Brasilia

Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located atop the Brazilian highlands in the country's center-western region. It was founded on April 21, 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília and its metro had a population of 2,556,149 in 2011, making it the 4th most populous city in Brazil. Among major Latin American cities, Brasília has the highest GDP per capita at R$61,915 . Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 in order to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of Brazil are in Brasília, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. The city also hosts 124 foreign embassies. Brasília International Airport connects the capital to all major Brazilian cities and many international destinations, and is the third busiest airport in Brazil. The city has a unique status in Brazil, as it is an administrative division rather than a legal municipality like other cities in Brazil. The name 'Brasília' is commonly used as a synonym for the Federal District through synecdoche; However, the Federal District is composed of 31 administrative regions, only one of which is Brasília proper, with a population of 209,926 in a 2011 survey; Demographic publications generally do not make this distinction and list the population of Brasília as synonymous with the population of the Federal District, considering the whole of it as its metropolitan area. The city was one of the main host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, Brasília hosted the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Monumental Axis

The Monumental Axis is a central avenue in Brasílias city design. The avenue begins on the National Congress of Brazil building and is considered part of the DF-002 road. Its first section is known as "Ministries Esplanade", as it is surrounded by ministries buildings. Many important government buildings, monuments and memorials are located on the Monumental Axis. A common urban legend persists that the Monumental Axis is the widest road in the world, where " cars can drive side by side". This is untrue, as the road consists of two avenues with six lanes on either side; a total of twelve lanes. However, the street has been featured in the Guinness Book of Records as having the widest central reservation of a dual carriageway in the world. On April 21, 2008, a year before they formally broke up, the Mexican pop group RBD performed a free concert to a crowd of 500.000 on the Monumental Axis during Empezar Desde Cero Tour 2008. The show was to celebrate the 48th Anniversary of the founding of Brasilia. It was recorded and released as a DVD titled Live in Brasilia. The crowd in attendance was the largest for which the group had performed.

Brasilia Digital TV Tower

The Brasilia Digital TV Tower, also known as cerrado flower, is a broadcast tower which made digital television signal available for the whole Federal District and surroundings. Despite having been initially planned to open to the public on April 21, 2010, as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the City of Brasília, the tower was only inaugurated two years later on April 21, 2012. The tower has been projected by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and has cost R$ 75 million. The tower is 180 meters tall, from which 120 meters correspond to a concrete structure and the rest to the metallic structure of the television antenna. Moreover, two glass observatories complete the structure. The highest one at 80 meters above the ground contains a restaurant with a panoramic view. The other one is used as an art gallery.

Praça dos Três Poderes

Praça dos Três Poderes is a plaza in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The name is derived from the presence of the three governmental powers around the plaza: the Executive, represented by the Palácio do Planalto ; the Legislative represented by the Congresso Nacional ; and the Judiciary, represented by the Supremo Tribunal Federal . The plaza was designed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer as a place where the three powers would meet harmoniously, it has now become a tourist attraction of Brasília. The plaza is home to the largest flag in the world to be flown regularly . The Brazilian flag hoisted weighs about 600 kilograms and has never been taken down since the capital was inaugurated on 21 April 1960. The flag is changed monthly in the presence of Presidential Guard Battalion, Independence Dragoons, other troops and sometimes the President of Brazil.

Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha

Estádio Nacional de Brasília Mané Garrincha, also known as Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, Estádio Nacional de Brasília, Arena Mané Garrincha or simply Mané Garrincha, is a football stadium and multipurpose arena, located in Brasília, DF. The stadium is one of several structures that comprise the Poliesportivo Ayrton Senna Complex, which also includes the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium and Nelson Piquet International Autodrome., among others. Opened in 1974, the stadium had a total capacity of 45,200 people. After the reconstruction of 2010 – 2013, the capacity was increased to 72,788 people, making it the second largest stadium in Brazil and one of the largest in South America. It was re-inaugurated on May 18, 2013 following renovations completed in preparation for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup. The original architect was Ícaro de Castro Mello. The project was completed at a cost of US$900 million, against an original budget of US$300 million, making the stadium the second-most expensive football stadium in the world after England's Wembley Stadium. Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha is owned by the Department of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Distrito Federal. The name is a homage to the football legend Mané Garrincha, who won the 1958 and 1962 World Cup with the Brazil national team.

Juscelino Kubitschek bridge

Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, also called President JK Bridge or JK Bridge, is a steel and concrete bridge crossing Lake Paranoá in Brasília, Brazil. It links the eastern shore of the lake to the center of the city, through the Monumental Axis. Inaugurated on December 15, 2002, the bridge almost immediately became a symbol of Brasília, with its distinctive silhouette. It is named for Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, former president of Brazil, who is generally considered the main figure supporting the construction of Brasília It was designed by architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mário Vila Verde. The structure of the bridge has a total length of 1,200 metres, a width of 24 metres and two carriageways with three lanes in each direction, two walkways on the sides for cyclists and pedestrians 1.5 metres wide, and three spans of 240 metres . The main span structure has four supporting pillars submerged on Lake Paranoá, and the deck weight is supported by three 200-foot-tall asymmetrical steel arches that crisscross diagonally. The decks are suspended by steel cables alternating at each side of the deck, interlacing in a twisted plane. The entire structure has a total length of 1,200 metres, and it was completed at a cost of US$56.8 million . The bridge has a pedestrian walkway and is accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists.

National Congress of Brazil

The National Congress is the legislative body of Brazil's federal government. Unlike the state Legislative Assemblies and Municipal Chambers, the Congress is bicameral, composed of the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies . The Congress meets annually in its Brasília seat from 2 February to 27 July and from 1 August to 22 December. The Senate represents the 26 states and the Federal District. Each state and the Federal District has a representation of three Senators, who are elected by popular ballot for a term of eight years. Every four years, renewal of either one third or two-thirds of the Senate takes place. The Chamber of Deputies represents the people of each state, and its members are elected for a four-year term by a proportional representation. Seats are allotted proportionally according to each state's population, with each state eligible for a minimum of 8 seats and a maximum of 70 seats . Unlike the Senate, the whole of the Chamber of Deputies is renewed every four years. Until recently it was common for politicians to switch parties and the proportion of congressional seats held by each party would often change. However, a decision of the Supremo Tribunal Federal has ruled that the seats belong to the parties and not to the politicians, and that one can only change parties and retain his seat in a very limited set of cases. Consequently, politicians who abandon the party for which they were elected now face the loss of their Congressional seat. Each house of the Brazilian Congress elects its President and the other members of its directing board from among its members. The President of the Senate is ex officio the President of the National Congress, and in that capacity summons and presides over joint sessions, as well as over the joint services of both Houses. The President of the Chamber is second in the presidential line of succession while the President of the Senate is third.

Banco Central do Brasil

The Central Bank of Brazil is Brazil's central bank. It was established on December 31, 1964. The Central Bank is linked with the Ministry of Finance. Like other central banks, the Brazilian central bank is the principal monetary authority of the country. It received this authority when it was founded by three different institutions: the Bureau of Currency and Credit , the Bank of Brazil , and the National Treasury. One of the main instruments of Brazil's monetary policy is the Banco Central do Brasil's overnight rate, called the SELIC rate. The Bank is active in promoting financial inclusion policy and is a leading member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion. It is also one of the original 17 regulatory institutions to make specific national commitments to financial inclusion under the Maya Declaration during the 2011 Global Policy Forum in Mexico.
