Law Courts

The Law Courts building is part of the landmark Robson Square complex in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was designed by renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. The Law Courts building occupies the southern block of the three city block complex, provincial government offices the middle block, and the Vancouver Art Gallery the northern block. The building is used exclusively by the two higher courts of the Province of British Columbia: the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

A place of worship in Greater Vancouver, the cathedral is located at 690 Burrard Street on the north-east corner of West Georgia Street and Burrard Street, directly across from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

Holy Rosary Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, commonly known as Holy Rosary Cathedral, is a late 19th-century French Gothic revival church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver. It is located in the downtown area of the city at the intersection of Richards and Dunsmuir streets. The construction of the cathedral began in 1899 on the site of an earlier church by the same name. It opened on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1900, was blessed the day after, and was consecrated in 1953. The style has been described as resembling the medieval Chartres Cathedral in France. The church was elevated to the status of cathedral in 1916. It is listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register and is a legally protected building.

The BC Sports Hall of Fame collects, preserves, studies and interprets materials that relate to British Columbias sport history. In 1993, the BC Sports Hall of Fame opened in BC Place Stadium, located at Gate A, the main entrance to the Stadium. Vancouver, BC Place. The BC Sports Hall of Fame re-opened in January 2012 after having been closed to the public for a 20-month period while the new roof was being installed on BC Place Stadium. The Hall has opened a new Vancouver 2010 Gallery boasting the worlds largest and broadest collection of 2010 Olympic and Paralympic artifacts, as well as a new Hall of Champions, the Halls signature gallery. The museum features galleries on BC Sporting legends Terry Fox, Rick Hansen and Greg Moore. As well, the museum features several multi-sport galleries including a gallery on Aboriginal sport, the BC professional sports teams, the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and In Her Footsteps, a gallery focused on women in sport. The museum features over 50,000 artifacts and archival documents in its collection, and research visits can be made to view the archives upon appointment.

Or Gallery

The Or Gallery is a non-profit artist run centre based in Vancouver, Canada. The gallery is run by a paid Director/Curator and a voluntary Board of Directors. The Director/Curator of the Or is an appointed working artist who is hired for a limited time. Each Director changes the focus of the programming creating exhibitions, publications and events that examine a diverse range of artists and ideas. These appointments along with guest curators permit the gallery to place an emphasis on the discursive structures of the environments that art is created in. Regardless of the Director/Curator the Or Gallery maintains a commitment to contemporary art that is challenging and experimental. The gallery supports and exhibits artists whose work is critically, issue, and/or conceptually based. The Or Gallery was established in 1983 by Vancouver artist Laiwan in a storefront space on Franklin Street in East Vancouver. The gallery space has changed a few times with the most recent move in 2008 to the Ors current location on Hamilton Street in Downtown Vancouver. Since 1983 the Or Gallery has provided exhibition space for close to 300 artists in including Francis Alÿs, Phil Collins, Martin Creed, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Germaine Koh, Barbara Kruger, Jeff Wall and Lawrence Weiner. Since its establishment the Or Gallery has tried to exhibit works that address issues in the community from Phillppe Raphanels 1991 exhibit, Lip Synch, whose abstract paintings call into question the foundations of landscape painting in British Columbia to a 2009 group exhibition, The Wild So Close, which examines sites of leisure and recreation in light of the upcoming Vancouver Olympics. The exhibition included work from Tacita Dean, Leslie Grant and Al Bersch, Jason Hendrickson, David Horvitz, and Donald Lawrence. In February 2008, the Or Gallery was featured in the Artists Choice: Top 100 Galleries-list in Flash Art Magazine, as one of only two Canadian galleries listed. Between June 27 to August 1, 2009, The Or Gallery hosted Science Fiction 01, a focus on the speculative and social aspects of science fiction. It featured artists Brady Cranfield, Robert Filliou, and Holly Ward. Science Fiction 01 is the first of roughly 88 science fiction-related exhibitions planned for the Or Gallery over the course of the next 260 years.

Beatty Street Drill Hall

The Beatty Street Drill Hall is a Canadian Forces armoury located at 620 Beatty Street in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the home of The British Columbia Regiment, an armoured reconnaissance reserve regiment, the oldest military unit in Vancouver, and the most senior militia in the province.

Queen Elizabeth Theatre

The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is a performing arts venue in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Along with the Orpheum and the Vancouver Playhouse, it is one of three facilities operated by the Vancouver Civic Theatres Department . It is named after the current Canadian monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Formerly the home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, which is now based at the Orpheum, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre is the home of the Vancouver Opera and Ballet BC, in addition to hosting various other musical events year-round. The theatre has a 70 wide x 40 deep stage / performing area. The building holds two venues: the 2,929 seat main auditorium and the 668 seat Playhouse Theatre. The theatre was the first project by the Montreal-based architectural partnership Affleck, Desbarats, Dimakopoulos, Lebensold, Sise. It opened in July, 1959.

Vogue Theatre

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver on 918 Granville Street, the Vogue Theatre has been one of the defining architectural achievements in Vancouver since its opening in 1941. Built in the Art Deco/Art Moderne style, the Vogue Theatre was originally built as a movie house and a venue for the performing arts on Vancouver’s “Theatre Row”.

Vancouver International Film Centre

The Vancouver International Film Centre houses the 175-seat Vancity Theatre, along with a production room and offices for the Vancouver International Film Festival. Located at 1181 Seymour Street, the theatre can accommodate seminars, live performances, film, video and multimedia presentations. The building, designed by Hewitt and Kwasnicky, Architects, opened in September 2005 just in time for the 2005 Vancouver International Film Festival. The annual Game Design Expo, hosted by Vancouver Film Schools Game Design program, takes place in the Vancity Theatre.

Rogers Arena

Rogers Arena is an indoor sports arena located at 800 Griffiths Way in the downtown area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Opened in 1995, the arena was known as General Motors Place from its opening until July 6, 2010, when General Motors Canada ended its naming rights sponsorship and a new agreement for those rights was reached with Rogers Communications. Rogers Arena was built to replace Pacific Coliseum as Vancouvers primary indoor sports facility and in part due to the National Basketball Associations 1995 expansion into Canada, when Vancouver and Toronto were given expansion teams. It is home to the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League and hosted the ice hockey events at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The name of the arena temporarily became Canada Hockey Place during the Olympics. It was previously home to the Vancouver Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association from 1995 to 2001.

Hudson's Bay Vancouver

The Hudson's Bay Company's flagship Vancouver store is a six-storey building in downtown Vancouver. Located at 674 Granville Street, on the corner of Georgia Street, the cream terra cotta building with Corinthian columns was built in 1927. The current store was built on the site of another HBC store from 1893. The last additions were made in 1949. The original HBC store in Vancouver was a small storefront on Cordova between Carrall and Abbott.

Vancouver Convention Centre

The Vancouver Convention Centre (formerly known as the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre, or VCEC), is a convention centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; it is one of Canada's largest convention centres. With the opening of the new West Building in 2009, it now has 466,500 ft² of meeting space. It is owned by the British Columbia Pavilion Corporation, a crown corporation owned by the government of British Columbia.

Hawksworth Restaurant

Hawksworth Restaurant, located in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, British Columbia, is a fine-dining restaurant owned by chef David Hawksworth, the youngest chef to be inducted into the B.C. Restaurant Hall of Fame. The restaurant was named, "Restaurant of the Year" in 2012 by Macleans.

Metropolitan Vancouver Hotel

Metropolitan Vancouver Hotel is a hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The hotel has 197 rooms and 7,600 square foot of conference and banquet rooms, and its restaurant, Diva, is critically acclaimed, and is headed by chef Dino Renaerts. The hotel, located between the financial district and the shopping area of Downtown Vancouver, is popular with businessmen. The decor is French-inspired, with dark wood beams and high ceilings.

B.C. Place

BC Place is a multi-purpose stadium located at the north side of False Creek, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is owned and operated by the BC Pavilion Corporation , a crown corporation of the province. It is currently the home of the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer as well as the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The stadium also served as the main stadium for the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Paralympics which Vancouver hosted. The stadium opened on June 19, 1983 and was built as an indoor structure with an air-supported roof, the largest of its kind in the world upon its opening. Following the 2010 Winter Olympics, BC Place was closed for several months as part of an extensive revitalization, the centrepiece of which was replacing the inflatable roof with a retractable roof supported by cables. Once construction was completed, the stadium's new roof was also the largest of its type.

Larwill Park

Larwill Park, also known as the Cambie Street Grounds, is a former park and sporting field in what is now downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Currently a parking lot, the site was also the location of the bus depot of Pacific Coach Stage Lines and Greyhound Bus Lines from World War II until 1993, when the bus depot moved to Pacific Central Station.

Gastown

Gastown is a national historic site in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the northeast end of Downtown adjacent to the Downtown Eastside. Its historical boundaries were the waterfrontColumbia Street, Hastings Street, and Cambie Street, which were the borders of the 1870 townsite survey, the proper name and postal address of which was Granville, B.I. . The official boundary does not include most of Hastings Street except for the Woodwards and Dominion Buildings, and stretches east past Columbia St., to the laneway running parallel to the west side of Main Street.

Harbour Centre

Harbour Centre is a notable skyscraper in the central business district of Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The "Lookout" tower atop the office building makes it one of the tallest structures in Vancouver and a prominent landmark on the citys skyline. With its 360-degree viewing deck, it also serves as a tourist attraction with the Top of Vancouver Revolving Restaurant, offering a physically unobstructed view of the city. During the dot-com boom of the 1990s, it served as the headquarters for several up and coming tech firms, including Stormix Technologies, NetNation and others. Harbour Centre opened in 1977. Designed by WZMH Architects, the building is listed as being 28 stories tall, though the tower/observation deck extends above the 28 office floors . There is some disagreement as to the buildings height. According to the Vancouver Lookouts website the observation deck is 168 m above the street level. The CTBUH however lists the buildings architectural height as actually being 147 m . Furthermore Skyscraperpage lists the buildings height to the roof as being only 139.6 m . This is stated to be the height from the Hastings Street entrance while the height from the back entrance on Cordova Street is 146 m . It also lists the buildings pinnacle height to the tip of the antenna as being 170.1 m . In any event it remains one of the tallest office buildings in the city. The building was British Columbias tallest measured by pinnacle height until the construction of Living Shangri-La in 2009. Harbour Centre is located at 555 West Hastings Street in Downtown Vancouver. It is steps away from Waterfront Station, a major multi-modal transit hub which serves as the Downtown Vancouver terminal for various TransLink operations including SeaBus, West Coast Express, SkyTrain, Canada Line and buses. Simon Fraser University operates its downtown Harbour Centre campus in the adjoining Spencer building and houses the Center for Dialogue and Canadas World. The downtown Simpsons-Sears department store was located here before it closed in 1987. There is also a red Santa hat on the spire that lights up during the holiday season. Vancouver Coast Guard Radio operates from Harbour Centre, providing distress watch and vessel traffic services to the North Arm Fraser River, Burrard Inlet, Indian Arm, English Bay and Howe Sound.

Canada Place

Canada Place is a building situated on the Burrard Inlet waterfront of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the home of the Vancouver Convention Centre, the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel, Vancouvers World Trade Centre, and FlyOver Canada . The buildings exterior is covered by fabric roofs resembling sails. It is also the main cruise ship terminal for the region, where most of Vancouvers famous cruises to Alaska originate. The building was designed by architects Zeidler Roberts Partnership in joint venture with Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership and DA Architects + Planners. Canada Place can be reached via the SkyTrain line at the nearby Waterfront Station terminus or via West Cordova Street in Vancouver. The white sails of the building have made it a prominent landmark for the city, as well as drawing comparisons to the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia and the Denver International Airport in Denver, Colorado. The structure was expanded in 2001 to accommodate another cruise ship berth and in 2009/10, for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada Place served as the Main Press Centre.

Orpheum

The Orpheum is a theatre and music venue in Vancouver, British Columbia. Along with the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and the Vancouver Playhouse, it is part of the Vancouver Civic Theatres group of live performance venues. The Orpheum is located on Granville Street near Smithe Street in Vancouvers downtown core.

Pacific Centre

Pacific Centre is a shopping mall located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is operated by Cadillac Fairview Corporation. Based on the number of stores, most of which are underground, it is the largest mall in Downtown Vancouver with over 100 stores and shoppes. Anchor stores include Holt Renfrew, Apple Store, Harry Rosen, HM, Sport Chek and Atmosphere. In 2015, Nordstrom will open a new flagship store. The mall is directly connected to The Bay department store, Vancouver Centre Mall, two SkyTrain subway stations, and the Four Seasons Hotel a 5-star 385-room luxury hotel. The City of Vancouver approved an 578,000 sq ft. expansion of Pacific Centre, including retail premises that will extend to the street on both sides of West Georgia Street, and a direct link connecting the shopping centre with the new Vancouver City Centre SkyTrain station on Granville Street. The link opened in the summer of 2009 in conjunction with the opening of the Canada Line.

Royal Centre

Royal Centre is a skyscraper complex located at 1055 West Georgia Street in Downtown Vancouvers Financial District. The primary tenant of the complex is RBCs British Columbia headquarters. The tower, also known as RBC Tower or Royal Bank Tower, stands at 141 m and 37 storeys and was completed in 1973. The building is owned and managed by Brookfield Properties, a major North American commercial real estate company.

Scotia Tower

Scotia Tower is a prominent skyscraper located at 650 West Georgia Street in Downtown Vancouver. The 12th tallest building in the city, it stands at 138 m or 34 storeys tall and completed in 1977 and is a landmark skyscraper near the end of the central business district. The building houses Scotiabank operations for British Columbia and the underground Vancouver Centre, with its various shoppes and attendant street retail and theatres. The malls are linked to Pacific Centre and the Bay and a SkyTrain subway station via subterranean passages beneath Georgia and Granville Streets. The Georgia and Granville corner of the site was the former location of the Birks Store in Vancouver, an ornate Edwardian edifice that was torn down in 1974 to make way for construction of the Scotia Tower and Vancouver Centre. Birks was the first tenant in the new corner-retail location after the Centrees construction but has since moved to Granville and West Hastings; that location is now the main downtown store of London Drugs. The Georgia Street side of the Scotia Tower-Vancouver Centre was the location of the old Strand Theatre, the only one of Vancouvers Theatre Row not directly on Granville Street. That movie house was later replaced by the Vancouver Centre Cinemas in 1977.

Sinclair Centre

Sinclair Centre is an upscale shopping mall in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. It is located at 757 West Hastings Street between Granville and Howe streets. The centre comprises four buildings that were restored by Henriquez Partners Architects in 1986 at a cost of $38 million. The main post office was housed here from 1910 until the new one opened in 1958. The Post Office Building is in an Edwardian Baroque style, combining English and French influences. It features an atrium clock consisting of four 12-foot-diameter clocks built in 1909 and is the largest clock movement in Western Canada; the minute hands alone weigh 92 kilograms each. In addition to the mall, the building has a seven floor office tower occupied by the federal government. The buildings that comprise the centre are the Post Office, the handsome and architecturally esteemed Winch Building, the Customs Examining Warehouse, and the Federal Building . The mall is home to elite boutiques and has a food court. The complex was renovated in 1986 and renamed after former Vancouver MP James Sinclair.

TD Tower

TD Tower is located at 700 West Georgia Street in Downtown Vancouver and is connected to part of the Pacific Centre shopping mall. The skyscraper stands at 127 m or 30 stories tall and was completed in 1972. The building houses TD Canada Trust operations in British Columbia. When this tower was built, on the site of the former second Hotel Vancouver, its black-glass facing earned it the press sobriquet "the Black Tower", and with the white design of the adjacent Eatons building it was considered by some an architectural disaster. The first tenant in January 1972 was the recently formed law firm of McLaughlin, Holburn Beaudin on the 16th floor. The firm has remained a tenant since opening and currently occupying the topmost floors. With partner changes over time, it is now permanently named Alexander Holburn Beaudin Lang LLP. The building is currently the home of Corus Radio Vancouver, as well as a number of law firms, including Farris, Vaughan, Wills Murphy LLP and Alexander Holburn Beaudin Lang LLP. The TD Tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city.
