Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is the northernmost wildlife sanctuary of Kerala, southwest India. A mere 55 km2 in area and located on the western slope of the Western Ghats. It was established in 1984. The headquarters of the sanctuary is near Iritty. Aralam wildlife sanctuary is the northernmost protected area of Kerala state, situated in the southeast part of Kannur District. It lies between 11° 54 and 11° 59 North latitude and 75° 47 and 75° 57 East longitude. The sanctuary area falls in Aralam, Kelakam and Kottiyoor revenue villages and is located in the Northwest slopes of Western Ghats contiguous with the forests of Coorg district of Karnataka state. The PA consists of Aralam Range, the only Range of Aralam wildlife division, which is part of Northern Wildlife Circle Palakkad. The extent of the sanctuary is 55 km2 .The sanctuary was constituted in the year 1984 as per GO 300AD dated 15-10-84. It was formed by carving out areas from the Odanthode Malavaram of Thalassery special division which was an erstwhile private forest, subsequently taken over by Govt. as per the provisions of the Kerala Private Forests Act 1971 and from the Kottiyoor RF of Wayanad Forest Division. The Vested Forest portion of the sanctuary is 32.64 km2 and the 22.36 km2 is part of Kottiyoor RF . Till 30.6.98 this sanctuary was a Range in Wayanad Wildlife Division. It started functioning as an independent wildlife division since 1.7.98 as per GO 36/98 dated 27.5.98. In the First Management Plan the entire area was divided into two zones viz: the Core Zone and the Buffer Zone.Climatic factors include rainfall, temperature, humidity, frost and so on. Average rainfall : 4000 mm Temperature : 110 c to 400 c Humidity : 60 to 100 % Wind : Regular wind during Southwest monsoon Water source : Cheenkannipuzha Rainfall Rainfall data available in the Central State Farm, Aralam, which is just adjoining to the sanctuary area has been analysed. Major source of moisture in the tract is in the form of rainfall. The total annual rainfall seldom falls below 4000 mm. The maximum annual value for the nine years data available is 5052.60 mm and the minimum is 3745.50 mm. In specialised localities, in the higher reaches, the rainfall even goes as high as over 6000mm. Lion share of the rainfall is obtained during the southwest monsoon in June, July and August months. The retreating monsoon though less pronounced, is an important source of moisture in October, November and December months, which constitutes 14% of the total. Summer rains vary widely and is not dependable. It is a well-known fact that in the Peninsular India the vegetation type and growing period are determined by the extent of dry period rather than by the amount of rainfall. The spread of rainy days across time is a crucial determining factor in the plant growth. The dry period in the area varies between 3 to 4 months when the monthly rainfall is below 50 mm, and the number of rainy days varies from 100-120. Variation is observed in the quantity of rainfall as the altitude changes to higher levels. Temperature The temperature at the foothills varies from 110c to 400c. The diurnal variations are moderate. As the altitude increases the variation is comparatively minimal which is between 80c and 250c. The hottest months are April and May. December to February is relatively cool. Humidity At the foothills the humidity varies from 60 to 100%. Winds Regular winds lash the area during the southwest monsoon period. Strong winds of dry nature blow from September to April, causing dryness in the locality. With the result there is fire hazard, especially in the deciduous forests. Microclimate Locations where very high rainfall and peculiar soil conditions in the folds of the hills bring in specialised microclimatic situations leading to a peculiar habitat, which support relatively specialised vegetation. Such portions are found here and there on the higher reaches.

Sree Ramaswami Temple

Sree Ramaswami temple or commonly known as Thiruvangad temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Sree Rama, is an important temple located in the east part of Thalassery. The temple is generally known as the Brass Pagoda from the copper sheeting of its roof. A part of the temple was damaged by Tipu Sultans troops in the 18th century, but the temple itself is believed to have been saved from destruction. It was one of the outposts of the Thalassery fort in the eighteenth century. In its precincts were held many conferences between the officials of the East India Company and local leaders, at which political treaties and agreements were signed. The temple contains some interesting sculptures and lithic records. The annual festival of temple commences on Vishu day in Medam and lasts for seven days. It is one of the five major shrines dedicated to Lord Sree Rama in Kerala. The other four are at Thrinayamkudam, Triprayar, Thiruvilluamala and Kadalur. It is Located on an elevated plot of 2.75 hectares with an adjoining temple tank known as Chira which extends over an area of one hectare, This well maintained temple has excellent wood carvings, terracota art work, mural paintings carved on wooden planks in the ceilings are a repository of art treasure. the big temple tank is a rare one and useful to the devotees. sathram, guesthouses for stay and kalyana mandapam are also well maintained.

Thalassery Pier

Thalassery Pier locally known as Kadalpalam is located in Thalassery, Kannur District of Kerala state, south India. It is an old pier extending out into the Arabian Sea. It is frequented by people taking evening walks. This "Kadalpalam" was used as a commercial access through the sea, to and from the Tellicherry Bazar, during the European rule. It is an old story now. At present it is in a deteriorating state. Now it can be preserved as a Tourist Centre. It was in 1910 that the East India Company constructed the pier which extends to the Arabian Sea for transporting commodities to and from ships. The large rocks on the shore and shallow waters often led to shipwrecks and hence the pier was constructed, with huge cranes placed at its end and rail tracks on either side for easy transport of goods from the godowns situated at the shore. A busy commercial centre then, Thalassery witnessed brisk development with its export of spices, coffee, fish, wood, and pepper, attracting people from all over. The town became an administrative centre of operations and the judicial headquarters while the port stood a mute observer to the glory of the town and its development. It was the advent of the Mangalore port which reduced its significance principally, while many more aspects contributed to its slow degeneration. The ships disappeared, and gradually the cranes and the trolley tracks.

Kottiyoor Temple

Kottiyoor Temple is a prominent Shiva temple in Kerala. Vadakkeshwaram Temple is the common name of the temple from ancient time, but some of the local people addresses the temple as Ikkare Kottiyoor as it in the bank of the river close to the Kottiyoor village; to differentiate it from the shrine in the other side of the river. Thruchherumana Kshetram is the proper name of Kottiyoor temple. The temple is a special category temple under Malabar Devaswom board. There are two temples in Kottiyoor one on the western bank of the Bavali river and the other one on the eastern bank of the Bavali river. The shrine on the east bank is a temporary hermitage opened only during the Vysakha festival. The Vadakkeshwaram or Ikkare Kottiyoor on the western bank of the river is a permanent temple complex like all other temples. It remains closed throughout the year except for the 27 days of Vysakha festival. The temple is situated in a densely forested area amidst a sacred grove that covers about 80 acres. Mythology says that Akkare Kottiyoor, the shrine on the eastern bank of the river, was the location of Daksha Yaga, at the conclusion of which, Sati Devi immolated herself and thus committed suicide in this place. The Thruchherumana Temple was built after the Swayambhoo lingam was found; however the exact date of construction of temple is not known, the pilgrimage has been taking place for many centuries.

Mattannur

Mattanur, also spelt Mattannur, is a town and a municipality in the Kannur district, state of Kerala, India. Mattanur is around 25 km east of Kannur town and Thalassery. Pin code of Mattanur is 670702. Mattannur lies between Kannur, Thalassery and Iritty. The inter-state buses ply between Bangalore and Thalassery, Kannur passes through Mattanur. It is an important hub connecting Kodagu and Kannur. Though small, it has many attractions. The town has developed around the Mattanur Mahadeva temple. 15-Mattannur Assembly Constituency and its extent Mattanur Municicpality and Chittariparamba, Keezhallur, Koodali, Malur, Mangattidam, Kolayad, Padiyoor Kalliad and Thillenkeri Panchayats in Thalassery Taluk. The proposed Kannur Airport is just about 5 km from Mattanur, which makes it the closest town to the Airport.

Thalassery railway station

Thalassery Railway Station is a major railway station serving the town of Thalassery in Kannur District of Kerala. It lies in the Shoranur - Mangalore Section of the Southern Railways. The station has 2 platforms and 3 tracks. Though no trains originate from this station, trains halting at the station connect the town to prominent cities in India such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Quilon, New Delhi, Mangalore, Pune, Jaipur, Jammu Tawi, Okha and so forth. The old platform ticket counter is closed after the renovation of Thalassry Railway Station. The new ticket counter is located at Platform No. 02. the Road which connects Thalassery railway station is known as Goodshed Road which is now often referred as new railway station road. Thalassery railway station once had goods transportation facility. which is now discontinued and moved to Dharmadam Railway Station.
