Bethlehem Waterworks

Bethlehem Waterworks, also known as Old Waterworks or 1762 Waterworks is a historic site in Pennsylvania significant for its age. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1981. It is located within "Historic Subdistrict A" near Monocacy Creek, and on the "east bank of Monocacy Creek immediately north of Hill to Hill Bridge and immediately west of Main St." It is included as part of the Bethlehem Colonial Industrial Quarter.

Manger Square

Manger Square is an important city square in the center of Bethlehem in Palestine. It takes its name from the manger where Jesus is said to have been born which, according to Christian dogma, is in the Church of the Nativity, possibly the oldest existing church in the world, which surrounds the square. Also around Manger Square is the Mosque of Omar and the Palestinian Peace Center. Streets with names connected to Jesus, including Star Street and Nativity Street, lead into the square. In 1998-1999, the square was renovated to relieve the traffic congestion and currently is pedestrian only. It is mainly a meeting place for locals and for the towns many pilgrims. There are rows of celtis australis that provide shade to its people with benches and fountains made of white yellowish Naqab marble below. On April 21, 2013, Manger Square was the starting and finishing line of Palestine Marathon.

Lewis David de Schweinitz Residence

Gemeinhaus-Lewis David de Schweinitz Residence, also known as the Moravian Museum, is a house in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Built to house the married couples of the Moravian community as well as the communitys place of worship, the Saal, it is the oldest surviving building in Bethlehem, the largest surviving log house in the USA and also significant for its association with the botanist and mycologist Lewis David de Schweinitz. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

Church of the Nativity

The Church of the Nativity is a basilica located in Bethlehem, Palestine. The church was originally commissioned in 327 AD by Constantine and his mother Helena over the site that is still traditionally considered to be located over the cave that marks the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth. The Church of the Nativity sites original basilica was completed in 339 AD and destroyed by fire during the Samaritan Revolts in the sixth century AD. A new basilica was built 565 AD by Justinian, the Byzantine Emperor, restoring the architectural tone of the original. The site of the Church of the Nativity has had numerous additions since this second construction, including its prominent bell towers. Due to its cultural and geographical history, the site holds a prominent religious significance to those of both the Christian and Muslim faiths. The site of the Church of the Nativity is a World Heritage Site, and was the first to be listed under Palestine by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization . The site is also on UNESCOs List of World Heritage Sites in Danger.

Wadi Murabba'at

Wadi Murabba'at, also known as Nahal Darga, is a ravine cut by a seasonal stream which runs from the Judean desert east of Bethlehem past the Herodium down to the Dead Sea 18 km south of Khirbet Qumran in the West Bank. It was here in caves that Jewish fighters hid out during the Bar Kochba revolt, leaving behind documents that include some letters signed by Simon Bar Kochba.

Aida Camp

Aida (Arabic: مخيم عايده‎), also spelled 'Ayda, is a Palestinian refugee camp situated 2 kilometers north of Bethlehem and 1 kilometer north of Beit Jala in the central West Bank. Adjacent to Rachel's Tomb, it is walled off from Jerusalem by the Israeli West Bank barrier and contiguous to the Israeli neighbourhood of Gilo. Named after a famous coffeehouse located on the site in the early 1940s, Aida camp was established in 1950 and covered an area of 66 dunams. On the camp's entrance gate a huge "key of return" is pictured, and on the separation barrier a largo graffito has been painted with the words Gernika [Guernica]1936 Palestina 1948. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the camp had a population of approximately 3,260 refugees in mid-year 2006. It is the location of the Al Rowwad Cultural and Theatre Training Center. The Aida Refugee camp is adjacent to a new 4-star hotel, the Intercontinental. Unlike the situation at the Jenin refugee camp, the Aida refugees reportedly practice non-violent opposition to the Israeli occupation. Pope Benedict XVI visited the refugee camp during his Middle East pilgrimage visit to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories in May 2009. He said that the refugees lived in "precarious and difficult conditions" and that "It is tragic to see walls still being erected". On 29 October 2015, at dusk, a video filmed on his iPhone by a resident of the Aida Refugee Camp, Yazan Ikhlayel (17), captured a megaphone address made from an Israeli military vehicle during a raid into the camp. The speech warned residents that, if they did not desist from stone throwing they would be gassed to death children, youths and the aged. Referring apparently to the arrest of Qassan Abu Aker, the speaker added that one of the arrested would be killed as the residents looked on if the throwing did not stop. The Border Police immediately suspended the officer suspected in the incident, and is reviewing his continued service in the force.

Gristmiller's House

Gristmiller's House, also known as The Miller's House, is a historic home located at Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The original building is a one-story limestone structure built in 1782. A 1 1/2-story brick addition in the Federal style was built in the 1830s. It is included as part of the Bethlehem Colonial Industrial Quarter. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Elmwood Park Historic District

Elmwood Park Historic District is a historic housing development in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania roughly bounded by Goepp Circle, Woodruff St., Park Pl., and Carson St. The 68 houses in the district were built of brick, clapboard, and stucco from 1917-1920. It is significant for its architecture, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Michael and Margaret Heller House

Michael and Margaret Heller House, also known as the Heller Homestead, is a historic home located at Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The house is a two-part building, renovated in 1934-1935 in the Colonial Revival style. The house has a two-story, five bay main block built about 1820, with a two-story, two bay core structure to the rear built about 1751. Also on the property are the contributing Widow's House, built in 1850, and a mid-19th century root cellar. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church is a church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The church was established in 1875, and the present building on Center Street was completed in 1957. First Presbyterian Church has 2,609 members and is in the process of leaving the PC(USA) and joning Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians. The reasons given for considering breaking away from the mother church are same sex issues, Biblical interpretation, and reluctance to become involved in social justice work such as divestment from stocks supporting injustices including the military occupation of Palestine. Pastor Dave Duquette, moderator of the Lehigh Presbytery, will lead the congregation in the discernment process to determine the wishes of the 2609 members. A large group of church persons wished more information about this historic move-especially the significant financial and social costs-and they have formed an educational effort to remain in the PC(USA) named Presbyterians for Unity.

Housenick Park

Housenick Park is the popular name for a passive park located in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania. The 55 acre/22.3 hectare Janet Johnston Housenick and William D. Housenick Memorial Park of Bethlehem Township and the 36 acre/14.6 hectare Archibald Johnston Conservation Area of Northampton County comprise the park. The two parcels were gifts of Janet Johnston Housenick, the great-granddaughter of Archibald Johnston, the first mayor of the consolidated city of Bethlehem.

Moravian Sun Inn

The Moravian Sun Inn was an 18th-century inn built by the Moravian community at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to provide accommodations for non-Moravian merchants who had business with the community. Many people prominent during the American Revolution stayed there, including George Washington, Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and the Marquis de Lafayette. On September 22, 1777 fourteen members of the Continental Congress signed the register and stayed overnight. The original inn was built in 1758, as a 66-by-40-foot , two-story stone building with a mansard roof. In 1826 a third story was added with 17 new rooms. In 1866 the building was again enlarged, almost completely hiding the original inn. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. After Washington's defeat at the Battle of Brandywine much of the American army's baggage and stores were kept near the inn and many people fleeing Philadelphia stayed at the inn. During Fries's Rebellion in 1799 seventeen of Fries's followers were held at the inn and then freed by Fries.

Musikfest

Musikfest is an American music festival that has been held annually in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States, since 1984, and it claims to be the nation's largest non-gated free music festival. The festival begins on the first Friday in August, and ends on Sunday ten days later. Each year, thousands of visitors and residents of Pennsylvania make the trip to Bethlehem to participate in a celebration that weaves through a Moravian community that dates back to 1741. Festival visitors are treated to hundreds of free shows over the course of the event. Each night, the festival's premium stage, Steel Stage (formerly known as RiverPlace and Kunstplatz), hosts a nationally-known recording artist. These premium concerts, along with select shows at other stages, do require paid tickets to gain admission. Some notable past headlining shows have included Clay Aiken, Air Supply, Alan Jackson, Alice in Chains, Adam Lambert, Alice Cooper, Boston, The Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, Boyz II Men, Carrie Underwood, Collective Soul, Ray Charles, George Clinton, Dixie Chicks, B.B. King, Kansas, Weird Al Yankovic, Poison, Staind, Duran Duran, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ludacris, Hootie & the Blowfish, Kool & The Gang, Jethro Tull, Jonny Lang, Stone Sour, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Don McLean, Martina McBride, Steve Miller Band, Live, Enter the Haggis, REO Speedwagon, Maroon 5, George Thorogood, and many others. Local German roots are the foundation of the celebration, and most of the festival's venues use Platz, the German word for place or square, at the ends of their names. A popular place for eating and listening to music, for example, is the large "Festplatz", which includes 300 dining tables, and usually features a polka band each night. Beyond that, however, Musikfest's music, food, and other attractions represent a broad range of ethnicities. Musikfest is presented by ArtsQuest, a nonprofit arts organization founded to "celebrate arts and culture" in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Proceeds from the event benefit ArtsQuest ventures such as the Banana Factory community arts center in South Bethlehem, as well as other nonprofit groups throughout the region.

Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem

Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem is a hotel and casino located in the Bethlehem Works development site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, in the United States. The casino is owned, operated, and constructed by the Las Vegas Sands corporation. It is one of five stand-alone casinos that was awarded a slots license by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on December 20, 2006. The casino was slated to open in July 2008, but demolition took longer than expected due to the heavy concrete foundations of the old steel building. Its opening was delayed until the second quarter of 2009. The first concrete for the complex, which is located on the former Bethlehem Steel land on the South side of the city, was poured on November 15, 2007. The casino opened May 22, 2009. In the winter of 2009-2010, the Casino was granted a license for table games which allowed the casino to expand to include 180 table games of Poker, Blackjack and Craps. Table games began operation on July 18, 2010. The Sands Hotel opened on May 27, 2011. The Sands Bethlehem is the only property in the company to end 2014 with a profit, doing better than Sands' Vegas and Asia properties.

Lehigh University

Lehigh University is an American private research university located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1865 by businessman Asa Packer and has grown to include studies in a wide variety of disciplines. Its undergraduate programs have been coeducational since the 1971–72 academic year. As of 2014, the university had 4,904 undergraduate students and 2,165 graduate students. Lehigh is considered one of the twenty-four Hidden Ivies in the Northeastern United States. Lehigh has four colleges: the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, and the College of Education. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college today, home to roughly 40% percent of the university's students. The university offers a variety of degrees, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy. Lehigh has produced Nobel Prize winners, Pulitzer Prize winners, Fulbright Fellows, American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences members, and National Medal of Science winners.

Zoellner Arts Center

Zoellner Arts Center is an arts center located on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It opened in 1997, having been endowed by a $6 million gift from Robert Zoellner and his wife Victoria. The center houses the following facilities: Baker Hall a 1,014-seat auditorium with a multi-purpose proscenium stage, suited for concerts, stage productions, ceremonies and lectures. Diamond Theater a small 309-seat 3/4 thrust theater with steeply raked stadium seating suited for theatrical and small music groups. Black Box Theater a smaller 125-seat theater A two-story art gallery Additional facilities including several rehearsal rooms, recording studio, dance studio, practice rooms, scene shop, costume shop, dressing rooms and green room, classrooms, music library, box office, faculty and staff offices, and three large lobbies and a 345-car parking deck attached to the building. The venue has had a wide array of performers, including: the New York Philharmonic and Itzhak Perlman, the Tuvan throat singers Huun-Huur-Tu and Laurie Anderson, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, MOMIX, the Aquila Theatre Company, Lily Tomlin, Bernadette Peters and Queen Latifah. The progressive rock music festival NEARFest is held each summer at the arts center as well, though it is not affiliated with the University. The building was designed by Charles Dagit of Dagit Saylor Architects in Philadelphia.

Badd Giacaman Museum

The Badd Giacaman Museum is located in the center of Bethlehem, near the Church of the Nativity. The building in which the museum was built dates from the 18th-19th century. From 1998 to 2000, the museum was restored by the Department of Antiquities, in coordination with the UNDP and the Greek Orthodox Society. The museum houses several ethnographic and archaeological artifacts depicting the process of olive oil production. The exhibits demonstrate the use of olive oil for lamps, medicine, food, soap, cosmetics, etc.

Stabler Arena

Stabler Arena is a 6,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States. Owned and operated by Lehigh University, it is located on the schools Goodman Campus. It was named for Donald B. Stabler, a 1930 Lehigh graduate who was the founder of Stabler Companies Inc. and a member of the universitys Board of Trustees for over 30 years. He and his wife Dorothy were the primary donors for the facility. The arena officially opened with Lehighs Commencement Exercises on May 27, 1979. Its first public event was Holiday on Ice in November later that same year.

SouthSide Film Festival

The SouthSide Film Festival is an annual non-competitive, not-for-profit film festival that takes place each June in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA. The first festival took place in 2004. The "SouthSide" refers to the area of the city on the south side of the Lehigh River which was home to Bethlehem Steel and is currently undergoing redevelopment. The festival's logo pays homage to that industrial heritage by including a representation of a blast furnace,still highly visible in Bethlehem. Film screenings take place on the campus of Lehigh University and in alternative venues such as Godfrey Daniels Listening Club and Deja Brew Coffeehouse. From its inception through 2008, the festival has screened films from 54 countries and 31 states of the U.S. The festival focuses on independent filmmaking and features Invitational Films and Juried Selections, a highlighted genre, and a highlighted cultural region. Also included in the annual festival are filmmaking workshops to teach techniques and concepts to accomplished and aspiring filmmakers. Returning teachers include Mel Halbach and Clayton Farr of FilmTreks, Shanti Thakur of Hofstra University, and Pawel Partyka of Se-ma-for animation studio. The SouthSide Film Festival and its host organization, The SouthSide Film Institute, have received numerous grants and awards including a Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission Organization of the Year award which noted "By providing access to independent films for the public, creating a venue for film enthusiasts and filmmakers to come together, and mounting a children's film series, (the SouthSide Film Festival is) developing an appreciation for film as an art form and contributing to a thriving arts scene in Bethlehem that benefits the Lehigh Valley"

Blast Furnace Blues Festival

The Blast Furnace Blues Festival is a blues music festival, started by ArtsQuest in 2011 in conjunction with Michael Cloeren Productions. The festival is held at the Yuengling Musikfest Cafe and the Fowler Blast Furnace Room. Both venues are located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Blast Furnace Blues Festival was founded to showcase the best in contemporary and traditional blues, acoustic and electric blues, soul, zydeco and gospel music. Performers featured include national recording artists as well as local and regional performers. There was no festival held in 2013. It was removed due to the introduction of several smaller music and arts festivals, but made its return in 2014 with a completely revamped setup.

RiverJazz Festival

The RiverJazz Festival is a jazz music festival started by ArtsQuest in 2011. The festival has been held each year at SteelStacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. SteelStacks is a dynamic arts, culture and education campus that was constructed on 4.5 acres of the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The event showcases local and national jazz and swing artists over the course of several days, typically sometime in April, May, or June. Attendees are welcome to attend the many free shows around the festival, or purchase tickets to see national headlining acts, where they are also offered meal options.

Bethlehem Silk Mill

Bethlehem Silk Mill is a historic silk mill complex located at Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1886, and expanded about 1896 and about 1901. The complex once consisted of a total of seven interconnected historic buildings that formed an open rectangular plan around two central courtyards. Some of the buildings have been demolished. All of the buildings were constructed of red brick with stone foundations. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Lehigh Valley Railroad Headquarters Building

Lehigh Valley Railroad Headquarters Building, also known as the Conrail Building, is a historic office building located at Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It is a red brick building set on a stone masonry base. The building was built by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in two stages; the ground through third floors were constructed in 1885-1886 and the upper floors and western wing were added in 1889-1890. The building's style reflects Late Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne influences. The main elevation features two copper bay windows at the corners; one three stories tall and the other one story tall. The former office building now houses apartments. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Moravian College

Moravian College a private liberal arts college, and the associated Moravian Theological Seminary are located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States, in the Lehigh Valley region. The College traces its founding to 1742 by Moravians, descendants of followers of the Bohemian Reformation , the 17th century Moravian bishop, though it did not receive a charter to grant baccalaureate degrees until 1863.

Bethlehem Union Station

Bethlehem Union Station is a former train station located in the South Side neighborhood of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1924 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Reading Company, replacing an earlier station built in 1867. Passenger service to Philadelphia on the SEPTA Regional Rail Bethlehem Line lasted until 1981. The station was renovated in 2002 and used for medical clinics beginning in 2003. It is owned by St. Luke's Hospital.

Bethlehem Works

Bethlehem Works is a 120-acre development site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, based on land formerly owned by Bethlehem Steel. The company discontinued its steelmaking activities at the main Bethlehem plant in 1995 after about 140 years of metal production. With the closing of its local operations, Bethlehem Steel decided to help redevelop the South Side of Bethlehem, and hired outside consultants to develop concept plans on the reuse of the property. The plan was to rename the site "Bethlehem Works" and to use the land for cultural, recreational, educational, entertainment and retail development including the Smithsonian Institution an educational and research institution.

Northampton Community College

Northampton Community College is a community college with campuses in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, USA, just outside the city of Bethlehem in the Lehigh Valley region of the state, and in Tannersville, Pennsylvania in neighboring Monroe County. The college, founded in 1967, also has satellite locations in the south side of Bethlehem and Hawley. Northampton grants associate degrees, certificates and diplomas in more than 100 fields including arts and humanities, business and technology, education and allied health. It is one of the largest employers in the Lehigh Valley and a major educator of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, emergency responders, radiologic technologists, dental hygienists, veterinary technologists, funeral service directors, chefs and early childhood educators for the region. The college is also one of the largest providers of workforce training, adult literacy programs, and non-credit classes in a four-county region and the only community college in Pennsylvania to offer on-campus housing. Although the college now serves more than 34,000 students a year in credit and non-credit programs, it has maintained a low student/faculty ratio . An online learning program makes it possible for students to earn degrees at Northampton from anywhere in the world. International students also study on campus, and the college offers students and faculty the opportunity to study abroad. One in four graduates of public high schools in Northampton County and one in six graduates of public high schools in Monroe County choose to begin their higher education at NCC, or "NACC" , as some students call it in reference to the college's original name, Northampton County Area Community College. The student body is diverse in terms of age, ethnicity, income and academic interest. Approximately 65% of students continue their education immediately after graduation. The rest enter the workforce. The college's placement rate almost always tops 90%. Full-time students taking between 12 and 18 credit hours are charged a flat rate for tuition and fees ($1995 for residents of Northampton County.) Students registered for fewer than 12 credit hours are charged a per-credit hour rate ($133 for residents of Northampton County.) The college awards more than $36 million in financial aid each year and disburses more private scholarship aid than any other community college in Pennsylvania. Northampton Community College's participation in the national Achieving the Dream initiative reflects the College's commitment not only to improve access to higher education for first-generation college students, but also to improve college completion rates. NCC is proud to be among the "leader colleges" in Achieving the Dream. NCC is also recognized as a leader in the workplace. In March 2013 Northampton was ranked as the top workplace among large employers in the Lehigh Valley based on results of employee surveys conducted by the national research firm WorkplaceDynamics.
