Tsawwassen

Tsawwassen is a suburban, mostly residential community located on a peninsula in the southwestern corner of the Municipality of Delta, British Columbia, Canada. Tsawwassen provides the only road access to the community of Point Roberts, Washington via 56th Street. It is also the location of BC Ferries' Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, built in 1959 to provide foot-passenger and motor vehicle access from the Lower Mainland to the southern part of Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands. Because Tsawwassen touches a shallow bank, the ferry terminal is built at the southwestern end of a 3 km-long causeway that juts out into the Strait of Georgia. The ferry dock and causeway are part of Highway 17. Boundary Bay Airport, a major training hub for local and international pilots which also provides local airplane and helicopter service, is located ten minutes away. The Roberts Bank Superport is also located near Tsawwassen. To the northwest of the community of Tsawwassen are the lands of Tsawwassen First Nation ; a people of Coast Salish ancestry. This land is bounded by the Strait of Georgia on the west, the 2600 block to the north, the 4800 block to the east, and the 1200 block to the south. While also part of TFN lands, the 92-lot residential subdivision of Stahaken was leased for use by the Tsawwassen Indian Reserve to Staheken Developments Ltd., in 1989 for a 99-year term. It was then developed in a partnership between Stahaken Development Ltd. and the Municipality of Delta. As such it is commonly thought of and serviced in the same manner as other subdivisions in the community of Tsawwassen. Stahaken residents are represented by the Stahaken Homeowners Association. Tsawwassen had a population of 20,933 in the 2006 census.

Annacis Island

Annacis Island is an island located in the south arm of the Fraser River, in Delta, British Columbia. The island is now mostly industrial, and it contains one of Metro Vancouver's secondary wastewater treatment plants. The southern part of the island is connected to Delta via the Alex Fraser Bridge, which is part of Highway 91. Connections northward to Richmond and New Westminster are via smaller bridges on Highway 91. At the eastern end of the island there is also the Derwent Way Bridge which connects the island to the Queensborough neighborhood of New Westminster. The island is served by a public bus that connects to 22nd Street Station in New Westminster. The wider part of the Fraser River south of the island is known as Annieville Channel and City Reach , while the more narrow channel north of the island is Annacis Channel. The eastern tip of the island is known as Shoal Point, and the western tip as Purfleet Point.

Deas Island

Deas Island is an island in the south arm of the Fraser River between Delta, British Columbia and Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The island is home to a regional park approximately 300 acres in size. It is home to three historic buildings; Burrvilla, a stately Victorian home, Inverholme, a one-room schoolhouse, and the Delta Agricultural Hall. The island is also home to many types of birds and is a popular bird watching destination. The island is notable for being the site of the southern end of the George Massey Tunnel (originally the Deas Island Tunnel). The tunnel is part of Highway 99 and connects Delta to Richmond. The tunnel goes from Deas Island to Lulu Island to the north. There is a small bridge that completes the connection between Deas Island and the main part of Delta.

Ladner Leisure Centre

The Ladner Leisure Centre is a recreation centre located in Ladner, a neighbourhood in Delta, British Columbia. The facility contains an Ice rink and two swimming pools, a 6 lane 25 metre competition pool as well as a wading pool for casual use. It also houses a 2,800 square foot weight room, a fitness studio, multi-purpose rooms, a swirl pool, a sauna, as well as a Blenz coffee shop and a private physiotherapy clinic. The facility is the official training centre of the WHL's Vancouver Giants, the home rink of the PIJHL's Delta Ice Hawks and a home rink, along with Tilbury Arena and South Delta Recreation Centre, for the South Delta Minor Hockey Association. During the summer months the ice is removed and surface is used for lacrosse where it is the home of the BCJLL's Delta Islanders as well as the Delta Lacrosse Association.

George Massey Tunnel

The George Massey Tunnel (often referred to as the Massey Tunnel) is a highway traffic tunnel in the Metro Vancouver region of southwestern British Columbia. It is located approximately 20 km (12.4 mi) south of the city centre of Vancouver, British Columbia, and approximately 30 km (18.6 mi) north of the Canada–United States border at Blaine, Washington. Construction, costing approximately $25 million, began on the tunnel in March 1957, and it was opened to traffic on May 23, 1959 as the Deas Island Tunnel. Queen Elizabeth II attended the official opening ceremony of the tunnel on July 15, 1959. It carries a four-lane divided highway under the south arm of the Fraser River estuary, joining the City of Richmond to the north with the Corporation of Delta (a municipality) to the south. It is the only road tunnel below sea level in Canada, making its roadway the lowest road surface in Canada. The tunnel forms part of Highway 99. It is named for Nehamiah "George" Massey, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He represented Delta between 1956 and 1960, and was a long-time advocate of a permanent crossing to replace an existing ferry that crossed the south arm of the Fraser River. The tunnel was renamed the George Massey Tunnel in 1967, three years after Massey died. It is still sometimes referred to by its previous name, the Deas Island Tunnel. As of 2013, public consultations are taking place regarding replacement of the tunnel.

Burns Bog

Burns Bog is an ombrotrophic peat bog located in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest raised peat bog and the largest undeveloped urban land mass on the West Coast of the Americas. Burns Bog was originally 10,000–12,000 acres before development. Currently, only 3,500 hectares remain of the bog. Burns Bog is habitat to more than 300 plant and animal species, and 175 bird species. Some of these animals are listed as endangered or vulnerable under the BC Provincial Government Species at-risk designations. The bog is also a major migratory stopover for various bird species on the Pacific Flyway. Burns Bog regulates water as well. The bog prevents flooding, maintains cool water temperatures in nearby rivers, holds water, and releases water in dry conditions. Burns Bog is an estuarine bog since it is situated at the mouth of the Fraser River and next to the Pacific Ocean. It is the only estuarine raised peat bog formed in a marine west coast climate.

Roberts Bank Superport

Roberts Bank Superport is a twin-terminal port facility located on the mainland coastline of the Strait of Georgia in Delta, British Columbia. Opened in 1970 with Westshore Terminals as its only tenant, Roberts Bank was expanded in 1983–84, and in June 1997 opened a second terminal, the GCT Deltaport container facility. Part of Port Metro Vancouver, Roberts Bank is also known as the Outer Harbour of Canada's busiest port. Westshore is the busiest single coal export terminal in North America and is operated by the Westar Group on a long-term contract. It typically ships over 20 million tonnes of export coal a year and early in 2010 completed a $49-million equipment upgrade, bringing its capacity from 24 million to 29 million tonnes per year. Like the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to the southeast, Roberts Bank was built at the end of a long causeway over a shallow bank. Originally created as a 20-hectare pod of reclaimed land for a major coal port, it is now four times that size. In January 2010, Deltaport added a third berth and doubled its capacity. It is now one of the busiest import/export ports in North America and a major hub for container trucking companies. Roberts Bank is serviced by CN Rail, CP Rail, and BNSF Railway. Seaspan International provides tugboat services to both terminals at peninsula.

Boundary Bay Airport

Boundary Bay Airport or Vancouver/Boundary Bay Airport (IATA: YDT, ICAO: CZBB) is located beside Boundary Bay and 2.5 nautical miles (4.6 km; 2.9 mi) east of Ladner in Delta, British Columbia, Canada, 8.5 NM (15.7 km; 9.8 mi) south southeast of Vancouver and close to the U.S. border. The airport, which opened 11 July 1983, serves mostly general aviation and includes facilities for aircraft maintenance, flight training, parking, and air traffic control training. Boundary Bay is Canada's fifth busiest airport by total aircraft movements, and the country's busiest general aviation airport. It is the location of the former Canadian Forces Station Ladner. In December 2004, Boundary Bay Airport was acquired by Alpha Aviation. In April 2008, Alpha Aviation established a Fixed-Base Operation (FBO) and Alpha Executive Air began operating regularly scheduled flights twice daily between Boundary Bay Airport and Victoria International Airport on Vancouver Island, as well as charter service using turbine pressurized aircraft. Many smaller airlines use Boundary Bay Airport's maintenance facilities. As of 2010, Alpha Executive Air ceased operations but Boundary Bay Air Services - Vancouver FBO is open serving business, corporate, and general aviation customers. The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). CBSA officers are available on call to handle entry for general aviation aircraft carrying no more than 15 passengers.
