Cathedral of Christ the King

Cathedral of Christ the King is located on Kandy Road, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. It is the primary Anglican cathedral of the Diocese of Kurunegala, affiliated to the Church of Ceylon. The construction of the church was largely funded by Most Rev. Lakdasa De Mel, the first Bishop of Kurunegala, along with other members of the De Mel family. The construction of the church commenced on 21 December 1950, upon a 1.4 hectares site, at the base of Ethagala . The chapel of the Blessed Virgin and St. Thomas the Apostle were consecrated in 1956, the ceremony was presided over by Rev. Aurobindo Nath Mukherjee, Metropolitan of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon. The nave, the font, the pulpit and the lectern were consecrated in 1960. The architecture, especially the nave and roof is a combination of Polonnaruwa and Kandy era architecture, reflecting the brick vaulted image houses and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic . The cathedral is constructed out of cement and reinforced concrete. The central tower is 33 metres high and crowned by a bronze cross. The brass lamps and the communion rails depict art motifs and lacquer work of Kandyan tradition. The The Cross of Anuradhapura is also replicated in brass. The flags of the ‘Disavas’, which constituted the Diocese of Kurunegala, have been reproduced by Ena de Silva and are displayed on an interior wall of the cathedral. The modern painting, by Nalini Marcia Jayasuriya, forms the backdrop to the Lady Chapel and the fresco of Christ the King was painted by George Keyt.

Munneswaram temple

Munneswaram temple is an important regional Hindu temple complex in Sri Lanka. It has been in existence at least since 1000 CE, although myths surrounding the temple associate it with the popular Indian epic Ramayana, and its legendary hero-king Rama. The temple is one of five ancient temples dedicated to Shiva in the region. The temple complex is a collection of five temples, including a Buddhist temple. The central temple dedicated to Shiva is the most prestigious and biggest, and is popular amongst Hindus. The other temples are dedicated to Ganesha, Ayyanayake and Kali. The Kali temple is also popular with Buddhists, who frequent the complex. Post-19th century, most of the devotees of all temples in the complex belong to the majority Sinhala Buddhist ethnic group; the temples, excluding the Ayyanayake and the Buddhist temple, are administered by families belonging to the minority Hindu Tamils. The temple is located in Munneswaram, a village with mixed Sinhala and Tamil population situated in the historic Demala Pattuva region in the Puttalam District. The main Shiva temple owns extensive property in the surrounding villages, ownership of which was affirmed when the region was part of the medieval Kotte Kingdom. The temple was destroyed twice by the Portuguese colonial officers, who handed over the properties to the Jesuits. Although the Jesuits built a Catholic chapel over the temple foundation, locals reconstructed the temple both times. Due to religious and demographic change after the late 18th century, most surrounding villages and towns are not directly associated with the temple administration and maintenance. However, the villages of Maradankulama and Udappu are associated with organizing the main temple festival. The main festivals celebrated at the temple include Navarathri and Sivarathri. The former is a nine-day long festival in honour of the presiding Goddess, while the latter is an overnight observation in honour of Lord Shiva. In addition to these two Hindu festivals, the temple has a festival of its own, the Munneswaram festival, a four-week-long event attended by Hindus and Buddhists.

Kurunegala

Kurunegala is a major city in Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of the North Western Province, Sri Lanka, and the Kurunegala District. Kurunegala was also an ancient royal capital for 50 years, from the end of the 13th century to the start of the 14th century. Kurunegala is located at the junction of several main roads linking to other important parts of the country. It is situated about 94 km from Colombo, and 42 km from Kandy. Located at an altitude of 116 meters above sea level, Kurunegala is surrounded by coconut plantations and rubber estates. There are eight very noticeable large rocks that encircle and dominate the city. Kurunegala's rocks rise from the plain below and have characteristic names, six of which come from the animals that they are imagined to represent. The largest among them is Ethagala or the "Elephant Rock" (though the translation is actually Tusker), reaches 325 meters. The shape of Ethagala resembles an Elephant.

Seguwantivu and Vidatamunai Wind Farms

The Seguwantivu and Vidatamunai Wind Farms are two legally separate wind farms built together by Seguwantivu Wind Power and Vidatamunai Wind Power, on the south-east shore of the Puttalam Lagoon, in Puttalam, Sri Lanka. The Seguwantivu Wind Farm utilizes thirteen 800-kilowatt Gamesa AE-59 wind turbines, while the Vidatamunai Wind Farm utilizes twelve wind turbines also of the same model, thus totalling the installed capacity to 9.6MW and 10.4MW respectively. The wind farm is approximately 3.2 km in length, and is diagonal from north-west to south-east, with the mainland on the north-east the Puttalam Lagoon on the south-west. The twelve northern turbines belong to Vidatamunai Wind Farm, while the thirteen southern turbines belong to Seguwantivu. The wind farms cost US$40 million to construct. The transportation of wind turbines from the Colombo Harbour to the wind farm site was carried out by Agility Logistics in late-2009. Power lines and telephone poles had to be permanently raised to 19 ft in order to accommodate the transportation of large turbine parts from the Harbour to the construction site. The erection of each turbine required three cranes; a 230 metric ton lattice crane with a 110 m boom, a 60 metric ton crane, and a 10 metric ton crane, all of which were imported. The wind farms together produces 52.56 GWh of electricity annually. A central control station, two indoor switch yards of 10MW each, 1kV/33kV transformers, and an administration building has been built in the Mullipuram Village to support the operations of the wind farm.

Norocholai Coal Power Station

The Lakvijaya Power Station (also known as the Norocholai Power Station, after its location) is the largest power station in Sri Lanka. The power station is in Norocholai, Puttalam, on the southern end of the Kalpitiya Peninsula. Construction of the facility began on 11 May 2006, with the first unit commissioning on 22 March 2011. The first 300-megawatt phase was completed and ceremonially commissioned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 22 March 2011 at 18:27 local time, with the presence of Minister of Energy Champika Ranawaka, deputy Minister of Energy Premalal Jayasekara. The former minister of Energy John Seneviratne could not attend as he was injured in a traffic accident on the way to the ceremony. According to the Ceylon Electricity Board, the US$455 million first phase generates nearly 1.7 TWh of electricity annually — a significant amount when compared to Sri Lanka's total production of 11.5 TWh in 2011. The plant is connected to the grid via 115 km (71 mi) 220-kilovolt transmission line to Veyangoda. Power station exhausts are emitted through a 150 m (492 ft) tall chimney, one of the country's tallest man-made structures. During its pre-development stages, protests were launched by residents living at the project site, claiming that they were deceived by the government.

Deduru Oya Dam

The Deduru Oya Dam is an embankment dam built across the Deduru River in Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka. Built in 2014, the primary purpose of the dam is to retain approximately a billion cubic metres of water for irrigation purposes, which would otherwise flow out to sea. Construction of the dam began in 2006 and was ceremonially completed in 2014, with the presence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Site studies and design of the dam was done by engineers from the Ministry of Irrigation. The dam, which measures approximately 2,400 m wide, creates the Deduru Oya Reservoir, which has a capacity of 75,000,000 m3 . Water from the reservoir is used to irrigate approximately 11,000 hectares of farmland, while also powering a 1.5 megawatt hydroelectric power station, operated by the Ministry of Power and Energy. In addition to the eight sluice gates, water from the reservoir is channelled from the reservoir via three canals, namely the Left Canal, Central Canal, and the South Canal. The South Canal is a trans-basin concrete canal measuring 33 km , channelling water from the Deduru Oya Reservoir to the Inginimitiya Reservoir at a flow rate of 300 cu ft/s .
