Roes Creek Campground Camptender's Cabin

The Roes Creek Campground Camptender's Cabin, also known as the Rising Sun Campground Ranger Cabin, in Glacier National Park is an example of the National Park Service Rustic style. Built in 1937 and designed by the National Park Service Branch of Plans and Design, this small cabin is significant for its association with an important trend in park visitation patterns: the increase of middle-class automobile tourists and federal development of infrastructure appropriate to this new clientele. In addition to basic services, an increased NPS presence was also warranted: campgrounds were assigned seasonal “camptenders” who performed custodial duties and provided assistance to visitors.

Pass Creek Snowshoe Cabin

The Pass Creek Snowshoe Cabin, built in 1938 in Glacier National Park, is a significant resource both architecturally and historically as a shelter, usually 8-12 miles apart, for patrolling backcountry rangers. The Pass Creek shelter was originally built by trail crews on their own initiative as a more permanent and bear-proof accommodation than tents, which had been repeatedly raided. The cabin is therefore slightly larger and taller than the Park Service-standard cabins.

Lewis Range

The Lewis Range is a mountain range located in the Rocky Mountains of northern Montana, U.S. and extreme southern Alberta, Canada. Formed by the Lewis Overthrust beginning 170 million years ago, an enormous slab of Precambrian rocks 3 miles thick, 50 miles wide and 160 miles long faulted and slid over newer rocks of the Cretaceous period. In this relatively rare occurrence, older rocks are now positioned above newer ones. The Lewis Range is within Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, and in Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex located in Flathead and Lewis and Clark National Forests in Montana. The Continental Divide spans much of the uppermost sections of the range. Major peaks in the range include Mount Cleveland, which is the highest peak in the range and in Glacier National Park. Other prominent peaks include Mount Stimson, Mount Jackson, Mount Siyeh, Going to the Sun Mountain, and the isolated Chief Mountain . The Chinese wall in the Bob Marshall Wilderness is a 1,000 foot high feature that runs for 40 miles . Major passes include Marias Pass and Logan Pass which bisects Glacier National Park east to west.

Rising Sun

Rising Sun is located along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, 7 miles from the east entrance into Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.. Rising Sun is a wayside area that has a National Park Service campground, and a camp store, restaurant, motel and guest cabins which are managed by the parks concessionaire. In the immediate area, there is also a boat dock as well as sightseeing boats which allow visitors to tour Saint Mary Lake, the second largest lake in the park. The Rising Sun Auto Camp is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Blackfoot Glacier

Blackfoot Glacier is the second largest of the remaining 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park, Montana. Blackfoot Glacier is just to the north of Blackfoot Mountain and near Jackson Glacier. The glacier was most recently measured in 2005 at 441 acres, yet when first documented in 1850, the glacier also included the now separate Jackson Glacier and together, they covered 1,875 acres . In 1850, there were an estimated 150 glaciers in the park. Glaciologists have stated that by the year 2030, all the glaciers in the park may disappear. However, under a modest increase in overall carbon dioxide levels, some glaciers will remain until the late 23rd century. Jackson and Blackfoot glaciers have been selected for monitoring by the U.S. Geological Surveys Glacier Monitoring Research program, which is researching changes to the mass balance of glaciers in and surrounding Glacier National Park. The glacier is being monitored using remote sensing equipment and repeat photography, where images of the glacier are taken from identical locations periodically. Between 1966 and 2005, Blackfoot Glacier lost over 23 percent of its surface area. In the summer of 2007, a portion of Blackfoot Glacier broke off and formed an ice avalanche.

Chaney Glacier

Chaney Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier is situated in a cirque to the southeast of Mount Kipp on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. Chaney Glacier is one of several glaciers that have been selected for monitoring by the U.S. Geological Surveys Glacier Monitoring Research program, which is researching changes to the mass balance of glaciers in and surrounding Glacier National Park. The glacier is being monitored using remote sensing equipment and repeat photography, where images of the glacier are taken from identical locations periodically. Since 1911, Chaney glacier has retreated considerably. Between 1966 and 2005, the glacier lost over 29 percent of its surface area. The repeat photographs below document the changes to the glacier from 1911 to 2005.

Gem Glacier

Gem Glacier is the smallest named glacier in Glacier National Park . Located on the east side of the Continental Divide arête known as the Garden Wall, the glacier is situated on the cliff face above the better known Grinnell Glacier. Gem Glacier is a hanging glacier, and drapes down from the north face of the steep arete to which it is attached. Gem Glacier is only 5 acres in area and is far below the 25 acres threshold often cited as qualifying as an active glacier. Between 1966 and 2005, Gem Glacier lost 30 percent of its acreage and Grinnell Glacier lost 40 percent.

Grinnell Glacier

Grinnell Glacier is in the heart of Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier is named for George Bird Grinnell, an early American conservationist and explorer, who was also a strong advocate of ensuring the creation of Glacier National Park. The glacier is in the Lewis Range and rests on the north flank of Mount Gould at an altitude averaging 7,000 feet, in the Many Glacier region of the park. The glacier has been one of the most photographed glaciers in the park and many of these photographs date back to the mid 19th century. When compared with images taken over subsequent years, the glacier has obviously retreated substantially. In 1850, at the end of what has been referred to as the Little Ice Age, Grinnell Glacier measured 710 acres, including the area of The Salamander Glacier, an ice apron or shelf glacier that used to be attached to Grinnell, but is now separate. By 1993, Grinnell Glacier measured 220 acres and The Salamander measured 57 acres . Between 1966 and 2005, Grinnell Glacier lost almost 40 percent of its acreage. Glaciologists have predicted that if carbon dioxide levels increase at a worst-case scenario, all the glaciers in the park, including Grinnell, will disappear by the year 2030. However, under a modest increase in overall carbon dioxide levels, some glaciers will remain until the year 2277. Gem Glacier, one of the smallest remaining glaciers in the park, is located on the Garden Wall above Grinnell. Repeat photography taken between the years 1938 and 2009 show that Grinnell Glacier has retreated significantly over that period. The Salamander and Gem Glaciers have shown little change in area over the same period of time. The Salamander receives its name for its shape and its coloring, which comes from the serratia bacteria that grows on it. The glacier can be reached after a 6-mile hike from a trailhead beginning at Swiftcurrent Lake. The trail has an altitude gain of just over 1,600 ft, with the majority of that in the second half of the hike.

Herbst Glacier

Herbst Glacier is located in the US state of Montana in Glacier National Park. The glacier is northeast of Mount Custer and lies above Lake Nooney at an elevation between 7,000 ft and 8,000 ft above sea level. Immediately east of the Continental Divide, the glacier covers an area of approximately 13 acres and does not meet the threshold of 25 acres often cited as being the minimum size to qualify as an active glacier. Between 1966 and 2005, the glacier lost almost 70 percent of its acreage.

Jackson Glacier

Jackson Glacier is approximately the seventh largest of the remaining 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park located in the US state of Montana. A part of the largest grouping of glaciers in the park, Jackson Glacier rests on the north side of Mount Jackson. The glacier was most recently measured in 2005 at 250 acres, yet when first documented in 1850, the glacier also included the now separate Blackfoot Glacier and together, they covered 1,875 acres . Between 1966 and 2005, Jackson Glacier lost almost a third of its acreage. When the two glaciers were united prior to their separation sometime before 1929, they were known simply as Blackfoot Glacier. In 1850, there were an estimated 150 glaciers in the park. Glaciologists have stated that by the year 2030, many if not all of the glaciers in the park may disappear completely. Jackson and Blackfoot glaciers have been selected for monitoring by the U.S. Geological Surveys Glacier Monitoring Research program, which is researching changes to the mass balance of glaciers in and surrounding Glacier National Park. The glacier is being monitored using remote sensing equipment and repeat photography, where images of the glacier are taken from identical locations periodically. Jackson Glacier is one of the easiest of the parks glaciers to observe, and is located south of the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the east side of the Continental Divide, upper St. Mary Valley.

Logan Glacier

Logan Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier is situated in a cirque to the northeast of Mount Logan. Just east of the Continental Divide, Logan Glacier is northwest of Red Eagle Glacier. Estimated in 2005 to cover an area of 75 acres, Logan Glacier covered almost 125 acres in 1966, a reduction in area of 40 percent in about 40 years. Comparing images of the glacier taken in 1914 with those from 2009, indicates that the glacier has experienced extensive retreat.

Old Sun Glacier

Old Sun Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier is situated immediately to the east and northeast of Mount Merritt at an elevation between 9,400 and 8,600 ft above sea level. The glacier was named after a sun priest of the Blackfoot called "Ntas", translated to Old Sun. Old Sun Glacier has numerous crevasses and appears to have a healthy accumulation zone. Old Sun Glacier lost 12 percent of its surface area between 1966 and 2005.

Red Eagle Glacier

Red Eagle Glacier is a glacier remnant in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacieret is a hanging glacier located to the southeast of Mount Logan and Logan Glacier. Between 1966 and 2005, Red Eagle Glacier lost 53 percent of its surface area and now covers less than 25 acres which is below the threshold to qualify as an active glacier. Comparing images of the glacier taken in 1914 with those from 2009, indicates that the glacier has experienced extensive retreat.

Shepard Glacier was one of a number of glaciers that have been documented by the United States Geological Service to have retreated significantly in Glacier National Park. Shepard Glacier was measured in 2009 to have decreased to less than 25 acres, considered to be a minimal size to qualify as being considered an active glacier. Between 1966 and 2005, Shepard Glacier lost 56 percent of its surface area. Swiftcurrent Glacier

Swiftcurrent Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana.The glacier is on the east side of the Continental Divide arête known as the Garden Wall. Swiftcurrent Glacier is one of several glaciers that are being monitored to determine stream flow alterations that occur due to glacial retreat. Compared to other glaciers in Glacier National Park, Swiftcurrent Glacier has experienced relatively slow retreat. As of 2005, the glacier had an area of 55 acres, a 14 percent reduction since 1966.

The Salamander Glacier

The Salamander Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier lies on a shelf on the east side of the arête which is part of the Continental Divide, at an average elevation of 7,200 feet above sea level. The Salamander Glacier covered an area of approximately 57 acres as of 1993. Before Grinnell Glacier retreated significantly, it used to encompass The Salamander Glacier and the two become separate sometime before 1929. Many Glacier

Many Glacier is an area within Glacier National Park which is located in the U.S. state of Montana. The Many Glacier region is located north of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, on the east side of the park. Lake Sherburne is the large lake in the area and the Many Glacier Hotel, the largest hotel within the park, is along the shore of the adjacent Swiftcurrent Lake. The Many Glacier Hotel and surrounding buildings are a National Historic Landmark, with original construction dating back to 1915. Many Glacier is surrounded by the high peaks of the Lewis Range, and numerous hiking trails can be accessed from the area. The region is noted for numerous lakes, waterfalls and dense coniferous forests interspersed with alpine meadows. Major sites in the immediate vicinity that can be accessed by trails include Lake Josephine, Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Cracker Lake, Granite Park Chalet, Iceberg Cirque and the Ptarmigan Tunnel, which is a hiking tunnel carved through the mountainside during the 1930s. Tour boats allow visitors an opportunity to venture onto Swiftcurrent Lake. Other activities in the region include ranger guided nature hikes, horseback riding, fishing and camping.

Ahern Glacier

Ahern Glacier is in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glacier was named after George Patrick Ahern. Ahern Glacier is situated on a ridge between Ipasha Peak to the north and Ahern Peak to the south at an elevation between 8,800 feet and 8,000 feet above sea level, immediately east of the Continental Divide. Meltwater from the glacier feeds Ahern Glacier Falls, a waterfall which descends an estimated 1,680 feet in one sheer drop to a talus slope below en route to Helen Lake. Between 1966 and 2005, Ahern Glacier lost 13 percent of its surface area.

Carter Glaciers

The Carter Glaciers are in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The glaciers are situated along a ridge immediately to the east of the Continental Divide, mainly below an unnamed peak which rises to 9,164 feet . The glaciers cover an area of approximately 50 acres at an elevation between 8,500 feet and 7,200 feet above sea level. The Carter Glaciers consist of between three and four separate small glacial remnants, none of which meet the threshold of 25 acres often cited as being the minimum size to qualify as an active glacier.

Dixon Glacier

The glacier is situated in a cirque immediately to the north of The Sentinel at an elevation between 8,500 feet and 7,400 feet above sea level. Immediately east of the Continental Divide, the glacier is 1 mi east of Thunderbird Glacier. Dixon Glacier covers an area of approximately 59 acres and between 1966 and 2005 lost over 45 percent of its surface area.

Hudson Glacier

Hudson Glacier is located in the US state of Montana in Glacier National Park. The glacier is situated in a cirque immediately to the east of the Continental Divide at an elevation between 7,500 feet and 7,200 feet above sea level. A half-mile south of Lake Nooney and Lake Wurdeman, Hudson Glacier covers an area of approximately 8 acres and does not meet the threshold of 25 acres often cited as being the minimum size to qualify as an active glacier. Between 1966 and 2005, the glacier lost more than 66 percent of its acreage.

Ipasha Glacier

Ipasha Glacier is located in the US state of Montana in Glacier National Park. The glacier is situated in a cirque to the southeast of Chaney Glacier and immediately east of the Continental Divide at an elevation between 8,000 feet and 7,600 feet above sea level. The glacier covers an area of approximately 52 acres as measured in 2005, which is a third smaller than it was in 1966. Melt water from the glacier flows over Ipasha Falls en route to Ipasha Lake.

North Swiftcurrent Glacier

Thunderbird Glacier

The glacier is situated on the east side Continental Divide below Thunderbird Mountain at an average elevation of 8,000 feet above sea level. As of 2005, Thunderbird Glacier consisted of numerous ice patches covering a total of 58 acres, which is over 33 percent smaller than it was in 1966.
