Top Attractions in Tulum

Sistema Dos Ojos

Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system located north of Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The exploration of Dos Ojos began in 1987 and still continues. The surveyed extent of the cave system is 82 kilometers and there are 28 known sinkhole entrances, which are locally called cenotes. Dos Ojos lies broadly parallel to and north of the Sac Actun cave system. Dos Ojos has remained in the top ten, if not the top three, longest underwater cave systems in the world since its discovery in the late 1980s. Dos Ojos contains the deepest known cave passage in Quintana Roo with 119.1 meters of depth located at "The Pit" discovered in 1996 by cave explorers who came all the way from the main entrance some 1,500 meters away. The deep passages include the "Wakulla Room", the "Beyond Main Base passage", "Jills room" and "The Next Generation passage". In August 2012 Dos Ojos was connected through a dry passage to Sistema Sac Actun. With March 2014 the total length of the combined system measures 319.05 kilometers . Dos Ojos is an anchialine cave system with connections to naturally intruding marine water and tidal influence in the cenotes. The coastal discharge point of this cave system have not yet been humanly explored through to the ocean, although large volumes of groundwater were demonstrated by dye tracing to flow towards Caleta Xel-Ha, a nearby coastal bedrock lagoon. The name Dos Ojos refers to two neighbouring cenotes that connect into a very large cavern zone shared between the two. These two cenotes appear like two large eyes into the underground. The original cave diving exploration of the whole cave system began through these cenotes. The Dos Ojos underwater cave system was featured in a 2002 IMAX film, Journey Into Amazing Caves, and the 2006 BBC/Discovery Channel series Planet Earth. Parts of the Hollywood 2005 movie The Cave were filmed in the Dos Ojos cave system. Water temperature is 25 °C or 77 °F throughout the year and the maximum depth near the Dos Ojos cenotes is approximately 10 meters . The water is exceptionally clear as a result of rainwater filtered through limestone, and there being very little soil development in this region since the limestone is very pure.

Sistema Sac Actun

Sistema Sac Actun is an underwater cave system situated along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula with passages to the north and west of the village of Tulum. Exploration started from Gran Cenote 5 kilometers west of Tulum. The whole of the explored cave system lies within the Municipality of Tulum . In early 2007, the underwater cave Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich was connected into and subsumed into Sac Actun making it the longest surveyed underwater cave system in the world for some months. Sac Actun measures 230.8 kilometers in January 2011) and is second surpassed by Sistema Ox Bel Ha at 256.7 kilometers . Since early 2007, these two caves frequently exchanged the title of the longest underwater cave system in the world. Including connected dry caves and Sistema Dos Ojos makes Sistema Sac Actun with 319 kilometers the longest cave in Mexico and the second longest worldwide.

Xel-Ha Park

Xel-Ha Park is a commercial aquatic theme park and ecotourism development located on the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, in the municipality of Solidaridad. It is part of Xcaret Experiencias Group which also owns Xplor Park and Xcaret Park. It is situated within the "Riviera Maya", a region promoted as a tourism corridor along Highway 307. It is approximately 240 kilometres to the north of Chetumal, and 122 kilometres south of Cancun. The park is named after the site of Xelha, an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, part of which is located within the lands leased to the park. The Maya site of Tulum is nearby, some 13 kilometres to the south. From 2010 to 2014, Xcaret Experiencias has been recognized as one of The Best Mexican Companies, a recognition sponsored by Banamex, Deloitte México and Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich

Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich is an extensive water filled cave system connected with the Caribbean Sea via a coastal spring called a variety of names, including Casa Cenote for the restaurant located nearby, but also Cenote Manati, or Cenote Tankah. The explored cave system extends to approximately 8 kilometers inland from the coast. It is located 16.5 kilometers south of Akumal . For more than ten years the system was extensively explored by dedicated cave divers starting from Cenote Nohoch Nah Chich in 1987. Mike Madden of CEDAM Dive Center established the CEDAM Cave Diving Team principally to conduct annual exploration projects to focus on cave exploration, while a number of cave research efforts were logistically supported, with contributions in the fields of karst hydrogeology, water chemistry, microbiology, ecology, and archaeology. The technique of establishing jungle exploration camps at newly found cenotes and cave entrances was developed and refined during many cave exploration projects, thus allowing cave diving exploration effort to continue more efficiently at the edges of the known cave. The main camp of exploration became Cenote "Far Point Station", located 6 kilometers from the coast, and 2.8 kilometers further inland than Main Base Camp situated at the main Nohoch Nah Chich Cenote entrance. During the Nohoch 1997 expedition the 60 kilometers of total explored cave passage mark was surpassed. In early 2007, Nohoch Nah Chich included 36 cenotes and had a recorded length of 67 kilometers when it was connected into and subsumed into the 14 kilometers longer Sistema Sac Actun by the Sac Actun Exploration Team . This portion of the system is now called the "Nohoch Nah Chich Historical section", where with 71.6 meters also the greatest depth of the entire system was reached at "The Blue Abyss".
