Museum of Arts and Sciences

The Museum of Arts and Sciences, often referred to as MOAS, is a museum in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States. The museum is a member of the American Alliance of Museums and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. It is home to over 30,000 objects, making it one of the largest museums in central Florida. The Museum of Arts & Sciences is a not-for-profit educational institution founded in 1955 and chartered by the State of Florida in 1962. The Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Programs are sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the County of Volusia.In 1977, art historian Gary Russell Libby was hired as the Executive Director of the Museum of Arts and Sciences which became accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a Smithsonian Affiliate under Libby's leadership. The Museum grew from one location of 7,000 sq. ft. to 120,000 sq. ft. with three different locations. During his time as director, Libby organized and led the first international museum travel program in Florida. This annual program introduced cultural treasures in Mexico, Central America, South America, Europe, Scandinavia, North and Equatorial Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia to thousands of central Floridians who attended these interpreted educational and cultural expeditions.At his 2002 retirement, The Trustees of the Museum of Arts and Sciences named Libby as the first Director Emeritus and named the Lobby of the Museum as the "Gary R. Libby Entry Court." The newly rebuilt West Wing of the Museum opened on October 30, 2015. This expansive wing of MOAS is home to the Cuban Foundation Museum, the Karshan Center of Graphic Art, the Gillespy Gallery featuring African artifacts, the Marzullo Gallery featuring weaponry from around the world, and the Prehistory of Florida Gallery. The West Wing was originally built on a dip in the property and flooded in May 2009 due to heavy rains. The Museum was able to obtain FEMA funding that was matched in part by a Volusia County ECHO Grant and funding from the Museum to make reconstruction possible.

Municipal Stadium

Municipal Stadium, a 9,601-seat multi-purpose stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida, is home to the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcat football team. It is also used to host home games for the Mainland High School and Seabreeze High School football teams. The stadium is also known as Larry Kelly Field, a name honoring former Daytona Beach Mayor Lawrence J. Kelly. The facility was built in 1988. Until the end of the 2009 Bike Week season, the stadium hosted the AMA Flat Track motorcycle championships during Daytona Beach Bike Week. When the city took the track down as part of changes to the stadium, those races moved to a new dirt track at Daytona International Speedway. In 2008 and 2009 the stadium was the location of the Florida Football Alliance annual "Alliance Bowl" season championship game. It was held in Jacksonville for the 2010 season while Municipal Stadium underwent surface replacement. The Alliance Bowl is scheduled to return in 2011. From 2014 to 2016, the stadium hosts the NAIA National Championship game. In 2014, Southern Oregon claimed the title with a 55-31 win over Marian. Marian got revenge over Southern Oregon with a 31-14 win in 2015.

Daytona International Speedway

Daytona International Speedway is a race track in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States. Since opening in 1959, it has been the home of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious race in NASCAR. In addition to NASCAR, the track also hosts races of ARCA, AMA Superbike, USCC, SCCA, and Motocross. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.5 miles high speed tri-oval, a 3.56 miles sports car course, a 2.95 miles motorcycle course, and a .25 miles karting and motorcycle flat-track. The track's 180-acre infield includes the 29-acre Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The speedway is owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation. The track was built in 1959 by NASCAR founder William "Bill" France, Sr. to host racing that was held at the former Daytona Beach Road Course. His banked design permitted higher speeds and gave fans a better view of the cars. Lights were installed around the track in 1998, and today it is the third-largest single lit outdoor sports facility. The speedway has been renovated three times, with the infield renovated in 2004 and the track repaved in 1978 and 2010. On January 22, 2013, the track unveiled artist depictions of a renovated speedway. On July 5, 2013, ground was broken on the project that will remove backstretch seating and completely redevelop the frontstretch seating. The renovation to the speedway is being completed by Design-Builder Barton Malow Company in partnership with Rossetti Architects. The project, named "Daytona Rising", is scheduled to be completed in January 2016, and is expected to cost US $400 million, placing emphasis on improving fan experience with five expanded and redesigned fan entrances , as well as wider and more comfortable seating with more restrooms and concession stands. After the renovations, the track's grandstands will include 101,000 permanent seats with the ability to increase permanent seating to 125,000. Currently, the project is taking down the Sprint Tower on the frontstretch of the track while the backstretch seats are being taken down in order to get 60% complete before the Coke Zero 400 and finished before Speedweeks 2016. The name has been changed to Daytona International Speedway Stadium according to NASCAR.

Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University

Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University (also known as Embry-Riddle or ERAU) is a non-profit independent institution offering associate, bachelor, master's, and PhD degree programs in Arts & Sciences, Aviation, Business, Engineering, and Security & Intelligence. Called "the Harvard of the sky," it is the world's largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, and has campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida and Prescott, Arizona, and through the Worldwide Campus with more than 125 locations in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The university is a major research center in partnership with the aerospace industry, other universities and government agencies. Dr. John R. Watret has been the interim president as of June 1, 2015.

Biketoberfest

Biketoberfest is an annual motorcycle rally held in the fall in Daytona Beach, Florida since 1991 or 1992. In 1992 it was known as "Daytona Fall Tour"; in 1993, it started to be called Biketoberfest, and is now known as the "little brother" of the spring Daytona Beach Bike Week event. Attendance for Biketoberfest 2013 was estimated to be c. 100,000 visitors. The event's organizing authority is Halifax Area Advertising Authority, whose director has noted attendance has dropped off since 2004, and the 100,000 attendance figure is an approximation as entry is free without a ticket, and that the true attendance is "nearly impossible to count". Local merchants have asked to have the event extended from four days to 10 days in duration. The advertising authority withdrew plans for a $300,000 advertising campaign in Ohio after studies showed negative perceptions of the Daytona Beach area. Reporters have noted that compared to the spring Daytona rally, Biketoberfest features a higher proportion of choppers in attendance, warmer local waters and weather in transit from the Northeast United States, more new-model introductions from manufacturers, and less crowded streets and more abundant lodging. The Buffalo Chip Campground (better known for its Sturgis Motorcycle Rally presence) opened a site at Daytona just before Biketoberfest 2004, raising concerns about public nudity. Earlier concerns had prompted the creation of a city ordinance with unusually detailed definitions of body coverage, gaining international attention. The ordinance was deemed unconstitutional on First Amendment grounds by a Federal judge in 2006. Like the spring bike event in Daytona Beach, Biketoberfest features coleslaw wrestling. While the racing at Daytona International Speedway is more club-oriented, the CCS-sanctioned Fall Cycle Scene races at the Speedway are technically part of Biketoberfest, similar to Bike Week's Supercross-oriented draws.

S. H. Kress and Co. Building

The S. H. Kress and Co. Building at 140 South Beach Street in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States is a historic building. It was part of the S. H. Kress & Co. "five and dime" department store chain. On July 7, 1983, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. AME of Volusia, an investment firm owned by Albert M. Esposito, purchased the four-story building in 2007 from Mac Smith, an Ormond Beach Realtor who had owned it for 14 years. It was subdivided into 17,000 square feet of office space in the early 1980s. Among the larger tenants are the Zgraph web design firm, Image Makers advertising agency, Belliker Art Gallery, Daytona Beach Symphony Society and the Alzheimers Association of Volusia-Flagler, according to a Daytona Beach News-Journal article on March 12, 2007.

Daytona State College

Daytona State College is a public state college located in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States, and is a member institution of the Florida College System. DSC competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Mid-Florida Conference in seven sports, including softball, baseball, men's and women's swimming, women's golf, men's basketball, and women's basketball. As of 2011, DSC held eight NJCAA Team National Championship titles. DSC is home to the Southeast Museum of Photography, and has partnered with the Volusia and Flagler County school districts to form the Advanced Technology College, which allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credits via dual enrollment. DSC offers the Associate of Arts and various Associate of Science degrees, and as of 2014 offered six bachelor's degrees: the Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Science in Business Management, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. As of 2014, it served nearly 30,000 students annually. Daytona State College is accredited to award associate and bachelor's degrees by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
