau (269 metres or 883 feet) Mount Gangulua (439 metres or 1,440 feet) Mount Riu (formerly called Mount Rattlesnake) (806 metres or 2,644 feet) Mount Imau (485 metres or 1,591 feet) Mount Arumbi (350 metres or 1,150 feet) The island was the site of a gold rush that peaked in 1889. Gold was found in nearly all of the island's water courses. Rambuso Village is located on the north coast of the eastern part of the island, where Rambuso Creek flows into the Pacific Ocean. Entry through the reef to the harbour is deep and easy to see during daylight. Many visiting yachts and local trading boats use this protected anchorage. In 2010 the villagers and several visiting yachties rebuilt the wharf and causeway. The villagers new slogan is "Rambuso Creek the gateway to Sudest". The new wharf helped Rambuso develop and now the busty town has some 500 citizens. Several species are endemic to the island, including the aptly named Tagula white-eye, Tagula honeyeater and Tagula butcherbird. The first recorded sighting by Europeans of Vanatinai Island was by the Spanish expedition of Luís Vaez de Torres on 14 July 1606. The island has an airport, code (IATA-Code „TGL“) for public transport, near Tagula village.

Fergusson Island

Fergusson Island is the largest island of the DEntrecasteaux Islands, in Papua New Guinea. It has an area of just over 500 square miles, and mostly consists of mountainous regions, covered by rain forests. There are three large volcanoes on the island. Fergusson Island is situated 3 km across the Dawson Strait from Normanby Island and 4 km from Goodenough Island across Moresby Strait. The highest peak at 6,801 feet near Wadalei in the northeast of Fergusson Island is an extinct volcano. Seymour Bay is located on the west coast, Sebutuia Bay on the east, and Hughes Bay on the north. The principal settlements, Salamo and Mapamoiwa, are on the southern coast. Gold deposits at Wapolu on the north coast were worked briefly in the mid-1990s. The island was named by Captain John Moresby after Sir James Fergusson, who was Governor-General of New Zealand from 1873-74. On June 30, 1942, during World War II, a United States Navy PT-Boat base was established on the island. An Alamo Scouts Training Center was established at Kalo Kalo on November 28, 1943.

Brumer Islands

Brumer Islands are an island group of Papua New Guinea. The islands are located off the southeast coast of New Guinea, about 10 km from the South Cape. Badila Bedda Bedda Bonarua , is the westernmost island of the group. it is long and narrow, and extends over 14 km from northeast to southwest. It is dense with coconut forests and other trees. The soil is fertile. In the valleys, many fenced fields of the farmers who raise bananas and sugar cane can be seen. At its highest point, Mount Bonarua, it reaches 120 m. There is a light beacon on the southwest cape of the island. Harikoia, the second largest island is located east of Badila Bedda Bedda Bonarua, it is higher and reaches 165 m. The other islands of the group, including Ahana rock, are all located southeast of Harikoia. The islands belong to Alotau LLG, and are not related to Louisiade archipelago.
