Top Attractions in Bingley

Cottingley

Cottingley is an urban area in the south-west of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Most of Cottingley is a 1960s council estate. The area falls within the Beeston and Holbeck ward ward of the Leeds City Council. The two tower blocks situated on a hill at the centre of the estate are Leeds's tallest flats. In the 1980s, these were in a poor condition, and had particular problems with squatters. At the end of the decade, they were refurbished and their condition was improved. Cottingley railway station serves the area. It is situated on the Leeds to Huddersfield line and was opened in 1988. The Cottingley estate was built in the 1970s, replacing an estate of temporary prefabricated housing that had previously been on the site. The estate was built on 'New Town Principles' (similar to Bransholme in Kingston upon Hull), the estate is set around a series of cul de sacs, segregating large volumes of traffic from housing and pedestrians. This method of building has often been criticised as creating a 'rabbit warren', impractical for the local police. Although on larger estates of similar style this causes a problem, the effects on Cottingley have been minimal. One criticism of Cottingley is its lack of local amenities, there is Junction 1 Retail Park which includes a B&Q warehouse, an Aldi supermarket, Maplins and a Burger King. It also featured a PC World, but this has now shut down. However the nearby town of Morley and the White Rose Centre provide supermarkets, pubs and other entertainments. The local school is Cottingley Primary Academy.

Church of All Saints

All Saints Church is the Anglican parish church in the town of Bingley, West Yorkshire, England. The history of the church probably dates back to pre-Norman times. It is thought that there might have been a wooden church on this location for many years prior to the Norman conquest, although no records exist. The first records of the church indicate it was rebuilt some time after 1066 by the Lord of the Manor, William Paganel, who gave it, with other possessions of his, to Drax Priory in the time of Archbishop Thurstan . This building was probably rebuilt many times over the centuries, culminating in the present structure, which was begun during the reign of Henry VIII . The choir was erected in 1518, when the church was dedicated to All Saints, having previously been dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The current tower was heightened and a new belfry added in 1739. The church received a new clock in 1856 and was renovated in 1870 1871 when the Ferrand Chapel became the vestry and some of the pews that were tied to the local Manor Houses were stripped out. The church has a stained-glass window crafted by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. There is a peal of bells, for many years six in number, with a further two added in 1873. The church was Grade II* listed in 1966. The parish includes the churches of St. Aidan, Crossflatts and St. Lawrence, Eldwick and is part of the Bingley Group Ministry which includes Holy Trinity Church and St Wilfreds in Gilstead. The benefice used to lie within the Diocese of Bradford, but since 20 April 2014 it is now in the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.

Samuel Lister Academy

Samuel Lister Academy (formerly Aire Valley School) is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Bingley, West Yorkshire, England. The school is named after Samuel Lister, 1st Baron Masham, an inventor and industrialist, notable for inventing the Lister nip comb. Previously a foundation school administered by Bradford City Council and the Nab Wood Community Trust, Aire Valley School converted to academy status in April 2012 and was renamed Samuel Lister Academy. The school is now sponsored by Bradford College Education Trust, but continues to coordinate with Bradford City Council for admissions. Samuel Lister Academy offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs. The school also has specialisms in science and the humanities.

Ireland Bridge

Bingleys Ireland Bridge is a Grade II* listed structure and a historically significant crossing point over the River Aire in West Yorkshire, England. It is now the main route between Bingley the nearby villages of Harden, Wilsden Cullingworth. The current bridge dates from 1686. The All Saints Parish Church and the Old White Horse Inn, a Coaching inn were constructed very close to the eastern bank and Bingleys modern town centre spread south from these beginnings. Despite previous strengthening works, the bridge was deemed unfit for two-way traffic, and traffic lights were installed for a time at either end. These allowed only a single lane across for some time disrupting local traffic at peak times. In January 2010, Bradford Council closed the bridge completely, and commenced works to strengthen the bridge. These works resulted in the closure of Harden Road to vehicles over the bridge. The works were originally due to take place in June 2009, but were postponed owing to the presence of rare bats roosting in the spans of the bridge. Ireland Bridge reopened to two-way traffic in June 2010.
