St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patricks Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, and seat of its archbishop, currently Denis Hart. In 1974 Pope Paul VI conferred the title and dignity of minor basilica on it. In 1986 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral and addressed clergy during his Papal Visit. The cathedral is built on a traditional east-west axis, with the altar at the eastern end, symbolising belief in the resurrection of Christ. The plan is in the style of a Latin cross, consisting of a nave with side aisles, transepts with side aisles, a sanctuary with seven chapels, and sacristies. Although its 103.6 metres length is marginally shorter than that of St Marys Cathedral, Sydney, St Patricks has the distinction of being both the tallest and, overall, the largest church building in Australia.

The Johnston Collection

The Johnston Collection is a museum of fine and decorative art in East Melbourne, Victoria. The museum complex incorporates the house museum, Fairhall, as well as a gallery and reference library. The WR Johnston Trust was founded in 1986 as the result of a bequest by the late William Robert Johnston, a prominent 20th century antiques dealer, and collector of Georgian, Regency and Louis XV furniture, 18th and 19th century porcelain, and paintings ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The Collection, which first opened in 1990 as part of the Spoleto Festival, operates as an independent not-for-profit museum. Today, the Collection incorporates over 1200 objects, and plays host to regular rearrangements and exhibitions. It is open to the public every weekday, with three tours per day conducted by volunteer guides. Because the Collection is situated in a residential area, the address is not available to the public, and visitors are transported by courtesy bus from a nearby collection point, the location of which is advised at the time of booking.

Cooks' Cottage

Cooks Cottage is located in the Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne, Australia. The cottage was constructed in 1755 in the English village of Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, by the parents of Captain James Cook, James and Grace Cook. It is a point of conjecture among historians whether James Cook, the famous navigator, ever lived in the house, but almost certainly he visited his parents at the house. In 1933 the owner of the cottage decided to sell it with a condition of sale that the building remain in England. She was persuaded to change "England" to "the Empire", and accepted an Australian bid of £800, by Russell Grimwade, as opposed to the highest local offer of £300. The cottage was deconstructed brick by brick and packed into 253 cases and 40 barrels for shipping on board the Port Dunedin from Hull. Cuttings from ivy that adorned the house were also taken and planted when the house was re-erected in Melbourne. Grimwade, a notable businessman and philanthropist, donated the house to the people of Victoria for the centenary anniversary of the settlement of Melbourne in October 1934. The cottage immediately became a popular tourist attraction. In 1978 further restoration work was carried out on the cottage. An English cottage garden has been established around the house, further adding to its period reconstruction. Very few of the items in the house are from the Cook family, but all are representative furnishings of the period.

ICI House

ICI House is a 20-storey office building in East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It was the tallest building in Australia upon completion in 1958, and the first to break Melbourne's long standing height limit. It was one of the earliest fully glazed commercial skyscrapers in Australia. The move from low to high-rise office buildings changed the profile, shape and landscape of Australia's major urban centres forever. It symbolised progress, modernity, efficiency and corporate power in postwar Melbourne and was being constructed at the time of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics when the city was being showcased on the world stage. ICI House was at the forefront of the high-rise boom in Australia's cities in the second half of the Twentieth Century. The building's design, by Sir Osborne McCutcheon followed the international trend for multi-storey buildings which was being pioneered in the United States with the United Nations headquarters. Detail and documentation of the building's design was managed by Douglas Gardiner who was a partner of BSM. Built between 1955 and 1958 ICI Building was one of 22 major new multi-storey office buildings which sprang up in Melbourne in the second half of the 1950s. Its 19 storeys broke through the previous legal limit of 11 to 12 storeys, resulting in Melbourne becoming the first Australian city to change its height limits. In earlier times, most Australian office buildings occupied their entire blocks. However, Plot ratio urban planning resulted in the modern free-standing high-rise and its surrounding landscaped gardens and car park introduced the idea of creating a balance between a building's height and public amenities. The building made headlines for many years after initial construction as panes of glass frequently fell to the street below. It is one of the few post-war office buildings to be found on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Eastern Hill Fire Station

Eastern Hill Fire Station is the central fire station of Melbourne, Australia, located in on the corner of Victoria Parade and Gisborne Street, opposite St Peter's, Eastern Hill, one of the highest points in the city of Melbourne. The building has been recognised as historically significant by the Heritage Council of Victoria and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The station was begun in 1891 and opened on 3 November 1893, as the headquarters and city fire station for the newly formed Metropolitan Fire Brigade. It was designed by architecture firms Lloyd Taylor & Fitts, and Smith & Johnson, who both won the competition, and combined to produce this striking Australian Queen Anne style building. The building contained living quarters, stables, workshops, and offices. The watchtower was initially manned 24 hours a day. Firefighters lived on the premises until the 1970s. In 1972 a new station was begun next door, designed by Bates Smart McCutcheon in the Brutalist style, with the fire trucks now exiting onto Gisborne Street instead of Victoria Parade. The new building and refurbished old station was opened on 8 March 1979. Parts of the old building are still used for offices, while the Fire Services Museum of Victoria now occupies the majority of the bottom floor of the old station. The Museum contains exhibits pertaining to the Old MFB Board, the Chief Fire Officer, a showcase of fully refurbished fire appliances, a display of International Firefighting garments and a dedication to the MFB's sister firefighting organisation, the Country Fire Authority. Eastern Hill Fire Station is known as Fire Station 1 inside the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, also known as the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, is a major centre for cancer treatment, professional oncologist training and oncology research in Melbourne, Australia. It is named after Sir Peter MacCallum. The centre is Australia’s only public hospital dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education. It is also one of the few cancer treatment facilities in the world which has a fully integrated clinical and laboratory program situated alongside a hospital. This facilitates the translation of research findings into clinical outcomes within the single site. Research programs at the centre include the Australian Cancer Research Foundation Cancer Cell Biology Program and the ACRF Victorian Centre for Functional Genomics in Cancer. The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre offers much in the way of integrated services, including medical oncology and radiation oncology facilities and links with allied health services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech therapy and social services.

Epworth Freemasons

Established in 1937, Epworth Freemasons (formerly the Freemasons Hospital), located at 166 Clarendon St in East Melbourne, was a practical expression of the work of Freemasonry in the Victorian community. It is now run by Epworth Healthcare. It is a non-government, not-for-profit, charitable institution providing a range of inpatient and ambulatory care services including: Women's and related health services including maternity, women’s health and breast clinics, breast and gynaecological surgery and IVF. Surgical services including general surgery, urology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and ENT. Comprehensive cancer care covering diagnosis, surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In October 2006 the Hospital was purchased by ING Real Estate, which immediately leased the hospital to Epworth Healthcare. One immediate effect was the merging of two emergency departments, the previous Freemason's Emergency was closed while Epworth Richmond's still operates. The now Epworth Freemasons Hospital still operates as a hospital. The site is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database.

Bionics Institute

The Bionics Institute is a biomedical research institute focusing on medical bionics. The Institute’s three core research themes are bionic hearing through cochlear implants, bionic vision through stimulation of the optic nerve and neurobionics through deep brain stimulation. The Bionics Institute is located in Melbourne, Australia. The Institute is dedicated to translational research leading to clinical outcomes. Recent examples of clinical trials the Institute has been involved in include deep brain stimulation of a patient with intractable obsessive compulsive disorder; completion of the Bionic Vision Australia trial of the prototype bionic eye with a trial of the next generation device to commence in 2015; and ongoing evaluation of a novel stimulation method to improve speech perception in five cochlear implant patients.

St Vincent's Private Hospital

St Vincent's Private Hospital (formerly known as St Vincent's & Mercy Private Hospital) is a hospital in Victoria of Australia that is located across three campuses in the Melbourne suburbs of Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Kew. Each campus is designated St Vincent's Private Hospital, and the suburb (Fitzroy/East Melbourne/Kew). The private hospital was owned by the catholic Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of Mercy, as a result of a joint venture that commenced in 1998. The merger, of facilities owned by two different religious orders, was the first of its kind. The facility is now owned by the catholic Sisters of Charity. The Sisters of Charity and Sisters of Mercy, had run the St Vincent's Private and Mercy Private hospitals independently, for more than 70 years before merging. St Vincent's Private Hospital purchased Vimy House Private Hospital in 2008, creating the third campus. Across the three sites, St Vincent's Private has a capacity of over 500 beds. Major specialities include interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, obstetrics, neurosurgery and orthopaedics, paediatrics, ENT, hand surgery, oncology and general surgery. St Vincent's Private Hospital also runs a comprehensive social accountability program. Approximately 300 meals per week are supplied to St Mary's House of Welcome and The Wellington Community Centre. The hospital funds an ACU scholarship for nursing students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage, and provides two scholarships for refugee children in the community to complete their education at a local private College. The hospital provides support to the Children First Foundation, Mercy Care and The Way. Staff are also given the opportunity to apply for community leave in order to undertake volunteer service in a charity.
