Top Attractions in Elsene

Place Flagey

Place Eugène Flagey, is a square in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles, Belgium. It was named in honour of Eugène Flagey, mayor of Ixelles from 1935 to 1953. With ten streets converging at Flagey Square, it is one of the best connected crossroads in the city, directly adjacent to the neighbouring Ixelles Ponds . A large flood control reservoir and a parking lot have been built under the square. The area comprising the square was covered by the Ixelles Ponds until 1860 when one of the original ponds was drained as part of new urban design. Beginning in 2002 the square was extensively renovated. Prior to the renovation the square had been primarily used as an open air parking lot. The project was infamously delayed many times and all activity had to grind to a halt for sometimes months on end. The plans were remade in 2004 partially on the demand of the local residents association. Among their demands were the complete ellimination of above ground parking in the square. The original plan was not deemed ambitious enough and a new competition was launched for international bids from different architects. LatzPartner and D + A International eventually won the contract. Official celebrations for the reopening of Flagey Square took place in July 2008. Events held included fireworks, concerts, guided visits and film screenings. However, at the time of the official opening, and still as of 2010, the subterranean parking which was built below the square was not opened. The risk of flooding as well as other structural problems forced authorities to keep the facility closed. Place Flagey is famous for: the art deco building occupying its entire southern side, the former Maison de la Radio, renamed to "Flagey" in 2002. It now hosts a cultural center. Its "Studio 4" is one of the concert halls with the best acoustics worldwide, home to the Brussels Philharmonic. It is also used as a recording studio; the award-winning soundtrack of movie The Artist was recorded here. the building on the opposite side of the square to "Flagey", which houses the first supermarket ever opened in Belgium, a Delhaize. the Frit Flagey stand, serving chips cooked the traditional Belgian way, among the best in Brussels.

St Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church in Brussels is a congregation in membership of both the Church of Scotland and the United Protestant Church in Belgium (in French Eglise Protestante Unie de Belgique and in Dutch Verenigde Protestantse Kerk in België.) Services are conducted in English. The congregation's mission statement is "We aspire to follow Jesus in bringing the knowledge of God's love to all". In 1830, a Presbyterian Scots Kirk was founded in Belgium and the Reverend Charles Siveright was the first minister. However after the Belgian revolution, there are no further written records of this church. In 1898, The Reverend Francis Gordon was sent to Belgium and conducted Presbyterian church services in various locations in Brussels. This arrangement with services in different places continued for 27 years. The Reverend George R.S. Reid took over from Gordon as minister in 1899 and 150 people attended a Congregational meeting that year. In 1900, the first Elders were ordained. the Kirk Session set up and a special fund created to raise money for building a church. In 1900 the Brussels congregation was included in the Church of Scotland Presbytery of Edinburgh. The present church buildings were built in 1925 as a memorial to the Scottish soldiers who had died in Belgium during World War I and can seat 200. The area surrounding the church is notable for its distinctive early 20th century Art Nouveau houses, notably the nearby home of the architect Victor Horta. The once small congregation has grown considerably in recent years, especially as a result of the UK’s accession to the Common Market in 1973 and the location of numerous international organisations in Brussels, including the European Union and NATO. The congregation in 2013 was very multinational, with more than 30 different nationalities represented. The largest numbers of people came from the UK and Ghana. As of 2014, the minister is the Reverend Dr Andrew Gardner BSc PhD BD, formerly of Flowerhill Parish Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Ixelles Ponds

The Ixelles Ponds are two freshwater ponds in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles. The ponds we can see today are those spared by a 19th-century campaign of drying the wetlands of the Maalbeek valley between the Abbey of La Cambre and Flagey Square. The two long and narrow ponds, whose total lengths are approximately 700 metres, and widths are approximately 50 metres, are aligned on a roughly North-South axis and are separated by a narrow strip of land. With the surrounding park, the Ixelles Ponds are the tip of a long strip of almost uninterrupted greenery reaching all the way from the Sonian Forest deep into the urban tissue of Brussels. The ponds are an extremely popular recreation area for local residents, pertaining to the Belgian upper-crust. However, the water is polluted with cyanobacteria and signs posted at regular intervals warn of a risk of botulism. All contact with the water is prohibited, as is sitting on the grass in the immediate vicinity of the water, although the latter rule is not strictly enforced. In spite of the pollution, waterfowl thrive around the ponds.

Chaussée de Wavre

The Chaussée de Wavre or Waversesteenweg in Brussels, Belgium is a major street crossing the municipalities of Ixelles, Etterbeek and Auderghem. It starts at a crossroad with the Chaussée d'Ixelles near the Porte de Namur square in Ixelles, goes down to the Place Jourdan in Etterbeek, then goes up to the La Chasse crossroad, continues to the Arsenal crossroad with the greater ring road. After this crossroad the street enters Auderghem, crosses the Boulevard du Souverain then merges with the European route E411 where it runs along the Rouge-Cloître and then the Sonian Forest. At its end, the road crosses the Brussels Ring. This street is part of the N4 road, which connects Brussels to Arlon. Several places of interest are located on the Chaussée de Wavre, among which the Vendôme cinema, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the Jean-Félix Hap Garden.
