Plimoth Plantation

Plimoth Plantation, founded in 1947, is a living history museum in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA, that shows the original settlement of the Plymouth Colony established in the 17th century by English colonists, some of whom later became known as Pilgrims. They were among the first people who immigrated to America to avoid religious persecution and to seek religious separation from the Church of England. It is a not-for-profit museum supported by admissions, contributions, grants and volunteers. The re-creations are sourced from a wide variety of first and second records, accounts, articles and period paintings and artifacts, and the museum conducts ongoing research and scholarship, including historical archaeological excavation and curation locally and abroad. In the 1627 English Village section of the museum, interpreters have been trained to speak, act and dress appropriately for the period. At Plimoth Plantation they are called historical interpreters, and they interact with their strange visitors in the first person, answering questions, discussing their lives and viewpoints and participating in tasks such as cooking, planting, blacksmithing and animal husbandry. The 1627 English Village loosely follows a time line, chronologically representing the calendar year 1627 from late March through November, depicting day-to-day life and seasonal activities as well as featuring some key historical events such as funerals and special celebrations.

Jabez Howland House

The Jabez Howland House is a historic house at 33 Sandwich Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The oldest portion of this two-story wood frame house was built by Jacob Mitchell in 1667, and purchased by Jabez Howland, son of Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley Howland, two of the original Pilgrims. John and Elizabeth Howland lived in Jabez Howlands home after their own house burned. John Howland died in 1674 and Elizabeth lived there until the house was sold in 1680 and Jabez Howland moved to Rhode Island. Elizabeth moved to the home of her daughter, Lydia Browne, in Swansea, where she died in 1687. The Jabez Howland House was owned as a private residence until 1915. Extensive restoration of the property took place in the 1940s to return it to its 17th century appearance. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Pilgrim John Howland Society owns and operates the house as a historic house museum that has been restored and decorated with 17th-century period furnishings. The house is open for tours from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

Old County Courthouse

The Old County Courthouse is an historic court house on Leyden Street and Market Street in the Town Square of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Built in 1749, the two story wood frame building is believed to be the oldest wooden courthouse in the United States; it stands on the site of the first courthouse built by Plymouth Colony settlers, and may incorporate elements of a 1670 building. It is five bays wide and three deep, with a center entry flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters, and topped by a gabled pediment. It was built by Peter Oliver, and initially served as both a courthouse and as town offices. It was converted to solely municipal use in 1821, and had a myriad of municipal functions since then. In the 1970s it was converted into a museum. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is now known as the 1749 Court House and Museum, and is open from June to September with exhibits of early Plymouth history.

Plymouth Antiquarian House

The Plymouth Antiquarian House is an historic house museum at 126 Water Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts owned by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society. The house was built in 1809 for William Hammatt, a New England sea captain. The Hedges, a family of entrepreneurs, purchased the house in 1830 and lived there until 1919. The house was originally located on Court Street but was moved to Water Street by the Antiquarian Society in 1919. It is open during the summer months. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Richard Sparrow House

The Richard Sparrow House is a historic house at 42 Summer Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts and the oldest surviving house in Plymouth. The house was built around 1640 by Richard Sparrow, an English surveyor who arrived in Plymouth in 1636. He was granted a 16-acre tract of land in 1636 on which the house was later built. Sparrow moved to Eastham in 1653. The Richard Sparrow House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The house is now operated as a house museum and art gallery.

Mayflower House Museum

The Mayflower House Museum is an 18th-century period historic house museum in Plymouth, Massachusetts operated by The Mayflower Society, also known as the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. The Society purchased the Edward Winslow House in 1941. The mansion home was originally built in 1754 by the great-grandson of Edward Winslow, third Governor of Plymouth Colony. The mansion contains 18th century period decorations and furnishings. The offices and library of the Society are located behind the mansion.

Pilgrim Memorial State Park

Pilgrim Memorial State Park comprises two monuments in Plymouth, Massachusetts: Plymouth Rock and the National Monument to the Forefathers. Closely related to these memorials is the Myles Standish Monument State Reservation which can be seen across the Plymouth Bay in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, these sites are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

First Parish Church in Plymouth is a historic Unitarian Universalist church at the base of Burial Hill on the town square off Leyden Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Founded in 1620 by the Pilgrims in Plymouth, it is the oldest church congregation in the United States in continuous operation.

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and Parsonage

The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and Parsonage is an historic church and parsonage at 6 Sever Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The church is a modest 1-1/2 story wood frame structure, with transitional Greek Revival-Italianate styling, and was apparently built c. 1840 and used as a gymnasium. It was purchased by the local African Methodist Episcopal congregation and consecrated in 1870. The parsonage house is a vernacular 1-1/2 story wood frame house located about 20 feet behind the church; it was built in 1895. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Cole's Hill

Cole's Hill is a National Historic Landmark containing the first cemetery used by the Mayflower Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The hill is located on Carver Street near the foot of Leyden Street and across the street from Plymouth Rock. Owned since 1820 by the preservationist Pilgrim Society, it is now a public park.

Priscilla Beach Theatre

Priscilla Beach Theatre , located in the Manomet section of Plymouth at Priscilla Beach, was one of the original "barn" theatres in America. It was founded in 1937 by Dr. Franklin Trask. His wife, Agnes, became PBT's first artistic director. In addition to the 200-seat barn theatre, the original complex included several cottages, residences, dormitories, a mansion, carriage house and athletic field. The unique "learn-by-doing" training at PBT offered thousands of young acting students the opportunity to learn nearly every aspect of theatre training from fencing, dance and directing to make-up, lighting and set design. During the 1940s and 1950s, PBT featured well-known guest stars in student productions. These luminaries included Edward Everett Horton, Veronica Lake, Charlie Ruggles and Gloria Swanson. During this era, as many as 150 actors and actresses were in residence, usually performing in one play during the evening, while rehearsing another play during the day. Also, many famous students grew from a rising crop of young talent, including Paul Newman, Robert MacNeil, Estelle Parsons, Pat Carroll, Sandy Dennis, Mike Todd, Jr., Dan Blocker, Jean Seberg, poet Daisy Aldan and Jan Scott, Emmy Award-winning art director. During the 1960s, James Lonigro (stage name Geronimo Sands), replaced Mrs. Trask, becoming PBT's new artistic director, a position he still holds today. During his tenure, a new breed of talent emerged from the rigorous summer-stock training ground at the famous theatre school. This group includes Rob Reiner, Al Brooks, Andre Bishop (founder of Playwrights Horizons and Artistic Director of Theatres at Lincoln Center), news legend Andy Lack (former president of NBC News, producer of "60 Minutes", former CEO of Sony BMG and current CEO of the Bloomberg LP multimedia group), Curtis Sliwa (founder of the Guardian Angels), Jennifer Coolidge, Kitty Winn and Corey Carrier. During the 1970s, PBT was leased to Tufts University and, under the direction of Tony Award-winning producer Mitch Maxwell, saw Peter Gallagher on the barn stage. Author and composer Rick Besoyan wrote "Little Mary Sunshine" while at PBT. Entertainer Mickey Rooney cited PBT as being the inspiration for the story and motion picture of "Babes in Arms", in which he starred alongside Judy Garland. Robert MacNeil praises Priscilla Beach Theatre on the popular PBS program, "Do You Speak American?" for helping him manage his Canadian accent. PBT alumni have won (at least): four Academy Awards (Oscars), nine Tony Awards, three SAG Awards, four Golden Globes, six Golden Laurel Awards, a People's Choice Award, three New York Film Critics' Circle Awards, two Cannes Film Festival Awards, 15 Emmy Awards and, is represented by five stars on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. In 2013, the Priscilla Beach Theatre was purchased by Bob and Sandy Malone with the intention to restore the property and the barn. In the following two years, the barn was renovated and restored, with the first production scheduled to go on in July 2015. In the large main house, what was once the actor's dining hall has been converted into a small black box theatre. It is in this space where the tradition of stagecraft training continues to this day. For several years, PBT has focused its educational drive toward an even younger group of acting students, including children. In addition to on-site workshops and events, Priscilla Beach Theatre often brings directors, educators, performances and performers to several off-site facilities such as local schools and art centers. More recently, PBT has been producing adult shows like: Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago (musical), and Noises Off.

Bartlett-Russell-Hedge House

The Bartlett-Russell-Hedge House is an historic house at 32 Court Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The three story brick Federal-style house was built in 1803. The house is five bays wide and three deep, with a low railing around the roof, and a cupola on top. The main entry is sheltered by a rounded portico which is probably a later addition. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Clifford-Warren House

The Clifford-Warren House is an historic First Period house at 3 Clifford Road in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 1-1/2 story gambrel-roofed Cape style house was built c. 1695. It is five bays wide, with a large central chimney. The house is believed to be the third on the property, which was granted to Richard Warren in 1627. Its most notable resident was probably James Warren, a noted political opponent of British rule and a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Hillside

Hillside is a historic house at 230 Summer Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story wood frame house was built in 1845, and has Gothic Revival styling. It was the site at which Benjamin Watson established one of the nation's first garden nurseries, the "Old Colony Gardens". It is also where Ralph Waldo Emerson stayed the night before his wedding with Plymouth native Lydia Jackson. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Sgt. William Harlow Family Homestead

The Sgt. Harlow William Family Homestead (also known as the "Harlow-Holmes House" or "Kendall-Holmes House") is a historic house at 8 Winter Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The oldest portion of this 1-1/2 story gambrel-roofed Cape house is believed to have been built by Sergeant William Harlow, before he built the nearby Old Harlow Fort House, and is believed to be one of Plymouth's oldest surviving buildings. It is unclear from the architectural evidence whether the original structure was a single cell (three bays) or full width (five bays); the asymmetry of the front facade suggests it was built in stages. The house has a large addition, which was added to the rear in the 19th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Great Island Pond, known officially as Island Pond, is a 77-acre pond in Plymouth, Massachusetts, one of three ponds known as Island Pond within the town . The pond is located in the eastern portion of The Pinehills development south of Little Island Pond. The Pinehills has a private sewer treatment facility near this pond, which was also formerly used as a holding facility by The Pine Hills LLC Golf Club until the spring of 2003. The Golf Club currently is permitted to withdraw water from four interceptor wells located between the sewer treatment facility and the pond.

It is made up of two parcels; the Crooked Pond parcel abuts the Myles Standish State Forest, the second largest State forest in Massachusetts, and the smaller parcel is located on the shoreline of Island Pond. Massasoit National Wildlife Refuge is located within a 3,269-acre area designated as critical habitat for the Plymouth Red-bellied Turtle.

Billington Sea

Billington Sea is a 269-acre warm water pond located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Morton Park lies on the ponds northern shore. The pond is fed by groundwater and cranberry bog outlets. The average depth is seven feet and the maximum depth is 11 feet . The pond provides the headwaters to Town Brook. Seymour Island is located in the center of the pond. Billington Sea was named after its discoverer, Francis Billington, one of the passengers on the Mayflower who sighted the pond from a tree in January 1621. By tradition, he had climbed a tree and, seeing a body of water, had the idea that he had found the "great South Sea" or the Pacific Ocean. In memory of his error, the pond has been called "Billingtons Sea" since.

The PBA is dedicated to the protection, preservation, and improvement of Priscilla Beach as a private beach for the interest of the property owners in Priscilla Beach. Priscilla Beach Theatre, founded by Dr. Franklin Trask in 1937, it is the oldest barn theatre still in operation in the United States, and is located in Priscilla Beach. Manomet, the village of Plymouth in which Priscilla Beach is located, is especially well known for its Independence Day festivities, which here are traditionally celebrated on July 3.

White Horse Beach

White Horse Beach is a village of Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. It consists of 560 feet of public beach in the White Horse Beach, Massachusetts section of Plymouth and is located on Cape Cod Bay, south of Priscilla Beach. Much of the southern end of the beach, which is also known as Taylor Avenue Beach, south of the outflow of Bartlett Pond, either has cottages on it or has a fenced off conservation area to protect the dunes and fragile plant life. At the north end of the beach is a rock sticking out of the water with an American flag painted on. According to local lore, this act of patriotism was performed to cover a Nazi swastika painted on the rock. In the summer of 1941 local teenagers painted the first flag and went on to join the armed forces after Pearl Harbor was bombed in December 1941. The harsh winter storms washed the flag thin so the swastika showed through. The next Fourth of July the tradition of re-painting the flag was born. Ed Fitzgerald, a White Horse resident, was part of that group. When Ed was of age he also joined the military service and left the tradition to his cousins, the Bradley boys of Priscilla Beach. For years they maintained the flag each Fourth of July until 1985 when family home was sold. There is a small business district just beyond the north end of the beach. It has a general store and a Post Office. Its ZIP code is 02381. Residents and businesses in this village that are non-Post Office box holders use Plymouths ZIP code of 02360. Further inland are St. Catherines Church and White Horse Cemetery, which dates back to the early 18th century. The Post Office was built in the former White Horse Bowling Alley that included pool tables, and pin ball machines. Pin setting was done manually by "Pin Spotters" who had to move fast to keep up with the Bowlers. Two hotels were located on White Horse Beach, the Mayflower and the White Horse Hotel. The Mayflower has since burned and the area developed into Condos. White Horse Hotel was torn down in the sixties to make way for a parking lot.
