American Helicopter Museum

The American Helicopter Museum Education Center is located at 1220 American Boulevard, West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States. The transport museum focuses on the history, science and technology of rotary wing aviation. The collection contains over 40 civilian and military autogyros, convertiplanes and helicopters, including some early generation models. The museum also has an extensive research library, the Renzo Pierpaoli Memorial Library, which contains documents, artifacts, films, and memoirs that museum members can use. The museum strives to restore and display historic aircraft and chronicle the origin and development of rotary wing aircraft. The museums exhibits chronicle the efforts of pioneers like Harold Frederick Pitcairn, Mr. W. Wallace Kellett of Kellett Autogiro, Arthur M. Young and Frank Piasecki, and today it continues to record the new and ever expanding role of the U.S. helicopter industry. The exhibits span the history of rotary wing aircraft from the earliest rotorcraft to the latest developments in tiltrotors, and AHMEC is the only museum in the world currently displaying a V-22 Osprey.

Thomas Massey House

The Thomas Massey House is a brick and stone colonial house, located on Lawrence Road near West Chester Pike in Broomall, Pennsylvania. The brick section was created by Thomas Massey, a Quaker, in 1696 as an addition to an earlier wooden house. Thomass son Mordecai Massey likely tore down the wooden house and built the first stone addition during the 1730s. A stone walled kitchen was added in the early nineteenth century with a second story added about 1860. The house was donated to Marple Township in 1964 to avoid destruction. The Thomas Massey House is one of the oldest English Quaker homes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is on the National Register of Historical Places, and the Historical American Building Survey. Thomas Massey was born in the village of Marpoole in Cheshire, England. He landed in America on September 29, 1683 at the age of twenty, disembarking from the ketch "Endeavor" at Chester as an indentured servant to Francis Stanfield. His master similarly provided transportation to America for seven other indentured servants. When Thomas worked off his indenture, he received 50 acres of land from his master and another 50 acres from William Penn. In 1692, at age 29, he married 22 year old Phebe Taylor, who had arrived in America at age 13 with her family on the same ship as Massey. Together they had seven children. Thomas died in 1707 or 1708 and Phebe remarried two years later. The house remained in the Massey family until 1925, and was used as a farmhouse into the 1930s when a furnace and electrical wiring were added. When the land around the house was developed into suburban housing, the Massey House was used for storage and painting. In 1964 the Massey House was on the verge of demolition when a descendant, Lawrence M.C. Smith bought the house and 1-acre of ground, and gave it to the Township of Marple for restoration. Restoration was completed in ten years. During the restoration, evidence of a walk-in-fireplace and beehive oven was discovered. These features have been reconstructed and are in use today. The house is furnished with 17th and 18th century furniture and is open to the public for tours between 1 and 4 Sunday afternoon beginning with the last weekend in April and ending the last weekend in October.

Cope's Bridge

The Copes Bridge is a stone arch bridge which carries Strasburg Road across the East Branch Brandywine Creek in West Bradford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located at 39°57′31.9″N 75°39′19.3″W. It is in the Taylor-Cope Historic District. Before the construction of a bridge here, the site was known as Taylors Ford. The original bridge at the site was probably timber, built about 1770, and funded by subscription. This was replaced by another wooden bridge in 1789. A petition to the Court of Chester County in 1804 complained of the decay of the bridge, and asked the county to erect a stone bridge instead. The bridge was built in 1807 and cost $26,911.03 It continues to carry traffic today.

Bank of Chester County

Bank of Chester County is a historic two-story bank building located in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, the first bank to be chartered in the county. Following the failure to renew the charter of the Bank of the United States in 1811, states received responsibility over the banking systems within their jurisdiction. Although an initial proposal was rejected by the state legislature in 1813, a 41-bank proposal was passed the following year. An early bank building was utilized in West Chester beginning in 1814 at the Record Office, though the bank was relocated in 1818 to a building across the street, present-day 13 High Street. Following a proposal for a new site in 1835, a bank, to be built at 17 High Street, designed by noted architect Thomas Ustick Walter . It was built in 1836 in the Greek Revival style at the cost of $33,000, and features a portico with four Doric order columns; the bank was subsequently altered in 1874, 1905, and 1928. The previous building has since been rented to numerous individuals, although it still houses outdated equipment no longer used by the bank. The current building is occupied by Wells Fargo. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, located in the West Chester Downtown Historic District.

Barclay House

Barclay House, also known as the Joshua Hartshorne Estate, North Hill, and The Barclay, is a historic home located in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The original section was built in 1866-67, and believed to have been designed by noted architect Addison Hutton . It was a 2 1⁄2-story, brick dwelling in the Italianate style. It was expanded to three stories with the expansion of 1935-36. Also added at that time was a three-story connecting block, three-story west block, and one-story north block. The house was also renovated in the Colonial Revival style. The north block was expanded to two stories in 1998. Also on the property is a contributing carriage house built in 1869. It was converted to a residence in 1925. It was built as a single family residence, but converted to a Quaker boarding home for the elderly in 1935-1936. The boarding home closed at this location in 1997. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
