Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is located in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona on the former site of the Loloma Transit Station (N Marshall Way and E 1st St), and opened in January 2015. The two-story, 43,000-square-foot museum features the art, culture and history of 19 states in the American West, including Arizona. According to museum Director Mike Fox, “We are not a museum of objects, but a museum of ideas.” Originally the vision of Herb Drinkwater (1936-97), Mayor of Scottsdale from 1980-96, the museum is owned by the city of Scottsdale and operated by a nonprofit called Scottsdale Museum of the West. The architectural firm Studio MA, based in Clifton NJ and Phoenix, designed the museum, landscape architects Colwell Shelor of Phoenix the surroundings. Built at a cost of $11.4 million, both interior and exterior spaces are LEED Gold Standard certified. The building houses eight exhibit spaces, a 135 seat multi-sensory and multimedia theater/auditorium, a gift shop and a sculpture courtyard. Heritage Hall presents photos and bios of influential Westerners such as Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, Billy the Kid, notorious thief and gunfighter, and numerous others.

Scottsdale Airport

Scottsdale Airport is nine miles north of downtown Scottsdale, in Maricopa County, Arizona. Most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, but Scottsdale Airport is SDL to the FAA and SCF to the IATA (which assigned SDL to Midlanda Airport in Sundsvall, Sweden). Federal Aviation Administration records say the airport had 444,798 passenger boardings in calendar year 2005 and 266 enplanements in 2006. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2007-2011 called Scottsdale a reliever airport. It is one of the busiest single-runway facilities in the nation, with about 202,000 operations in 2004. The airport averages about 10,000 passengers a year. The airport offers clearance, ground and tower services from 1300Z to 0400Z daily. Neighbors complaints about aircraft noise around the airport increased beginning in 2004, peaking in 2005 with over 15,000 complaints being logged. It is unlikely that the airport would close, due to federal grant assurances, and its tremendous economic impact.

Scottsdale Fashion Square

Scottsdale Fashion Square is an upscale, super-regional luxury shopping mall located in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is the largest shopping mall in Arizona and the American Southwest, with approximately 2 million square feet of retail space, and is among the top 30 largest malls in the country. It is one of the top 10 most profitable malls in the country with over $740 sales per square foot, more than $400 over the national average. The mall is located on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Camelback Road in Scottsdale, Arizona, and has been owned by Westcor, a subsidiary of Macerich, since 2002. With the explosion of new retail developments and dining options in the nearby vicinity, the term Scottsdale Fashion Square has become more generalized in recent years to include the retail shopping districts adjacent to the complex, including the Scottsdale Waterfront and Southbridge.

Scottsdale Stadium

Scottsdale Stadium is a baseball field located in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States. The stadium was built in 1992 and holds 12,000 people. It is the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants. Scottsdale was the home of the Phoenix Firebirds of the Pacific Coast League from 1992 until 1997, when the team moved to Fresno, California, and became the Grizzlies, in order to make room for the National Leagues Arizona Diamondbacks, who began play in 1998. Also, the Arizona United SC of the United Soccer League will play at Scottsdale in 2015. The stadium underwent a $23.1 million renovation in 2006. In return, the San Francisco Giants agreed to play at the stadium for an additional 20 years, through 2025, with an option to extend the lease to 2035. Funding for the project included: $13.3 million from the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority; $6.67 million from Maricopa County Stadium District funds forwarded to AZSTA by the MCSD; $3.1 million from the City of Scottsdale. Key renovations to Scottsdale Stadium included: Construction of one full practice field and one half practice field east of the stadium; Expansion of the Giants Stadium Clubhouse; Creation of new deck and terrace seating in the right field berm area; Construction of a walkway connecting the left field berm and the right field berm area. Key renovations to Indian School Park included: Renovation of four full practice fields and one half practice field; Expansion of the Giants Minor League Clubhouse; Reconstructed batting cages. The Giants hold their major league and minor league training operation at the two facilities. Scottsdale Stadium is consistently one of the top attended venues in Arizonas Cactus League. The Scottsdale Charros organize and promote San Francisco spring training in the city. The stadium is also host of the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, and hosts the Fall Leagues championship game at the end of November. During the summer the stadium is home the Arizona League Giants of the Arizona League. The stadium is also available to rent and hosts numerous parties, events and meetings throughout the year. The stadium was built on the site of the old Scottsdale Stadium, built in 1956, which also hosted the Giants as well as the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Oakland As. The ballpark was constructed in less than a year to avoid having the Giants play their spring games at another location.

WestWorld

WestWorld of Scottsdale, popularly shortened to WestWorld, is a premier, nationally recognized, multi-use events facility serving the Scottsdale, Arizona community and visitors. It is located on 386 acres at the base of the McDowell Mountains. It was built in stages starting in 1987 and consists of the following facilities: A 120,460-square-foot Multi-Purpose Tent, completed in 2005 and site of the annual Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction as well as conventions, trade shows and other events. It is the largest clear span tent structure in North America and measures up to 89 feet from floor to ceiling. The 6,340-seat Equidome Arena, with 39,150 square feet of space. Wendell Arena, a 6,756-seat stadium used for horse shows, rodeos, and sometimes high-school football. Eight outdoor arenas Brett's Barn, with 8,210 square feet of space plus another 2,400 square feet on the open deck. The complex also contains various parking lots for cars and RVs.

Pinnacle Presbyterian Church

Pinnacle Presbyterian Church is a Presbyterian Church congregation of more than 1,400 members located in north Scottsdale, Arizona. Pinnacle started October 1, 1989, in the Glenn Moor Clubhouse in Troon Country Club with 25 committed, visionary members. After four years, the congregation had grown to 110 members and moved from the over-crowded country club into a chapel built on 25 acres of land purchased by and donated to the church. On Palm Sunday 1994, founding pastor Dr. Larry Corbett stood outside the chapel and called the people to worship. There were more than 200 people present. Dr. Corbett brought years of experience with him as the organizing minister, was familiar with the area and understood what a new church needed to grow. His years at Pinnacle were characterized by commitment, compassion and passion for the gospel of Christ. In the fall of 1995, Pinnacle Presbyterian Preschool opened with two teachers and eight students. Associate Pastor for Christian Education, the Rev. Janet Arbesman, developed a church school in the five classrooms. Today, it has more than 26 teachers and staff and 168 students. The Rev. Dr. Duane Holloran replaced the Rev. Arbesman in 1998. Coming from a clinical psychology background, he developed family life programs and strengthened the adult education program through Bible classes. Lisa Armstrong assumed leadership of the Christian Education of children and youth when the church school children attendance called for full-time leadership. After Dr. Holloran retired, the congregation asked the Rev. Francis Park to step in as a part-time pastor while the Associate Pastor search continued. In December 2003, the Rev. Mac Schafer received a call to become Associate Pastor. Rev. Schafer and family came from Lawrenceville, N.J. He was responsible for ministry with families, adult education and a shared pastoral ministry with the other clergy staff. Phase two and three of the building program provided a sanctuary that accommodated growth, a memorial garden, much needed off-street parking and fellowship hall. Next in the construction plan came five additional classrooms and an atelier for the preschool and church school, choir facilities, more offices for staff and a sanctuary that seats 800 worshipers. In 2006, the congregation authorized construction of the next phase including additional church classrooms, a youth building, an addition to the fellowship hall and additional parking spaces. Realizing the need to focus on the increasing number of youth in the church, the congregation called the Rev. Kristin Willett as Associate Pastor for Youth and their Families in 2007. She and her husband, Brandon, were recent graduates of Princeton Theological Seminary, N.J. In August 2007, Dr. Corbett retired from Pinnacle and accepted a call to a church in Honolulu, Hawaii. A search committee of the session appointed Rev. Schafer interim pastor. At the same time they increased the hours of Rev. Park to help meet the needs of the congregation. In April 2009, the congregation called Dr. Wesley Avram to be the new Pastor/Head of Staff at Pinnacle after a nearly two-year search.

Mount McDowell

Mount McDowell , more commonly referred to as Red Mountain, is located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, just north of Mesa, Arizona. It is named after General Irvin McDowell, a Union officer in the Civil War. Its elevation is 2,832 feet . It is not the same landmark as the McDowell Peak, which is 11 miles away to the northwest. Mount McDowell is often called "Red Mountain" or "FireRock", due to its composition of sandstone conglomerate which gives it a distinctive red color that glows during sunset. The deep cleft on its western side is known as "Gunsight" because of its resemblance to the narrow slot in a fort used for firing at attackers. The mountain is very photogenic but it's difficult to photograph up close. The mountain is located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, and has been declared off-limits to hikers, climbers and photographers since the early 1980s, due to vandalism. The eastern side, along Power Road/Bush Highway, has areas where you can pull off the road, and there's a picnic area just north of Granite Reef Dam . The western side of the mountain is along SR 87 , which is a busy four-lane road with narrow shoulders. There are several blocked roads onto the Salt River Indian Reservation, where you can pull off for a minute if the traffic is light.

Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake is a reservoir that was formed by the Horseshoe Dam on the Verde River in the U.S. state of Arizona. This lake is located inside the Tonto National Forest, as such the facilities located here are managed by that authority. Located upstream and north of Bartlett Lake, Horseshoe Lake is the first of the Salt River Project lakes to be very low when irrigation and domestic water requirements dictate. As a result, it can be virtually dry for long periods of time causing the boat ramp to be entirely out of the water. To reach Horseshoe Lake, take Cave Creek road north out of Phoenix to Bartlett Dam road. About 10 miles before your reach Bartlett Lake take a left on Horseshoe Dam Rd. This road will be a washboard with a few pot holes and possibly a small stream to cross during the rainy seasons. This road will lead you right to the lake.

Talking Stick Resort

Talking Stick Resort is a luxury hotel and casino resort located on the Salt-River Pima Maricopa Indian Reservation near Scottsdale, Arizona. The hotel tower, which was designed by FFKR Architects, has 15 stories and stands at 200 feet and six inches. Talking Stick Resort is independently owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community . In total, Talking Stick Resort occupies 55.6 acres with an additional 20 acres for extra parking space. The 240,000 square feet property includes a 98,000 square feet casino, 496 guest rooms, 21 meeting rooms, six entertainment lounges and five restaurants. It also contains a 25,000 square feet Grand Ballroom, a spa spanning 13,000 square feet, a fitness center, Showroom that seats 650 and four pools. In April 2014, Talking Stick Resort renovated its pool area, adding a new lounge pool and a stage for outdoor concerts. Entertainers who have performed on the poolside stage include Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Collective Soul, 311 and Staind.

Granite Reef Diversion Dam

The Granite Reef Diversion Dam is a concrete diversion dam located 22 miles Northeast of Phoenix, Arizona, on the Salt River. The dam is 1,000 feet long, 29 feet high and was built between 1906 and 1908 for the Salt River Project, who currently operates the dam. It replaced the older Arizona Dam which was washed out in a flood in 1905. The dam diverts most all water in the Salt River into the Arizona and South Canals serving metropolitan Phoenix with irrigation and drinking water. The Salt River below Granite Reef is usually dry except following consistent and heavy upstream precipitation. When upstream lakes are full, minor and moderate releases are accomplished via floodgates at either end of the dam. The dam is designed to be overtopped by major releases, which can occur every 10 to 40 years. The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation and operated by the Salt River Project.
