Top Attractions in Basingstoke

Festival Place

Festival Place is a shopping centre in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England which opened on Tuesday, 22 October 2002. It houses over 200 shops including large stores such as Zara, BHS, Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Apple Store and HMV. There are also restaurants, bars, and cafés, mostly located outside in the covered Festival Square. The centre also incorporates a Vue cinema, Basingstoke Sports Centre and Basingstoke Discovery Centre. It is located within Basingstoke town centre, close to Basingstoke railway station, and incorporates the town bus station and a multi-storey car park. Festival Place is also home to The Breeze, located in the centre management block, The Breeze FM is Basingstoke North Hampshires local radio station. Festival Place is 102,000 m² in size and is owned by TIAA Henderson Real Estate. Festival Place was originally owned by the Grosvenor Group which sold Festival Place for £280 million near the shopping centres 10th birthday.

Church of Saint Mildred

Church of Saint Mildred is a Saxon stone church in Canterbury. It is a Grade I listed building since 1949. It is located in the St. Mildred's quarter in the city historic center. This is the only survived pre-Norman church within the former city walls. It is unknown when the church was originally build, but two of the walls of the nave are Saxon, i.e. are preserved from before 1066. It is believed that the chancel is Saxon as well. The relics of Saint Mildred, who died in 768, were transferred from the Canterbury Cathedral to the St Augustine's Abbey in the middle of the 11th century, and it is likely that the church was built at the time. St. Mildred Church has a five-bay nave and a two-bay chancel. Most of the nave and the chapels date from between the 13th century and 1512. It was extensively restored in 1861. The church belonged to the St Augustine's Abbey until the latter one was abolished during the secularisation in 1538, and since then it belongs to the Crown.

Fanum House

Fanum House is the headquarters of The Automobile Association in Basingstoke in the English county of Hampshire. It is one of several AA buildings named "Fanum House" around the country. The original Headquarters in Leicester Square was also called Fanum House, Fanum being the callsign of the AA. The AA took advantage of 1960s government incentives to move from their London HQ to the rapidly expanding town of Basingstoke. The building was completed in 1970 and AA employees moved in at that point, and it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1973. It is an 83 Meter, eighteen storey, building . It is clearly visible from the M3 motorway from some distance away. The name Fanum is a Latin word for temple and was chosen to reflect the AAs status as the UKs premier motor breakdown company. The Skyline Plaza development in the town centre replaces it as the tallest building in Basingstoke since it was extended from 61 meter to 85 meters with the addition of 3 floors in 2009. The 17th floor was originally executive offices with its own bar, but is now the same layout as the other floors in the tower block. There was also a bar in the 2nd floor canteen when the building first opened, though this closed some years ago. There is no floor 1, the ground floor is known as Upper Ground and the Lower Ground basement floor is about half the size of the floors in the tower block. The first floor up in the lift or stairs is called Floor 2. The Upper Ground floor is much larger than the floors in the tower block, with a huge open-plan flat-roof office area, a coffee bar, shop, learning centre and a theatre which is used for company presentations. The building also has a large undercover car park, notorious with employees for its very narrow parking spaces. There is an undercover connecting walkway from the car park to the Upper Ground floor. Floor 10 is not offices, rather a power supply and building control floor. AA employees generally do not have access to this floor. It is clearly visible from outside after dark as there is one floor which is clearly in darkness. The AAs HQ moved to the purpose-built Norfolk House on the edge of the Basingstoke ring road at the A340 junction in the mid-1990s, with the intention of closing Fanum House altogether. However the new offices were not large enough for all the Basingstoke-based employees, and both buildings operated for a period. It was ultimately Norfolk House that closed in 2002, following the takeover of the AA by Centrica in 1999, when the HQ functions moved to Farnborough. In 2005, the headquarters returned to Fanum House.

Hannington transmitting station

Hannington transmitting station is a television and radio transmitting station located on Cottington Hill near the village of Hannington. The transmitter is actually in the parish of Kingsclere. The station provides broadcast services to Berkshire and north Hampshire, and includes a 131.4 metres guyed steel lattice mast. Surmounting the mast is a GRP aerial cylinder, which contains the UHF television transmitting antennas, which brings the overall height of the mast to 151.9 metres . Hannington's digital broadcasts were severely attenuated to the East before DSO so as not to cause co-channel interference with Guildford transmitter. Those restrictions were removed soon after DSO in 2012. see picture. On Saturday 26 November 1977 at around 5.10 pm, the Southern ITV broadcast from this transmitter had its UHF sound transmission hi-jacked by unknown agents. At that time Hannington re-broadcast off-air UHF transmissions from Rowridge on the Isle-of-Wight. The UHF audio signal from Rowridge was swamped by a signal presumably from a location much closer to the Hannington transmitter, overriding the sound of the local ITV station Southern Television and broadcast their own audio message purporting to be from Vrillon, an alien from an institution calling itself the Ashtar Galactic Command. The message, transmitted over an ITN News bulletin and a subsequent Merrie Melodies cartoon, lasted six minutes. Despite extensive investigations by Hampshire Police, the Independent Broadcasting Authority and Southern Television, those responsible have never been identified, and the potential culprits have ranged from students to university professors to disgruntled television technicians.
