Challenger Learning Center

The Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee is a 32,000 square-foot facility located on beautiful Kleman Plaza in downtown Tallahassee. The Center is the K-12 outreach facility of the Florida A&M University – Florida State University College of Engineering and strives to foster long-term interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); create positive learning experiences; and motivate students to pursue higher education and careers in these fields. To accomplish this mission, the Challenger Learning Center features a state-of-the-art Space Mission Simulator and utilizes the immersiveness of an IMAX® 3D Theatre, the Downtown Digital Dome Theatre & Planetarium, and hands-on or demonstrational science techniques and equipment.

Florida State Capitol

The Florida State Capitol, in Tallahassee, Florida, USA, is an architecturally and historically significant building, having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The capitol is located at the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and Monroe Street in downtown Tallahassee, Florida, the state capital. Sometimes called "The Old Capitol," the Historic Capitol, built in 1845, was threatened with demolition in the late 1970s when the new capitol building was built. Having been restored to its 1902-version in 1982, the Historic Capitol is located directly behind the new Capitol building. Its restored space includes the Governors Suite, Supreme Court, House of Representatives and Senate chambers, rotunda, and halls. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, commonly known as Florida A&M University or FAMU, is a public, historically black university in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. Florida A&M University was founded on the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee, Florida on October 3, 1887. It is one of the largest historically black universities in the United States by enrollment. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida, as well as one of the state's land grant universities, and is accredited to award baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. In 2015, the National Science Foundation ranked Florida A&M University as the #1 HBCU in the nation for total research and development expenditures.

Tallahassee Automobile Museum

The Tallahassee Automobile Museum , also known as the Tallahassee Automobile and Collectibles Museum, is an automobile museum in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. The museum's collection includes over 140 automobiles, die-cast toy cars, pedal cars, antique boating items, golf memorabilia, Hit and Miss motors, brass cash registers, clocks, bicycles, boats, sports memorabilia, motorcycles, can openers, spark plugs, artifacts and memorabilia. The collection includes three Batmobiles, an 1894 Duryea, a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Double Cowl Phaeton Convertible, 1911 Ford Model T Torpedo Run About, 1955 Kayser Darrin Roadster, a Delorean and a 1948 Tucker.

Florida State University

The Florida State University (commonly referred to as Florida State or FSU) is an American public space-grant and sea-grant research university. Its primary campus is located on a 1,391.54-acre (5.631 km2) campus in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. It is a senior member of the State University System of Florida. Founded in 1851, it is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida. The University is classified as a Research University with Very High Research by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The university comprises 16 separate colleges and more than 110 centers, facilities, labs and institutes that offer more than 360 programs of study, including professional school programs. The university has an annual budget of over $1.7 billion. Florida State is home to Florida's only National Laboratory – the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and is the birthplace of the commercially viable anti-cancer drug Taxol. Florida State University also operates The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the State Art Museum of Florida and one of the largest museum/university complexes in the nation. Mission San Luis de Apalachee

Mission San Luis de Apalachee (also known as San Luis de Talimali) was a Spanish Franciscan mission built in 1633 in the Florida Panhandle, two miles west of the present-day Florida Capitol Building in Tallahassee, Florida. It was located in the descendent settlement of Anhaica (also as Anhayca Apalache or Inihayca) capital of Apalachee Province. The mission was part of Spain's effort to colonize the region, and convert the Timucuan and Apalachee Indians to Christianity. The mission lasted until 1704, when it was evacuated and destroyed to prevent its use by an approaching militia of Creek Indians and South Carolinians. The site where the mission stood was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.

San Pedro y San Pablo de Patale

San Pedro y San Pablo de Patale was a Spanish Franciscan mission built in the early 17th century in the Florida Panhandle, six miles east of Tallahassee, Florida. It was part of Spain's effort to colonize the region, and convert the Timucuan and Apalachee Indians to Christianity. The mission lasted until 1704, when it was captured by a militia of Creek Indians and South Carolinians. The site where the mission stood was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 26, 1972.

DeSoto Site Historic State Park

DeSoto Site Historic State Park is a Florida state park located in Tallahassee, Florida. It consists of 5 acres of land near Apalachee Parkway including the residence of former Governor John W. Martin. The site is intended to initiate research and education on nearly four centuries of recorded history beginning with Hernando de Sotos use of the site as a winter encampment in 1539 to Governor Martins occupation of Apalachee in the 1930s.

Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail

Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail is a rail trail and Florida State Park located on 16 miles of the historic railbed of the Tallahassee Railroad, which ran between Tallahassee and St. Marks, Florida. The trail ends near the confluence of the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers. The portion of the trail south of US 98 is designated as a portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail. A paved extension of the trail extends north for approximately 4 miles into the City of Tallahassee.

Leon Sinks Geological Area

The Leon Sinks Geological Area is located on the Woodville Karst Plain in southern and southwestern Leon County, Florida, United States. It is a mature karstic area on the Upper Floridan Aquifer. It is one of the most extensive underwater cave systems in the world and connects to Wakulla Springs. This hydrological system is extremely vulnerable to pollution because of the very high permeability of the carbonate aquifer. Extensive mapping and exploration of these caves has been done by the Woodville Karst Plain Project to understand the complex dynamics of the area and to understand the proper ecological approach to keeping this system clean. The Leon Sinks are full of life, including the freshwater eel and rare crustaceans, including the Woodville Karst Plain crayfish and the swimming Florida cave isopod Remasellus parvus, that only exist in the Woodville Karst Plain.

Carnegie Library at FAMU

The Carnegie Library at FAMU is a historic building on the campus of Florida AM University in Tallahassee, Florida. It was one of many public and college libraries donated by Andrew Carnegie which were named Carnegie Library after him. Carnegies library was built at what is today FAMU because the city of Tallahassee refused it, since under Carnegies rules it would have had to have served black patrons. It was designed by noted architect William Augustus Edwards and was built in 1908. On November 17, 1978, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Doak Campbell Stadium

Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium, commonly referred to as Doak Campbell Stadium or "Doak", is the football stadium on the campus of the Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. It is the home venue for the universitys football team, nicknamed the Seminoles. The stadium was named for Doak S. Campbell, the president of the university at the time of its construction, and the field was named for legendary head football coach Bobby Bowden. The stadium is part of the University Center complex, a mixed-use facility encompassing university office space, university classrooms, the universitys Visitors Center, souvenir store, The University Center Club, as well as skyboxes and press boxes for use during football games. The stadium has a capacity of 82,300, making it the fifteenth largest stadium in the NCAA, the largest football stadium in the ACC and the largest continuous brick structure in the United States. On November 20, 2004 in accordance with an act of state legislation, the stadium and field were renamed Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium. Doak Campbell Stadium regularly makes lists of the best gameday atmospheres and most intimidating places to play.

Donald L. Tucker Civic Center

The Donald L. Tucker Civic Center is a multi-purpose arena in Tallahassee, Florida, owned by Florida State University. The arena has the biggest capacity of any arena in the Florida Panhandle. The arena opened in 1981 and was built at a cost of $33.8 million, financed by the city.

Bragg Memorial Stadium

Bragg Memorial Stadium is a 25,500-seat football stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, USA. It opened in 1957 and was renovated in 1982. It is home to the Florida AM Rattlers football team. Built in 1957, Bragg Memorial Stadium is home to Florida AM Football. The stadium is named in memory of two of the schools earliest figures in its storied intercollegiate athletic program—the "First Family of Rattler Football"—the father and son combination of Jubie and Eugene Bragg. Jubie Bragg was one of the schools first athletic directors, being one of the key figures in the football program gaining varsity status in 1906. He returned after a brief stint at Tuskegee to become the schools first head football coach and athletic director at FAMU from 1923 to 1925 and again from 1930 to 1932. Braggs son, Eugene, one of the schools first All-America gridders, took over the reins of the program in 1934, coaching through 1935, when an automobile accident ended his life. Until the stadiums construction in 1957, the Rattlers played on a cow pasture south of the campus and then on a grass field, first known as Bragg Field located on a hill directly behind the current Gaither Gymnasium, where the present track and field complex is located. The field was moved to that location, so that fans could use the bathroom facilities in the nearby dormitories. At the previous location in the cow pasture, it was a walk of a quarter mile to the nearest restroom. However, thanks to appropriations from the Florida Legislature, the all-steel stadium on the campus westernmost edge was built in 1957. That configuration featured 10,500 permanent seats and bleachers elevated the capacity to 13,200. But by the 1980s, the stadium had fallen into disrepair and had grown too small for the Rattler Football Program. The 1980 season saw the stadium condemned by the State of Florida engineers, prompting the Legislature to appropriate over a half million dollars for the stadiums renovation and expansion to begin 1981 with remodeling, to make the stadium suitable for crowds again. By 1982, the renovation and expansion had made the stadium a 25,500-seat facility with press box elevator, a $125,000 scoreboard with message center, a built-in sprinkler and drainage system, improved restroom, concessions and ticket booths and paved parking areas. The project was completed in 1983, with the unveiling of the Galimore-Powell Fieldhouse, located adjacent to the stadiums south end zone. That structure contained coaches offices, conference room, equipment and training/treatment rooms, two locker rooms, one for each team, plus an officials locker room and a weight training room.

Tully Gymnasium

The Bobby Tully Gymnasium is a 2,500 seat multi-purpose arena, in Tallahassee, Florida, that opened in 1956. It is the home of the Florida State University Seminoles volleyball team. Prior to the Donald L. Tucker Center opening in 1981, it was home to the mens basketball team as well. The arena played host to The Rolling Thunder Revue Tour on April 27, 1976, headed by Bob Dylan.

Lewis House

The Lewis House, also known as Spring House, is a historic home in Tallahassee, Florida, located north of I-10, at 3117 Okeeheepkee Road. It was built in 1954. On February 14, 1979, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for George Lewis II, President of the Lewis State Bank, and his wife Clifton. The National Trust for Historic Preservation describes its significance: "The novel hemicycle form of Spring House represents a late, and little-known, stage in Wright’s long, prolific career. Although there are approximately 400 intact houses attributed to Wright throughout the country, only a fraction were from his hemicycle series." Over the past few decades the home had come into disrepair and with bricks falling from their mortar and wood rot. An institute was formed in to protect the house in 1996 but the first work project was not started until January 2013. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the house on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places. In 2014, the National Trust for Historic Preservation included the house on its annual list of "America's Eleven Most Endangered Places." Spring House Institute is trying to save it.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church is an historic church in Tallahassee, Florida. It is located at 102 North Adams Street. The congregation was first organized on November 4, 1832 and the church building was built between 1835 and 1838, which makes it the oldest church in Tallahassee and the oldest building in Florida that's still being used for its original purpose. The building was designed to serve as a sanctuary for women and children during American Indian attacks. Rifle slots are built into the foundation but are not visible from outside. On September 9, 1974, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Today, there are still services every Sunday at 10:45. There are estimated to be several hundred members of the congregation, with average attendance of just over two hundred persons. The congregation is part of the Presbyterian Church , and is known for having and maintaining a progressive theological and social perspective through the years. Since 2008, First Presbyterian Church has been affiliated with The Covenant Network of Presbyterians, and supports the ordination of all qualified persons into both lay and ordained ministry, regardless of sexual orientation. For the past several years, First Presbyterian Church has been a sponsor of Pridefest. In 2009, the "Light from Light" campaign was born. As a part of this program, solar panels were added to the building, making First Presbyterian one of only a few churches nationwide to generate a portion of its own electricity. As of 2010, First Presbyterian Church was home to the second largest solar panel array in Leon County.

Pisgah United Methodist Church

The Pisgah United Methodist Church is a historic church north of Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA. It is located southeast of State Road 151 at the end of Pisgah Church Road. On May 3, 1974, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. A Greek Revival style building, the Pisgah United Methodist Church is the oldest remaining Methodist church building in Leon County. The current 1858 structure is the third church to be located on that site. It had a broad front porch preceded the three front doors. The east and west sides of the church have 4 elongated windows.

Tallahassee station

Tallahassee station, also known as the Jacksonville, Pensacola and Mobile Railroad Company Freight Depot, is a historic train station in Tallahassee, Florida. It was built in 1858 and was served by various railways until 2005, when Amtrak suspended service due to Hurricane Katrina. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Lewis and Lucretia Taylor House

The Taylor House is a historic home in Tallahassee, Florida. The home was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 6, 2015. The Taylor House Museum, located at 442 West Georgia Street, was also added to the Tallahassee-Leon County Register of Historic Places on October 26, 2011. On July 27, 2012, the Florida Department of State designated the home a Florida Heritage Site.

Governor's Square

Governor's Square is a super-regional shopping mall located on Apalachee Parkway in Tallahassee, Florida. Its two-level design was a first for northern Florida when it opened in 1979, and was for many years the newest of two enclosed malls in the Tallahassee area, the other being The Centre of Tallahassee, formerly the Tallahassee Mall. Its anchors are Sears, JCPenney, Dillard's, Macy's, and H&M. Chicago, Illinois-based General Growth Properties owns and manages Governor's Square. Built into a hillside, the mall can be entered either on the first or second level, depending on where a particular entrance is located. The mall's original anchors, JCPenney, Sears and Maas Brothers, anchored the original structure. Maas Brothers was converted to Burdines in 1991. A 1993 expansion included an additional wing as well as Dillard's becoming the fourth anchor. In 2015 the Governor's Square Mall received a $10 million interior and exterior renovation. Over the course of 2004 and 2005, the Burdines store was converted to a Macy's. The mall lies within a relatively affluent trade area less than two miles east of downtown.

David S. Walker Library

The David S. Walker Library (also known as The University Library) is a historic library in Tallahassee, Florida named for Governor David S. Walker who served from 1865 through 1868. For many years it housed Tallahassee's public library.It is located 209 East Park Avenue. On June 22, 1976, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The library serves as the meeting place for the board of Springtime Tallahassee.

Covington House

The Covington House, also known as the Schendel House, is an historic building located at 328 Cortez Street in Tallahassee, Florida. Built in 1927, it was designed by noted architect William Augustus Edwards. On September 7, 1989, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Florida A&M University's Teaching Gymnasium officially named the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center is a 9,639-seat multi-purpose arena in Tallahassee, Florida. It was built in 2009 and it is home to the Florida A&M University basketball team. The arena replaced Jake Gaither Gymnasium, which is a 3,365-seat multi-purpose arena. The Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center is the second biggest arena in Tallahassee, Florida right behind the 13,800 seat arena, the Donald L. Tucker Center. The official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was April 8, 2009. Florida state senator Al Lawson was instrumental in getting the funding for this center and other buildings on the campus of Florida A&M University. Lawson is a well known alumnus and had the privilege of having his family there to see him accept the honor of the building being named for him.

Westcott Building

The James D. Westcott Building is a historic building on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, in the U.S. state of Florida. The Westcott Building currently houses the chief administrative offices for Florida State University and is the primary focal point of the campus as seen down College Ave. The building is also home to Ruby Diamond Auditorium. It is known for its distinctive appearance.

Goodwood Plantation

Goodwood Plantation was a medium sized cotton plantation of about 1,675 acres in central Leon County, Florida, established by Hardy Bryan Croom. It is located at 1600 Miccosukee Road. The plantation was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 30, 1972.
