Michigan Women's Hall of Fame

The Michigan Womens Hall of Fame honors distinguished women, both historical and contemporary, who have been associated with the U.S. state of Michigan. The hall of fame was founded in 1973 by Gladys Beckwith and is sponsored by the Michigan Womens Studies Association. The formation of the Association and the Hall was prompted by five professors from Michigan State University who were teaching a Women in American Society course. Nominations to the hall of fame are accepted from the public and are open to women who rose to prominence or were born in Michigan as well as those who have lived in the state for an extended period. A screening committee ranks the nominations by merit and a second committee makes the final determination, selecting on average eight to ten women annually. Inductees are honored at a ceremony and dinner in October and are presented with a bronze Lifetime Achievement Award. As of 2013, the Hall of Fame contains over 275 inductees. The Michigan Womens Historical Center and Hall of Fame is housed in the 1903-built Cooley-Haze House, located at 213 W. Malcolm X St., directly south of downtown Lansing, Michigan. The museum is surrounded by Cooley Gardens and contains a resource library as well as exhibit galleries dedicated to preserving and presenting Michigan womens history and art. The house was opened to the public on June 10, 1987. The Center also contains the Belen Gallery, which features art from Michigan women.

Lansing River Trail

Lansing River Trail is a multiple use, non-motorized trail approximately 13 miles long. It runs along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River between Michigan State University and Dietrich Park in northern Lansing. The trail has a western extension that begins where it splits off at River Point park just south of downtown Lansing and ends in Moores Park. The River Trail South stretches along Sycamore Creek from Potter Park to Maguire Park in southeast Lansing. The stretch from Hawk Island County Park to Maguire Park was completed in 2008. The River Trail is also home to a number of special events, including the Common Ground Music Festival, the Annual Mayor's Walk, Michigan Run, the Capital City River Run and a number of other city-sponsored activities. The trail is currently being extended into Delhi Township to connect with an existing trail in Holt, as well as east to west across south Lansing.

Lansing Center

Lansing Center, officially the Lansing Convention Center, is the primary and largest convention center in Lansing, Michigan. The center is located along Michigan Avenue, with its western facade fronting the Grand River. The center's location includes a riverfront plaza that has been home to outdoor events. It is also directly connected to the Lansing Radisson Hotel by an enclosed, climate-controlled skybridge spanning the Grand River. Since 1996, Lansing Center has been managed by the non-profit Lansing Entertainment & Public Facilities Authority . The center has a total square footage of 124,118 , of which 71,760 ft² is column-free exhibit space. Designed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum , the center was opened in 1987, and renovated and expanded in 1995 with Hobbs + Black Associates as the renovation architects. The center currently holds 270,000 square feet of space, including a main exhibition hall, meeting rooms, conference centers, banquet facilities, a restaurants and lounge, a full kitchen, and a 500-space underground parking garage. The center underwent its first extensive renovation since the 1995 addition in 2007 and 2008. The renovation included cosmetic upgrades, as well as structural upgrades.

Michigan State Capitol

The Michigan State Capitol is the building housing the legislative and executive branches of the government of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in the portion of the state capital of Lansing which lies in Ingham County. The present structure, at the intersection of Capitol and Michigan Avenues, is a National Historic Landmark that currently houses the chambers and offices of the Michigan Legislature as well as the ceremonial offices of the Governor of Michigan and Lieutenant Governor. Historically, this is the third building to house the Michigan government. The first state capitol was located in Detroit, the original capital of Michigan, and was relocated to Lansing in 1847, due to the need to develop the western portions of the state and for easy defense from British troops stationed in Windsor, Ontario. The present capitol building, preceded by a temporary wood frame structure, was dedicated in January 1879, and is designed in a Neoclassical style, more specifically the Italianate style. The capitol was rededicated in 1992 after a three-year restoration project.

Michigan State University Observatory

Michigan State University Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Michigan State University. It is located south of the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan, near the corner of Forest Rd and College Rd. It has a Cassegrain telescope in its single dome. Built by Boller and Chivens, the Michigan State University telescope was commissioned in 1969 and entered regular operation in 1970. In 1974, what was at the time a state-of-the-art Raytheon Microcomputer was installed to function as a data gathering and control system. Originally, single channel photoelectric photometry and photography using plates or film were the means of acquiring data. The observatory was closed from 1981 until 1986, at a time when the university was having financial difficulties. It was reopened in the spring of 1986 on the occasion of the return of Comet Halley and has been in regular operation ever since. Since the 1980s, a CCD camera has been employed as the main instrument and the Raytheon computer has been retired. The International Astronomical Union has assigned the MSU Observatory identification code 766.

J.W. Knapp Company Building

The J.W. Knapp Company Building is a historic five-story, 190,000-square-foot Streamline Moderne building in Lansing, Michigan, United States. Designed by Orlie Munson of the Bowd-Munson Company, which also designed several other Art Deco landmarks in Lansing, including the Ottawa Street Power Station, it was constructed by the Christman Company in 1937 through 1938. The curvilinear look of the streamlined structure comes from huge plates of concrete faced with enamel, called "Maul Macotta", a copyrighted product of the Maul Macotta Company and prismatic glass brick windows. Alternating horizontal bands of yellow macotta and glass block are interrupted by vertical blue macotta pylons, rising from the building's four principal entrances. The pylons are pierced by windows. The entrance portals, display window aprons, and decorative banding are dark blue macotta. Red, yellow and blue spandrels, incorporating the letter "K" as a design element, decorate the entrance portals. The building housed the main department store of the Lansing-based J.W. Knapp Company. When completed in 1939, it was hailed in the contemporary press as "the most modern building in the Midwest". Today, it is considered to be one of the finest intact examples of Streamline Art Moderne commercial buildings in the Midwest, notable for its size, clarity of design and brilliant colors. The western end of the building was enlarged in 1949. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 21, 1983. The Eyde Company, a local developer, purchased the building in 1983, and converted most of its selling floors to state government offices, renaming it the "Knapp's Center". The state offices moved out in 2003. The building is currently vacant. During the holiday season, the storefront windows are used by the MSU Museum to display historic Santa Claus advertising cutouts in connection with the city's Silver Bells Parade. Various proposals for redevelopment of the building have been under consideration for since 2003, including a failed bid in 2004 to house the Michigan Department of Community Health, and a 2008 proposal to convert the building to a performing arts center. During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Michigan State University interior design program used the redevelopment of the building as the basis for its senior thesis. Resulting proposals included a variety of commercial and residential uses. In 2010, plans were announced to redevelop the building for mixed residential, office and commercial use, subject to obtaining necessary governmental permits and obtaining tax credits, loans and grants, with construction initially planned to commence in 2011 and to be completed in 2013. The bands of glass block which give the building an external appearance of lightness, present a barrier to redevelopment due to the lack of outside views for prospective tenants. The redevelopment proposals include cutting a four-story glass atrium covered with a skylight from the second through fifth floors to give the interior more light, as well as replacement of the Maul Macotta panels, which have suffered water damage due to a design flaw in the metal banding not apparent in 1937 when they were installed, with modern metal or concrete counterparts. Construction eventually began in December 2012, with a 14-month construction schedule and a $36.5 million budget.

Library of Michigan

The Library of Michigan is a state-run library and historical center located in Lansing, Michigan that was created to provide one perpetual state institution to collect and preserve Michigan publications, conduct reference and research, and support libraries statewide. Previously under the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries state agency and, as of 2009, under the Michigan Department of Education, the library is Michigan’s official state library agency. A notable side-project of the Library of Michigan is the Michigan eLibrary, one of the first online libraries on the Internet. MeL provides full-text articles, books, Michigan history materials, and evaluated web sites to residents of the state of Michigan. In 2003, the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees elected as chair Elaine Didier, dean of Oakland Universitys Kresge Library and professor at Oakland University.

Union Depot

The Union Depot is a former train station in Lansing, Michigan. The Union Depot began passenger service for the Michigan Central and Pere Marquette Railroads in 1902. The Detroit architectural firm of Spier and Rohns, which planned many Michigan Central stations, designed the building with chateauesque conical towers and cut stone arches. The depot closed in 1972. In 1978, restaurateur Peter Jubeck bought the building and transformed it into Clara's Lansing Station. Retaining the quarter-sawn oak interior and installing locally crafted stained glass windows, the restaurant has a unique and historical atmosphere. In 1994, Jubeck purchased an old Pullman sleeper rail car, renovating it, and attaching to the building, opening it in 1999 to add more seating space. Clara's Lansing Station was the sister restaurant of Clara's on the River located in the Michigan Central Depot in Battle Creek. The restaurant closed on June 26, 2016 after 26 years of operation. Later that year the building was purchased by Lansing-based Gillespie Group with plans to preserve the station for future reuse.

Michigan State University Pavilion

The MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education is a convention center located in East Lansing, Michigan on the campus of Michigan State University. It was built in 1996. It has 101,527 square feet of exhibit space. Facilities include a 2,000-seat indoor arena with 24,396 square feet of floor space, used for trade shows, concerts, sporting events, livestock shows and other events; a 364-seat auditorium for meetings and livestock auctions; and a 77,131-square-foot exhibit hall for trade shows, conventions and other events. The complex also contains 2,930 square feet of meeting rooms The complex also features a 10 kilowatt solar power photovoltaic system, a state-of-the-art sound system, a campground with space for 96 campsites; and parking for 1500 cars.

McLaren–Greater Lansing Hospital

McLaren Greater Lansing (MGL) (formerly Ingham Regional Medical Center) (IRMC) is a hospital in Lansing, Michigan. MGL is a subsidiary of the McLaren Health Care Corporation, which is an integrated managed care health care organization operating in Michigan. Both the College of Human Medicine and the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University are affiliated with MGLH. In January 2012 Ingham Regional Medical Center was renamed McLaren Greater Lansing. Before being recognized as McLaren Greater Lansing our hospital began as the Ingham County Tuberculosis Sanatorium. McLaren's dedication to the region began in the fall of 1913, when a 10-bed county facility opened its doors to care for those afflicted with tuberculosis. As Greater Lansing grew over the decades, so did the hospital. Wood and nails became girder and steel, wings became towers, and the 10-bed facility grew into what we are today: a two-campus testament to compassionate care and medical innovation. As they continue to pave the path into the future of medicine McLaren Greater Lansing has announced the construction of a new hospital. This $450 million dollar investment in the community is slated to open in 2021 and will consist of 9 stories, 18 operating rooms, 40 emergency room beds, and 240 hospital beds. McLaren Greater Lansing (then Ingham Regional Medical Center) participated in a pilot study of a bundled payment scheme between 1987 and 1989 which involved an orthopedic surgeon and a health maintenance organization (HMO). The surgeon and IRMC received a predetermined fee for any arthroscopic surgery performed, but they also provided a two-year warranty in that they promised to cover any post-surgery expenses instead of the HMO. The pilot study, in which "all parties benefitted financially," is cited as an example of a successful outcome with bundled payments. On July 28, 2011, Becker's Hospital Review listed Ingham Regional Medical Center's orthopedic hospital (now McLaren Orthopedic Hospital) under 60 Hospitals With Great Orthopedic Programs.

Sparrow Hospital

Sparrow Hospital is a 733-bed teaching hospital located in Lansing, Michigan that provides care for the greater Mid-Michigan region. The hospital is a subsidiary of Sparrow Health System, and is affiliated with the Colleges of Human Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine at nearby Michigan State University. Sparrow Hospital operates the only dedicated pediatric emergency room and the largest adult emergency room in the region. The emergency department is a level I trauma center, as verified by the American College of Surgeons. It is also a Joint Commission certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. Sparrow also has modern operating rooms, multiple helipads, an oncology center, heart and vascular center, and orthopedic department. In addition, 4,500 births are performed at Sparrow Hospital annually.
