Marion Castle

The Marion Castle, also known as Terre Bonne, is located at 1 Rogers Road in the Shippan Point section of Stamford, Connecticut. It was built in 1914 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 1, 1982. Marion Castle was built, owned and occupied by the family of Frank Marion until his death in 1963. The home was designed by the noted New York City-based architectural firm of Hunt & Hunt, which was owned at the time by Joseph Howland Hunt and Richard Howland Hunt. Marion Castle was designed in the style of a French chateau completed in either 1914 or 1916 . Frank J. Marion was a movie industry pioneer who with partners in the Kalem Company produced one-reelers shown at nickelodeons and later silent films. Since 1998 the pile has been owned and occupied by Thomas L. Rich, a Stamford real estate developer well known in the area. Rich has allowed the usage of the home extensively for non-profit community events.

Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens

The Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens contains 91 acres of parkland, gardens, landscapes, and hiking trails, that focus on the regional plants, ecology and character of Southwestern New England. The Arboretum is open and accessible to the public every day of the year. It is located at 151 Brookdale Road in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. The Arboretum started in 1913, when Dr. Francis A. Bartlett, an eminent dendrologist and founder of the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, acquired "30 acres more or less" of North Stamford woodland to use as his residence, training school and research laboratory for his company. Over the years he assembled a large number of plant specimens on the property from all over the world. In 1965, when the research laboratory moved to North Carolina, the Stamford site, then covering more than 60 acres, was purchased by the State of Connecticut and designated the Connecticut State Arboretum. In 1993, the land and overall operation of the Arboretum were transferred to the University of Connecticut at Stamford. In 2001, the land was transferred to the City of Stamford and operations were transferred to the Bartlett Arboretum Association an independent non-profit organization. The Bartlett Arboretum Association continues to operate the grounds today. In 2006 the Arboretum began numerous research programs, continuing the tradition of research begun by Dr. Bartlett nearly a century earlier. Current research focuses on local plant ecology such as floristics and herbivory responses of Connecticut Forests, and the ecology and evolution of tropical plants, particularly the Araceae. This work has led to several published research papers by staff in the past few years. In January 2007, the Arboretum started offering a landscaping class for Spanish-speaking landscapers. Although taught in English, key words and expressions are translated into Spanish. The landscapers are taught subjects such as proper planting, mulching and pruning, and safety rules, and they receive a certificate at the end of the course. The Herbarium of the Bartlett Arboretum, open to the public Monday Thursday and by appointment, is a rapidly expanding collection of over 3500 specimens. The Arboretum plans a doubling of this collection by 2009. While most specimens are from the Northeastern United States, the collection also houses material from the Southeastern United States and Adjacent Mexico, the Caribbean, Amazonian Peru, the former Soviet Union,and Africa . This collection includes approximately 2,500 species of vascular plants, and 1,000 species of Bryophyte. The collection currently houses one type specimen.

Hoyt-Barnum House

The Hoyt-Barnum House at 713 Bedford St. Stamford, Connecticut, was built around 1699, and is the oldest house in Stamford. The builder was a descendant of one of the original founders of Stamford. The large chimney stack of the Hoyt-Barnum House is made of field stone, laid up with clay, animal hair, and straw. The house is braced timber frame construction or post and beam. The foundation is of field stone. The west room of the house is plastered. The east room is whitewashed and the hearth room walls are sheathed with wood paneling, thus showing the various finishing techniques incorporated into the house during its evolution. The house is now owned and maintained as a museum by the Stamford Historical Society. Open by appointment for tours, the house features 17th and 18th century furnishings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

John Knap House

The John Knap House, also known as Samuel Knap House, is a historic house at 984 Stillwater Road in Stamford, Connecticut. The house is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a large central chimney. It was built c. 1705 by a Capt. John Knap and was owned by his son, Lt. John Knap. The house was bought from the Lt. John Knaps estate by his son Samuel Knap in 1765. It is believed to be the second oldest house in Stamford. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Old Town Hall (Stamford, Connecticut)

The Old Town Hall is located in the Downtown section of Stamford, Connecticut. It is located at the southwest corner of Main and Atlantic Streets, occupying a portion of a triangular block bounded on the south by Bank Street. The rest of the block is occupied by the modern portion of Stamford's city hall. The building is an elegant Beaux Arts structure, designed by the New York City firm of Mellon and Jossely and built in 1905. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1972.

Fort Stamford Site

The Fort Stamford Site, site of Fort Stamford, is a public park at 900 Westover Road in Stamford, Connecticut. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It is the site of the archaeological remnants of a military earthworks erected during the American Revolutionary War.

Main Street Bridge

The Main Street Bridge formerly carried Main Street over the Rippowam River just outside downtown Stamford, Connecticut. It was designed and manufactured by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company in 1888. It is a two-span wrought iron lenticular truss bridge, each span 60 feet long, although there are supporting piers every 12 feet feet. The abutments and central pier are cut granite and other stone, faced in concrete. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, at which time it was the only lenticular truss bridge on a major artery in the state. The bridge is only open to pedestrian traffic.

Turn-of-River Bridge

The Turn-of-River Bridge, also known as Old North Stamford Road Bridge, is a single-span lenticular pony truss bridge built by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company in 1892. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It formerly brought the Old Stamford Road across the Rippowam River, but is now open only to pedestrian traffic, as the road ends shortly before the bridge. The bridge uses the design patented by William O. Douglas in 1878 for a lens-type truss bridge, and is built out of wrought and cast iron, with pin connections, and has a concrete deck. It rests on stone abutments, and has a total span of 53 feet . It is one of only about twenty lenticular truss bridges remaining in the state. It is now open only to pedestrian traffic.

Cove Island Park

Cove Island Park is an 83 acre park and beach in the Cove section of Stamford, Connecticut, located on Long Island Sound. It is a popular spot for Stamford residents to rollerblade, bike, walk, barbecue, and ride the tram around the island. The city’s Park Commission has loosened and restricted park access to out-of-town visitors over time. As of summer 2014, Stamford residents with valid Stamford car registrations can buy a season pass for $20 at Government Center. Non-residents and non-pass holders pay $20 for a day pass.

United States Post Office–Stamford Main

The Stamford Main Post Office, also known as US Post Office–Stamford Main, is a historic post office building at 421 Atlantic Street in Stamford, Connecticut. The building, built in 1916 is prominent sited in downtown Stamford, being in view of the Connecticut Turnpike, and it is unusual for its Italianate style of architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The building was considered for resale and demolition in 2013. A federal judge ruled against the plan which may set a precedent to help preservationists save post offices nationwide. The National Trust for Historic Preservation cited the site as one of ten historic sites saved in 2013.

Stamford Transportation Center

Stamford, officially known as the Stewart B. McKinney Transportation Center or the Stamford Transportation Center, is a major railroad station in the city of Stamford, Connecticut, serving passengers traveling on Metro-North Railroads New Haven Line, Amtraks Northeast Corridor, and Shore Line East. The station is 33 miles from Grand Central Terminal. Just northeast of the station is the split for the New Canaan Branch. A few Shore Line East trains terminate at Stamford during the morning rush hour, and originate there in the evening. United Airlines codeshares with Amtrak to provide service out of Stamford station to the train station at Uniteds Northeast hub, Newark Liberty International Airport. As such, the train station has the IATA Airport Code ZTF. Downtown Stamford is directly north of the station.

The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford is a diocese of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, covering parishes in New York State and New England in the United States. The diocesan headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, includes St. Volodymyr Cathedral, a chancery at 14 Peveril Road in Stamford, St. Basil College, and a Ukrainian museum. The diocese publishes The Sower, a monthly newsletter with articles written in both English and Ukrainian, from its offices in Stamford. The Eparchy of Stamford is a suffragan diocese of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, which has authority over all Ukrainian Catholic dioceses and Ukrainian Catholics in the United States.

Fish Church

The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, is a church in Stamford, Connecticut designed by architect Wallace K. Harrison. Nicknamed Fish Church, for its unusual shape, it is a unique example of modernist architecture, and an architectural landmark. Its 260-foot-tall Maguire Memorial Tower holds a 56-bell carillon.

Church of the Holy Name

The Church of the Holy Name is a historic church at 305 Washington Boulevard in Stamford, Connecticut in use by the Convent of the Holy Name of Jesus. It is located across the street from the Parish of the Holy Name of Jesus, which occupies a 1925 church building. The Holy Name Rectory, also known as the Duncan Phyfe House, at 4 Pulaski, home of furniture designer Duncan Phyfe appears to be included in the listing. It is a distinctive house that became the rectory in 1909. The 1852 structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is a historic church at 1271 Washington Boulevard in Stamford, Connecticut. Built in 1860, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as St. Andrew's Protestant Episcopal Church. Its church and parish hall are fine examples of Gothic architecture designed by Henry Hudson Holly.

St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church

St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church is a historic church located at 628 Main Street in Stamford, Connecticut. The church is an English Gothic Revival structure, built in 1891 to a design by William Potter. It has buttressed stone construction, with a compound-arch entry and a large rose stained-glass window. The associated parish house, also a Gothic Victorian structure, was designed by Richard Upjohn and built in 1869-72.

Unitarian-Universalist Church

The Unitarian-Universalist Church is a historic church at 20 Forest Street in Stamford, Connecticut. It is a modestly-sized Gothic Revival structure, built out of fieldstone, brick, and granite, in 1870 to a design by Stamford architect Inslee Gage. While most of its exterior windows are stenciled in imitation of stained glass, it has two genuine stained glass windows in the choir loft that are between 400 and 700 years old, and were brought over parishioner Thomas Crane. The church rectory, built 1880, is a handsome Victorian Gothic structure with early elements of Queen Anne styling. The church complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Zion Lutheran Church

The Zion Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church building at 132 Glenbrook Road in Stamford, Connecticut. The red brick Gothic Revival structure was built in 1925 by a German immigrant congregation founded in 1897. It is the city's only red brick church. The main facade is dominated by a square tower on the right, which rises only to the height of the roof gable on the left. The gable stands above a large quadruple window set in a slightly pointed arch, which stands above the main entrance, which is recessed in an arched opening. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Long Ridge Village Historic District

The Long Ridge Village Historic District is a historic district in the city of Stamford, Connecticut. The district, located in rural northern Stamford near the border with New York, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Although the district includes a few early 19th-century properties, the area was most heavily developed between 1850 and 1920, and was a local center of shoe manufacturing until it was bypassed by railroads, sending the business nearer to downtown Stamford. The district extends along Old Long Ridge Road, and includes several property on adjacent Rock Rimmon Road. There are 34 historically significant houses, and two churches. Significant contributing properties include: St. Francis Episcopal Church, 503 Old Long Ridge Road, (see #11 in photo set accompanying NRHP document) Hickford Marshall House, 528 Old Long Ridge Road (see accompanying photo #12)

Josiah Wilcox House

The Josiah Wilcox House is a historic house at 354 Riversville Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is a 2 1⁄2-story wood-frame structure with a front-gable roof, and a series of extensions to the rear. The building's most prominent feature is its impressive Greek Revival temple front, consisting of four Ionic columns supporting a triangular gable pediment. The house has been little-altered since the late 19th century, and is one of Greenwich's finest Greek Revival buildings. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Gustavus and Sarah T. Pike House

The Gustavus and Sarah T. Pike House is a historic house at 164 Fairfield Avenue, in the southwestern section of the city of Stamford, Connecticut is a Queen Anne style house built in 1880. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It is architecturally significant as a good example of a Queen Anne style house in Stamford, and also an excellent example of pattern book application. The building follows a pattern book design by H. H. Holly. It includes machine-made spindle and other detailing that only then became cost-effective with then-modern manufacturing.

Mianus River State Park

Treetops is the former estate of torch singer and actress Libby Holman. It forms the southernmost part of Mianus River Park and is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as the Mianus River State Park. The larger Mianus River Park, which straddles the border of Stamford and Greenwich, is composed of Treetops , Mianus River and Natural Park (110 acres owned by the Town of Greenwich), and Mianus River Park (187 acres owned by the City of Stamford). In 2001, a successful effort was made by local citizens to save the estate from development. As a result, 94 acres of pristine grounds were preserved as a state park, with a further 11 acres around the Treetops mansion covered by a conservation easement. Many rooms in Holman's mansion have been restored by its current owners. These include the studio of Holman's third husband Louis Schanker, a renowned abstract artist. In 2006, the Treetops Chamber Music Society’s annual concert series made Louis Schanker's studio its home.

Downtown Stamford

Downtown Stamford is the central business district of the city of Stamford, Connecticut, USA. Also known as "Stamford Downtown." It is an economically thriving area of the city, with major retail establishments, a shopping mall, a university campus, the headquarters of major corporations and fortune 500 companies, as well as other retail businesses, hotels, restaurants, offices, and entertainment venues. In recent years more housing has been constructed in the neighborhood including high-rise residential buildings, and more is planned. With transportation widely seen as one of the biggest challenges facing the Economy of Stamford, Downtown has become an important transportation hub, as well as a business hub for lower Fairfield County. For example, it is an area within walking distance of the Metro-North train station, which is one of the busiest on the New Haven Railroad Line. The Downtown area has been the heart of Stamford, Connecticut since colonial times. Much of the history of Stamford took place there. Most of the southern and central portions of Downtown have been designated as historic districts, listed as the Downtown Stamford Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. In recent years, new development has consumed much of the Downtown area, with the additions of new high-rise buildings and office towers such as the new 35-story Trump Parc Stamford, parks such as the new Mill River Park development project, and housing such as the new 17-story Highgrove Condominium Residences. Other development projects include new student housing at the UCONN Stamford branch, residential housing, and the massive planned Ritz-Carlton Stamford development, which will include two 39-story hotel/condominium towers. The project is currently on hold due to the economic downturn in 2008. The city also plans to make improvements to the Atlantic Street underpass beneath the New Haven Line railroad tracks just east of the Stamford Transportation Center in order to alleviate a traffic bottleneck. The improvements are also meant to allow quicker evacuation of areas of the South End if disaster strikes. The project received a $245,000 earmark in the federal budget passed in December 2007.

South End of Stamford

The South End of Stamford, Connecticut is a rapidly growing neighborhood located at the southern end of the city, just south of the Downtown neighborhood. It is expected to be greatly changed with redevelopment over the next decade. The South End is a peninsula bordered by Interstate 95 to the north and almost totally by water on all other sides, with few streets linking it to neighborhoods to the east and west. It contains some industrial tracts, several old factory buildings, many small homes and apartment buildings, and a number of office buildings. Most of the neighborhood has been designated as the South End Historic District which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

C. J. Starr Barn and Carriage House

The C. J. Starr Barn and Carriage House is an historic estate outbuilding, located on the grounds of the former Sacred Heart Academy on Strawberry Hill Road in Stamford, Connecticut. It is a large 1-1/2 story wood frame structure with elegant Italianate scrolled woodwork on the exterior, with a smaller barn joined to a larger building that originally functioned as a carriage house. They were built c. 1860 by C. J. Starr has part of a larger country estate, of which these are the only surviving buildings. The estate was given to the Sacred Heart Academy, which has done sensitive restoration of the exterior of the structure; its interior has been converted into a gymnasium and other facilities. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 14, 1979.

Suburban Club

The Suburban Club is a historic clubhouse at 6 Suburban Avenue/580 Main Street in Stamford, Connecticut. It is a three story brick structure, topped by a flat roof which has a parapet and balustrade ringing it on three sides. The interior features elegant woodwork. The building was one of the first commissions by architects George F. Shepard and Frederick B. Stearns) who worked together until 1950 on many projects. It is architecturally significant as a Neo-Federal work in Stamford, and historically significant as one of the few buildings of the period to survive in downtown Stamford. The Suburban Club, founded in 1890, was a major social center for the city's elite until its closing in 1935. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Shippan Point

Shippan Point is the southernmost neighborhood in Stamford, Connecticut, located on a peninsula in Long Island Sound. Street names such as Ocean Drive West and Lighthouse Way reflect the neighborhood's shoreline location. It is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city, with about 1100 homes . Many of the community's large homes overlook the water and have private beaches. Bordering Shippan Point to the northeast is the Shippan neighborhood of Stamford, and farther east the East Side neighborhood. To the west of Shippan Point, separated from it by a canal, is the South End neighborhood, which is currently in planning phases for a major redevelopment. Running down the middle of the peninsula, Shippan Avenue is the main road of the community. Several of the cross streets end in private beaches owned by neighborhood associations. Some local historians say "Shippan" means "the shore where the sea begins." but others say the meaning of the Indian name is lost.

Stamford Cone

The Stamford Cone is a 14 metre high structural artwork in the shape of a cone built as a landmark feature for the headquarters building of UBS AG in Stamford, Connecticut. The structure, which entirely consists of stained glass by British artist Brian Clarke, was designed by architects Skidmore, Owings Merrill and engineered by Dewhurst MacFarlane Partners. It was completed in 1999 at a cost of over $1 million.

Octagon House (Stamford, Connecticut)

The Octagon House was a historic house at 120 Strawberry Hill Avenue, on the edge of the Glenbrook section of Stamford, Connecticut. It was one of a number of octagon houses in the United States, built during a fad in buildings of that shape from the late 1840s to the 1870s. The octagonal portion of the house was concrete, with external scoring to imitate ashlar. The use of concrete as a building material was also promoted by Orson Squire Fowler, the primary mover behind the octagon house fad. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was destroyed by fire in 1985.

Agudath Sholem Synagogue

The original synagogue building was later converted into a Christian church building, the Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. It's one of multiple synagogues considered in a study of NRHP eligibility.
