First Baptist Church of Cornish

The First Baptist Church of Cornish, now known as Trinity Church, is a historic church at Meriden Stage Road and NH 120 in Cornish Flat, New Hampshire. This two-story wood frame structure was built in 1803, and is the town's oldest church building. Originally located Harrington and Parsonage Hill Roads, it was moved to its present location in 1818. It was originally built in the style of a colonial meeting house, with square pews and a gallery; the pews were removed during alterations in 1845-46, at which time the gallery level was built over into a second story. The building's Federal styling appears to have been inspired by the publications of Asher Benjamin. The town purchased the building in 2009. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Salmon P. Chase Birthplace

Salmon P. Chase Birthplace was the birthplace and childhood home of Salmon P. Chase. It is located about 8 miles north of Claremont on New Hampshire Route 12A. The 2 1⁄2-story wood frame house was built c. 1790, and is a multi-section structure in an L shape. The main block is five bays wide and two deep, with a centered entry that has Greek Revival pilasters on the central entry and on the corners. This block faces west, and two narrower sections extend east from the rear. The first of these sections is also 2 1⁄2 stories, with two chimneys. The easternmost section is 1-1/2 stories, and was originally connected to a barn. The house is believed to be well-preserved, but there is no documentary evidence of its appearance in the early 19th century, and it is known to have been moved across the street from its original site in about 1848. The house's significance arises because it is the only known building associated directly with the life of Salmon P. Chase . Chase was born in this house, and lived here until he was eight, when he was sent to live with relatives in Ohio after his father died. Chase had a long and distinguished legal and political career, serving as Governor of Ohio and contending with Abraham Lincoln for the 1860 nomination as the Republican Party candidate for president. Lincoln appointed Chase to be Treasury Secretary, a post he held during the American Civil War, and from which he strongly advocated abolitionist positions as a Radical Republican. Lincoln appointed Chase Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1864, a post he held until his death. The house was declared a National Historic Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1975.

Trinity Church

Trinity Church is an historic church located at 833 Route 12A in Cornish, New Hampshire, in the United States. It began in 1793 as the Episcopal Society and became Trinity Episcopal Church in 1795. Instrumental in its establishment was Philander Chase, son of one of the three founders of Cornish and then a student at Dartmouth College. Chase later became the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Illinois, and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Construction of the church began in 1803 and was finished in 1808. On February 1, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its historic graveyard is known as Trinity Cemetery. After decades of being vacant, the church was reopened in 2004 as Trinity Anglican Church.

Blow-me-down Brook

Blow-me-down Brook is a 12.8 mile long stream located in western New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Connecticut River, which flows to Long Island Sound. Blow-me-down Brook begins in the village of Cornish Flat, located in the northeastern part of the town of Cornish, New Hampshire. It flows northwest into the town of Plainfield, then takes a zig-zag course generally west to the Connecticut River, reentering Cornish shortly before its end. In Plainfield, it passes the villages of Hell Hollow and Mill Village and also comes close to Plainfield's town center. In its lower course in Cornish, the brook passes the village of Squag City and Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site. The Blow-Me-Down Covered Bridge crosses the brook at Squag City. The section of brook which passes alongside or through the St. Gaudens property was humorously called "Blow-me-up Brook" by St. Gaudens himself. The watershed of Blow-me-down Brook extends to Croydon Mountain (sometimes known as Grantham Mountain and as Spruce Ball by most Cornish residents) in the northwestern corner of the town of Croydon, just east of the town's boundary with Cornish. The brook was dredged from a small dam at the northeastern edge of Cornish Flat to the bridge that crosses State Route 120. This was done sometime before 1945 in order to avoid flooding. However, at least once, when a cloudburst occurred on Spruce Ball, the brook did overflow its banks and flooded part of State Route 120 but without severe damage to property.
