Maidan Nezalezhnosti

Maidan Nezalezhnosti is the central square of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine. One of the citys main squares, it is located on Khreshchatyk Street in the Shevchenko Raion. The square has been known under many different names, but often it is called simply Maidan . In the 19th century, the square contained buildings of the city council and noble assembly. Since the start of Ukraines independence movement in 1990, the square has been the traditional place for political rallies, including four large-scale radical protest campaigns: the 1989 student "Revolution on Granite", the 2001 "Ukraine without Kuchma", the 2004 Orange Revolution, and the 2013-2014 Euromaidan. Besides, the Maidan is a traditional point for several non-political events such as the citys Christmas Tree and the various festivities annually held on the Ukraine Independence Day and Kiev City Day.

Saint Sophia's Cathedral

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev is an outstanding architectural monument of Kievan Rus. The cathedral is one of the citys best known landmarks and the first patrimony on territory of Ukraine to be inscribed on the World Heritage List along with the Kiev Cave Monastery complex. Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower, the House of Metropolitan, and others. In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. One of the reasons for that move was the fact that both "Sofia Kyivska" and Kiev Pechersk Lavra are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Program as one complex, while in Ukraine the two were governed by different government entities. In Ukrainian the cathedral is known as Sobor Sviatoyi Sofiyi or Sofiyskyi sobor . In Russian it is known as Sobor Svyatoi Sofii or Sofiyskiy sobor . The complex of the Cathedral is the main component and museum of the National Preserve "Sophia of Kiev" which is the state institution responsible for the preservation of the Cathedral complex as well as four other historic landmarks across the nation.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra

Kiev Pechersk Lavra or Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery which gave its name to one of the city districts where it is located in Kiev. Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1051 the Lavra has been a preeminent center of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery complex is considered a separate national historic-cultural preserve, the national status to which was granted on 13 March 1996. The Lavra is not only located in another part of the city, but is part of a different national sanctuary than Saint Sophia Cathedral. While being a cultural attraction, the monastery is currently active. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on 21 August 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community. Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kiev-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Metropolitan Onuphrius.

Kiev TV Tower

The Kiev TV Tower is a 385 m-high lattice steel tower built in 1973 in Kiev, Ukraine, for radio and television broadcasting. It is the tallest freestanding lattice steel construction in the world. The tower in Oranzhereina Street is not open to the public. Construction began in 1968 and finished in 1973 at a cost of approximately $12 million. Made of steel pipe of various diameters and thicknesses, the structure weighs 2,700 tonnes. The central pipe, or core, where the elevator is located, is 4 metres in diameter and made of pipe that is 12 mm thick. It sits on a four-legged base that is about 100 metres tall. Atop the base is an enclosed level which houses microwave transmitting and receiving equipment. At about 200 metres is a second enclosed level that houses television and FM transmitters, as well as a control and maintenance shop. This second level is the elevators terminus. The tower is unique in that no mechanical fasteners such as rivets are used in the structure: every joint, pipe and fixture is attached by welding. The tower was first designed for Moscow, then the Soviet capital. But Moscow authorities preferred a more "solid" type of tower which was eventually built . Later, when Kiev needed its own tower, the project was reintroduced. The Soviet government ordered the engineers to shorten the tower by almost 30%, so as not to be as tall as the Moscow one.

St. Nicholas Military Cathedral

St. Nicholas Military Cathedral, popularly known as The Great Nicholas, was one of the military cathedrals of the former Russian Empire, overlooking the Dnieper River in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. This pentacupolar Ukrainian Baroque building was designed by Osip Startsev at the bidding of Hetman Ivan Mazepa to serve as the main church of St. Nicholass Poustinia traditionally associated with Askolds Grave. The church was consecrated in 1696. It was famed for its dazzling gilded icon screen commissioned by Mazepa. A free-standing Rastrelliesque bell tower was completed in the mid-18th century. The Russian Imperial Army became the churchs patron in 1831. A set of cannons near the building proclaimed its military associations. In 1934, the Soviets blew up the cathedral, replacing it with a Pioneers Palace. Struggle for a reconstruction of a temple is growing. The president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko supported idea of restoration of a temple. Now Divine services are carried out at open-air near to a place where there was a temple earlier.

Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II

The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II is a memorial complex commemorating the German-Soviet War located in the southern outskirts of the Pechersk district of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, on the picturesque hills on the right-bank of the Dnieper River. The museum has moved two times before ending up in the current location where it was ceremonially opened on May 9, 1981, by the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. On June 21, 1996, the museum was accorded its current status of the National Museum by the special decree signed by Leonid Kuchma, then the President of Ukraine. It is one of the largest museums in Ukraine centered on the now famous 62-meter tall Motherland statue, which has become one of the best recognized landmarks of Kiev. The museum has been attended by over 21 million visitors.

St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral

The St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral is the second Roman Catholic cathedral built in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Today the building is shared between the Roman Catholic Church of Ukraine and the National House of Organ and Chamber Music. Another Catholic church, the St. Alexander Roman Catholic Cathedral, is the oldest Catholic church in the city and is located near the European Square behind the Ukrainian House in Kyiv. It was constructed from 1899–1909 and was built in a Gothic type construction, by Kyiv architects V. Gorodetsky and E. Sala. Historically, it belonged to the Latin Rite Catholic community. It stands at vulytsia Chervonoarmiyska in Pechersk Raion next to the National Linguistic University of Kyiv between the National Sports Complex Olimpiysky and the Railroad station Kyiv-Tovarny.

St. Panteleimon's Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Pantaleon or St. Panteleimon is a large Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the Kievan neighbourhood of Theophania. It shares similarities with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn and is considered a high point in Russian Revival ecclesiastical architecture. It was built to a Russian Revival design by Yevgeny Yermakov between 1905 and 1912. The building is pentacupolar, with the massive black central dome and the four tent-like domes on the corners, as well as low galleries which run continuously around the building. The outer walls are covered with a mazy web of tracery. The cathedral was intended to serve as the main church of the Kievan Monastery of St. Panteleimon, which originated as a branch, or skete, of St. Michaels Golden-Domed Monastery. It was closed for worship and thoroughly looted in the 1920s and was damaged in World War II. The hollow shell of the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990s and has been restored as the main church of a nunnery. The other church building of the convent conforms to the cathedral in style.

Andriyivskyy Descent

Andriyivskyy Descent is a historic descent connecting Kievs Upper Town neighborhood and the historically commercial Podil neighborhood. The street, often advertised by tour guides and operators as the "Montmartre of Kiev", is a major tourist attraction of the city. The descent, 720 metres in length, is constructed of laid cobblestones. It winds down steeply around the Zamkova Hora hill, ending near the Kontraktova Square in the Podil. The Andriyivskyy Descent is marked by a couple historic landmarks, including the Castle of Richard the Lionheart, the 18th century baroque Saint Andrews Church, famed Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakovs house, and numerous other monuments. Recent talk of the descents reconstruction has been going since 2006, when a local grassroots organization aimed at saving the Andriyivskyy Descent collected more than 1,000 signatures to petition local authorities to take action on the descents reconstruction. On June 23, 2009, the Kiev City Council administration approved the reconstruction of the Andriyivskyi Descent, which was officially announced a year earlier by Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky. The exact timeline for reconstruction has not yet been adopted, although the reconstructions budget has been drafted in the citys 2010 budget.

Florivsky Convent

For the eponymous monastery in Moscow, see Ascension Convent The Ascension Convent in the Kievan neighbourhood of Podil, better known as the Florivsky or Florovsky Monastery , originated in the 16th century as the wooden church of Sts. Florus and Laurus. Its buildings occupy the slopes of the Zamkova Hora. Address: Frolovskaya ulitsa, 8. The convent greatly expanded at the time of the Great Northern War, when Peter the Great ordered the demolition of the old Ascension Convent on Pechersk Hill with the aim of building an arsenal there. When run by Ivan Mazepa's mother, the older convent had amassed much property. Its riches and nuns were transferred to the Florovsky Convent. The main church, or katholikon, is a notable example of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. Its first stone was laid in 1722. Ten years later, the three-domed building was dedicated to the feast of the Ascension of Christ. Its Neoclassical bell-tower is of later construction. The wooden buildings of the monastery were entirely destroyed by fire in 1811. Only the katholikon and a 17th-century refectory were left standing amid the ashes. It was Andrey Melensky, a Neoclassical architect from Kiev, who was in charge of the convent's reconstruction. The convent's notable residents included Princess Natalia Dolgorukova, one of the first Russian women writers. It was closed in 1929 but reopened after the Germans entered the city in 1941. Several buildings have since been taken over by industrial enterprises.

Mariyinsky Palace

Mariyinsky Palace is the official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine in Kyiv and adjoins the neo-classical building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. It is a Baroque palace on the hilly bank of the Dnieper River. The palace was ordered to be constructed in 1744 by the Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, and was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the most famous architect working in the Russian Empire at that time. One of the students of Rastrelli, Ivan Michurin, together with a group of other architects, completed the palace in 1752. Empress Elizabeth, however, did not live long enough to see the palace. The first royal figure to stay in the palace was Empress Catherine II, who visited Kiev in 1787. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the palace was the main residence of Governors-General. In the early 19th century, the palace burned down in a series of fires. Roughly half a century later, in 1870, Alexander II of Russia had the palace reconstructed by the architect Konstantin Mayevsky, using old drawings and watercolours as guide. It was then renamed after the reigning Empress Maria Alexandrovna. By her wish, a large park was established off the southern side of the palace. The palace was used as a residence for visiting members of the imperial family until 1917. During the years of the Russian Civil War in 1917-20, the palace was used as the Kiev revkom headquarters, particularly during the Kiev Bolshevik Uprising. In the 1920s the building belonged to an agricultural school, soon after which it became a museum. The Mariyinsky was badly damaged in World War II, and restored at the end of the 1940s. Another major restoration was completed in the early 1980s.

Klov Palace

The Klov Palace is the seat of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in Kiev. The building takes its name from Klov, a neighbourhood of Pechersk District where it is situated. Architect Stephen Kovnir supervised the construction of the building elements which is thought to have been designed by Johann-Gottfried Shedel and Pyotr Neyelov. The Baroque residence was constructed between 1752 and 1756 with funds provided by Kiev Pechersk Lavra. The Russian royals were expected to stay at the palace during their visits to the monastery, as they did in a wooden palace that had preceded it. The architects are thought to have been Johann-Gottfried Schedel and Pyotr Neyelov. The actual construction was supervised by Stepan Kovnir. The main hall has the plafond frescoed in 1760. A formal garden was laid out around the palace. The palace was never visited by any royals, however, and it was not long before it fell into ill repair. Catherine II of Russia, when passing through Kiev in 1787, preferred Mariyinsky Palace for her residence. It was gutted by a fire in 1858 and was rebuilt soon after with the addition of an upper storey and the side wings. The palace burnt down in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. A restoration process was undertaken in the 1970s.

Mother Motherland

The Motherland Monument or, and more commonly referred to as, Rodina-Mat is a monumental statue in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The sculpture is a part of the Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II, Kiev. Designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich, the stainless steel statue stands 62 m tall upon the museum building with the overall structure measuring 102 m and weighing 560 tons. The sword in the statues right hand is 16 m long weighing 9 tons, with the left hand holding up a 13 by 8 m shield with the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. The Memorial hall of the Museum displays marble plaques with carved names of more than 11,600 soldiers and over 200 workers of the home-front honored during the war with the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Hero of Socialist Labor. On the hill beneath the museum, traditional flower shows are held. The sword of the statue was cut because the tip of the sword was higher than the cross of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Church of the Tithes

The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin was the first stone church in Kiev. Originally it was built by the order of Grand Prince Vladimir the Great between 989 and 996 by Byzantine and local workers at the site of death of martyrs Theodor the Varangian and his son Johann. It was originally named the "Church of Our Lady", in honor of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The church was ruined in 1240 during the siege of Kiev by Mongol armies of Batu Khan. Vladimir set aside a tithe of his income and property to finance the churchs construction and maintenance, which gave the church its popular name. On an initiative of the Metropolitan of Kiev Eugene Bolkhovitinov, the church was rebuilt in the mid 19th century, but in 1928 it was once again destroyed by the Soviet regime.

A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden

The A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Ukraine, located in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. In 1839 the Kiev Taras Shevchenko University opened its own botanical garden. The botanical garden is 22.5 hectares, with 8,000 plant species, including 143 recorded in the Ukraines Red Book of Rare Species. Garden is famous for its exotic plants: here is the biggest collection of drought-resistant plants – succulents among the countries of the former Soviet Union. Building of greenhouse, which was built for the largest and the oldest palm trees in Northern Eurasia, long time had been considered one of the highest in the world. In 1935, the garden was named after the academician and botanist Aleksandr Vasiljevich Fomin, who directed the garden for years. The vestibule of the Kiev Metro station Universytet, is located on the northern edge of the garden, which was opened in 1960..
