Comoé National Park

Comoé National Park is a national park in north eastern Côte dIvoire as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since its inscription in 1983. It is in the Ivoirian Zanzan Region between the towns of Kong to the west of both the park and the Comoé River, and Bouna to the east of the park, and just west of the Black Volta that forms the border, in that area, between Côte dIvoire and Burkina Faso. The park was initially added as a World Heritage Site due to the diversity of plant life present around the Comoé River, including pristine patches of tropical rain forest that are usually only found further south. As a well-eroded plain between two large rivers, the land in the area is home to soils and a moisture regime suitable to a richer biodiversity than surrounding areas. In 2003 it was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to poaching, over-grazing of the park by cattle, and absence of management. Comeo National Park is located in Northwest Africa. There are very many waterfalls and natural rivers. The floodplains around the River Comoé in Comoé National Park create seasonal grasslands that are the feeding grounds of a population of Hippopotamus amphibius. In addition, all three extant species of African crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus, Mecistpos cataphractus, and Osteolaemus tetraspis, call parts of the park home, and migratory birds use the seasonal wetlands. The Comoé National Park Research Station is also located within the park, in which field research is conducted in the field of ecology, behaviour and evolution.

Abidjan

Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast and is the most populated West African French-speaking city. Its population at the 2014 Census was 4,707,404, which is 20% of the overall population of the country. Only Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria, surpasses it within West Africa in the number of its inhabitants. Considered the cultural crossroads of West Africa, Abidjan is characterized by a high level of industrialization and urbanization. The city grew up quickly after the construction of a new wharf in 1931 and its designation as the capital city of the then-French colony in 1933. The completion of the Vridi Canal in 1951 enabled it to become an important sea port. In 1983 Yamoussoukro was designated as the official capital city of Ivory Coast, but almost all political institutions and foreign embassies are still in Abidjan.

Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve

Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a protected area and UNESCO World Heritage Site in both Guinea and Côte dIvoire. A further extension of the reserve to include areas in Liberia has also been proposed. The park includes significant portions of Mount Nimba, a geographically unique area with more than 200 endemic species. These species include multiple types of duikers, big cats, civets, chimpanzees, and several types of viviparous toads.

St. Paul's Cathedral

St Pauls Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Abidjan, Cote dIvoire. The cathedral, which was designed by architect Aldo Spirito, serves as the motherchurch for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan. The first stone of the cathedral was consecrated on May 11, 1980 by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral visit to Côte dIvoire. He further dedicated the building upon completion on August 10, 1985 during a second visit to the country to lay the foundation for the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace . The cost of implementing this modern architectural edifice, reputedly the second largest church on the African continent, and one of the largest cathedrals in the world, was estimated at $12 million. Architecturally, the cathedral is unique and modern, though built to meet the specific aspirations of the ethnic people of Cote dlvoire.

Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire . The basilica was constructed between 1985 and 1989 at a cost of US$300 million. The design of the dome and encircled plaza are clearly inspired by those of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican City, although it is not an outright replica. The cornerstone was laid on 10 August 1985, and it was consecrated on 10 September 1990 by Pope John Paul II. The basilica is not a cathedral. The nearby Cathedral of Saint Augustine is the principal place of worship and seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Yamoussoukro. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest "church" in the world, having surpassed the previous record holder, St. Peter's Basilica, upon completion. It has an area of 30,000 square metres and is 158 m high. However, it also includes a rectory and a villa (counted in the overall area), which are not strictly part of the church. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, compared to 60,000 for St. Peter's. Less than a third of Côte d'Ivoire's population are Christian, and most services conducted at the basilica are attended by only a few hundred people. The Basilica is administered by Polish Pallottines.

Taï National Park

Taï National Park is a national park in Côte dIvoire containing one of the last areas of primary rainforest in West Africa. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the breadth of its flora and fauna. Five mammal species of the Taï National Park are on the red list of threatened species: pygmy hippopotamus, olive colobus monkeys, leopards, chimpanzees and Jentinks duiker. Taï National Park is approximately 100 km from the Ivoirian coast on the border with Liberia between the Cavally and Sassandra Rivers. It covers an area of 3,300 km² with a 200 km² buffer zone up to 396 m. The Tai Forest reserve was created in 1926 and promoted to National Park status in 1972. It was recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and added to the list of Natural World Heritage Sites in 1982. The Tai Forest is a natural reservoir of the Ebola virus. The World Health Organization has expressed concern over the proximity of this reservoir to the International Airport at Abidjan.

Lake Kossou

Lake Kossou is the largest lake in Côte dIvoire. It lies in the center of the country on the Bandama River. It is an artificial lake, created in 1973 by damming the Bandama River at Kossou . Some 85,000 Baoulé people were displaced by the lake.

Bia National Park

Bia National Park is a national park in the Western Region of Ghana. It is also a biosphere reserve with a 563 square kilometer resource reserve. It has some of Ghanas last remnants of relatively untouched forest complete with its full diversity of wildlife. Some of the tallest trees left in West Africa are found in this national park.

Mont Sângbé National Park

Mont Sângbé National Park is a national park in Côte dIvoire, considered one of the worlds principal national parks. It acquired national park status in 1975. The National Park is located entirely within the Monts du Toura, a range of mountains west of the Sassandra River, taking in 14 peaks. It covers an area of 95,000 ha north of Man, between Biankouma and Touba. The park consists of very densely vegetated savanna woodland with wildlife populations of elephants, buffaloes, warthog, antelopes and monkeys.

Culture Palace of Abidjan

Culture Palace of Abidjan is a temple of culture in Abidjan, Ivory Coast . The building is situated between the Houphouet Boigny bridge Houphouët-Boigny Bridge and the General de Gaulle bridge. Culture Palace of Abidjan, with a capacity of 9,400 people, was bestowed to the Ivorian government as a gift from China. It was inaugurated on 1 October 1999 during the official handover of the keys. It was constructed on a 12000 square meter site. Conducted by Sidiki Bakaba since the year of 2000. Sidiki Bakaba, was honored for lifetime achievement on 10 July 2009, in the Pan-African Cultural Festival in Algiers. Since 12 November 2002, the first Fokker F27 Friendship airplane of Ivory Coast, which has a 16-person capacity, is transformed into a library for children books and annex events.

Grand-Bassam

Grand-Bassam is a city in Côte d'Ivoire, lying east of Abidjan. It was the French colonial capital city from 1893 to 1896, when the administration was transferred to Bingerville after a bout of yellow fever. The city remained a key seaport until the growth of Abidjan from the 1930s. Grand-Bassam is the chief city of Grand-Bassam Department. The city has the aura of a ghost town, since large sections have been abandoned for decades. In 1896 the French capital was moved to Bingerville, and commercial shipping gradually declined until it virtually ceased in the 1930s. In 1960, with independence, all remaining administrative offices were transferred to Abidjan, and for many years Grand Bassam was inhabited only by squatters. Beginning in the late 1970s the city began to revive as a tourist destination and craft center. It now has a year-round population of approximately 5,000. The city is divided by the Ébrié Lagoon into two halves: Ancien Bassam is the former French settlement, facing the Gulf of Guinea. It is home to the grander colonial buildings, some of which have been restored. The district is also home to a cathedral and the Côte d'Ivoire National Museum of Costume. Nouveau Bassam, linked to Ancien Bassam by a bridge, lies on the inland, northern side of the lagoon. It grew from the African servants' quarter and is now the main commercial centre of the town. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand-Bassam. The Diocese's cathedral is the Cathédrale Sacré Cœur in Grand-Bassam. In 2012, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bouaflé

Bouaflé a city in central Ivory Coast. It is a sub-prefecture of and the seat of Bouaflé Department. It is also the seat of Marahoué Region in Sassandra-Marahoué District and a commune.

MUSON Centre, is a repository of Music, Arts and Culture site and the most prestigious and exclusive performance hall in Lagos. The multipurpose civic auditorium is located in the heart of Lagos Island, situated conspicuously between the National Museum, the City Mall, the Onikan Stadium and the former official residence of the Nigeria’s Governors-Generals and adjacent to Tafawa Balewa Square.

Taï

Taï is a town in southwestern Ivory Coast. It is a sub-prefecture of and the seat of Taï Department in Cavally Region, Montagnes District. Taï is also a commune. The town is between Taï National Park and the Cavally River. The river—which is the border with Liberia—is less than two kilometres south of the town. Previously, Taï was a sub-prefecture of the Guiglo Department; Taï Department was created on 22 March 2013.

Lake Buyo

Lake Buyo is an artificial lake in western Côte dIvoire on the Sassandra River. It was formed by the construction of the Buyo Dam at Buyo in 1980. The water quality of the lake has suffered from disposal of untreated effluents and overuse of fertilizers in the surrounding areas.

N'zo Partial Faunal Reserve

The N'Zo Partial Faunal Reserve is a designated site in Côte d'Ivoire, given status in 1971. It covers 950 km2 . Together with Tai National Park this reserve holds nearly half the total population of chimpanzees in Cote d'Ivore .

Abengourou

Abengourou is a city in eastern Ivory Coast. It is the seat of both Comoé District and Indénié-Djuablin Region. It is also a commune and the seat of and a sub-prefecture of Abengourou Department. Abengourou is primarily populated by the Anyi ethnic group, a branch of the Akan people who migrated to the region from Ghana. In the 2014 census, the population of Abengourou was 135,635. The city is served by Abengourou Airport. There is also the interior's largest hospital. There is an agricultural vocational training institute, along with a research station that specializes in the local crops of cocoa and coffee. These crops are then transported the 151 kilometres to Abidjan for export. Within the city is the residence of the Anyi paramount chief, who is also the King of Indénié. His home was built in 1882 and is decorated with artifacts. The name "Abengourou" stems from the Akan language expression "n'pé kro", which means "I don't like long discussions". The city is home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Abengourou, with its cathedral at the Cathédrale Sainte Thérèse de l'enfant Jésus.

Korhogo

Korhogo is a city in northern Ivory Coast. It is the seat of both Savanes District and Poro Region. It is also a commune and the seat of and a sub-prefecture of Korhogo Department. In the 2014 census, the city had a population of 286,071, making it the fourth-largest city in the country and the largest in northern Ivory Coast. Korhogo produces goods such as cotton, kapok, rice, millet, peanuts, corn, yams, sheep, goats and diamonds. The settlement was on an important pre-colonial trade route to the Atlantic coast. It is said to have been founded by Nangui, a 14th-century Senufo patriarch and still is the capital of the Senufo people. Sights in Korhogo include the Péléforo Gbon Coulibaly Regional Museum and the woodcarvers' quarter. Korhogo is also home to an airport, a large market, a cinema, a mosque, and a swimming pool. Korhogo's average annual rainfall is 1,243 mm, with the rainiest months being May to October. Its average year-round temperature is 26.6 degrees Celsius, with the hottest months being February to April. Korhogo's airport has the International Air Transport Association code HGO and the International Civil Aviation Organization code DIKO. Its one runway is 2,100 metres long, and receives domestic flights only. The southwest quarter of the city is dominated by Mont-Korhogo.

Bouake

Bouaké is the second-largest city in Ivory Coast, with a population of 536,189 . It is the seat of three levels of subdivision—Vallée du Bandama District, Gbêkê Region, and Bouaké Department. The city is located in the central part of Ivory Coast about 50 kilometres northeast of Lake Kossou, the country's largest lake. It is approximately 350 kilometres north of Abidjan on the Abidjan-Niger Railway and about 100 kilometres northeast of Yamoussoukro, the capital of the country. Bouaké is a centre for the Baoulé people and is known for its crafts. The economy is based on the cotton industry. The city largely grew from the 1970s after the construction of the power station at Kossou Lake flooded land to the west of the city. Bouaké is known for its large carnival and market and for the St Michael's Cathedral. The city has a large airport located north-west of the city with a 3,300 metres runway. Liverpool F.C defender Kolo Touré and his brothers Yaya Touré and Ibrahim Touré were born in Bouaké.

Man is a city in western Ivory Coast. It is the seat of both Montagnes District and Tonkpi Region. It is also a commune and the seat of and a sub-prefecture of Man Department. In the 2014 census, Man had a population of 188,704, making it the eighth-largest city in the country.

Odienné

Odienné is a town in northwestern Ivory Coast. It is the seat of both Denguélé District and Kabadougou Region. It is also a commune and the seat of and a sub-prefecture of Odienné Department. West of Odienné is the Den Kelen Massif. The town of Odienné was founded by Malinké people under Vakaba Tourié (who is buried in the town). Later, Samory Touré founded a support base in the town. Features of Odienné include a large mosque and nearby gold mines. The Den Kelen Massif is a solitary granite mountain, 600 metres above sea level, about 15 kilometres to the west of, and visible from, Odienné. "Den Kelen" means "one child" or "only child" in Jula, the local Manding variety. The town is served by Odienné Airport. The Stade Municipal is a multi-purpose stadium in the town.

Yopougon

Yopougon, also known colloquially as Yop City, is a suburb of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. It is the most populous of the 10 urban communes of Abidjan and covers most of the western territory of the city. Yopougon is the only commune of Abidjan that spans both north and south sides of Ébrié Lagoon. Yopougon is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Yopougon. The diocese's cathedral is the Cathédrale Saint-André. Olympic Burkinabé swimmer Adama Ouedraogo was born in Yopougon. The suburb was the scene of violence following the 2010 Ivorian presidential election.

Comoé National Park Research Station

The Comoé National Park Research Station, located in the Comoé National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, was founded by Professor Karl Eduard Linsenmair in 1989/90. Its state of the art facilities, with electricity, running water, Internet and a large climatised laboratory make it one of the most modern field stations in Africa. The research station was forced to close after the outbreak of the First Ivorian Civil War in 2002. After the end of the Second Ivorian Civil War in 2011 repairs at the station began and in 2014 the station had achieved again its full working capacity. The focus of the field based research is on conservation, tropical ecology and behaviour.

Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny

Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, nicknamed "le Félicia", is a multi-purpose stadium, which can host football, rugby and athletics, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. It is the national stadium of the Côte d'Ivoire national football team. It is named after the first president of the country, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and is located in the commune of Le Plateau. The stadium has a capacity of 35,000. It also hosts matches of the ASEC Abidjan. It has been the site of several deadly stampedes.

Kossou Dam

The Kossou Dam is an embankment dam the Bandama River about 32 kilometres northwest of Yamoussoukro in Côte d'Ivoire. It has a power generating capacity of 174 megawatts , enough to power over 118,000 homes. The dam impounds the largest lake in Côte d'Ivoire, Lake Kossou.

Haut Bandama Fauna and Flora Reserve

The Haut Bandama Fauna and Flora Reserve is found in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa. It was established in 1973 and covers 123 km². According to Marchesi et al. 1995, the estimated total number of chimpanzees in this reserve is 300 individuals.
