Top Attractions in Prizren

Gazi Mehmet Pasha's Mosque

Gazi Mehmet Pasha's Mosque is one of the oldest monuments of Islamic art in Prizren. The inscription above the entrance states it was built in 1561. This mosque has a square base and numerous windows, while the main veneration niche and the pulpit are made of marble. A hexagonal mausoleum has been built in the courtyard of the mosque which Mehmet Pasha earmarked as his grave. Building complex that mosque settles in, includes a high school , a primary school , a library and a mausoleum for the founder, a bath of Gazi Mehmet Pasha, which is about 150m away from the mosque. This Mosque, nowadays known as Bajrakli Mosque is behind Albanian League Museum. Together with Albanian League Complex, Bath of Gazi Mehmet Pasha, and old urban houses, Mehmet Pasha Mosque gives you the sense of Ottoman architecture.

Part of a series of articles upon Archaeology of Kosovo An archaeological site at Poslište was discovered during the construction of the highway segment between Prizren and Vrmica in 2010, approximately one kilometre south of the multilayer archaeological site at Vlašnja, on the left side of this road segment, respectively, 150 m from the road that leads toward the Poslište village. Rescue excavations were carried out at this location in an earlier known unidentified site of Roman era. Nevertheless, based on the discovered archaeological material, the archaeological excavations proved existence of the remains of a Roman road station, set along the ancient road Via Lissus-Naissus. Aside from the discovered movable archaeological material, within this archaeological complex, a Mansio with several secondary rooms with a conspicuous Thermae were recorded. Most likely, as part of the Roman road station a building known as Mutatio or horse exchange station was part of this complex. While, it is known that along the important Roman roads, there were station stables that served to offer fresh horses a service that was offered at each road station along the Roman roads during Roman period.

Monastery of the Holy Archangels

The Monastery of the Holy Archangels is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in Prizren, in southern Kosovo, founded by the Serbian Emperor Stefan Dušan between 1343 and 1352 on the site of an earlier church, part of the Višegrad fortress complex. It was the burial church for Emperor Dušan, and represented the culmination of the Serbian ecclesiastical archritectural style, that led to the birth of the Morava school style. The complex, which ranges over 6,500 m², includes two churches, the main one is dedicated to the Holy Archangels, and the second one is dedicated to St. Nicholas, both built in the Rascian architectural style, although, like the Visoki Dečani monastery, regarding time of the construction, and some architectural elements, it may belong to the Vardar architectural style. The monastery was looted and destroyed after the Ottomans arrived in 1455, and in 1615 it was razed to the ground and its material was used for the construction of the Sinan Pasha Mosque in Prizren. The entire complex was archeologically explored in 1927, and its remains were conserved after the Second World War. During the last decade of the 20th century, work on the reconstruction was continued, and in 1998 it again became an active male monastery. After the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and retreat of the Yugoslav army forces, reconstructed objects were burned and looted in June 1999, by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, after the Kosovo Force arrived. During the 2004 unrest in Kosovo, the monastery was burned and looted again. The entire monastery complex is under protection of the Republic of Serbia, as a Monument of Culture of Great Importance, and today in the monastery lives one priest and the monastery is under constant protection of Kosovo Police and in a special protection zone.
