Top Attractions in Northenden

Church of St Wilfrid

The Church of St Wilfrid in Ford Lane, Northenden, Manchester, England, is an Anglican church of late medieval origins which was substantially re-built in the 19th century by J. S. Crowther. The church was designated a Grade II* listed building on 25 February 1952. The origin of St Wilfrid's is possibly Saxon, with a mention in the Domesday Book of a "church Norwardine: Ranulf and Bigot from Earl Hugh." The core of the current church is 15th century. Crowther was commissioned to undertake repairs in 1872 but found that the medieval church was substantially without foundations. He therefore undertook complete rebuilding, except for the Perpendicular tower, in 1873-6. Crowther also prepared plans for the re-building of the tower, but these were not followed through and reconstruction was undertaken instead. The interior contains some original medieval screens, including one above the doorway in the south chapel which depicts "a pair of tumblers and a monkey sitting on a drum. The tumblers can be read in two ways, so that they really do seem to tumble." The Victorian stained glass is complete, donated either by the Tatton family of nearby Wythenshawe Hall, or the Watkins family of Rose Hill, Northenden Some may be the work of the significant stained glass designer, Charles Eamer Kempe. There is a good selection of funerary monuments "to members of the Tatton and Egerton families including: Robert Tatton , aedicule with putti; Mrs Egerton , urn with carved flower garland; William Egerton , woman lying on sarcophagus; and to Thomas Worthington , mourning woman with 3 sarcophagi under weeping willow." In the large graveyard is the tomb of Sir Edward Watkin, Victorian railway magnate, as well as those of many of the Tatton family. The churchyard also contains war graves of eight service personnel of World War I and three from World War II.

Rose Hill

Rose Hill in Longley Lane, Northenden, Manchester, England, is a 19th-century Victorian villa, most notable as the home of Sir Edward Watkin, "railway king and cross-channel visionary". The house was designated a Grade II* listed building on 11 April 1991. Sir Edwards father, Absalom Watkin, bought the house in 1832. Absalom Watkin was a wealthy cotton merchant and a diarist, recording life in early Victorian Manchester. Sir Edward extended the house in the late 19th century with "a single storey loggia of the finest ashlar with Doric order pilasters ... toy battlements appear elsewhere. The interiors are especially fine." The house has spectacular stained glass: "The windows and doors all have very fine and imaginative art nouveau stained glass, with rose trees, birds and other flowers and plants and employing clear glass as part of the design." Sir Edward made his fortune as the managing director of four separate railway companies at a time of vast expansion of the railways in mid-Victorian Britain. He also founded the Channel Tunnel Company in 1875, which undertook the first large-scale attempt to link England and France. He began construction of a larger version of the Eiffel Tower on the site of the current Wembley Stadium, but this was abandoned after a height of 155 feet had been reached. In the 20th century, Rose Hill became a childrens home, which closed in the 1990s and was later the subject of a wide-ranging investigation into child abuse in Manchesters care homes from the 1960s to the 1980s. In the 1970s a major landscape painting by the American artist Frederick Edwin Church was discovered at Rose Hill. The Icebergs had been bought by Sir Edward in the late 19th century for a reported £10,000 and subsequently forgotten. Rose Hill was converted into flats in 2003 and most of the grounds built-over with private housing.

Wythenshawe Bus Garage

Wythenshawe Bus Garage is a Grade II* listed building in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, England. Designed by Manchester City Architects Department under G. Noel Hill, and completed in 1942, the garage was a pioneering example of its type of construction. It was the second-largest reinforced concrete shell roof structure to be constructed in England. The building’s structure was particularly innovative for its time. Its concrete arches have a span of 165 ft from side to side, are 42 ft high and spaced 42 ft apart. The tensile concrete shell roof between these concrete arches is just 2.5 inches thick and is daringly punctured by large rooflights. Wythenshawe Garage proved to be the model for much larger buildings using the concrete shell roof structure technique, which was an economic method of achieving large uninterrupted roof spans. Originally designed to garage 100 double-decker buses, the building on its completion was immediately commandeered by the Ministry of Aircraft Production for the building of Avro Lancasters in support of Britain’s Second World War efforts. The building is now in private ownership and is used for warehousing.
