New Zealand Parliament Buildings

The New Zealand Parliament Buildings house the New Zealand Parliament and are on a 45,000 square metre site at the northern end of Lambton Quay, Wellington. They consist of Parliament House, the executive wing , the Parliamentary Library, and Bowen House. Whilst most of the individual buildings are outstanding for different reasons, the overall setting that has been achieved "has little aesthetic or architectural coherence".

Wellington Zoo

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the national museum and art gallery of New Zealand, located in Wellington. It is branded and commonly known as Te Papa and Our Place; "Te Papa Tongarewa" is broadly translatable as "the place of treasures of this land". The museum's principles incorporate the concepts of unified collections; the narratives of culture and place; the idea of forum; the bicultural partnership between indigenous people (Tangata Whenua) and non-indigenous people (Tangata Tiriti); and an emphasis on diversity and multidisciplinary collaboration. In January 2013 Te Papa management announced the museum would be split into two parts – one operating much as it has in the past, and the other focusing on the future.

Fort Buckley

The remains of Fort Buckley, in Wellington, New Zealand, overlook the Interislander ferry terminal, the Wellington Harbour the Wellington Motorway towards the Hutt Valley. The fort was built in 1885, and included two rifled 64 pounder muzzle-loading guns, which had a range of about three kilometres. An original photo of the guns is shown on the Capital Defence site "Sixty four pound gun at Fort Buckley, Kaiwharawhara, Wellington" 1886:. During World War 2 an anti-aircraft gun was installed on the former caretakers cottage area located in the slopes above the gun-pits and midway up the overall site. Today only the concrete foundations of the two RML gun-pits remain, but the anti-aircraft guns original location used on the old caretakers cottage pad during World War 2 is harder to spot, though the concrete pad foundation of the cottage is obvious. The Fort Buckley site land is now owned by the Wellington City Council, and has been set aside as a reserve since 2010. Since becoming a reserve the Fort Buckley site is now highly accessible, with a well formed gravel path installed and a prominently sign posted fenced site entrance from Barnard Street in Wadestown, Wellington. The path to the fort has been cleared of vegetation and scrub many times over the years, and at times the cuttings have been dumped in the gun pits and built up. The Fort Buckley site is now regularly maintained and enhanced by the Highland Park Progressive Association HPPA residents group in partnership with the Wellington City Council. The HPPA has researched a detailed pamphlet about the history of Fort Buckley and copies are available from a container beside the wooden Fort Buckley sign. Various community social activities, including family picnics, Geo-caching, track walking, are regularly taking place onsite. During March 2014 the HPPA installed a large picnic table on the former caretakers cottage concrete pad and significantly sprayed and cleared further vegetation with assistance of teams from the WCC. Heritage New Zealand lists Fort Buckley as being of national historical significance. The long-term goal is to either locate the original 64-pounder guns, which are believed to be buried in Palmerston North, or to have replica iron guns cast to be placed in the two gun pits. Wellington Cathedral of St Paul

The Wellington Cathedral of St Paul is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington, New Zealand and the seat of its bishop of Wellington. Construction began in 1955, and was completed in 1998. It was constructed in reinforced concrete due to the effects of the 1931 Napier earthquake, making other choices impractical. It began functioning as a cathedral in 1964. The wooden Lady Chapel is on the "north" side of the cathedral. The Lady Chapel was moved to Wellington Cathedral from its original site in Paraparaumu in 1990.

Basin Reserve

The Basin Reserve is a cricket ground in Wellington, New Zealand, used for Test, first-class and one-day cricket. The Basin Reserve is the only cricket ground in New Zealand to have Historic Place status as it is the oldest test cricket ground in New Zealand. A giant cinema screen stretching between the ground, first and second floors shows a series of films about Wellington. There are three theatre areas: one tells Maori legends using a 'Peppers Ghost', the other is a memorial to the tragic sinking of the Wahine ferry in Wellington harbour and located on the top floor a Wellington Time Machine. A new exhibition space, The Attic, has opened in late 2015 after extensive refurbishment and restoration to the top floor.

Wellington Botanic Garden

The winding hill paths of the Garden are a popular spot for Wellington residents. It is used for walking, jogging and taking children to the playground, and tourists enjoy meandering through the Gardens many collections via the downhill path to the city. The Gardens feature a large Victorian-style glasshouse, the Begonia House, the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and the Treehouse Visitor Centre. There is a large childrens play area, a duck pond, and even glowworms visible some nights along paths in the Main Garden there are monthly tours during autumn-spring . Large sculptures and carvings are located throughout the garden. These are by artists such as Henry Moore, Andrew Drummond and Chris Booth. The Wellington City Council organises events during spring and summer months, such as free concerts in the Sound Shell. The New Zealand Olympic Museum, was situated on Queens Wharf, Wellington, New Zealand. It was established on 23 June 1998 and closed in January 2013 after the New Zealand Olympic Committee relocated to Auckland. The museums collection focuses on New Zealand’s involvement in the Olympic Movement and promoting Olympic Values. The NZOC intends to reintroduce the museums collection through digital activity and outreach programmes to other museums.

Fort Ballance

Fort Ballance is a coastal artillery battery in the Wellington suburb of Miramar, New Zealand. Built in 1885 following fears of an impending war with Russia, Fort Ballance is one of the best preserved of a string of nineteenth century coastal defences constructed to protect New Zealand from a naval attack. In 1885, the Government, reluctantly acknowledging that they could not rely solely on Britain for protection, commissioned engineer Major Henry Cautley to design a series of fortifications to protect the countrys main ports. The Fortress is listed as a Category I Historic Place.

City to Sea Bridge

The City to Sea Bridge is a pedestrian bridge and public artwork located in Wellington City, New Zealand. Opened in 1994, the wedge-shaped bridge crosses arterial road Jervois Quay, connecting the public spaces of Civic Square to the Wellington waterfront precinct at the Lagoon. Around the square are the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington Town Hall, Wellington City Art Gallery and Wellington Central Library. The bridge is adorned with non-traditional wooden sculptures carved by prominent Māori artist Paratene Matchitt, some of which form the sides of the bridge. The bridge has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

Karapoti Gorge

Karapoti Gorge is one of the entrances into the Akatarawa Forest, a regional park in the Wellington Region in New Zealand. The Akatarawa River West runs through this narrow, mostly bush-clad gorge towards the Akatarawa Valley. A narrow road winds its way along the steep slopes, providing access for trail biking, mountain biking and walking. Karapoti Gorge is also the starting leg of the annual Karapoti Classic mountain bike event, which runs on the network of tracks in the Akatarawa Forest.

New Zealand Tomb of the Unknown Warrior

The New Zealand Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is at the National War Memorial in Buckle Street, Wellington. The remains of the Warrior, one of the 18,166 New Zealand casualties of World War I, were exhumed on 10 October 2004 from the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, near where the New Zealand Division fought in 1916.

It exemplifies 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture adapted to colonial conditions and materials, and stands at 34 Mulgrave Street, Thorndon, Wellington, New Zealand, close to the New Zealand Parliament.

TSB Bank Arena

The TSB Bank Arena, formerly known as the Queens Wharf Events Centre, is an indoor arena, located in Wellington, New Zealand. The arena hosts mainly basketball games and is the home arena for the Century City Saints and part-time home arena of the New Zealand Breakers when they play in Wellington, but also hosts expositions and conventions like the Armageddon Pulp Expo and the DCM Book Fair. Built in 1995, it originally held 3,635 people. In 2005, the number of seats was upgraded to 4,570 as part of a redevelopment and expansion plan. There were further plans to carry out upgrades to the Events Centre in 2007 although it is unknown if these plans went ahead. It also operates as a music venue, but does not have ideal acoustics and professional sound treatment; for example, the retractable stadium traps all reflections also acting as a bass trap, thus impairing a clear sound, but as a live venue, it is still able attract overseas acts. It is also the home arena for the Richter City Roller Derby which started to play here in the middle of their 2009 season. In 2005, the annual Montana World of WearableArt Awards Show moved from Nelson to Wellington, to the TSB Bank Arena. In a feature article from the 11 April 2007 edition of the Dominion Post, the Wellington Architectural Centre rated TSB Arena as Wellingtons 2nd worst building. Also in 2007 the first Māori Art Market was held in the arena before moving to the suburban Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua City. In July 2011 Positively Wellington Venues, an integration between the Wellington Convention Centre and the St James Theatre Trust, began managing this Arena along with five other venues in the capital city.

Zealandia

Zealandia, formerly known as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected natural area in Wellington, New Zealand, where the biodiversity of 225 ha of forest is being restored. The sanctuary was previously part of the water catchment area for Wellington, between Wrights Hill and the Brooklyn wind turbine on Polhill. Most of New Zealands ecosystems have been severely modified by the introduction of land mammals that were not present during the evolution of its ecosystems, and have had a devastating impact on both native flora and fauna. The sanctuary, surrounded by a pest-exclusion fence, is a good example of an ecological island, which allows the natural ecosystems to thrive by minimising those introduced pressures. The sanctuary has become a significant tourist attraction in Wellington and is responsible for the greatly increased number of sightings of species such as tui and kākā in citys suburbs. The sanctuary has inspired a raft of similar projects throughout New Zealand, with predator-proof fences now protecting the biodiversity of many other areas of forest. Examples include the 7.7 hectare lowland podocarp forest remnant of Riccarton bush/ Putaringamotu, the 98 hectare Bushy Park and, the 3500 hectare Maungatautari Restoration Project enclosing an entire mountain.

Embassy Theatre

The Embassy Theatre is a movie theatre in Wellington, New Zealand, located at the Eastern end of Courtenay Place in the shadow of Mount Victoria. Originally built in 1924, the building has undergone a series of remodels and changes in ownership. It is currently owned by the Wellington City Council and temporarily administered by the Embassy Theatre Trust. Management rights were sold to SKYCITY Cinemas in October 2005, and is now part of AHL owned Event Cinemas. The theatre is recognised as a place of historical/cultural significance by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and is the only custom-built 1920s cinema still in use in New Zealand.

Tararua Forest Park

Tararua Forest Park, often called the Tararuas is a protected area in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Its area is 116,535 ha, and its highest point, a peak called Mitre, is at 1571 m above sea level. It was established in 1954, as New Zealands first Forest Park, and is managed by the Department of Conservation under the Conservation Act. Tararua Forest Park includes more than three-quarters of the Tararua Range, and its boundaries extend north from New Zealand State Highway 2.

Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park

In 1998 the Wellington City Council set aside 200 hectares of retired farmland in Karori southwest of Wellington, New Zealand for a mountain bike park. Development of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park began almost immediately with volunteer work parties planting trees, removing pest animals and digging new tracks. By 2014 the park had grown to 250 hectares with over 40 kilometres of hand-built single track and over 35,000 native seedlings planted. Pests such as goats, sheep, and possums had been dramatically reduced with volunteers maintaining possum traps and bait stations and mustelid traps, allowing new vegetation to flourish. The park is free to use and open to both cyclists and pedestrians. Approximately 30% of its users are pedestrians. The Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park was visited by 8% of the Wellington population in 2003 according to research carried out by the Wellington City Council. It has received a recreation award from the New Zealand Recreation Association and two conservation awards from the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The park is jointly managed by the Wellington City Council and Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park Supporters Inc.

Newtown Park

Newtown Park is a multi-purpose stadium in Wellington, New Zealand. It is currently used mostly for football matches and athletic events. The main pitch has a 400 metre, all-weather rubberized athletics track around it, as well as the spectator stands and the corporate loungue. A second, rectangular pitch is attached south of the main facility.

Wellington Regional Stadium

Wellington Regional Stadium is a major sporting venue in Wellington, New Zealand. Due to its shape and silver coloured external walls, it is colloquially known as "The Cake Tin". The stadiums bowl site size is 48,000 sq m. The stadium was built in 1999 by Fletcher Construction and is situated close to major transport facilities one kilometre north of the CBD. It was built on reclaimed railway land, which was surplus to requirements. It was built to replace Athletic Park, which was no longer considered adequate for international events due to its location and state of disrepair. The stadium was also built to provide a larger-capacity venue for One Day International cricket matches, due to the Basin Reserve ground losing such matches to larger stadia in other parts of the country. The stadium also serves as a large-capacity venue for concerts and is also the only stadium that has hosted an Australian Football League game outside of Australia.

Lake Kohangapiripiri

Lake Kohangapiripiri is one of the two freshwater Pencarrow lakes in Fitzroy Bay the other being the slightly larger Lake Kohangatera. It stands to the east of Pencarrow Head, on the eastern side of New Zealands Wellington Harbour, in East Harbour Regional Park, and is fed by Cameron Stream which rises on private land to its north. The Pencarrow lakes formed in valleys which became blocked to the nearby sea after earthquakes changed the topography.

Lake Kohangatera

Lake Kohangatera is one of two lakes in Fitzroy Bay . It has an open water area of 17 hectares and is fed by Gollans Stream, which has its headwaters on Mount Lowry, 14 km to the north. The drainage basin area is about 1,700 ha. The lakes southern end extends close to the sea where it is dammed by the gravel and sand of old earthquake raised beaches. The lake itself is a protected wildlife reserve managed by DOC and no fishing is allowed there. It is also part of the East Harbour regional park . It has both significant historical and biological values; a large colony of black shags can be found on the northern edge of the lake and there is substantial archaeological evidence of a Māori fishing village existing there in pre-European times.

Beehive (New Zealand)

The Beehive is the common name for the Executive Wing of the New Zealand Parliament Buildings, located at the corner of Molesworth Street and Lambton Quay, Wellington. It is so-called because of its shape is reminiscent of that of a traditional woven form of beehive known as a "skep". It is registered as a Category I heritage building by Heritage New Zealand.
