Old State Capitol

The Old State Capitol, also known as Old Statehouse, was the third Capitol of Kentucky. The building in Frankfort, Kentucky served as the capitol of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1830 to 1910. The building has been restored to its American Civil War era appearance. The Kentucky legislature voted for its construction in 1827. The building was designed in the Greek Revival style by Gideon Shryock, an early Lexington, Kentucky architect. The Old State Capitol was his first building and he was only twenty-five years old. Shryock chose the Greek Revival style to symbolically link Kentucky, a young republic, with ancient Greece, the prototype of popular democratic government. He wanted the front of the building to duplicate the Temple of Minerva Polias at Priene. Greek temples had no windows, therefore the front of the Capitol is devoid of fenestration. Other striking architectural features include a famous self-supporting stone stairway and a domed lantern above it to bring in an abundance of sunlight. A bitterly contested 1899 state governor election came to a climax when Democratic claimant William Goebel of Covington, Kentucky was assassinated at the capitol on his way to be inaugurated. A plaque reading "William Goebel fell here, Jan. 30th, 1900" exists near the front entrance of the building. The current Kentucky State Capitol, Kentuckys fourth, was built in 1910. The Old State Capitol has served as the a museum and the home of the Kentucky Historical Society since 1920. The building was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery is a distillery located in Frankfort, Kentucky. It has historically been known by several names, including most notably, the George T. Stagg Distillery and the O.F.C. Distillery. Its namesake bourbon brand, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey, was introduced in August 1999. The company claims the distillery is the oldest continuously-operating distillery in the United States. Located on what the company claims was once an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, the distillery is named after the American bison. The Sazerac Company, an American family-owned producer and importer based in New Orleans, Louisiana, purchased the distillery in 1992 and is now the parent company of Buffalo Trace Distillery. Under its old name, George T. Stagg Distillery, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2001, and designated a National Historic Landmark on March 11, 2013.

Confederate Monument in Frankfort

The Confederate Monument in Frankfort, in Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky, is a monument dedicated to the Confederate States of America that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The statue depicts a Confederate soldier standing ready. It is made of white marble, and stands atop a granite pedestal and limestone base. On the pedestal is part of the Bivouac of the Dead, written by Theodore OHara, who is also buried in Frankfort Cemetery. Frankfort would be the only Union state capital captured in the war. Confederate general Kirby Smith would capture the town on September 3, 1862, and would continue a Confederate force until the Battle of Perryville, which forced the Confederacy away from any future control of Kentucky during the American Civil War. This would cause the Union citizenry to build two forts to protect Frankfort. These forts prevented John Hunt Morgan from recapturing the city for the Confederacy in 1864. On July 17, 1997, the Confederate Monument in Frankfort was one of 60 different monuments related to the Civil War in Kentucky placed on the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky Multiple Property Submission. The Colored Soldiers Monument in Frankfort is the only other one in Frankfort, located in Green Hill Cemetery to the east of Frankfort Cemetery.

Old Governor's Mansion

The Old Governor's Mansion, also known as Lieutenant Governor's Mansion, is located at 420 High Street, Frankfort, Kentucky. It is reputed to be the oldest official executive residence officially still in use in the United States, as the mansion is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. In 1796, the Kentucky General Assembly appropriated funds to provide a house to accommodate the governor. Construction was completed in 1798. The home barely survived fires and neglect through the years. It has undergone several style changes as evidenced by some Victorian design elements that were added. The Mansion was often referred to as the "Palace" in its early days. Dignitaries including Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, Louis-Philippe of France, Henry Clay, William Jennings Bryan and the Marquis de Lafayette have been guests of the Mansion. The last occupants of the mansion were Lieutenant Governor Steve Henry and his wife Heather French Henry. Since Henry, Lieutenant Governors have chosen not to live in the mansion but to maintain residences in their hometowns and travel to Frankfort as needed. Because of this, the mansion has been turned over to the Kentucky Historical Society. Both a bricklayer and stonemason who helped build the house, Robert P. Letcher and Thomas Metcalf, later became governors and lived there. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Kentucky Governor's Mansion

The Kentucky Governors Mansion is a historic residence in Frankfort, Kentucky. It is located at the East lawn of the Capitol, at the end of Capital Avenue. On February 1, 1972, it was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1912-14 to be the governors mansion, to designs submitted by Weber, Werner Adkins of Cincinnati, Ohio; besides the Kentuckian architects normally credited with the design, the brothers Chris C. and Edward A. Weber of Fort Thomas, partners in the firm included G.S. Werner, and J.S. Adkins. The brothers Weber were selected from among four firms invited to submit plans. The new mansion replaced the Old Governors Mansion, built in 1798, which still stands, at 420 High Street, Frankfort. The Act specified that the new mansion should be "constructed, trimmed and finished with native stone produced from quarries in Kentucky." The Beaux-Arts design owed a great deal to the Petit Trianon at Versailles interiors were in neoclassical French taste. The landscaping design for the mansion was developed and implemented by William Speed of Louisville. The Governors Mansion Preservation Foundation is a charitable trust that is charged with conservation of the historic structure. The Governors Mansion is regularly open for tours.

Fort Hill

Fort Hill is a hill overlooking downtown Frankfort, Kentucky, where military fortifications were built during the American Civil War to protect the city and its pro-Union state government. Although the Commonwealth of Kentucky did not secede from the Union, an attempt was made to set up a Confederate government at Bowling Green in western Kentucky. A Bluegrass Kentuckian, George W. Johnson of Scott County, was elected first Confederate Governor of Kentucky. He was killed at the Battle of Shiloh. After his death, Richard Hawes of Bourbon County was inaugurated the next Confederate governor at the Old Capitol Building in Frankfort, on October 4, 1862. While the inauguration ceremonies were still underway, Federal forces appeared on the hill to the west of Frankfort and caused Governor Hawes and the Confederates to speedily conclude the ceremony and withdraw from Frankfort toward Versailles in Woodford County. In 1863 two earthen forts, Fort Boone and the larger New Redoubt, were constructed by army engineers and civilian labor. In 1864, local militia in Fort Boone successfully repulsed an attack on Frankfort by raiders from the Confederate cavalry under John Hunt Morgan. The Fort Hill site is now a park and historic site, with a beautiful view of the city and the Kentucky River Valley. The 124-acre heavily forested park preserves the remains of the two Civil War earthwork forts, and is also used for Civil War reenactments. A circa 1810 log house, known as the "Sullivan House," has also been moved to the site. It houses exhibits about Fort Hill and the history of Kentuckys log buildings. The Sullivan House also serves as a site for living history activities.

Church of the Ascension

The Church of the Ascension is an Episcopal Church located in the heart of Frankfort, Kentucky's historic district at 311 Washington Street. It was organized in 1836. The church is governed by a vestry of 8 to 10 members, presided over by the Senior Warden and the Rector. Vestry members are elected during an annual meeting of all of the congregation. Services are conducted by one or two priests and a deacon. Four to six children serve as acolytes in services, carrying the Cross and torches. Organizations include the Altar Guild, which sets up for services, takes care of the sanctuary, and decorates; the vestry; the Youth Group; Sunday School; ECW, the women's association; and the Men's Club, which cooks breakfast on Sundays and helps raise money and care for the church. The Church of the Ascension is the oldest extant church in Frankfort.
