Beauvoir

The Beauvoir estate is notable as the historic post-war home of the former President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis,,, and more influentially as United States Senator from Mississippi, and in between U.S. Secretary of War,, under 14th President Franklin Pierce). Its construction was begun in 1848 facing the Gulf Coastline at Biloxi, Mississippi. It was purchased earlier in 1873 by the planter Samuel Dorsey and his wife Sarah Dorsey. After her husbands death in 1875, the widow, Sarah Ellis Dorsey learned of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis difficulties. She invited him to visit at the plantation and offered him a cottage near the main house, where he could live and work at his memoirs . He ended up living there the rest of his life. The house and plantation have since been designated as a National Historic Landmark, recognized and listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior and its National Park Service . Ill with cancer, in 1878 Sarah Ellis Dorsey remade her will, bequeathing "Beauvoir" to Jefferson Davis and his surviving daughter, Varina Anne Davis, known as "Winnie". His wife Varina Howell Davis was also living there, and the three Davises lived there until former President Davis death in 1889. His young second wife and widow, and her daughter moved to New York City in 1891. After the death of Varina Anne Davis in 1898, Varina Howell Davis inherited the plantation. She sold it in 1902 to the Mississippi Division, of the Sons of Confederate Veterans with the stipulation that it be used as a Confederate state veterans home and later as a memorial to her husband. Barracks were built nearby and the property was used as such a home until 1953, with the death of the last veteran of the Confederate States Army in Mississippi. At that time, the main house was adapted as a house museum. In 1998, a Presidential Library was completed and opened on site. The main house and library were badly damaged, and other outbuildings were destroyed, during Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Beauvoir survived a similar onslaught from Hurricane Camille in 1969. The house was restored and has been re-opened, while work continues on the library.

Jefferson Davis Presidential Library

The Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum has the purpose of preserving, housing and making available the papers, records, artifacts and other historical materials of Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States, located near his final estate, Beauvoir, in Biloxi, Mississippi. Despite its name it is not an official Presidential Library, as Davis was never President of the United States. It is, however, supported by the State of Mississippi, as declared on a plaque at the entrance. The facility was officially opened and dedicated in 1998 by the State of Mississippi. Besides the library, the site includes the house, containing many of the furnishings from the time of Davis, the Confederate Museum, and the cemetery of Confederate graves. On August 29, 2005, the facility suffered heavy damage from the fierce wind and water of Hurricane Katrina. The library pavilion, the Hayes cottage, Soldiers Home Barracks replica, Confederate Soldiers Museum, gift shop, and the directors home were totally destroyed. Artifacts were photographed, inventoried, boxed and placed in environmental storage while conservation of the items and the house furniture were under way. A bid of $4.1 million was taken on January 9, 2007, for the reconstruction of the facilities. Restoration of Beauvoir mansion was completed in May 2008, and the site was officially reopened on June 3, the 200th anniversary of Davis birth. Because of hurricane damage, renovation of the former presidential library was deemed impossible; consequently, a new library and museum complex was constructed and opened to the public in June 2013. The Federal Emergency Management Agency paid $4 million to repair the manor house and an additional $10 million to build the new library. The Bill Beckwith statue of Davis that once graced the rotunda of the library stands near the entrance, along with a new statue by noted Civil War artist Gary Casteel that was added in 2009.

Pleasant Reed House

The Pleasant Reed House was a sidehall shotgun house in Biloxi, Mississippi on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by Pleasant Reed, a former slave on a Mississippi farm who moved with his family to coastal Biloxi after the American Civil War. Reed, as a freedman, worked as a laborer and carpenter and earned the money to build his own house for his rapidly growing family. The house was saved by the Biloxi chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and added to the National Register in 1979. In 2003, the House was moved to the new Frank Gehry-designed campus of the Ohr-OKeefe Museum Of Art, where it was restored and opened to the public for tours. On August 29, 2005, the House was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. However, the original archival materials and photographs were saved by museum curators, and the museums Board of Trustees voted to rebuild the Pleasant Reed House. The Pleasant Reed Interpretive Center, a replica of the original house, opened to the public on September 29, 2008. The center features exhibits on local African American history.

Beau Rivage

Beau Rivage is a waterfront casino resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA. It is owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. Beau Rivage was rebuilt and re-opened in 2006, a year after Hurricane Katrina. The Beau Rivage hotel is the tallest building in Mississippi. The term Beau Rivage is French for beautiful shore. The Beau Rivage, with 1,740 rooms, opened in March 1999. At that time of its opening, it was the largest hotel/casino in the United States outside of Nevada. The casino was located on a series of floating barges as required by local law confining all casinos to mobile marine vessels at the time of the resorts construction. The hotel, restaurants, parking garage, and associated facilities were constructed on land. The height of the 28-floor hotel-casino is 346 ft . Beau Rivage has won every major local, regional, and state award available for outstanding community service including the Governors Cup Award for Outstanding Large Business on July 10, 2003. The name of Beau Rivage was originally meant for the Bellagio casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip, however, developer Steve Wynn of Mirage Resorts changed Beau Rivage into Bellagio, and reserved this name for his new waterfront casino in Biloxi. Beau Rivage restaurants include: BR Prime Steakhouse, Jia Pan-Asian Cuisine, Memphis Q Smokehouse Barbecue, Coast, Stalla Italian Cuisine, The Beau Rivage Buffet, Terrace Cafe, Roasted Bean Coffee Bistro, Snacks, and Scoops Ice Cream. Both BR Prime and Jia have earned the 4 star rating from AAA and Wine Spectators Award of Excellence. The AAA Four Diamond Beau Rivage is the number one casino resort visited in Mississippi.

President Casino Broadwater Resort

The President Casino Broadwater Resort was a combined casino and resort that was located in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was a fixture on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for over 60 years. Originally known as the Broadwater Beach Hotel and Broadwater Beach Resort, it opened in 1939 as a venue for the illegal but tacitly approved gambling that was flourishing along the coast. In the late 1950s and 1960s, the gambling stopped and the facility was renovated and re-purposed as a resort destination with a state-of-the-art marina and other amenities. In its heyday the Broadwater Beach Resort hosted movie stars, leading politicians, and top business figures as well as people on vacation. It became the Gulf Coasts flagship resort and its colorfully lit front sign was iconic. In 1992, President Casinos gained control of the facility, and after changing the name, added a casino riverboat and barge. The casino had a successful niche following among lower-end gamblers, but the problems of the parent company resulting in bankruptcy filings in the early 2000s. In 2005, new owners closed the resort and casino shortly before Hurricane Katrina destroyed them.
