University of Missouri

The University of Missouri is a public research university located in the U.S. state of Missouri. In 1839, the university was founded in Columbia as the first public institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River. As the largest university in Missouri, MU enrolls 35,441 students offering over 300 degree programs in 19 academic colleges in the 2014–15 year. The university is the flagship of the University of Missouri System, which maintains campuses in Rolla, Kansas City, and St. Louis. MU is one of the nations top-tier R1 institutions and one of the 34 public universities to be members of the Association of American Universities. There are more than 270,000 MU alumni living worldwide with almost one half continuing to reside in Missouri. The University of Missouri was ranked #99 in the 2015 U.S. News World Report among the national universities. The campus of the University of Missouri is 1,262 acres just south of Downtown Columbia and is maintained as a botanical garden. The historical campus is centered on Francis Quadrangle, a historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1908, the worlds first school of journalism was founded by Walter Williams as the Missouri School of Journalism. The University of Missouri Research Reactor Center is the worlds most powerful university research reactor. It is one of only six public universities in the United States with a school of medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture, and law all on one campus. The university also owns the University of Missouri Health Care system, which operates four hospitals in Mid-Missouri. The only athletic program that operates a Division I FBS football team in Missouri is known as the Missouri Tigers and competes as a member of the Southeastern Conference. The schools mascot, Truman the Tiger, is named after Missourian and former U.S. president Harry S. Truman. According to the NCAA, the American tradition of homecoming was established at the University in 1911; the tradition has since been adopted nationwide.

Museum of Art and Archaeology

The Museum of Art and Archaeology, in Columbia, Missouri, is the art museum of the University of Missouri. It is located at Mizzou North on Business Loop. The Museums galleries are free and open to the public. The galleries are open from 9 am to 4 pm, Tuesday-Friday and noon to 4 pm Saturdays and Sundays. The galleries are closed on Mondays and University holidays. The Museum of Art and Archaeology receives support from the Missouri Arts Council.

David Gordon House and Collins Log Cabin

The David Gordon House and Collins Log Cabin were built in 1818 as some of the first permanent dwellings in Columbia, Missouri. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The House has since been relocated from Stephens Lake Park to the campus of the Boone County Historical Society.

Maplewood

Maplewood is an Italianate residence in Columbia, Missouri, United States, built by Slater Ensor Lenoir and his wife Margaret Bradford Lenoir in 1877. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1970, the City of Columbia purchased the home and 60 acres of surrounding land. This became the Frank G. Nifong Memorial Park. Today, the home is operated jointly by the Boone County Historical Society and City of Columbia Parks and Recreation.

MKT Trail

The MKT Nature and Fitness Trail is a recreational rail trail in Columbia, Missouri, that runs nine miles in the right-of-way of the former Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. Developed from 1982 onward, it is a spur of the longest rail trail in the United States, the Katy Trail. It is open for use by hikers, joggers, and cyclists year-round, from sunrise to sunset, with snow covering in the winter offering users cross-country skiing opportunities. The trail is made up of "limestone pug" , creating a hard, flat surface. The trail follows Flat Branch Creek and Hinkson Creek for much of their distance and is part of a larger system of recreational pathways in the Columbia Metropolitan Area.

McAlester Arboretum

The McAlester Arboretum is an arboretum located in McAlester Park at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, USA. It should not be confused with the Garrard Ardeneum in McAlester, Oklahoma, which is sometimes called the McAlester Arboretum. The arboretum contains more than 100 trees of 43 varieties. Plans include adding several genera of trees and shrubs important to the Mid-Missouri region.

Mizzou Botanic Garden

The Mizzou Botanic Garden contains thousands of plants within the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, USA. The Garden includes famous icons, such as Thomas Jeffersons original grave marker and the Columns of Academic Hall, and is open year-round, only asking for a small donation to visit. Tree Trails: There are three self-guided walks designed to highlight the trees on campus. Wildlife Pond: In the 1920s, a spring north of Stephens Hall was transformed into a pond surrounded by a Japanese garden with an arched bridge and Pagoda gate. Recently several water plants native to Missouri, including Water Lilies, Pickerel Weed, Copper Iris and Thalia have been added.

Francis Quadrangle

David R. Francis Quadrangle is the historical center of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. It is named after Missouri governor David R. Francis, and is generally just called "The Quad". Within the quad are two of the most recognizable symbols of the school, Jesse Hall and The Columns. Academic Hall, the first building on MUs campus, was built in the middle of the present day quad. It burned on January 9, 1892, leaving only the famous six columns that now stand in the center of Francis Quadrangle. The Quad is the center of MUs Red Campus and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The quad and five buildings are perhaps the best surviving work of architect Morris Frederick Bell.

Jesse Hall

Jesse Hall is the main administration building for the University of Missouri. Built in 1893 after Academic Hall burned to the ground, the building is one of the major symbols of the University. It is located at the south end of the David R. Francis Quadrangle, often called simply "The Quad." Jesse Auditorium, a popular entertainment venue for touring acts, is located at the east end of the hall.

Red Campus

Red Campus is the historical core of the University of Missouri campus in Columbia primarily gathered around the David R. Francis Quadrangle. The area takes its name from the red bricks that make up most of the buildings including Jesse Hall and Switzler Hall. The campus contains 18 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and area is nearly congruent with the Francis Quadrangle National Historic District. The Red Campus stands in contrast to the neo-gothic White Campus, which it borders on the east.

Hearnes Center

Hearnes Center is a 13,611-seat multi-purpose arena in Columbia, Missouri. The arena opened in 1972. It is currently home to the Missouri Tigers wrestling and volleyball teams as well as the schools gymnastics and indoor track field teams. It was home to the University of Missouri Tigers basketball team before Mizzou Arena opened in 2004. Groundbreaking for the Hearnes Center occurred in 1969, and the stadium was officially dedicated on August 4, 1972. The stadium got its name from former Missouri governor and 1952 Mizzou graduate Warren Hearnes. The cost of the building project was $10.75 million. Prior to the opening of the Hearnes Center, the Missouri basketball team played its home games at Brewer Fieldhouse, which was built in 1929 and has since been remodeled into a modern recreation center. Hearnes quickly became one of the toughest places to play during the 1980s, when players such as Steve Stipanovich, Jon Sundvold, Derrick Chievous and Doug Smith suited up for Norm Stewart. Several factors contributed to this reputation: the steep banking of the seating area, its flat roof and angling of its upper sections, and The Antlers, whose presence in Section A-16 made them the bane of many an opposition. Decibel meters were added to the corners of the arena in the early 1990s in addition to new scoreboards, and it was not uncommon to see them go well above 110 dB during conference games, and regularly cresting 125 dB against Kansas or during 2002s famed "Fire Code Game" against Iowa, where well over 14,500 people packed the building to see then-#2 Mizzou be stunned by Steve Alfords club. In its later life, the building saw several changes: a new floor was installed in 1998, rear-projection video monitors replaced the matrix boards at the turn of the new millennium, and the student seating plan was also altered. Before Quin Snyder came to coach the Tigers, student seating was scattered throughout the arena and distributed via who picked up tickets first, and while the largest amount sat along one sideline, others sat as high as the D sections, which early in the arenas life doubled as lecture halls . Attempting to create an atmosphere similar to his former employers, Duke, Snyder mandated that all students be moved to one end of the court, where bleachers would replace the old seats and primacy would be given to his new "Zou Crew" club, with all other seating areas becoming general admission. The move was criticized for changing the atmosphere at Missouri games to something less unique while enabling more seats to be sold at a higher cost, but was duplicated at Mizzou Arena. The Hearnes Center also contains a field house that is home to the indoor track and field team, as well as one of the countrys largest blood drives. Each fall, students donate blood as part of the schools Homecoming week festivities. In 2005, students and Columbia residents donated over 5,000 units of blood. During the school year, the parking lot adjacent to the main building serves as student parking for the many on-campus residents.

Mizzou Arena

Mizzou Arena is an indoor arena located on the south side of the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The facility, home to the schools mens and womens basketball teams, opened in November 2004 and replaced the Hearnes Center as the schools flagship indoor sports facility. The arena also serves as a concert venue or speaking venue for bigger named guests, such as Rascal Flatts, Luke Bryan and The Eagles. The arched-roof building seats 15,061, and is located just south of Hearnes and Memorial Stadium. The arena is host to Missouri State High School Activities Association championships for basketball and wrestling. The arena was briefly known as Paige Sports Arena. Faurot Field

Faurot Field , at Memorial Stadium is the home field of the University of Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Missouri. It is primarily used for football. In 1972, Memorial Stadiums playing surface was named Faurot Field in honor of longtime coach Don Faurot. During the offseason, soccer goals are set up in the end zones and it is used for intramural matches. It used to host the annual "Providence Bowl" game between Hickman and Rock Bridge high schools this tradition stopped in 2012 when Missouri joined the SEC and conference rules prohibited the game. In the past has been home to the MSHSAA football championships, now held in St. Louis . It is the second largest sports facility by capacity in the state of Missouri, second to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. When full, Faurot Field would be the ninth-largest city in the state of Missouri. The stadium is a typical horseshoe-shaped stadium, with seating added on in the "open" endzone. The horseshoe is completed by a grass berm in the curved end, which is used for general admission on game days. The berm is famous for the giant block "M" made of painted white stones located behind the endzone. There is road between the field and the stands around the entire length of the horseshoe, taking the place of the track, removed in the mid-1990s.

Greenwood

Greenwood is a well preserved Federal style farm house in Columbia, Missouri. Constructed in 1839, it is one of the oldest remaining structures in Boone County, Missouri. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today the house is under private ownership.

Missouri Theatre (Columbia, Missouri)

The Missouri Theatre, is a concert and entertainment venue in downtown Columbia, Missouri, occupying most of a city block between 9th street between Locust and Elm Streets. It was designed after the Opéra Garnier by the Boller Brothers, built in 1928, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is Columbias only surviving pre-Depression movie palace and vaudeville stage. In 2011, the University of Missouri began a three-year lease of the facility. The Missouri Theatre is the resident home of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, and is also frequently used by University of Missouri and civic groups. As of July 1, 2014, The University of Missouri took over ownership of the Missouri Theatre.

Ragtag Cinema

Ragtag Cinema is a non-profit independent movie theater located in Columbia, Missouri. The theater was founded by Paul Sturtz and David Wilson in May 2000. The theater strives to champion film and other media arts to stimulate and encourage the culture of the community. It does so by spotlighting film as an art form, promoting media literacy, education and new ideas as well as supporting local artists. The interior of the theater has art hung on the walls which is changed periodically. Instead of traditional theater seating, the first location housed couches and chairs used to accompany 75 guests for its one screen. Recently, a new location was opened. Uprise Bakery takes the place of traditional snack bar, with dinner and dessert available, as well as a full bar.

Memorial Union (University of Missouri)

Memorial Union serves as a community center for the University of Missouri by providing meeting rooms, technology centers, dining facilities, and playing host to many special events. The facility was built in three stages between 1923 and 1963. It was designed by Jamieson and Spearl, which designed most of the campus buildings built between 1902 and the 1950s.

The Blue Note

The Blue Note is a music venue in Columbia, Missouri. It was established in 1980 by Richard King and Phil Costello. The original Blue Note was located at 912 Business Loop 70 East and moved to its Ninth Street location in the early '90s. It is famous for the legal case Bensusan Restaurant Corp. v. King over naming use on the internet. It has hosted numerous musical acts, including Phish, Widespread Panic, REM, Husker Du , Uncle Tupelo, Meat Puppets, Chuck Berry, The Replacements, The Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr., Primus, Black Flag, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Violent Femmes, Soul Asylum, Shinedown, Dave Matthews Band, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Young the Giant, and Arctic Monkeys, and holds a free five-part concert series every summer called "Ninth Street Summerfest". The building was formerly a vaudeville theater and is a contributing property to the North Ninth Street Historic District.

First Christian Church

The First Christian Church in Columbia, Missouri was built in 1893 at 101 North Tenth Street. T.N. Bell of Chicago, Illinois was the chief architect. This is the second church building to stand at this site. The building is still functioning church today and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Missouri United Methodist Church

The Missouri United Methodist Church is a United Methodist church in downtown Columbia, Missouri on Ninth Street. The building was constructed in 1929 out of Indiana Bedford limestone. The sanctuary seats 1000 people. Because of its architectural quality and contributions to religion in the state, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Stained Glass windows, including the large History of Methodism window at the rear of the sanctuary, are some of the most detailed in Mid-Missouri. The Missouri United Methodist Church has a long music tradition. It has a large Skinner pipe organ . The Church hosts an annual Missouri United Church Concert Series featuring the Columbia Chorale, the 9th Street Philharmonic Orchestra as well as other well-known groups such as Chanticleer and the Vienna Boys Choir. The church is currently pastored by Senior Pastor, Rev. Amy Gearhart, and associate pastors Rev. Molly Moore, Rev. Larry Williams, and Rev. Trista Soendker-Nicholson. .

Columbia National Guard Armory

The National Guard Armory in Columbia, Missouri was built as a Works Progress Administration project in 1940. The art deco building on Walnut Street sits on the north side of downtown Columbia. Today the building is owned by the city and used as a youth recreation center.

Frederick Apartments

Frederick Apartments is a well preserved Classical Revival-style apartment building in downtown Columbia, Missouri, across the street from the University of Missouri. Constructed in 1928 with 39 apartments the building has functioned as originally intended since that time. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 under architectural criteria. It remains one of the largest early twentieth century apartment buildings in Columbia and one of only four remaining in the vicinity. The building is a memorial to Frederick Niedermeyer, Jr., a World War I pilot who perished in a plane crash. As of 2013, the owners are in the process of restoring the building. It was designed by architect David Frederick Wallace, who also designed the Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.

Pierce Pennant Motor Hotel

The Pierce Pennant Motor Hotel in Columbia, Missouri is a historic hotel that is located on what once was U.S. Route 40 and is now Interstate 70. The hotel was constructed in 1929 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The hotel was also a gas station and garage, and was owned by Pierce Petroleum Company, a subsidiary of Standard Oil. Initially the hotel and garage complex was to be one of several along U.S. Hwy 40, each to be spaced about 150 miles apart from New York to San Francisco. The buildings are in a Colonial Revival architectural style. During WWII the building was used by Stephens College to train women aviators. In 1959, the complex was Candle Light Lodge and converted to senior citizen housing.

The Stephens College South Campus Historic District is a National Historic District on the campus of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and includes the historic core of Stephens College in Eastern Downtown Columbia, Missouri. The District includes Senior Hall, Hickman Hall, Columbia Hall, and Wood Hall.

John N. and Elizabeth Taylor House

The John N. and Elizabeth Taylor House is a historic home in Columbia, Missouri which has been restored and once operated as a bed and breakfast.The house was constructed in 1909 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The home was featured on HGTV special called "If walls could talk." In 2010 the house became a contributing property of the newly formed West Broadway Historic District.

Eighth and Broadway Historic District

The Eighth and Broadway Historic District, also known as the Miller Building, Matthews Hardware, and Metropolitan Building, is one of the 7 historic district in Columbia, Missouri. The district is made up of three contributing properties and is located at the intersection of Eight and Broadways in Downtown Columbia. Though much of the district was constructed in 1894, it wasn't placed on the National Register of Historic Places until 2003. Today the area holds loft apartments and several local business including: Cool Stuff, Hot Box Cookies, Sycamore, Peace Nook, and Geisha.

Samuel H. and Isabel Smith Elkins House

The Samuel H. and Isabel Smith Elkins House is a historic home in Columbia, Missouri. The home is located just north of Downtown Columbia, Missouri on 9th street and today contains an artisan glassworks. The home was built in the Italianate style during the 19th century. The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Switzler Hall

Switzler Hall is an academic hall on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The building was completed in 1872, and it is located on the west side of the David R. Francis Quadrangle. Switzler Hall is the oldest academic building and second oldest structure on campus after the Chancellor's Residence. The building was named after Colonel William Franklin Switzler, editor and publisher of the Missouri Statesman and supporter of the University. Today the building houses the Department of Communication, Women's and Gender Studies, and the Special Degrees Program. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jewell Cemetery State Historic Site

Jewell Cemetery State Historic Site is a publicly owned property in Columbia, Missouri, maintained as a state historic site by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Among the notable persons buried in the cemetery, which holds the remains of more than 40 descendants of George A. Jewell, are Missouri governor Charles Henry Hardin and the educator William Jewell. The property became part of the state parks system in 1970.

Tiger Hotel

The Tiger Hotel is a hotel in Columbia, Missouri. Built as a hotel in 1928, the building later housed a retirement home and banquet center. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2012, the building was fully restored and reopened as a boutique hotel. Currently, the Tiger Hotel remains fully functional as a luxurious boutique hotel and maintains a prestigious 4-diamond rating.
