South Brook Farm

South Brook Farm, also known as the Charles A. Higgins Estate and New Bolton Center for Veterinary Medicine, is a historic estate located in East Marlborough Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The original section of the house was built in 1717, and expanded in the 19th century. In 1940, it was modernized and enlarged by noted architect R. Brognard Okie in the Colonial Revival style. Also on the property are a former stable or carriage house transformed into a cottage and photographic studio; an English bank barn; early 20th century terra cotta silo; and one-story garage . It was originally built as the retirement residence of Caleb Pusey , an associate of William Penn and Quaker leader. The farm remained in the Pusey family until acquired by industrialist Charles A. Higgins in 1939-1940. He hired noted architect R. Brognard Okie to transform the property into a gentleman's estate. Since 1958, the house has been the centerpiece of the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary and animal research complex known as the New Bolton Center. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

New Bolton Center

New Bolton Center is the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s 700 acre campus in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It is home to one of the busiest large animal teaching veterinary clinics in the nation. Since 1958, it has been located at the former South Brook Farm. Founded in 1964 with contributions from equestrienne Esther du Pont Thouron and others, each year the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals (named for horseman George D. Widener, Jr.) sees more than 4,000 patient visits, and its Field Service sees more than 31,000 patient visits. In addition to its role as one of the nation’s finest equine surgical facilities, New Bolton Center encompasses hospital facilities for the care of large animals and livestock as well as diagnostic laboratories serving the agriculture industry and the monitoring of emerging infectious disease. Prior to the opening of "New" Bolton Center in 1952, the old Bolton Mansion in Levittown was the site of the farm for the School of Veterinary Medicine. New Bolton Center received nationwide media attention when Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro underwent surgery at the Widener Hospital for multiple fractures to one of his ankles, suffered while running in the Preakness Stakes on May 20, 2006. Dr. Dean W. Richardson performed the surgery on Barbaro. Despite the long recovery, Barbaro took a turn for the worse in January 2007 and was euthanized on the 29th of that month.

North American Plant Collections Consortium

The North American Plant Collections Consortium is a group of North American botanical gardens and arboreta that aims to improve the continents living plant collections, and enhance the availability of plant germplasm. The consortium is administered by the American Public Gardens Association from Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the USDA Agricultural Research Service. According to the consortiums web site, it has three strategic goals: Increase the number of NAPCC Collections to represent the major genera of ornamental plants found in APGA member gardens; Facilitate coordination of NAPCC plant collections; and Raise professional plant curation standards in public gardens. The consortium is intended to represent woody and herbaceous ornamentals, both native and exotic. The main objective for each consortium member is to assemble the most comprehensive possible group of plants within a particular taxon, collecting plants that are both taxonomically and genetically from different populations throughout the natural range of the plants.
