Visby

Visby [ˈviːspʏ] is a locality and the seat of Gotland Municipality in Gotland County, Sweden with 23,576 inhabitants, as of 2012. Visby is also the episcopal see for the Diocese of Visby. It is the only locality with historical city status on the island of Gotland. The Hanseatic city of Visby is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and since 1995, it is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Among the most notable historical remains are the 3.4 km long town wall that encircles the town center, and a number of church ruins. Visby is a popular vacation destination for Scandinavians during the summer and receives thousands of tourists every year. It is by far the most populated locality outside the Swedish mainland. Visby is also the only municipality seat of Sweden that is accessible only by boat and air traffic. The University of Gotland is in Visby, and since 1 July 2013, it is a department of Uppsala University under the name Uppsala university–Campus Gotland.

Katthammarsvik

Katthammarsvik is a small harbour settlement in the parish of Östergarn on the island of Gotland. It is located in Gotland Municipality, Gotland County. As of 2005, it was in statistical terms defined as a småort and has formerly, very briefly, held the status of a tätort . Katthammar has had a lime industry consisting of several kilns that flourished after Gotland came under Swedish rule in 1645. Burnt lime, limestone and wood products were shipped from the harbour at Katthammarsvik. With 196 inhabitants, Katthammarsvik was defined as a småort in 1990. After a rise in population to 220 in 1995, Statistics Sweden redefined it as a locality. In 2000, the population was down to 182 people and it was again defined as a small locality In 2005, the population had sunk to 176.

Björke Church

Björke Church is a medieval Lutheran church on the Swedish island of Gotland, in the Diocese of Visby. The nave is the oldest part of Björke Church, dating from the mid-13th century. The choir dates from the middle of the 14th century and replaced an earlier choir, half the size of the present one. A church tower was never built. The sacristy is the latest external addition to the church; it dates from 1860. Internally, the church ceiling is supported by six vaults two in the choir and four, resting on a central column, in the nave. Among the furnishings, the crucifix dates from 1160 and the pulpit from 1594; it is one of the oldest on Gotland. Of later date are the altarpiece and the votive ship, donated to the church in 2004. The church underwent a renovation in 1910-12.

Lojsta Castle

Lojsta Castle in Stånga socken on the border of Lojsta, Gotland, Sweden, is, despite its name, not a "castle" in the normal sense, i.e. it is not a palacelike manor. It is the ruins of a once fortified estate, consisting of houses surrounded by a wall and a moat. In the Middle Ages, Lojsta Castle was a defence-structure, placed on an island in one of the small Lojsta Lakes in the middle of Gotland. The fortress is believed to have been used by the Vitalians who supported the captured Swedish king at the time, Albert of Mecklenburg. The Vitalians were pirates and they used Gotland as their base. In 1404, they were defeated by the Teutonic Knights and forced to relinquish Lojsta Castle and the other two strongholds they had on Gotland. Today there is not much remaining of the stronghold. In the beginning of the 20th century, archaeologists surveyed the area but the theories they proposed are questioned today, for example, observations about three house foundations in the fortress. The buildings were most likely made out of wood, about 20 to 30 by 10 m, and today there are no traces of them above ground. The fortress was surrounded by a dug moat, 100 m long, 3 to 10 m wide and up to 1.7 m high, that together with an embankment and a palisade separated the fortress inner courtyard from the outer. Today, the lakes surface level is estimated at about 2.5 m lower than it was during the Middle Ages and it is divided into three smaller lakes. The remains of the fortress is situated between the Slottsträsk and the Broträsk lakes. When the fortress was in use, it had a drawbridge to the mainland, of which you can still see remains. Nowadays the ruins of the fortress can be reached by land.

Grogarnsberget

Grogarnsberget is a former hill fort in Östergarn on the Swedish island of Gotland, in size second only to Torsburgen, the largest prehistoric hill fort in Scandinavia. The castle was on the Grogarnshaupt, the northern tip of Grogarnberges. The 30 m high sea cliffs provided protection on three sides. In the south there were two 100 m long stone walls with palisades. From the castle you can see the other great castles of this region. Archaeological investigations of the outer ramparts turned up arrowheads from the late Vendel Period, which provide a clue as to the dating of the castle. A number of wooden posts were also found, probably formerly part of the palisades, that were dated to 740 AD. The castle has both an outer and an inner wall. In the west, east and south are the historic harbors Katthammarsvik, Herrvik, and Sandviken, the starting points for trips to the Baltic. There are 82 such castles known on Gotland. Most of them has an interior surface of less than 800 m2 . Grogarnsberget, however, measures 450 m × 100 m ), making it one of the two largest hill forts on the island. House foundations from the Roman Iron Age the Migration Period were found inside the castle, unlike any other hill forts on the island. The Grogarnsberget is also a nature reserve and it is designated a Natura 2000 area.

Gotland Ring

Gotland Ring is the first ecological racetrack and driver training venue in the world. The premium racetrack and multi-functional motorsport facility in Kappelshamn on the Swedish island of Gotland, the most popular tourist resort in Sweden, is located in an eco-municipality. The circuit designed by the founder and social and environmental entrepreneur Alec Arho Havrén was FIA-inspected for racing in June 2009. However, corporate edutainment and testing is the main focus even in the future. In its final format with a main circuit profile of 28 km Gotland Ring will become the longest racetrack in the world. International automotive industry new model launches have been organised on Gotland Ring since 2007. Gotland Ring is considered the only sustainable race & test track in the world hence the choice of a Pan-European launch of the hydrogen driven Honda FCX in June 2007. During October-Nov 2007, BMW premiered its new Efficient Dynamics technology in conjunction to its 135i Coupe introduction on Gotland Ring. In the future, six separate circuits totalling 28 km will allow flexible utilisation of the facility; simultaneous testing and corporate events can be executed on different parts of the extensive complex. Circuit experts and racing champions already consider the now existing operational Gotland Ring profile as one of the most demanding and exciting in the world. As of today, the tarmac extends over 3.2 km on the Northern Loop and it will be FIA graded and ready to be raced on by spring 2009. Modern FIA steel barriers are in place around the complete circuit and the track was certified for racing June 2009. The second complete entity the Southern Loop is under pre-construction development and is ready for tarmac installation during 2015. The vast areas available for Gotland Ring, enable a complete edutainment park, green business campus, and motorsport & leisure centre for future expansion. In its final format , the entire track system of approximately 28 km is planned to extend over an approximate 200 ha area. Founder and main partner Alec Arho Havrén is the track profile architect and driving force behind the green business campus development and a paradigm shifting Smart Energy Road and Traffic System, an energy harvesting smart micro grid with inductive wireless and mobile charging for EVs. Nordkalk the biggest limestone producer in Northern Europe is the main sponsor and the enabling partner of Gotland Ring.

Bulverket

The Bulverket is the remnants of a large wooden fortification or bulwark at Lake Tingstäde on the island of Gotland, Sweden. When built, it consisted of a platform with houses surrounded by a double palisade with the entire construction around 250 m in diameter. According to a 1989 archeological survey, the structure was built in the 1130s and may have been used for less than a century. Although its original purpose is unknown, theories suggest it was either used as a shelter during the turbulent times on Gotland at the end of the Viking Age or that it was the site of a last stand. Among the archeological finds at the Bulverket are the remains of three boats. One of these served as a model for the reconstruction of a Viking boat, the Krampmacken, in 1980. The Krampmacken has subsequently made several journeys following old Viking waterways through Eastern Europe.

Galgberget

Galgberget is a nature reserve just north of Visby on Gotland, Sweden. The area is bounded to the west by the cliff edge, in the east by County Road 149, and in the north by the city of Visby. Galgberget is named after the still remaining gallows, built during the 13th century, where local criminals used to be executed. It is claimed to be the only preserved Medieval execution site in Europe. The gallows consist of a low, circular stone wall with three pillars of stone rising from it. Wooden beams rested on the pillars, and criminals were hung from these using ropes and hooks. It is believed that the gallows were in use until 1845. The gallows were situated so that there was a clear view of them in Visby and from the sea, so that everyone could view those who had been executed. In July 2008, in close proximity to the gallows, archaeologists from the Gotland Museum found the bones of some 30 people who had been executed, presumably on the spot. The area has barren vegetation due to its limestone constitution, the most common plant being Prunus spinosa, commonly called the blackthorn or sloe. It is a popular hiking area. Galgberget also has the ruin of a lime kiln and a disused motor stadium. As of 2015, there are also a number of recently built apartment houses. During the Medieval Week reenactment of the Battle of Visby in 2008, the local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism organized a medieval tent camp at Galgberget.

Lilla Karlsö

Lilla Karlsö is a small Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, situated about 3 km west of Gotland and 4.5 km from Stora Karlsö. It has an area of about 1.6 km2 and is 66 m high. Most of the island consists of a limestone plateau. Parts of the shoreline is bordered by steep cliffs. The island is mostly covered by alvar. There is also some very old broadleaf forest, which is unique for Gotland. There are several caves and up to 16 m high limestone pillars. The island is mostly known for its rich birdlife and flora. There are colonies of several thousands pairs of guillemot and razorbill. There are also several very rare plants for Sweden such as Lactuca quercina, harts-tongue fern and Petrorhagia prolifera. Since 1954, the island has been owned by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and it is now a nature reserve. During summer there are tour boats from Djupvik 15 km south of Klintehamn.
