Top Attractions in Ormont-Dessus

Peak Walk

Peak Walk is a pedestrian suspension bridge linking two mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps. It is situated in the Diablerets massif of the Bernese Alps in the canton of Vaud, and connects the peak of Scex Rouge with another peak. On the other peak is the viewpoint of the Glacier 3000 company. Scex Rouge is about 5 m higher than Glacier 3000s viewpoint. Peak Walk is the worlds first suspension bridge which connects two mountain peaks. The bridge, which has been built by the firm Seiler AG in Bönigen, is 107 m long, 0.8 m wide and 1.2 m high with a 15% slope. It has four pieces of key supporting steel cables with a 120 tonne loading capacity. Peak Walk is anchored by 20 pieces in the rock. It was built as a tourist attraction in Europe, and it costs 1.8 million franc . It is expected that the current number of summertime visitors of around 50,000 will double as a result of the new bridge. Three hundred people could be accommodated at a time, although the number would be reduced to 150 to ensure greater comfort. The designers took the extreme conditions into account, with winds of about 200 km/h . Mountains that can be seen from the bridge include Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Mönch, Jungfrau and Eiger, and the bridge has a partial glass floor that afford views down through it. In addition, the bridge became the worlds second highest suspension bridge after the Titlis Cliff Walk, which is 3,000 m above sea level. The thin air at high altitudes and poor weather hampered construction work, and summer storms delayed the transportation of construction materials.

Scex Rouge

The Scex Rouge is a mountain of the Alps, overlooking Les Diablerets in the canton of Vaud. Along with the Oldenhorn to the east, it is one of the main peaks of the Diablerets, a huge ice-covered mountain near the western end of the Bernese Alps, straddling the border between the cantons of Vaud, Valais and Bern, and exceeding 3,000 metres above sea level. On its west side, the Scex Rouge is part of a nearly 2,000 metre-high amphitheatre of cliffs surrounding the Creux de Champ valley, south of Les Diablerets. On its southeast side, the Scex Rouge overlooks the Tsanfleuron Glacier, the largest in the massif. Administratively, the mountain is part of the municipality of Ormont-Dessus, which also includes Les Diablerets. The Scex Rouge is connected from the Col du Pillon by two aerial tramways operated by Glacier 3000. The first leads to the summit of the Tête aux Chamois , which can also be reached from Reusch and Oldenegg on the Bernese side. From the Tête aux Chamois, a second aerial tramway leads to near the summit of the Scex Rouge, or more precisely, a 2,965 metre-high subsidiary summit. The mountain station lies at an elevation of 2,940 metres and consists of a large building, designed by Mario Botta, including a panoramic restaurant. The true summit of the Scex Rouge can now be reached by a bridge connecting it with the subsidiary peak, which is in turn connected to the station by stairs. The 107 metre-long so-called "suspension bridge" , called Peak Walk, was inaugurated in October 2014. The area is used for winter sports from October to May, with several ski lifts being located on the Tsanfleuron Glacier. In the summer season, several hiking trails cross the glacier between the Scex Rouge, the Quille du Diable and the Oldensattel, at the foot of the Oldenhorn. The Glacier 3000 company also operates a snow coach on the glacier. The Scex Rouge itself can be reached by experienced hikers from Reusch via the Oldensattel or from Derborence and the Sanetsch Pass via the Quille du Diable. Two other more difficult access are from Les Diablerets via the Col de Prapio and from the Col du Pillon via the Scex Rouge Glacier. The first connection to the Scex Rouge was inaugurated on July 1964, at the time of Expo64, the fifth Swiss national exhibition. It remains nowadays the highest mountain of the canton with public transport access.

Diablerets

The Diablerets are a huge ice-covered mountain of the Alps, culminating at 3,210 metres above sea level and straddling the border between the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Valais. The Diablerets massif, which consists of several peaks, extends for about 10 kilometres near the western extremity of the Bernese Alps, between the two deep passes of Cheville and Sanetsch. The mountain is covered by two distinct glaciers, the largest being the Tsanfleuron Glacier and the highest being the Diablerets Glacier. The main summit is the highest point in the canton of Vaud. In the latter canton, the mountain has given its name to the nearby village and resort of Les Diablerets, which lies on the north side of the massif. On the south side the mountain overlooks the hamlet and valley of Derborence. Administratively, the summit of the Diablerets is shared between the municipalities of Conthey, Ormont-Dessus and Bex .

Les Diablerets

Les Diablerets is a village and ski resort located in the municipality of Ormont-Dessus in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. The village lies at an altitude of 1,160 metres on the north side of the massif of the Diablerets in the Swiss Alps. It can be accessed by train or by road from Aigle. The Col du Pillon on the east give access to the Bernese Oberland region and is the Glacier 3000 cable car lowest station. The resort has a ski school, hotels and a small town centre. Tourists staying in Les Diablerets have the option to ski in the Scex Rouge area, the northeastern valley of Isenau or the southwestern valley of Meilleret. From Meilleret they can ski down the 13-kilometre run to the village. Les Diablerets hosts the Festival International du Film Alpin Les Diablerets every year since 1969.
