Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States; more specifically, between the province of Ontario and the state of New York. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie mostly on the Canadian side and the American Falls entirely on the American side, separated by Goat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls by Luna Island. The international boundary line was originally drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has long been in dispute due to natural erosion and construction. Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with a vertical drop of more than 165 feet . Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by vertical height and flow rate. The falls are 17 miles north-northwest of Buffalo, New York, and 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. Niagara Falls were formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation , and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean. While not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls are very wide. More than six million cubic feet of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost four million cubic feet on average. The Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Balancing recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 19th century.

Marineland is an themed amusement park and a zoological institute for both marine and land animals, in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Owing to its proximity to the falls and other natural park areas and its blend of animals and rides, it is one of the main tourist destinations in Niagara Falls, Canada.

American Falls

The American Falls is one of three waterfalls that together are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River along the Canada–U.S. border. Unlike the much larger Horseshoe Falls, of which two-thirds of the falls is located in Ontario, Canada, and one-third in the US state of New York, the American Falls is entirely within the United States and New York.

Horseshoe Falls

The Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls, as most of it lies in Canada, is part of Niagara Falls, on the Niagara River. Approximately 90% of the Niagara River, after diversions for hydropower generation, flows over Horseshoe Falls. The remaining 10% flows over the American Falls. It is located between Terrapin Point on Goat Island in the US state of New York, and Table Rock on the Ontario side of the falls. According to official U.S. Geological Survey maps, approximately two-thirds of Horseshoe Falls is located in Ontario, Canada with the remaining one-third in New York, United States of America.

Bridal Veil Falls

The Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. It is located on the U.S. side; Luna Island separates it from the American Falls and Goat Island separates it from the Horseshoe Falls. The Bridal Veil Falls faces to the northwest and has a crest 56 feet wide. Luna Island being very small, the Bridal Veil is similar in appearance to the American Falls, starting with a vertical fall of 78 feet, followed by the water violently descending the talus boulders to the Maid of the Mist Pool 103 feet below. The total vertical drop is 181 feet . The crest elevation of the Falls is 508 feet . The Cave of the Winds attraction allows visitors to walk up to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. A pedestrian bridge crosses from Goat Island to Luna Island several yards upstream from the crest of the falls. The waterfall has also been known in the past as Luna Falls and Iris Falls.

Bird Kingdom

Bird Kingdom, is located in the tourist district of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Previously the home of the Niagara Falls Museum, the building was re-opened as a free flying aviary in May 2003. It is now one of the largest indoor aviaries in the world, encompassing approximately 45,000 square feet, and it houses over 300 individual birds, the majority of which come from Australia, South America, and Africa. It also houses mammals, insects, and reptiles, and even an amphibian-the dyeing poison frog. Bird Kingdom has been voted Niagara Falls Attraction of the Year four times, and Trip Advisor Destination Winner for 2011 2012.

Marineland of Canada

Marineland (official name Marineland of Canada Inc. and marketing as MarineLand) is a themed amusement park and zoo for both marine and land animals, in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Niagara Falls. The park has been a centre of controversy over its handling of animals at the park. Between November 2016 and January 2017, 11 charges were laid against Marineland by Ontario's animal welfare agency because of its alleged mistreatment of animals. As of May 2nd, 2017, Marineland has lost its CAZA endorsement. The company has vowed to put the agency to the strictest proof in court.

Niagara SkyWheel

Niagara SkyWheel is a 175-foot tall Ferris wheel in the middle of Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Niagara SkyWheel is a Ronald Bussink Professional Rides designed R60 Giant Wheel, manufactured by Chance Rides and supplied by Chance Morgan. It opened on 17 June 2006, at a cost of $10 million. Its 42 Swiss-manufactured fully enclosed passenger cars can each carry eight people and are heated in the winter and air conditioned in the warmer months. The ride is approximately 12 to 15 minutes long, giving passengers views of the Niagara River, and the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls, and is open all year, from 9:00 am to 1:00 am.

Tower Hotel

The Tower Hotel, opened in 1962, is located in the Fallsview district of Niagara Falls, Ontario and was the first of the modern observation towers built near the brink of the Falls. It features an indoor observation deck, restaurant, wedding chapel, and hotel. From street level, the tower is 99 metres tall, however it is situated 160 metres above the falls. The tower assumed its present name in 2010 as a result of its most recent renovation, however as Minolta was the longest-tenured sponsor of the building it is frequently still known as the Minolta Tower among tourists and locals.

Niagara Gorge

Niagara Gorge is a 11 km gorge carved by the Niagara River along the US-Canadian border in New York and Ontario. It begins at the base of Niagara Falls and ends at the Niagara escarpment near Queenston, Ontario, where the falls originated about 12,500 years ago. The river has formed the gorge, and the Falls has receded upstream and south toward Lake Erie, by slow erosion of hard Lockport dolomite which is the surface rock of the escarpment combined with rapid erosion of relatively soft layers beneath it. The force of the river current in the gorge is one of the most powerful in the world. Because of the dangers this presents, kayaking the gorge has generally been prohibited. However, on isolated occasions, world class experts have been permitted to navigate the stretch.

Falls Incline Railway

The Falls Incline Railway, originally known as the Horseshoe Falls Incline is a funicular railway in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It is located beside Niagara Falls at the Horseshoe Falls. The line was built in 1966 for the Niagara Parks Commission by the Swiss company Von Roll. It adopted its current name in the 1980s. Originally built with open-air cars, it was rebuilt in 2013 with enclosed cars to permit year-round operation. Unlike the other incline railways at Niagara Falls, the Falls Incline was not built to descend into the Niagara Gorge below the falls. Instead it links the Table Rock Centre and Journey Behind the Falls, on the Niagara Parkway just above the falls to the higher level Fallsview Tourist Area, including the Minolta Tower, the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and several hotels. The Niagara Parks Commission claims that the funicular is the world's slowest. The Niagara Whirlpool is a natural whirlpool along the Niagara River located along the Canada–US border between New York and Ontario. The whirlpool is located in the Niagara Gorge, downstream from Niagara Falls. The whirlpool's greatest depth is 125 feet .

Cedar Island

Cedar Island is a small, uninhabited and elongated island located in the Niagara River near the Canadian shore, opposite the Table Rock observation area at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. The far south point of the island is often crowded by dozens of seagulls.

Maid of the Mist Incline

The Maid of the Mist Incline, originally known as the Clifton Incline, was a funicular railway in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. The line was built to convey patrons of the Maid of the Mist boat tour, and linked the foot of Clifton Hill to the boat dock below. The line was built, as the Clifton Incline, in 1894. It was 50 metres long, was electrically hauled, and passengers were carried in two small 12-seater cars. The track splits near the bottom to allow for cars to pass. A station is located near the top of the incline. The line was renamed as the Maid of the Mist Incline in 1973, without any change to the method of operation or capacity. The increasing size of the vessels used on the Maid of the Mist tour meant that more capacity was required, and the line was rebuilt between 1976 and 1977. When it reopened, it was served by new 24-seater cars which made the journey in 45 seconds. However even these proved inadequate for traffic, and the line finally closed in 1990 when it was replaced by a set of four elevators. Although the line has been closed since 1990 and is somewhat overgrown, both the track and the 1977 cars are still in situ.

Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is an observation tower that overlooks both the American Falls, New York, and the larger Horseshoe Falls, Ontario, from the Canadian side of the Niagara River.

Movieland Wax Museum of the Stars

Clifton Hill is one of the major tourist promenades in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The street, close to Niagara Falls and the Niagara River, leads from River Road on the Niagara Parkway to intersect with Victoria Avenue. The street contains a number of gift shops, wax museums, haunted houses, video arcades, restaurants, hotels and themed attractions. For visitors, particularly families and teenagers, it is a major amusement area and centre for night life. Over the years, the various properties on the hill have been bought, sold and renamed frequently. The street is divided between two primary property owners: the Harry Oakes Company (HOCO) and the Niagara Clifton Group.Comfort Inn, also part of Clifton Hill, closed in 2015 and was later demolished as part of a major development that would include the upcoming Niagara Speedway go-kart track, an extension of the Great Canadian Midway video arcade, a zombie-themed 4D ride, multiple snack stands, and a Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum expansion. The expansion began in early 2016 and is slated to be completed by Summer 2018.

Dragon Mountain

Dragon Mountain is a steel roller coaster located at MarineLand near Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada Built in 1983 by Arrow Huss, it was the tallest roller coaster in the world before the opening of Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point. Although Dragon Mountain reaches a maximum elevation of 186 ft, the first drop is only 80 ft. It covers 30 acres of land.

Niagara Falls Museum was a museum most notable for being the oldest Canadian museum , as well as for having housed the mummy of Ramesses I for 140 years before its return to Egypt in 2003. It was founded by Thomas Barnett of Birmingham, England and underwent a few vocational changes in its history.

Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory

The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is a butterfly zoo operated by the Niagara Parks Commission in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It is located about 10 minutes north of Niagara Falls on the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens School of Horticulture, which is 40 hectares in size. The conservatory was opened in December 1996 with a gift shop, 200-seat theater/auditorium room, and a climate-controlled greenhouse. The conservatory has over 2,000 tropical butterflies from over 60 different species. The conservatory glass dome is 1,022 square metres in size with 180 metres of paths inside the greenhouse portion, which has a wide variety of foliage. The conservatory can accommodate up to 300 visitors per hour. Since captive butterflies usually have a life span of 2–4 weeks, the conservatory imports up to 3,000 butterflies per month from world butterfly farms in Costa Rica, El Salvador, the Philippines, and Australia. Special netting along the inside of the glass dome keeps the butterflies from getting stuck to it and from dying from hypothermia. Butterfly food plants at the conservatory such as Lantana, Cuphea, Zinnia, Ixora, Liatris, and Pentas are replaced every 2–3 weeks because caterpillars have large appetites. Visitors who want the butterflies to land on them should wear bright clothes, move slowly, and wear perfume or cologne. Eurasian quails, turtles, goldfish, toads, and beetles help keep the insect population in balance. The Emergence area allows visitors to view the butterfly life cycle and produces over 45,000 butterflies annually. The species of butterfly at the conservatory include the Banded Orange, Blue Morpho, Common Mormon, Cydno Longwing, Doris Longwing, Gulf Fritillary, Julia, Lows Swallowtail, Monarch, Mosaic, Owl, Red Lacewing, Sara Longwing, and Small Postman.

Queen Victoria Park

Queen Victoria Park is the main parkland located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada opposite the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Established by a Provincial Park Act in 1885 and opened in 1888, the park is operated by the Niagara Parks Commission and is considered the centerpiece of the Niagara Falls recreational tourist area. The park is known for its outstanding flower displays of daffodils and roses in-season, with many of the plantings done in a carpet-bedding design. Queen Victoria Park is also the focal point for the annual winter Festival of Lights.

Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort

The Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Ontario opened publicly on June 10, 2004. This $1 billion complex overlooks the Horseshoe Falls and is one of the most prominent features of the Niagara skyline. The site was once the transformer station building for the Ontario Power Company at the foot of Horseshoe Falls. The casinos operations are handled by a five partner consortium Falls Management Group LP of Toronto.

Niagara Scow

The Niagara Scow (also called "The Old Scow") is the unofficial name of the wreck of a small scow that brought two men perilously close to plunging over the Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the Niagara Falls. The wreck can still be seen, upstream of the falls.

James G. Marshall House

James G. Marshall House is a historic home located at Niagara Falls in Niagara County, New York. It is a three-story Arts and Crafts style dwelling built in 1913 by the industrialist and inventor James G. Marshall . It was designed by prominent local architect Simon Larke, who also designed the Former Niagara Falls High School. In April 1994, it opened as a bed and breakfast. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It is located within the Park Place Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Dufferin Islands

Criminals Hall of Fame

The Criminals Hall of Fame Wax Museum was a wax museum on 5751 Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. One of many wax museums in the region, it was located at the top of Clifton Hill. The museum features forty wax statues of notorious criminals, from mobsters to serial killers. The museum was created in 1977 and closed late 2014 . In 2002, columnist Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette characterized it as "a cheesy little monument to brutality," while in 2005 the same papers Dennis Roddy called it "a garish little exhibit." In 2003, the Boston Herald dubbed it "tacky." In 2010, Doug Kirbys roadsideamerica.com noted in its review that the museum had "more gore than most horror wax museums and better lighting, too," which it took as "a good indication that this attraction is drawing enough of a crowd to pay its electric bill."

Whirlpool Aero Car

The Whirlpool Aero Car or Spanish Aero Car is a cable car located in Niagara Falls, Ontario that transports passengers over a section of the Niagara River referred to as the Niagara Whirlpool. The system was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and has been upgraded several times since 1916 . The system uses one car that carries 35 standing passengers over a one-kilometre trip.

Oak Hall

Oak Hall is a 37-room, three-story Tudor-style mansion built by American mining millionaire Harry Oakes located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, approximate 1/4 mile southwest of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The building has housed the offices of the Niagara Parks Commission since 1982, while the grounds contain a 9-hole golf course established in June 1966.

Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

Niagara Glen Nature Reserve is a nature reserve located near the Niagara Whirlpool along the Canadian side of the Niagara Gorge. It is one of the best preserved remaining example of Southern Ontarios original Carolinian forest. The park is operated by the Niagara Parks Commission, an agency of the Ontario government. The park features overlooks of the whirlpool and gorge as well as several hiking trails through the Carolinian forest. The nature reserve protects a pristine area of the Niagara Escarpment. The nature reserve is open to the public daily, as long as weather permits.

Navy Island

Navy Island is a small, uninhabited island in the Niagara River in the province of Ontario, managed by Parks Canada as a National Historic Site of Canada. It is located about 4.5 km upstream from Horseshoe Falls, and has an area of roughly 1.2 km2 . It was designated a national historic site in 1921 in recognition of its role in shipbuilding and the location of the short-lived Republic of Canada. The site is closed to the public, has no visitor facilities, and has not allowed camping since the expiration of a lease with the Niagara Parks Commission.
