Gamalama

Gamalama is a near-conical stratovolcano that comprises the entire Ternate island in Indonesia. The island lies off the western shore of Halmahera island in the north of the Maluku Islands. For centuries, Ternate was a center of Portuguese and Dutch forts for spice trade, which have accounted for thorough reports of Gamalamas volcanic activities. An eruption in 1775 caused the deaths of approx 1300 people. On December 4, 2011 Mount Gamalama erupted, ejecting material up to 2,000 meters into the air. Thousands of residents in nearby Ternate City fled due to ash and dust particles raining down on the town. Finally on December 27 some 4 people died and dozens injured from debris falls after a month of activity. More eruptions occurred in September 2012. An eruption on December 18, 2014, deposited five centimeters of ash on the runway of Babullah Airport in Ternate, closing the airport.

Mount Gamkonora

Mount Gamkonora is a stratovolcano on Halmahera island, Indonesia. With an elevation of 1,560 metres, it is the highest peak on the island. It has produced an elongated series of craters along the north-south rift. The largest eruption in 1673 was accompanied by a tsunami which inundated the nearby villages. Between 1564 and 1989 the volcano erupted twelve times. The volcano erupted again on July 10, 2007, with over 8,000 people reported to have fled their homes in the vicinity.

Dukono

Dukono is a volcano located at the northernmost corner of Halmahera island. It has a broad profile and is capped by compound craters. Dukono is an active volcano. During the major eruption in 1550, a lava flow filled in the strait between Halmahera and the north flank cone of Mount Mamuya. It was an eruption of scale 3 on VEI. Deaths were reported but the figure is unknown. Smaller eruptions occurred in 1719, 1868, and 1901. Since 1933, Dukono has been erupting continuously until the present. Eruptions in 2014 increased since early spring. Ash clouds rose up to 2,5 km height and volcanic lightning were observed and photographed on June 11. Strombolian eruptions spew lava bombs on the outer flank of the crater cone.

Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park

Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park is a national park on Halmahera, the biggest island in the North Maluku province of Indonesia. The park is considered by BirdLife International to be vital for the survival of at least 23 endemic bird species. Aketajawe-Lolobata, which has an area of 167,300 hectares, was declared a national park in 2004.

Fort Kastela

Fort Kastela, Benteng Kastela in Indonesian language, is a ruined fortress located at the southwest coast of Ternate. It is famous for being the first colonial fortification constructed in the Spice Islands of Maluku/Maluku Utara, Indonesia. Built by the Portuguese in 1522, it is also referred to in different languages as São João Batista , Ciudad del Rosario or Gammalamma . Today it is locally known as Kastella/Kastela. In April 1521, a fleet was dispatched by King Manuel I of Portugal from Lisbon under the command of Jeorge de Brito. The fleet was given orders to intercept the Spanish fleet of Ferdinand Magellan while sailing towards the Spice Islands from the Americas. Upon making landfall, they were ordered to construct a fortress on Ternate and to establish the Portuguese pre-eminence in the region. The initial fort was named by the Portuguese after Saint John the Baptist, on whose feast day the first stone was laid in 1522. It was completed in 1523. The location selected was on the south-west coast of Ternate, near the Sultan's Court, but 7 km from the island's main reef-free harbor at Talangame. Kastella commanded three narrow passages through the encircling reefs, which allowed small crafts to arrive for loading cloves, but prevented larger vessels from closing sufficiently to bombard. Several subsequent visitors described the fort as ineffective and poorly constructed, and it was not until the governorship of António Galvão, commencing in 1536, that the defenses were improved significantly. After killing Ternate's Sultan Hairun in 1570, the Portuguese were besieged in their fort by forces of the new Sultan Baab for five years. In 1575, they handed over the fort and retreated to Ambon. Sultan Baab occupied the fort, renamed it as Gammalamma and converted it into his royal palace. Anticipating a Portuguese return, Sultan Baab extensively modified the defenses into a substantial fortress, and constructed an additional fort 5 km to the east, known today as Fort Kota Janji. In 1605, the newly arrived Dutch VOC captured Portuguese forts on Ambon and Tidore and established a trading base on Ternate. The Spanish (united with Portugal since 1580) dispatched a strong expedition from the Philippines and recaptured Kastella, taking hostage the new Sultan and exiling him to Manila in March 1606. They further modified the Gammalamma defenses into a powerful fortress and renamed it as Ciudad del Rosario. Dutch Admiral Paulus van Caerden, captured by the Spanish in 1610 and held in Kastella, regarded it as "invulnerable." When the Spanish departed from the Spice Islands in 1663, they partially destroyed the defenses which were then occupied by the Dutch. Today the site consists of ruins spread over a large area, scattered with local houses and bisected by the main island road. There is a monument for the 1575 Ternatean victory over the Portuguese, and sections of the old Portuguese walls and bastions from the Spanish period can also be seen.

Fort Kalamata

Fort Kalamata was built by the Portuguese on the island of Ternate in Indonesias Maluku Islands. Formerly known as Benteng Kayu Merah, it was first built in 1540 in support of Portuguese efforts to monopolise the lucrative clove trade and to entrench their dominance over other European powers. It was rebuilt by the Dutch in 1610 who became the dominant power in Maluku. It is located at the south eastern corner of the island 1 km south of Bastiong on the edge of the water. It is now open to the public.

Amasing Hill

Amasing Hill consists of three small andesitic volcanoes. The volcanic complex is located on Bacan island at the west of Halmahera island, Indonesia. The two volcanoes, Cakasuanggi and Dua Saudara, were constructed in the southeast. The other volcano, Sibela Mountains, is a metamorphic complex of volcano.

Mount Hiri

Hiri is a small 3 km wide forested island immediately north of the island of Ternate, in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It is located at the northernmost part of a chain of volcanic islands off the western coast of Halmahera. It is a conical volcano which rises to 630 m . Its dominant neighbour to the south is the more active volcano of Mount Gamalama, on Ternate island. This island was used by Z Special Unit, the mainly Australian special operations group active in this area during WWII, on April 9–10, 1945, to take the then Sultan of Ternate, Iskander Muhammad Jabir Syah, to safety from the occupying Japanese forces. The Sultan and his family were rowed at night from Ternate across to Hiri Island, where Z Force protected them from the Japanese troops the next day. He and his family were shortly after taken by U.S. Navy PT Boat to Morotai Island.

Tidore

In the pre-colonial era, the kingdom of Tidore was a major regional political and economic power, and a fierce rival of nearby Ternate, just to the north.

Bacan

The Bacan Islands, formerly also known as the Bachans, Bachians, and Batchians, are an group of islands in the Moluccas in Indonesia. They are mountainous and forested, lying south of Ternate and southwest of Halmahera. The islands are administered by the South Halmahera Regency of North Maluku Province. Bacan , formerly also known as Bachian or Batchian, is the group's largest island. The second and third largest islands are Kasiruta and Mandioli. Bacan includes about 60,000 people of which about 8,000 live in the capital Labuha; it is subdivided into 7 districts. Kasiruta and Mandioli each have over 8,000 inhabitants, and each is subdivided into 2 districts. There are dozens of smaller islands in the group.

Galela

Galela , is a small town on the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera. It is located in the North Halmahera Regency, part of the province of North Maluku. Views of Mount Tarakani can be seen from the scenic coast. Galelarese constitutes an official ethnic group in North Halmhera and is also a language, spoken in the Galela region, neighboring parts of Tobelo and Loloda districts, on the island of Morotai and in villages scattered in southern Halmahera as well as on Bacan and Obi. It is served by Galela Airport . During 2015 Susi Air flies from Ternate every Thursday morning.

Fort Oranye

Fort Oranye is located at the centre of Ternate City on the island of Ternate, North Maluku province, in Indonesias Maluku Islands. It is named after the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange. Built by the Dutch in 1607 when they set about establishing a monopoly the sultans cloves, it is located on top of an undated Malay version. It was the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Company until it moved to Batavia around 1619. The fort was later used as the residence of the Dutch governors in Ternate. Today, the fort is unrestored, although the walls are in good shape despite numerous earthquakes over the years. Parts are used by the military and police. Public access is allowed.

Fort Tolukko

Fort Tolukko is a small fortification located by the sea on the east coast of Ternate facing Halmahera. It was one of the colonial forts built to control the trade in clove spices, which prior to the eighteenth century were only found in the Maluku Islands. Sources variously ascribe its original builders as Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish. The most convincing claim is from the Spanish, original documents indicating that the Governor of the Spanish Philippines, Captain-General Juan de Silva dispatched an expeditionary force in 1611 under Captain Fernando de Ayala to construct the fort. With the Dutch fortress of Fort Oranye lying between Fort Tolukko and the main Spanish fortress of Kastella, the Spanish who named the fort San Juan de Toloco found it difficult to maintain Fort Tolukko, and it was abandoned by 1613. The Dutch subsequently took control of the fort, named it Fort Hollandia, but later handed it to Ternates Sultan for use as a fortified royal residence. Fort Tolukkos unusual phallic layout is more likely a function of the immediate topography than anything else. Its primary function was to dominate a rare coral reef-free landing point directly in front of the fort. Fort Tolukko, located in the village of Dufa Dufa on the edge of Ternate City was renovated in the early 1990s and is open to the public.

Fort Oranje

Fort Oranje is a 17th-century Dutch fort located at the center of Ternate City on the island of Ternate, one of the Moluccas in Indonesia. The fort is the largest in Ternate Island. Fort Oranje was once the capital of Dutch East India Company's trade empire in Asia until it was moved to Batavia.

Museum Kedaton Sultan Ternate

The Museum Kedaton Sultan Ternate (Palace of the Sultan of Ternate Museum) is a museum of relics from the era of the Sultanate of Ternate. The museum is located in the Village of Sao-sio, North Ternate, Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia.

Mount Tigalalu

Mount Tigalalu at the western side of Halmahera island, Indonesia, is a stratovolcano located at the western end of Kayoa Island. Part of the volcano is flanked by coral limestones.

Mount Tarakan

Tarakan volcano is located in Indonesias Halmahera islands, near the shore of Galela Bay north east of Dukono volcano. Tarakan consists of two large cinder cones, namely Tarakan Lamo and Tarakan Itji .

Kayoa

Kayoa , or in the native language Pulau Urimatiti, is an island, one of the Maluku Islands. It is located in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku administrative division of Indonesia.

Kuabang Airport

Kuabang Airport (IATA: KAZ, ICAO: WAMK), also known as Kao Airport, is an airport located in Jati Village, Kao District, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, Indonesia. The airport has a runway size of 1,950 × 45 m, which can accommodate Narrow-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737 Classic. The distance from the airport to Tobelo is about 75 km and takes about 2 hours using land vehicle. The airport currently only serves daily domestic flights to Manado operated by Wings Air using the ATR-72 aircraft. The airport was originally built by the Empire of Japan at the midst of the Pacific War of World War II. After the Japanese surrendered, the airport was neglected for several years before the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation decided to reactivate the airport to improve air connection to the surrounding area. In 1972, a CN-235 successfully landed smoothly on the airport runway, marking the completiom of the reactivation of the airport.
