Embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa

The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canada is the embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa, Canada. It is located at 240 Argyle Avenue, in downtown Ottawa. It promotes Afghan-Canadian relations, performs diplomatic, political, economic, defence, cultural, media and other bilateral activities. The Embassy also provides consular services. Afghanistan also maintains a consulate in Toronto. The Embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa Established in April 2002 for the first time, and started the Consular Services on September that year. The Embassy was represented by the following diplomats: 1-April 2002: Mr. M. Sharif Ghalib, Minister Counsellor, Chargé d'Affaires. 2-October 2002 to November 2003: H.E. Embassy of Ukraine

The Embassy of Ukraine in Ottawa is Ukraine's diplomatic mission in Ottawa, Canada. Canada was the first western nation to recognize Ukraine's independence on December 2, 1991. The existence of a large Ukrainian-Canadian community has led to continued close relations between the two nations. The Ukrainian embassy was established on May 3, 1992. Originally in rented apartments, then it moved to a heritage building at 331 Metcalfe Street, that was purchased with the aid of donations from Ukrainian-Canadians. The current home of the embassy chancery is 310 Somerset Street West. This building was originally a mortgage and investment office. In 1991, it was purchased by the New Democratic Party for two million dollars and became their party headquarters. After the NDP lost official party status in Parliament in the 1993 election and found itself deeply in debt, it decided to sell the property. The Ukrainians, whose delegation had grown considerably, bought it in September 1994. The original embassy on Metcalfe is still used as a consular building. Since March 21, 1993, Ukraine has also maintained a Consulate General in Toronto.

Place Bell

Place Bell is one of the tallest buildings in Ottawa, Canada (the fifth tallest in the downtown area) with a height of 94 metres (308 ft). The 27-storey building stands on Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa, and is distinguishable by its wide stature (the building is unusually large in dimensions considering its height, presumably to avoid having a 50+ storey building greatly overshadow the Peace Tower). The building was built by Olympia and York in 1971 as the Ottawa headquarters of Bell Canada. The site originally contained a number of small commercial buildings and the large Gloucester Street Convent. Original plans called for the complex to be much larger and include the entire block to the north. This would have entailed demolishing several heritage buildings, including the First Baptist Church. The main level contains a shopping concourse with a number of businesses. The rear of the structure contains a parking garage. In the 1980s the owners sued the city after salt placed on the roads by the city corroded the steel structure of the garage and it had to be closed for several years. Bell, which remains the building's largest tenant, owned the building until 1998, when it was sold to TrizecHahn for $17 million. After the purchase, TrizecHahn conducted significant renovations. In 2002 it was bought by H&R Real Estate Investment Trust for $21.1 million. Place Bell was featured prominently in the opening title sequence of the Ottawa-made TV series You Can't Do That On Television as a building labelled "Television Network", where a school bus pulls up to the front door and a number of children flood out and into the building, trampling the doorman (played by Les Lye).

Ottawa Central Station

Ottawa Central Station is the primary inter-city bus terminus in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada's national capital city. It used to have the same management as Montreal's major bus terminal, Gare d'autocars de Montréal before the latter was purchased by the Quebec government. On February 7, 2011, the terminal operations were sold to Corporate Customer Service Limited, a sub-contractor of Greyhound Canada. Corporate Customer Service formed a new company, Ottawa Central Station Inc., to manage the terminal. On September 1, 2011, Corporate Customer Service Ltd. handed over the head lease to Greyhound, who in turn negotiated and signed a long-term lease with the property's owner. Ottawa Central Station Inc. remains as an agency within a Greyhound terminal. The building and the lot is owned by Crerar Silverside Corporation. The station is located at 265 Catherine Street, between Kent Street and Lyon Street, just north of Highway 417, the primary expressway through Ottawa. The station includes free Wi-Fi, an ATM, vending machines and a Mr. Sub restaurant featuring Country Style hot beverages and baked goods. Protect Guard Services operates as the station's main security. Ideal Control Systems and First Student offices are located on the second level of the terminal. The station's operating hours are daily from 5:00 am to 2:30 am. The parcel department's hours are Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday/holidays 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The majority of buses serving the station are operated by Greyhound Canada. Destinations from Ottawa include Toronto (with connections to the United States), Montreal (with connections to the United States, Quebec City and the Maritimes), Syracuse (with connections to New York City and Philadelphia), and Sudbury (with connections to the Prairies, British Columbia and Northern Canada). On January 21, 2016, Ontario Northland Motor Coach Services began operating between Ottawa Central Station and Sudbury to better serve passengers connecting to and from Northern Ontario communities. On February 29, 2016, Autobus Gatineau, a subsidiary of Autobus Maheux, began operating between Ottawa Central Station and Grand-Remous after Greyhound reduced service to Fridays and Sundays only. On December 15, 2008, new security measures by Greyhound came into place. All Greyhound passengers are subject to random screening prior to boarding the bus, which includes the use of wand metal detectors and searching carry-on items. Any passenger refusing to be searched is not permitted to travel.
